Conservatism is not dead, but it is at risk of splitting into separate factions, none of which will have the votes to win the presidency. Fred was the only one who was conservative across the spectrum. Each of the other candidates is less. In fact, each of the other candidates is less a conservative than our current president.

Heinlein said an honest politician is “one who stays bought.”
That’s the question with Mitt: is he an honest politician? That is, having sold himself as a conservative, will he stay “bought.”

Back when the Southern Baptists were having the big struggle for control between the “conservative” Southern Baptists and the “moderates” (MSM speak for “liberals”), Huckabee stayed on the “moderate” side.

Now, Huckabee is appealing to the same “evangelicals” he opposed back then. So he’s not really an evangelical. He just knows how to talk like one.

If we can’t have Fred as the president-elect, I hope he becomes the VP candidate and stands ready to take over for an incapacitated McCain, an embarrassed Giuliani, or a successful Romney (can’t think of any reason his presidency might be cut short). I’ll vote for the Rep-nominee and pray for two productive, successful terms regardless who it is, but I can’t help but desire the closest thing to my long-desired “Fred-Mitt” presidency… I don’t want to wish ill anything on anyone, but that would be a “Maverick-Fred” presidency with JohnnyMac resigning in his first year and Fred inviting Mitt to serve as his VP.

Then again… When I think of the mind-set which would elect McCain…, I feel nauseous and hopeless, as it means that the majority of Republicans and the majority of Conservatives will have parted company. That can’t possibly produce positive results in future elections. I guess I’ll change my Fred-Mitt dream team to a Mitt-Fred reality check. *sigh*

I don’t think he can beat either of them, which means, yes, I think we’re screwed. Originally, I thought Thompson/Giuliani might have a chance, although I was not happy with the thought of Rudy as tie-breaker in Congress. Now, I truly don’t think we have anyone who can beat either of them. And that includes the other NYC mayor wnwnbm.

Ms E……not to pull the thread sideways, but my GGGGfather started the first Baptist church in Carolina. There is even a statue to the gentleman in the state. From Carolina, to Tennessee, to Illinois, to Arkansas, to Texas, to California, I have a claim to Baptist Popery!

That said…..I picked the wrong horse. It is that simple.
No biggie. Fred couldn’t cut it. Now I have to look at Romney, then Rudy (I can’t spell Guiliani either, hell I can’t spell anything), then McNuts. All will be OK. My electric bill will still arrive and beer will still be available at 7-11.
