Report: Fred dropping out; Update: Confirmed; Update: What went wrong? Update: The man who stopped Huckmentum

Ambinder says so and Carl Cameron is reporting it on Fox now. Stand by for updates.
Update: Cameron says it could come tonight or tomorrow. He’s already informed his campaign headquarters, in person.
Update: The website hadn’t been updated in four days. The “Fred File feed” is already offline.
Update: Here’s the official statement via his web guy, Jon Henke:
McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:
“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”
Update: The problem in one word: Not laziness but disorganization. Karl’s been doing yeoman’s work at Goldstein’s place lately tracking how Hillary managed to eke out wins against Obama despite the fact that he’s well-funded and light years more charismatic than she is. Read this post and follow the links to the Las Vegas Sun and, especially, to Zak Exley to see what it takes. The media likes sexy/dopey pop-psych narratives about election-eve crying and racial jabs, but organization matters — a lot, a rule Fred always seemed to believe he could ignore by counting on his True Conservative status to carry him through. Again I point you to this Mark Steyn post, or to MM’s tale of how his people couldn’t pull it together to get 500 signatures in Delaware. If the lesson (or one of the lessons) of Ron Paul’s newsletter fiasco was that you can’t trust a guy to manage a country if he can’t manage his own vanity publication, how can you trust a guy who can’t figure out how to get on the ballot in all 50 states?
So I’m chalking it up to disorganization. The alternative, that Bush killed the Reagan coalition dead and left Thompson types inviable no matter how efficiently their machines might run, is simply too terrible to contemplate.
Update: He served up the red meat, says Geraghty, but he didn’t char-grill it.
Update: I fear this news calls for anti-humpbot.
Update: Mitt’s race to lose now in Florida?
Update: I flagged these links after the South Carolina but we’re in obit mode here so let’s bring them back. What’s the legacy of Fred’s campaign? Disappointment and disorganization, yes, but something else too:
The reaction from Marvin Katzen, the McCain supporter who told us earlier in the evening that he was looking for vindication from the 2000 loss to tonight’s win: “Thank God for Fred Thompson.” Katzen credits McCain’s victory to the fact that Thompson split the conservative evangelical vote with Mike Huckabee in Upstate.
“While well behind and tied for third place with Romney, Thompson did make gains,” wrote Thomas Edsall, “and the data suggest that the 6 points Thompson picked up came out of Huckabee’s hide.” Huck’s own people admitted as much. It falls to Romney to finish McCain but Fred can claim a moral victory in having dispatched the demagogue.
Update: If you believe ARG, and you probably shouldn’t, McCain’s lead in Florida is now large enough that picking up Fred’s supporters won’t matter to Mitt.
Update: A wistful eulogy from Spruiell.
Update: Rich Galen, a now former Fred advisor, is pushing his man for veep.

Looks like you finally harpooned your quarry, AP. Savor the flavor. Keep in mind however, that in the novel, the White Whale took with him Ahab, the Pequod and her entire crew - save for Ishmael.

Mitt is the only one that even approaches being acceptable to me, and I just can’t gather any enthusiasm for him.
LegendHasIt on January 22, 2008 at 2:40 PM
Depressing.
Maybe by the time the Texas primary comes I can bring myself to vote for Romney, but my vote will be mainly so that neither McCain nor Huckabee wins.
It is kind of anti-climatic for Allah and his followers, who have been dancing on Fred’s grave for weeks.
ChartreuseDragon on January 22, 2008 at 2:40 PM
My candidate was Thompson, until his loss in South Carolina.
Unlike you, however, I prefer pragmatism over petulance.
Slublog on January 22, 2008 at 2:41 PM
That leaves Mitt.
jukin on January 22, 2008 at 2:41 PM
Sorry I ain’t going to make it easy for any Republican left in the race. I won’t vote for Obama, as somebody suggested, to beat Hillary and I won’t water down my principles anymore. I will write in Fred in the primary and then just sit back and watch the general.

I’m disappointed that he couldn’t get a better showing, but I’ll support Romney at this point.
I hope Fred does turn out to be a Goldwater, because I’m hoping for a Reagan sometime in the future. What was it, 12 years between Goldwater’s defeat and Reagan’s success??

conservnut on January 22, 2008 at 2:42 PM
Even though he says he doesn’t want to be VP, I still wish he would reconsider being one for Romney. Of the pack, those were the two I had the least concerns with. My main concern with Romney was conservative credibility, and Thompson as his VP would have fixed that.
That said… F*%#$%#!

Thank you for giving me the power to control your vote.
Now look at my watch. You are getting sleepy. Very sleepy. I now support Mitt. You could not possibly vote the same as tommylotto. You now only can choose between McCain, Huck and Rudy. Those are your only choices. Choose wisely….

PREDICTION: The”leftover” candidates will trip over each other praising Fred’s ideas and the “conservative message” that Fred brought to the mix.
They of course won’t govern by these principles. They’ll just give them lip service.

I am no strong supporter of Fred, and even less of a supporter of “Second Look”, Mitt, Rudy, or the Huckster. If voting Republican is nothing more than voting Democrat of a different flavor, I will sit this one out.

Farewell Fred.
It’s been real.
Thanks for making a decision prior to Super Tuesday, so I’ll now know for sure who to vote for.
It’s Mitt or bust now.

I was thinking of voting in primary for Edwards. Just for fun. Or Ron Paul.
conservativegrandma on January 22, 2008 at 2:44 PM
Why are so many going to Romney over Rudy? Is it just that Rudy hasn’t won any states yet? I really hope Rudy is given serious consideration. Dennis Prager has a great piece today about Rudy.

I made my decision Saturday night after Fred bombed out in SC.
I am voting for Mitt Romney here in Florida.
We cannot allow McCain to smear the sunshine state just as we are getting over our reputation for 2000.
ashleymatt on January 22, 2008 at 2:45 PM
In my case, only if it’s McVain or Huckabee. I’ll support Mitt, and I’ll hold my nose and pull the lever for Rudy.
But I won’t do it for a candidate that has actively sought to undermine the conservative movement as aggressively and maliciously as both McVain and Huck have done.

Dennis Prager has a good article today on Rudy and his Conservative stances. he’s much more conservative than he’s given credit for, if only his Social stances werent’ so stark he’d have alot easier time
jp on January 22, 2008 at 2:48 PM
Brings to mind Voltaire: “Le mieux est l’ennemi du bien” (The best is the enemy of the good). Fred had the best ideology, but his campaign wasn’t nearly good enough.
I’m fine with Mitt or Rudy. They’re not perfect, but they’re good enough. They’ve both done very well in their endeavors to date. I might be able to support McCain without vomiting, but it’s iffy. But sitting home protesting the lack of a perfect candidate (or staying married to the corpse by voting for him) when there are some viable alternatives is cutting off your nose to spite your face.
ErikTheRed on January 22, 2008 at 2:48 PM
At least he helped take out Huck. Thanks Fred.

Big S on January 22, 2008 at 2:50 PM
Disappointed more folks didn’t support Fred, but what is done is done. I’m glad he didn’t hang on until super Tuesday and further split the “more conservative” vote.
Time to hold the old nose and go all in for Romney.
As for McCain and the Huckster, a few lines come to mind:
My first thought was, he lied with every word
That hoary cripple, with malicious eye
Askance to watch the working of his lie
On mine, and mouth scarce able to afford
Suppression of the glee, that pursed and scored
Its edge, at one more victim gained thereby.
Robert Browning
TheFluke on January 22, 2008 at 2:50 PM
Unlike you CS I dont blindly follow candidates. I have seen enough of Mitt’s Record and stance on Issues to know he isnt a conservative.
He can wear all the “Im a conservative” shirts he wants he doesnt govern or act conservative. I urge everyone else rather than blondly following Mitt because he says he is conservative to just go to his site and read his stances on issues. They arent conservative.
In other words take Mitt’s word for it not mine

No but he and MM sure didn’t help! Hope they get what they deserve. HILLERY!
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on January 22, 2008 at 2:50 PM
Florida Fred supporters, you should vote for Rudy. Here’s why. If Rudy wins Florida it will still be a 3 man race and McCain will be weaker and will start running out of money. If you vote for Romney and McCain wins, Rudy is done… Which gives us a McCain VS Romney showdown. Which means there’s a 50/50 chance of us getting stuck with McCain. VOTE RUDY IN FLORIDA!
froghat on January 22, 2008 at 2:51 PM
Naw, your right it was disorganization. We kept hearing it from every state he competed in.
bnelson44 on January 22, 2008 at 2:51 PM
Who’s really winning so far?
The RCP Delegate Count:
Romney 59
Huckabee 40
McCain 36
$50 abortion co-pay Romney will fall off. Romney stands no chance due to the fact that he is mormon and vast majority of Christians will NOT vote for him.
Mccain will fall off due to his amnesty bill that 80% of the U.S. is against. Frankly he shouldn’t even be considered as a possibility!
Mike Huckabee has a huge base of supporters and now that Thompson is out Huck will win!

That is pathetic. You seem to think of Fred as some wise party elder that the other candidates will mention with reverence approaching Reagan. He won the endorsement of the NRL for pete’s sake even though he is pro-choice. Black is white. Up is down. A corrupt liar is a consistent conservative. Criminie!!!

menoname on January 22, 2008 at 2:53 PM
There’s plenty of blame to go around, but there’s one element that I particularly don’t like at all about it.
I haven’t even been able to vote yet.
Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan, Nevada, and South Carolina got to determine Fred’s fate. Nobody else. If I had my preference, all the primaries would be held on the same day nationwide.
As it is, his support was affected by Iowa voters. And then New Hampshire voters. Might Fred have done better in South Carolina if South Carolinians didn’t already have a cloud of gloom and doom over Fred’s head for his poor performance in the preceding states? They already had the perception that Fred was unelectable because of poor performance elsewhere, so people hedge their bets so that they don’t “throw their votes away.”
I think the primary system is broken. Sorry, Iowa. I don’t think you should have so much sway. I know there’s something to be said for being able to maintain momentum, and I know there are a thousand other factors in Fred’s decision today. But the early primary states have become Kingmakers even more than ever before due to media propagation. What happens in Iowa determines what happens elsewhere. Iowa and South Carolina robbed me of my chance to cast my vote for Fred.
Fix the system. We’re a republic, for crying out loud. My vote should count for just as much as an Iowan’s.

In Florida, Romney Says Cut Payroll Tax on Those Over 65
This proposal from Mitt Romney should be spectacularly popular in Florida.
Romney also wants to eliminate the Social Security payroll tax for workers over 65.
“I want people who are over 65 to stay in the workforce,” he told an audience in Daytona. “They’ve already paid for Social Security. Why make them keep paying and paying and paying?”
The Social Security proposal would also free businesses from paying their portion of the payroll tax on workers over 65.
Romney did not say how, or whether, he would replenish the payroll tax proceeds that currently flow into the Social Security trust funds.
It’s also a fantastic pander.
Coming on the heels of his $20 billion to help-the-auto-industry plan - which some righty folks liked, some didn’t — Romney’s going to have to be careful to avoid the image that he’s a guy who comes along with a specially-tailored economic stimulus plan that just happens to be great news for whatever key demographic he needs to reach at any particular given moment.

Yeah, I am bummed. The first primary campaign I was every in. And I have been around for many many elections. First time I EVER gave money in a primary too.
While he was in it, he did change the mood a little. Made it just a bit more conservative, if only for a little while.
Jimmybob on January 22, 2008 at 2:54 PM
I am still voting Fred on a write in. If nothing else maybe we can throw the Republican party into a brokered convention and then we will see what the Republican party is all about.
Just A Grunt on January 22, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Truly unfortunate.
Unlike a lot of people, one of the things I truly appreciated about Fred was that he DIDN’T join the race so freaking early (like the race isn’t long enough already folks, I’m already sick of it - side note and I’m not looking for a response: why can’t we all just vote at the same time & get it over with? Sheesh!!!) And I never understood that whole “fire in the belly” thing - I found his demeanor far more presidential than the fake-over-enthusiasm generated from the rest of the candidates (of both parties)… they all remind me of the little dog in those old Looney Tunes cartoons, the one that’s constantly bouncing around the big dog driving everyone absolutely INSANE!
Oh well, I’m still hoping for great things from Fred - there are plenty of ways he can continue serving our great nation… at least it’s still a great nation and it will be provided the Dems stay out of the white house.
;-)
Pachyderm on January 22, 2008 at 2:54 PM
I just hate that candidates get decided way before our state’s primary. I honestly don’t have a better solution, but it just seems strange that only 3-5 states get to determine the top tier candidates for the rest of the country. I wish someone could come up with a better plan.
txsurveyor on January 22, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Absolutely. He never capitalized on his early popularity and that was it. If you put Mitt’s organization with Fred’s rhetoric, you have the next POTUS.
Spirit of 1776 on January 22, 2008 at 2:54 PM
As much as I like Fred, I think he has to shoulder a good chunk of the blame. I always thought he missed his moment last summer when everybody was on the edge of his seat waiting for him to declare, and he dawdled for months on end waiting. Had he jumped in back in May or June, he could have really capitalized on the moment an built some serious momentum early.
All that being said, while voters in SC were going to the polls, I was in Shreveport playing blackjack, and while I didn’t do too bad, I missed on a few choice opportunities to double down and increase my winnings. Without a doubt, that’s AP’s fault.

The “Ross Perot” and “Ralph Nader” of the ‘08 Republican primaries has been
matrixedMittrixed, by Romney saving money and staying off the SC airwaves. The next victim is Mike Huckabee.
McCain is a victim of his own undoing, namely that he cannot win a primary without the Independent and Democrat vote. Florida will finish off McCain.

Bingo. My support of Thompson means nothing now, thanks to a handful of states. There’s something wrong with that.
fourstringfuror on January 22, 2008 at 2:57 PM
I can’t speak for all of us, but the reason I supported Fred in the first place wasn’t because of his mesmerising role in Days of Thunder. It was because the Republican field was dominated by RINO’s and moderates. With Fred gone, my concerns are the same:
Rudy = Hillary on everything but 9/11.
Huck = Mike Dukakis + Jimmy Carter + Oral Roberts.
McCain = Joe Leiberman with an anger management problem
Romney = Moderate Mass Gov pretending to be Reagan.
Paul = Fringe lunatic
None of that has changed.
We accepted “kindler, gentler” with Bush 41. We accepted “compassionate conservatism” with Bush 43. I’m tired of moderates posing as conservatives! The “leftovers” are a sorry lot indeed.

Fred actually announced his candidacy 2 months before Reagan did. See how screwy the whole thing has gotten. Everybody is wanting Bush to be out of office so bad, on both sides, that everything got shuffled around and the fact remains, whoever is elected still can’t office until Jan 20, 2009.

dingbat on January 22, 2008 at 2:58 PM
In the wake of Fred’s departure and the lack of a clear front runner on the right, I believe the new conservative slogan must be ‘Anybody But Hillary or Obama’, aka Anybody But HO, or even shortened to A B HO.
Imagine the Dem ticket of Hillary & Obama in that order. It would be the HO ticket. People would be proud to support the HO administration, to claim that they ‘voted for the HO team’. The media spin would be fantastic! Conservatives everywhere would rejoice, claiming that they’d never ‘vote for a HO, respect a HO, or answer to a HO administration’. Our new slogan would be, of course, ‘Say NO to HO’.
But I digress….
