Open thread: The “let’s talk about ‘change’ for three hours” debate

8 p.m. ET on CNN. The Messiah’s up big in SC although none of those results account for Hillary’s win in Nevada. Expect much talk of healing tonight to commemorate MLK Day, interspersed with accusations that Bill Clinton’s a liar and Obama’s team is dabbling in voter suppression.

While we wait, here’s the video of BJ dozing in church yesterday during an MLK remembrance. Comments of the “what if a Republican did this?” variety are, as always, encouraged. Fox News’s embed video of Mitt’s travels on MLK Day also comes recommended, but stick with it until the end or else you’ll miss the “bling bling” line. If you’re in the mood for something meatier, Moran can help you out. Don’t read it if you’re depressed, though, as it might send you spiraling.

Sound off below if you’re watching; Bryan and/or I will have video highlights later. My program guide says CNN has cleared three full hours for tonight’s festivities, but if you can’t spare the time, watch this clip instead. You won’t miss anything.

Thank God…Silky to the rescue! He need a group hug, though.

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:30 PM

There are 3 people in this debate and Im the Prettiest !/Silky

William Amos on January 21, 2008 at 8:30 PM

Is there 3 people in this debate,Silkys cry from the wilderness!

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 8:30 PM

Edwards: “Are there really three people in this debate, not two?”

Um, NO. Buh-bye Silky.

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:30 PM

“I can’t tell who I’m running against sometimes.”

Great line from Obama.

krabbas on January 21, 2008 at 8:30 PM

…and Edwards brings us back to boredom…

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 8:31 PM

Silky…first to keep reminding us that this is ‘Dr. King’s day’. Not bad for a white boy, eh?

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:31 PM

Ok.. the drinking game is changing now. “Mill” is out… “comprehensive” is in.

line ‘em up boys.

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:31 PM

Silky’s staying in until H or O promise him a VP.

p0s3r on January 21, 2008 at 8:31 PM

Edwards is definitely seeking, and finding, higher ground.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:32 PM

Silky ..I’m consistent!

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:32 PM

Silky to NAACP..RACE…Yes is the answer! Would you like fries with that?

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:34 PM

Silky says that the sub-prime issue was racially motivated, and then said it wasn’t.

He didn’t blink.

Amazing.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:34 PM

Maybe those 30% more African American’s wanted those sub-prime loans? Maybe they made bad choices more often than non-African-Americans? This S&L bailout crap is NOT a race issue. It’s a people making stupid decisions issue.

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:34 PM

Edwards’s trajectory is going to hurt Obama if it hurts anyone here…

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 8:34 PM

Oh great racial idenity politics yeah its all about issues

William Amos on January 21, 2008 at 8:34 PM

It’s a people making stupid decisions issue.

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:34 PM

The argument re: the origins of the sub-prime mess is officially closed.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:35 PM

Silky – please, Please PLEASE…Please let me pander. I must PANDER! It is my idiom!

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:36 PM

Silky,”National Predatory lending law”.

Love to see what that amber alert would look like.

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 8:36 PM

non of these idiots knows what they’re talking about when it comes to the economy.

krabbas on January 21, 2008 at 8:36 PM

Hill’s been calling for change on an important issue since March.

Yet, nothing.

Agent of change, indeed.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:37 PM

So far the race card is in overtime.

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 8:37 PM

Low income people don’t have access to banks? Illegal immigrants can get credit, why not low income people?

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:38 PM

Barak, you can build all of the bank branches and programs you like.

The trick is to get people to use them.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:38 PM

Ugh…it’s not a fun being a Republican during this election cycle.

mattyj86 on January 21, 2008 at 8:38 PM

You want predatory lending? What about the 5-6 credit card apps I get every day in the mail? Can I sue for credit harassment? They are taunting me with pre-approval! I can’t resist!

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:39 PM

Barak steps right over Rezko.

There’s a difference between mentioning an issue and addressing it.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:40 PM

OOOOOHHH. THE “TRUST” QUESTION….

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 8:40 PM

Obamas a slum lord,Hillarys playing handball up against the
street curb again!

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 8:40 PM

Obama “Its all about Truth so I wont tell you about that work I did before”

William Amos on January 21, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Whoa, the bidding of the insurance companies…

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Hillary – I regretted voting for it and I’m glad it didn’t get into law

Thanks for your intelligent leadership, ma’am!

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:41 PM

How can anybody vote for these people!

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Maybe those 30% more African American’s wanted those sub-prime loans? Maybe they made bad choices more often than non-African-Americans? This S&L bailout crap is NOT a race issue. It’s a people making stupid decisions issue.

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:34 PM

I totally don’t mean it in a bad or rude way, but the reason for that is statistically more black folks have bad credit. If your credit was trashed, and you wanted a home, the fastest/easiest way to get one was thru the subprime channels. If they ‘got the religion’ and made their payments they fixed their trashed credit faster than imaginable…if not, well…those are some of the folks you’re reading about now.

Now subprime is mostly dead and those kind of folks, if they have a good and verifiable reason their credit is trashed, are running through the FHA mortgage pipe where they should’ve been going all along.

/8 years in mortgages and counting

TheGoblinKing on January 21, 2008 at 8:42 PM

Damn, Silky’s scorin’ offa’ Bambam.

That’s how you know you’re night’s not going well.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:42 PM

Hillary is loaded for bear tonight. She brought out the BFG 9000

tommuck on January 21, 2008 at 8:42 PM

CAN WE GET A MUSHROOM CLOUD?!

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 8:43 PM

Hillary chastising Bambam on vote responsibility.

Rrrrr-ich.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:43 PM

tommuck on January 21, 2008 at 8:42 PM

Nice Doom reference.

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 8:43 PM

Oh man oh man oh man oh man oh man

I hope this never ends.

askheaves on January 21, 2008 at 8:44 PM

Hillary just turned the New Jersey, and fired a full broadside at Barack!

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 8:44 PM

Gotta’ give it to her, she’s got Bambam dead to rights on his spotty IL voting record.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:44 PM

Edwards is learning why he’s not supposed to be up on stage. Nobody cares about him at this point. This is good stuff.. but god forbid Hill and Bar team up.

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:45 PM

Edwards pulls a straddle…

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 8:46 PM

Hill-Dawg is on offense tonight. Barry needs to take kid gloves on.

krabbas on January 21, 2008 at 8:46 PM

I hope Edwards brought knee pads.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:46 PM

Wait for it,wait for it,when does Hillary pull out
the crying card!

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 8:46 PM

Silky – Is there anybody who needs their ass kissed? I may be able to do something about it, just saying…

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:47 PM

This may come out very VERY good for Silky. If he’s smart, he’ll play nice for the rest of the evening.

askheaves on January 21, 2008 at 8:47 PM

Edwards voted in the Senate?

Not as much as he’d like you to believe.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:47 PM

When was the last time either of these people was on the floor voting?

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:48 PM

The death penalty issue in IL was due to Geo. Ryan trying to gain some Jesus points before he was indicted. Obama didn’t do jack.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:49 PM

WHO CARES which race is better under which candidate? When can we get past race and judge people by the content of their character?

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:50 PM

Heres a brilliant idea, highlight all the the little
fights in the debates,do it in montage form, and
wella theres a great political ad,use it against
them!

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 8:50 PM

CNN has set this up from the first question on. Bash O’BamBama night on the Clinton News Network. It’s pretty obvious Edwards is going to go with Clinton. Pretty little sick b___tard. Sad deal… our politics and the condition of the American government. It’s over folks. Get ready for President Hillary Rodham Clinton, with Billy-Bob as First Stud. With a 62% Democrat majority in Congress after this election it’s going to get real messy real fast folks.

Griz on January 21, 2008 at 8:50 PM

When can we get past race and judge people by the content of their character?

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:50 PM

When it stops being profitable.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:51 PM

Hillary – Sell me your soul for universal health care. I swear, I will only use this power for good…and Billy Jeff will show up at your kid’s birthday party.

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:51 PM

God forbid you are right Griz.

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:52 PM

SO, Barak is saying that IF we had the resources his plan would cover 12M illegals?

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Actually, Bambam just spun right out of the immigration issue.

Now, that was slick.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:53 PM

Obama – We have limited resources…

Are you sure? Isn’t the US some kind of Perpetual Motion Machine, that just hasn’t had enough change?

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:54 PM

Obama threw away the Hispanic vote which wasnt voting for him anyway

William Amos on January 21, 2008 at 8:54 PM

No healthcare for illegals? Hmm….

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 8:54 PM

You’re gonna marry health care and immigration reform?!?

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:54 PM

yo

Yeah, that was some sort of non-sequiter.

askheaves on January 21, 2008 at 8:55 PM

Silky – Let’s be honest…health-care plans…mine sucks! Thanks god Silky earns his money the ‘honest’ way.

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 8:55 PM

Hillary will force us to buy her insurance. HOW? Another withholding tax? She will never be asked. Obama just asked it. shocking.

roninacreage on January 21, 2008 at 8:56 PM

askheaves on January 21, 2008 at 8:55 PM

Ok, so I didn’t dream him saying that.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:57 PM

So if border security and comprehensive immigration reform are already married, and nothing can get passed, how the heck will adding health care to the mix get anything done?

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Great now John Edwards is eligible for Health Care under Obama’s plan

William Amos on January 21, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Back to Bush bashing.

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 8:58 PM

Hillary: Universal healthcare …, if first you don’t succeed …

yo on January 21, 2008 at 8:59 PM

I’ve got it!

Give everyone their own personal doctor.

For free of course.

Come on Blitzer, ask how they pay for it. Come on. You can do it. Ask them. Please ask them.

HTF DO YOU PAY FOR IT?

fogw on January 21, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Hillary has plans. It includes everything that has ever been proposed for health care by Democrats in the US in the past 50 years. A truly original idea.

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Hillary’s basing her opinion of Obama based on what the Trib told her to think?

yo on January 21, 2008 at 9:00 PM

fogw on January 21, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Silly rabbit. Everything gets paid for by eliminating the Evil Bush Tax Cuts.

askheaves on January 21, 2008 at 9:01 PM

Hillary said it,universal healthcare.Socialism

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 9:02 PM

What’re the odds that anyone in the audience has ANY idea as to what these people are really saying?

yo on January 21, 2008 at 9:02 PM

Ohhh Iraq goody goody

William Amos on January 21, 2008 at 9:03 PM

End it, or win it?

Hillary: bring the troops home!

yo on January 21, 2008 at 9:03 PM

OOOH, the “end” vs. “win” question. Unexpected.

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Hillary “We lost lets go home”

William Amos on January 21, 2008 at 9:04 PM

“Certain parts of Iraq”? How about, uh, nearly all of Iraq?

Vizzini on January 21, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Hey folks! Hillary loves the troops! Let’s bring them home so we can love them up close. Whaddya say?

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 9:04 PM

ANyone still want to sit at home in November ?

William Amos on January 21, 2008 at 9:05 PM

Hillary ……

“Some of my best friends are black in the military”

No blank checks for the military, huh Hill? Only blank checks to pay for the medical costs of illegal immigrants.

This is laughable.

fogw on January 21, 2008 at 9:05 PM

McCain is wrong because Bush is evil.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 9:05 PM

Gee, whatcha wanna bet Silky loves the troops more than Hillary?

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 9:06 PM

Nice tap dance Hillary, are you for winning it!

She’ll bring the troops home in 60 days, she finally
said it clearly.

Now comes Obama and Silky,in oneupmanship!

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 9:06 PM

I can surrender a lot faster than any of my opponents.

yo on January 21, 2008 at 9:07 PM

I’m pretty sure that Silky doesn’t love the troops as much as he love POOR PEOPLE! though. That’s just a guess…

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 9:07 PM

John Edwards “Who amoung us will surrender the fastest !”

William Amos on January 21, 2008 at 9:07 PM

Edwards ….

Shut up you two, I AM THE BIGGEST COWARD HERE!

fogw on January 21, 2008 at 9:07 PM

This debate is surreal, you would think the Republicans
would have a cake walk to Nov.4!

canopfor on January 21, 2008 at 9:07 PM

WHO CARES which race is better under which candidate? When can we get past race and judge people by the content of their character?

cannonball on January 21, 2008 at 8:50 PM

EXACTLY!!!!!!

Didn’t they like name a holiday after some guy who said something like that once? Why is that relevant right now? hmmm, I can’t quite place it…

TheGoblinKing on January 21, 2008 at 9:08 PM

Obama – Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if we were a third world country? That would be great!

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 9:08 PM

Obama puts a price on National Security.
