whiskeytango on January 22, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Wow, can you imagine the meltdown on the left if that happened?

conservnut on January 22, 2008 at 10:58 PM

If nothing else came of Fred’s candidacy, at least he mortally wounded the Huckster’s.

Fred was far and away the best candidate, just not the best politician, because he refused to pander, refused to play the media games, and told the truth.

While the other douchebags signed pledges they have no chance of ever keeping, or promised constitutional amendments that have no chance of ever passing, Fred told it the way it was, offered detailed solutions, and gave his honest assessment.

He will be missed.

As for the Huckster, and his “decent and honest campaign” (his words), I believe the 9th Commandment says something about bearing false witness.

Your day of reckoning is coming.

bigred on January 22, 2008 at 10:58 PM

Alas.

Of course, in my case, it was more platonic.

South Carolina was going to ruin either Huckabee or McCain. It may as well have been Huckabee in an evangelical garden…makes the grave even that much deeper.

SouthernGent on January 22, 2008 at 11:18 PM

Well, nationally speaking, it’s pretty clear that from September to December, Huckabee steadily chipped away at Thompson.

None of the other candidates moved much. Is there any other way to account for this?

I think FredHeads may have to accept that Fred attracted a more complex set of adherents, at least early on, than we can see in our sheltered blog world.

viking999 on January 22, 2008 at 11:18 PM

Stop the sniveling you bunch of quivering queenies. Buck up. Face reality. The Fred is no longer with us. Snap out of it!

Time to regroup and form a new battle plan:

Romney is the only candidate we can throw our support behind. Sure, he’s far from perfect but, unlike McQueeg, he isn’t followed by a boxcar of baggage containing dirty anti-Republican, anti-conservative laundry.

Does he have a checkered past? Questionable statements, decisions and policies? Yep. Then again, he was a Republican adrift in the cesspool of Massachusetts liberalism. He did what he could to survive there and still managed to implement a marginally conservative agenda. Hell, I give him credit just for that.

Rudy is dead in the water. Sorry, Rudyheads, but now you’ll get a chance to drink the bitter gall we Fredheads just quaffed. Tastes crappy, no? Get used to it. The Lisper is hithtory.

McQueeg must be stopped at all costs. We must work together and work hard against him. I want to see his poll numbers go down faster than Larry Craig in a Minnesota men’s room. McCainius delenda est.

As for Chef Squirrel-ar-dee, you can count on him to run a scorched earth stalking horse campaign against Romney. That oily, unctuous bigot will happily flush his country’s future down the toilet if it means taking a heathen Mormon with him. Huckabeus delenda est.

The challenge, my friends, will lie in countering the surge of bigotry that will spring forth from those of our evangelical conservative brethren who profess a less than tolerant view of Mormon folk. We must do all that we can to persuade then that, if elected, Romney will not actually erect a statue of Brigham Young on the White House lawn or decree that polygamy is the law of the land.

We may have a chance if Mitt is the nominee – even if his first name is Willard.

Buck up, troops. This is gonna be a long, hard, slog and we still have nine months to go.

NemoParticularis on January 22, 2008 at 11:20 PM

From the article: “Fred’s candidacy was bigger than him.”
I think Mary Matalin’s got it right.

Nevicata on January 22, 2008 at 11:28 PM

Jimmy Carter II has no chance now that Fred! pummeled him in the SC debate. For that I am truly grateful.

Now it is time to back Mitt to the hilt to end Mr. ‘I spit on Republican values every damn chance I get’ McLair’s bid.

Too much was expected of Fred. Some thought of him as a Reagan. The mantle was just too big. That being said…Fred was a conservative and ran an honest campaign. Even though he lost, at least he never lost his class.

Tsk, enchilada. It would be callous and downright ungentlemanly for me to pummel and thrash poor Harry, especially since it may have the salutary effect of jostling him out of the fantasy he has of being called on stage to play dueling gee-tars with President Chef Suirrel-ar-dee at the Inaugural Ball hoedown.

Note: that’s ‘hoedown’ – not to be confused with Monica Lewinski after having fallen to the Oval Office floor.

“Westward ho, with noise and rattle,
Rushes on the King to battle;
Helter-skelter, hurry-scurry,
‘Tis for me they waste and worry.
Soon my raven’s darling brood
Will fatten on their dainty food,
Tit-bits torn from sailors stricken.

Though rivers stream and hills grow steeper
For here in hell where life gets cheaper
Oh, here in hell the blood runs deeper
And when the final duel is near
I’ll lift my spear and fly
Piercing into the sky and higher
And the strong will thrive
Yes, the weak will cower while the fittest will survive
If we wait for the darkest hour
Till we spring alive

Why do you keep saying Huck supports amnesty?

HaraldHardrada on January 23, 2008 at 12:08 AM

His record in office, not his Johnny-come-lately cribbed “plans”.

Time for some facts:

1. Pushing for in-state tuition for illegals

2. Sitting on his (thinning)arse for 20 months, after he signed the 287(g) bill passed by legislature, without writing the simple, but oh so critical, letter to ICE to actually START the training. His Dem. successor had to write it.

3. Bragging about #2 while lying about it.

4. Offering the Mexican consulate free office space so they could more easily distribute matricula consular cards to illegal aliens.

His heart is not in it – he sympathizes with the poor children of illegal aliens instead of enforcing the law.

“Immigration bill un-Christian, anti-life, governor says Friday, Jan 28, 2005

You keep talking about the events leading up to his death but you skip the important part..

“King Harald then was in a rage, and ran out in front of the array, and hewed down with both hands; so that neither helmet nor armour could withstand him, and all who were nearest gave way before him. It was then very near with the English that they had taken to flight.

Harald was said to have raged like a beserker until he, too, was killed by an arrow in the throat”.

“Where battle-storm was ringing, The foeman
feel its bite; Where arrow-cloud was singing, His Norsemen rush to fight,
Harald stood there, Danger to share, Of armour bare, With Harald there,
His deadly sword still swinging. Where steel on steel was ringing.”

“We”? I do not doubt you mean well and hope to fire up the troops, but I am not a Republican — I am a conservative. I will not automatically jump to the next Republican who might win. I owe no one a vote, they have to earn it , and so far no one else has. Sorry.

Likewise you can not assume all the Fredheads will roll into his camp or any other. Some will of course, some wont however.

IMHO: The electorate just did not want the hard choices of a genuine conservative. That and I think Bush seriously hurt conservatism in general, just by claiming to be one.

For now, the truth is that you can’t out liberal a liberal. So Huck and McCain can’t beat Obama or Hillary. I do not think you can out moderate a liberal either… so I am not sure of Mitt, even less of Rudy. maybe with Hillary to polarize, but probably not against Obama — we will see.

Sometimes it takes a Carter, to give you a Reagan however. So I will wait through Obama’s spectacularly painful 4 years if he wins, and hope that another genuine conservative gets the chance to make a difference again afterwards.

But I do wish you well, and good luck to your candidate.

/and so the cycle goes

I am an evangelical Christian by most people’s description, but when I see Yuckabee, I smell peanuts. Let me explain if you don’t understand that reference. It refers to “peanut-brain” Jimmy Carter, who was probably the worst president this country ever had. Does anyone else remember the $50.00 rebate that he sent to all taxpayers to stimulate the economy during the stagflation of the late seventies. Wage freezes and gas lines that would quit. I didn’t vote for him and I won’t vote for Yuckabee either, because I don’t trust him any more than I would trust the Devil himself.

McCain is a traitor to his party and no one should vote for him just because he was a POW in Vietnam. What has he done to help the Republican cause since then? His 83 ACU rating is for just last year when he began running for president and was trying to con the uninformed conservatives as to his conservative credentials. What was his rating before 2007? He is against free political speech with his consorting with the enemy Feingold and even though he says he now gets it on immigration, HE STILL DOESN’T GET IT. He’ll do a little enforcement and then say now we have to be charitable to the illegal aliens and give them a path to citizenship because we have now done the enforcement bit and NOW you can trust the government to continue to enforce the laws. HA HA You can’t trust the government for anything hardly. They can’t even fight a war to win it.

Are you daft? Given what he has said and done before, and with no explanation for an across the board total 180 change of his “soul” he has no credibility with his purloined anti amnesty sermon. I doubt that he even knows half of what’s in it.

Now tell the truth… you hate Huckabee because you are an atheist!

HaraldHardrada on January 23, 2008 at 12:59 AM

Another illogical claim on your part as I like Mitt. Of course I suppose The High Reverend Huckster would say that’s because the Morons worship the Devil.

MB4 on January 23, 2008 at 1:17 AM

…Sometimes it takes a Carter, to give you a Reagan however. So I will wait through Obama’s spectacularly painful 4 years if he wins, and hope that another genuine conservative gets the chance to make a difference again afterwards.

But I do wish you well, and good luck to your candidate.

/and so the cycle goes

TCJ on January 23, 2008 at 12:44 AM

I feel your pain. But anyone except Mitt is much more likely (or guaranteed!) to sign Shamnesty ’09, and that (as McCain is so fond of saying), my friends, is PERMANENT.

Up to 30 million illegal aliens given permanent residency after a one business day waiting period for DHS to do ‘thorough’ background checks and health checks, followed by a pathway to citizenship. Permanent. Think about that.

And another 30 million waiting to cross to fill their slots in villages like this.

What we need is law enforcement, as is working in 4 states so far. We need a fence, dammit, but we have to stop offering rewards of residency if the flood is to ever stop.

I have donated to Tancredo, Hunter, and then Thompson. Mitt is my (and your) last chance to stop it.

Cute. Now go to hell.

HaraldHardrada on January 23, 2008 at 12:59 AM

No, I hate Huckabee because he’s a liberal and hides behind a Bible when he gets criticized, which doubly pisses me off because he’s harming christianity in the process.

doubleplusundead on January 23, 2008 at 1:43 AM

Someone should have kicked Fred in the ass and told him to grow a pair. I emailed daily for him to go on the Michael Savage show and prove he had what it took. Short answer; he didn’t. It’s time for fred to vanish into obcurity where he belongs.

No Huck!
No McCain!
GO Mitt or Rudy! (in that order)

xplodeit on January 23, 2008 at 1:47 AM

IMO, Huck will lose. McShamnesty will implode. And we will have the two most palatable choices left to choose from.

csdeven on January 23, 2008 at 1:14 AM

I concur. Huck peaked in Iowa, as shown by his inability to get even a majority of EC’s in Michigan. He is spent.

McCain, my head tells me, will not fair as well as he has as we move into the states with more R’s and less I’s. If Rudy can tap into his security con base, we might avoid what I think were the two worst candidates of this cycle.

whiskeytango on January 23, 2008 at 1:47 AM

Got to shake my head…….he wanted VP, he wanted to support McCain, he wanted to bag Huckashuck for everyone….
Elvis was seen in a saucer, Ghandi killed Kennedy, and ‘When Worlds Collide’ is stone cold fact.

I believe it…..Huck took the position that Thompson wanted and he didn’t plan on that. Call it poor judgement, or poor staffing, or whatever….Fred is out and now we get to choose between luke warm, tepid, and stone cold.

We are getting what we paid for…….a snowball’s chance in hell.

Lim, for the first time on HA I detect that you’re down. Cheer up my friend – in a few days all will be better, and maybe even Mr. HH will be convinced that a Romney/Giulinai, or a Romney/Thompson ticket will be ok. They both seem to already be viable options with csdeven. tommylotto is another matter.

How do you spell Giuliani, E?

Entelechy on January 23, 2008 at 1:57 AM

I ain’t down Ms E…..I’m just the nephew and cousin of several Southern Baptist preachers. When I married my Catholic wife the Four Horsemen landed on me with all the brimstone I could handle.

Entelechy on January 23, 2008 at 2:03 AM

Ms E……not to pull the thread sideways, but my GGGGfather started the first Baptist church in Carolina. There is even a statue to the gentleman in the state. From Carolina, to Tennessee, to Illinois, to Arkansas, to Texas, to California, I have a claim to Baptist Popery!

That said…..I picked the wrong horse. It is that simple.
No biggie. Fred couldn’t cut it. Now I have to look at Romney, then Rudy (I can’t spell Guiliani either, hell I can’t spell anything), then McNuts. All will be OK. My electric bill will still arrive and beer will still be available at 7-11.

From NumbersUSA, a prime source on Shamnasty-

What has been the previous record of immigration actions while in elected office?

ABYSMAL — John McCain
BAD — Rudy Giuliani
BAD — Hillary Clinton
BAD — Barack Obama
BAD — John Edwards
BAD — Mike Huckabee
GOOD — Ron Paul
GOOD — Mitt Romney

How good are the promises to prevent amnesties and send current illegal aliens home?
ABYSMAL — John McCain
ABYSMAL — Rudy Giuliani
ABYSMAL — Hillary Clinton
ABYSMAL — Barack Obama
ABYSMAL — John Edwards
GOOD — Ron Paul
EXCELLENT — Mike Huckabee
EXCELLENT — Mitt Romney

How good are the promises to stop future illegal immigration?

POOR — Hillary Clinton
POOR — Barack Obama
POOR — John Edwards
FAIR — Rudy Giuliani
FAIR — John McCain
GOOD — Mike Huckabee
GOOD — Ron Paul
EXCELLENT — Mitt Romney

MB4 on January 23, 2008 at 2:12 AM

Of course I go most by “What has been the previous record of immigration actions while in elected office” as I put a lot of stock in “Watch what they do, not what they say”.

MB4 on January 23, 2008 at 2:15 AM

Lim, then all’s well. You from 7/11, MB, the microbrew, and the sun will still rise in the East. Glad you’re practical abuot it.

MB, on the promises Mitt’s the same with Huck. The past record is more telling than all the promises in the world.

Worst in all 3 categories – in our faces McCain.
