Iraq’s improvements too much to ignore, says…UN

Now if only the Democrats who want to be president would acknowledge the new reality.

“We cannot ignore the recent improvements both in the security and political situation in Iraq,” Staffan de Mistura, head of the U.N. Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), said in a speech to the Security Council.

He said the reduced level of violence could be attributed to a number of factors including the increased presence of U.S. and other troops, a ceasefire declared by Shi’ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr’s Mehdi Army militia, and increased cooperation with Iraq’s neighbors.

There’s obviously some grudging in the statement (surge + COIN strategy is the main reason for the improvement), and he went on to offer a “yeah, but” on the politics, but the fact that the security situation has improved to the extent that the UN has to recognize it is a dramatic turn from where we were a year ago.

Is the war still lost, Harry?

It should pass the Democrat’s “International” test now, so maybe it will be okay for them to mention.

Frozen Tex on January 21, 2008 at 12:37 PM

But, but… the Democrats told me that believing in this type of change (as opposed to their change on the campaign trail) would require a suspension of disbelieve. How to resolve this… oh! The UN has been bought off by the evil cooperations! That has to be it.

Wineaholic on January 21, 2008 at 12:38 PM

The facts would interfere too much with their perception of reality. The government over there could step up and for a democratic government and begin caring for all their people and the fanatics could be destroyed and abandoning the call in that country and the Democrat Party in America would continue to blab their ignorance!!
I have lost hope for them.

This is so scary…Why would you want to ignore it. What sick twisted agenda would cause such statements.

tomas on January 21, 2008 at 12:40 PM

the democrats or their voters rather, are too emotionally invested to wish for anything other than withdrawal no matter what. many of them are walking around with “Save Darfur” t-shirts on.

there is another political aspect that needs to be addressed to another segment of non-Dems who have BDS, some segments of evangelicals. They think that the war itself was ‘pre-emptive’ and that Saddam was innoncent, never attacked us or our interest, never supported terrorist, etc. and that it was George Bush who lied to us on WMD and his “policy of pre-emption” is ‘immoral’. They don’t know/understand that the ‘pre-emptive’ part was about Saddam giving WMD’s to terrorist, not the merits of taking Saddam out and the case of war. Which was a “Just War”, though they think over wise because they are buying into the Media and Dem spin and distortions.

cool, violence is down, country is stable, lets go home

offroadaz on January 21, 2008 at 12:45 PM

This should be the focus of the GOP on the success that the dims have tried to sabotage since the beginning. For the leader of the Senate to place into the Congressional Record that we “have lost the war” is treasonous. To allow these cowards to use Iraq as a pawn for their political futures as they did should be used as a means for their demise for their failure to support our troops at war.

The same agenda that thinks it is only fair to give tax refund checks to people who don’t pay income taxes.

Harry Reid could not be reached for comment

LOL… awesome

Luckedout on January 21, 2008 at 12:54 PM

overheard at Obama meeting:

“Can I officially run the race card now?”

geckomon on January 21, 2008 at 12:55 PM

You know, at least Harry Reid made an unambiguous statement that could be verified or, in this case, disproven. It shows he possesses at least a modicum of leadership skill, unlike the rest of the Democratic Party, which is just “waiting it out” (kind of like the terrorists) and using deliberately ambiguous doublespeak to hedge their bets. Harry Reid is an idiot, but he’s an idiot who possesses the courage of his convictions, unlike Obama, Clinton or Pelosi.

dave_lantos on January 21, 2008 at 12:57 PM

Amazing what can be accomplished when you remove UN personnel, eliminate a corrupt UN program (oil for food) and basically bully your way through the UN beaurocracy (keep forcing security council resolutions)….

War….it’s still a highly effective way to acheive peace.

Tomas

What sick twisted agenda would cause such statements.

Because winning the war means losing the election. Priorities.

Tony737 on January 21, 2008 at 1:01 PM

WTF? Now I KNOW I did it right that time!

Tony737 on January 21, 2008 at 1:02 PM

Sen.Clinton, how’s that “..willing suspension of disbelief.” looking now?

The Dem candidates bashing each other, the UN almost telling the truth, what a great time to be reading Hot Air!!!!

Attention world (Achtung):
George Bush got this right, and the American military is the true peace keepers of the world. May God bless each one of them.

The U.N. is a club for liars and thieves, and the Democrats are life-long card holders.

And kindly name me one country the U.S. military has left where we actually won? We still have troops in the Phillipines that essentially date back to the Spanish American war.

Nothing like complete ignorance of the real world on the the part of Defeatocrats.

the paultard, has already called the success of the Surge “Propaganda” in recent interviews.

The Dems hypersonic spin machine will find a way to claim credit for the improvements in Iraq.

southsideironworks on January 21, 2008 at 1:22 PM

Another prime example of the Democrats and asinine institutions like the UN lagging behind and dawdling when it comes to acknowledgeing reality. I mean, the situation has been improving more and more over the past few months and finally they decide to acknowledge the obvious? Wow, good for them.

mattyj86 on January 21, 2008 at 1:26 PM

MikeO And kindly name me one country the U.S. military has left where we actually won?

Vietnam. The idea that we lost that war needs to be fought. History shows that we defeated the V.C., then we defeated the NVA, then we left. Two years later, after being resupplied by the Soviets, the NVA attacked again, the S. Vietnamese lost THAT war. But we won OUR war against communist N. Vietnam.

Tony737 on January 21, 2008 at 1:31 PM

WHAT … THE … PHUUUUUUUQ???

I made sure I did it right and STILL my qoutes get reversed! Is it my laptop? Or is it the Site? GGGRRRRrrrr!

Tony737 on January 21, 2008 at 1:32 PM

>

That’s what we SHOULD be doing! The White house oughta be on the TV everyday saying “Look at this progress! Look at the victory in this battle!” But we’re making the same mistake we made in the 70’s letting the enemy propagate while we stay quit. THAT’S why people think we LOST Vietnam, because of communist propaganda. The islamo-enemy has been trying to claim victory but even THEY know they’ve lost! Yet the left believes WE’VE lost!

Tony737 on January 21, 2008 at 1:37 PM

The newfound security has been achieved in spite of the surge. That’s what Chuck Shumer told me!

(sarcasm, of course)

the democrats or their voters rather, are too emotionally invested to wish for anything other than withdrawal no matter what. many of them are walking around with “Save Darfur” t-shirts on.

What they don’t realize is that some of their own complaints about Iraq would be applicable toward any intervention in Darfur. For example Sudan has never attacked the U.S. or its interests. (Instead, the U.S. has attacked a chemical plant in Sudan.)

Bigfoot on January 21, 2008 at 1:38 PM

OH MY GAWD!

This …

the paultard, has already called the success of the Surge “Propaganda”

… was suppossed to be in front of my rant!

Tony737 on January 21, 2008 at 1:38 PM

In my opinion….Why would the U.N. make this statement now? Who is taking alot of credit for the “New Course” in Iraq and also would not hesitate to give up just a little our sovereignty for U.N. interests? You get 3 guesses….. and the first two don’t count. I’m sure he put them up to this!

mwsivt on January 21, 2008 at 1:50 PM

Iraq Aid Concert next!

tomas on January 21, 2008 at 2:05 PM

The defeatocrats are trying to take credit by saying the 06 elections scared the Iraqis in to behaving because they knew the Dims would pull our troops out. What a bunch of clowns.

Les in NC on January 21, 2008 at 2:13 PM

i noticed Derbyshire has a post to the WAPO article to not beleive the “hawks hype” and about Iraq being a ‘huge strategic blunder’….sigh

True enough to be worth reading twice….

tom on January 21, 2008 at 2:43 PM

Even though the UN is “almost telling the truth” for a change, its building in New York City should still be converted to condos and the entire concept of the UN be moved to Iran. The UN has not been beneficial to the U.S. for many years and is now forcing global warming on us. Global warming is nothing more than “Al Gore’s revenge.” Global warming? Did you see the Packers/Giants game yesterday?

Travis1 on January 21, 2008 at 2:56 PM

I think I liked “evil cooperations” better. :)

It`s like having small Christmas mornings when I hear news like this.Let`s hope they keep coming.

Harry Reid did comment, I believe it was, “LALALALALALALALALALA- I-CAN`T-HEAR-YOU!”

southsideironworks on January 21, 2008 at 1:22 PM

after all it was they who supplied the monies and okd the troops , so the dems will claim credit.

palefaced on January 21, 2008 at 3:08 PM

Now if only the Democrats who want to be president would acknowledge the new reality.

Passing a kidney stone might be easier…

CliffHanger on January 21, 2008 at 3:14 PM

Global warming? Did you see the Packers/Giants game yesterday?

It was the 3rd coldest playoff game in NFL history. It could’ve been THE coldest except for… global warming!

CliffHanger on January 21, 2008 at 3:16 PM

Now if only the Democrats who want to be president would acknowledge the new reality.
Oh they will acknowledge, as soon as they get into office! They will claim the victory for themselves!

“We can not ignore the recent improvements”
Just ask Nancy and Harry. They can give you some advise on how to ignore it. If not rewritten by the Dems, history will show how placing their adgenda over the progress of the war on terror, has indeed caused blood to be spilled and lives to be taken. In my eyes, I hold those, so called leaders, responsible.

oakpack on January 21, 2008 at 5:27 PM

Give the military a job to do and then get out of the way. Oh hold on a second they are getting it done even with those idiots in washington getting in the way. Sorry harry and nancy but you have lost your petty little war against those who know better.

limowilliam on January 21, 2008 at 5:34 PM

Dems scrambling madly to spin this in their favor somehow. Anyhow.

Lying seem to be their first choice.

And only.

profitsbeard on January 21, 2008 at 7:03 PM

That’s quite the confession…

“We cannot ignore…”

If that doesn’t sum things up nicely.
