Debate hightlights: Dueling demagogues; Hillary gets booed for challenging Obama’s “present” votes

The Hillary campaign has been dishonest on Obama’s Reagan remarks from the beginning (as has Edwards), but that didn’t stop Hillary from mischaracterizing them during tonight’s debate one more time. The exchange gets heated, with Obama eventually slamming Hillary’s career as a corporate lawyer on the Wal-Mart board and Hillary bringing up Obama’s association with Tony Rezko. For those of us who don’t like either one of these people, it’s a chance to see them both lose an exchange since neither one comes off as presidential or even particularly likable.
Update: Highlight #2 features the spectacle of a Clinton hitting someone else for being tough to pin down and get a straight answer from. Hillary earns a boo here and Obama ends up winning the exchange by turning his “present” votes into what sounds like defensible legislative strategy imho.
Update: John Edwards is a silly man. He just said that he thinks he can compete against John McCain anywhere in America. He’s not even competitive in his own party anymore and didn’t even bring either of his home states to the Kerry column in 2004. He’s doing worse in this year’s primaries than he did four years ago. His national competitiveness has not been demonstrated at all.

Character wise, speaking ability, etc, he beats EVERYONE in my opinion. Policy wise, Ron Paul 2008 FTW.

He still didn’t answer why he voted present on a bill he claims he sposored.

I’ll avoid the easy over-the-top insults and just say “No.” And I’m glad for that.

Here we are with worldwide markets taking a huge hit, gasoline prices at all time highs, out southern border a disaster, on and on and on.
What do we hear from the persons who might be our next President? Arguments about present votes in a State Senate, voting against the war, which we seem to be winning, and spinning what was said about one of our greatest Presidents, Ronald Reagan. Should we be concerned?

How about “Dueling Banjos” instead as the headline? Dueling banjos are coooooool.

Two things:
1. Bill Clinton stood up for Monica.
2. Where are the Rodham Brothers, Hugh and Anthony (Big Tony)?
DfDeportation on January 21, 2008 at 11:31 PM
I’ve never seen anyone call her Hillary to her face before. Sen. Clinton, Mrs. Clinton but never Hillary. In that second clip that’s what jumped out at me.
repvoter on January 21, 2008 at 11:33 PM
If the bill needed fixing, why didn’t he vote no, instead he voted present, and his present votes are still very troubling?
Pam on January 21, 2008 at 11:35 PM
Don’t blame me, I voted for Kodos!

The Brother, the Bitch and the Brett Girl…..makes you want to want to pluck your eyes out and deep fry them in battery acid.
Answer: the black vote. Not to worry, if Hillary and Edwards found out that they each had a great-great-great-great-second cousin’s brother’s sister’s nephew that was half Jewish and a third black they, and the media, will be calling themselves the “ethnic candidate” and wearing skull caps (I love those things!). Though Hillary may have a leg up on Edwards here, as Bill l was crowned the first black president.
Bubba Redneck on January 21, 2008 at 11:42 PM
You should put the clip where Obama says Dems should start reaching out to evangelicals. Heh. I wonder what all the Hollywood liberals giving money to the Democrats think that.

That statement explains alot.
Big Orange on January 21, 2008 at 11:48 PM
Winner of the Night, John McCain.
John McCain’s the big winner tonight. After Edwards predicted that he would be the GOP nominee (and it came out unasked), Hillary said that if McCain’s the Republican nominee, the election will be about national security. (Obviously trying to draw distinctions with Obama.) She says she can beat him, yadda yadda yadda, but we didn’t see this naming-the-expected-opponent phenomenon in earlier debates.
She’s saying it as a warning about the others, that inherently builds up McCain - he’ll be tough to beat, and impossible for these two other guys to beat.

Obama should have brought up what she was doing for years enabling her sexual predatory husband at the same time he was working for a slum lord. The hypocrisy of this horrible woman is astounding.
Winebabe on January 22, 2008 at 1:04 AM
If you missed the debate, CNN is re-running it right now.
SimplyKimberly on January 22, 2008 at 1:10 AM
I agree. Nobody ever brings up Hillary’s enabling persona and I think it’s her fatal flaw. Imagine an enabler like Hillary trying to negotiate with a Vladamir Putin or some such.
She’s pathetic, but then they’re both pathetic. The man-child who would be the leader of the free world and the jack-boot feminist. It’s the perfect Dhimmicrat storm.

TRC, being white isn’t like being in a club. It doesn’t mean anything to me that another guy is “white”, and there’s nothing to accept or reject.
I find the unusual Irish or Scottish guy no more or less interesting than the unusual Nigerian or Jamaican guy, my Japanese/Samoan brother in law, my Chinese friend, my Swedish friend. And I don’t look at Obama and think of him as “black”, since we somehow know a lot about his heritage.
Maybe you look at a Beskow, an O’Donnell and a Heurtubise and see three white guys, but our heritage is just as varied as a Russian, a Liberian, and an Iraqi.
Jaibones on January 22, 2008 at 1:21 AM
After that first clip, I honestly think that Edwards would have won the nomination if he had pulled up a chair and a bag of popcorn and then the camera found him eating the popcorn while watching the shrapnel fly. :) :) :)
Theophile on January 22, 2008 at 2:03 AM
She got a few good punches in, but I think the average undecided Democrat would go for Obama. As someone else here said, he keeps his cool, even when he’s forceful.

soundingboard on January 22, 2008 at 2:46 AM
You’re missing the point.
The concept of racial identity wrt the those of African ancestry has a unique history in America which the person TRC is talking to and you are ignoring. TRC asked his question in that context, not it the context in which you framed it.
baldilocks on January 22, 2008 at 2:50 AM
That’s because Silky thinks he’s in a beauty pageant.
soundingboard on January 22, 2008 at 2:52 AM
LMAO…a club. That’s awesome.
My response was to a question about why Barack is referred to as “white.”
Nice try dude. But my entire family is a mixed bag of nuts with roots in Croatia, Liberia, Panama, Pacific Islands, Mexico, Spain, Denmark, France, Canada and all over America. I live in an area where you can be sure that many so-called “white” guys are only a generation or two removed from the old country. I’m used to meeting people’s parents who still have their native accent.
So all white guys don’t look the same to me. But all dumb questions do–like a big target for my snarcasm and assholitude.

CRIPPLELAWYER FIGHT!!!!!BohicaTwentyTwo on January 22, 2008 at 8:12 AM
Honestly? No. The reason why is because blacks (see? I know they are not a monolithic group) have conditioned me to make sure I recognize color before anything else. No matter how hard I try, I am continually forced to deal with the issue as if all blacks are one monolithic group.
So, I have come to the point in my life that I just don’t care enough to try and change it. If prominent blacks want to play identity politics for the entire black community, then they can just deal with it themselves and I will vote against every politician who engages in any politics of that nature whether it be blacks, gays, females, etc. When the thinking of the Bill Cosby’s and Morgan Freeman’s of this world start being the dominate thought process of blacks, then I will do my part and be more proactive.
But, these types of politics are unique to the dems, and I have plenty of other reasons to not vote for Obama or Hillary.
csdeven on January 22, 2008 at 8:47 AM
There are people in the audience who clapped when Obama said, “I have family members who were victims of sexual abuse”. Democrat supporters are utterly hypnotized by this man.
dave_lantos on January 22, 2008 at 8:49 AM
Your logic and was Obama’s defense is flawed. If a bil you helped co-sponsor has a provision added that you don’t agree with you make a decision yea or nea based on that provision. You do not vote present, effectively leaving the fate of the bill up to others.
Forget the Illinois Senate. Obama has pulled the same crap in the US senate. Any controversial votes and he decides to sit them out.
His strategy all along has been to have little to no record to use against him.
awake on January 22, 2008 at 8:54 AM
To me the line of the night was Silky pulling out the Bill Clinton trump card:
Hopefully that removes that line (or any of the variances) from future use in a debate. Thank you Silky for keeping that line out of the general election. You’ve actually done something positive with your campaign.
wardrobedoor on January 22, 2008 at 9:23 AM
BTW, Bryan or AP, if you’ve got that video I’d like to see it. I just heard the audio this morning.
wardrobedoor on January 22, 2008 at 9:24 AM
Hillary bitch slapped him around. He’s not a man. I like when he played the “I have family members who were victims” card. Anybody who uses a family member’s trauma for votes is a coward.

One wonders what she did to Larry Klayman to get him to drop all that Hillarycare stuff on a Friday afternoon.
Gosh, I am just so surprised WOlf didn’t bring any of that up, especially considering Universal Healthcare was just about the ONLY THING THEY TALKED ABOUT.
benrand on January 22, 2008 at 9:42 AM
They agreed that the Republicans were evil and wrong, and that they didn’t agree with Ronald Reagan.
Think about that. Reagan was one of the greatest Presidents in our history, won re-election with a 49 state landslide. The Dem ticket that year includes Mondale and Ferraro; Ferraro was a member of the House, and many speculated that she was chosen because she is a woman. “Stunt” candidacies didn’t work in 1984 or 2004. Have a nice election.
Doug on January 22, 2008 at 10:30 AM
All the Dims are lawyers. On the Republican side, Romney has a Harvard law degree and Guiliani is a former prosecutor, but neither McCain nor Huckabee have law degrees.

Granted her body language and tone was chilling……
Imagine the above in the White House for 8 years. Once she got power, you would never get her out.

For a glimpse of the real harpy Hillary is, watch everything related to her mention of Tony Rezko. The way she seems to no longer be able to hold it back, the satisfaction she gets at mudding Obama, the mask coming off…

Watch for this part. Hillary literally says: “We will make the insurance companies make healthcare costs affordable to everyone”.. Can you believe that!!??

“He still didn’t answer why he voted present on a bill he claims he sponsored.” Maybe HRC is lying? Just a thought.
The most important thing that Obama can do to keep his girls safe is to keep them away from Billy and his ilk/fans.
Christine on January 22, 2008 at 11:53 AM
I get the same vibe. A vibe is a gut reaction, in this case, that what is being said is entirely shallow and worthless, more to handle a moment than to accomplish anything. That is the Nagin difference.
Yep. Right down to the courtroom anger mixed with the friendly slip-up addressing the opponent as ‘Hillary’ which someone above mentioned. Usually lawyers are
smartsneaky enough to act like opponents in the court and then go out to drinks after. Some might take Obama addressing Clinton as ‘Hillary’ as a put-down. It raised my suspicions in the direction of possible pre-arranged Pres/VP ticket.
As the play unfolds, the two ‘enemies’ have to be massaged into acceptance by building up both candidates as mutual Reagan haters with enough differences to spar, but enough Reagan hatred to find their mutual love of big government binds them together. They are broken down by love of nation to put differences aside and draw together their two constituencies: 80% of all blacks (Obama) and old Oprah women and rich greenie socialists (Hillary)
I smell brokering

NO WAY! Waaaay too much ego. I never watch the debates but I did enjoy the smack down Obama gave Hillary on several occasions last night. Did you see how she turned toward him when he was speaking, especially about her. The glare in her eyes was sooooo obvious! She tries her best to intimidate but I have to hand it to Obama, he is beginning to take less and less of her BS and has started to grow a pair. I think he finally realized she couldn’t just walk over and eat him! (not on national tv anyway) ;)

Personally, I’m damned tired of hearing people worry more about the race/gender of a candidate than they are about the candidate positions on issues.
I don’t care what color he is, his positions are disturbing.
Midas on January 22, 2008 at 2:24 PM
Wow.
This one got PERSONAL. DIRECT PERSONAL ATTACKS.
Made for interesting TV.
That was also the very FIRST time I’ve ever seen a candidate for president get BOOED…and loudly so.
Somebody said they gave that round to Hitlery. I’m not sure I agree. Yeah, her bringing up the “present vote” was effective at making Obambi look like Fresh Waffles, but her facial expression, her vocal tone, her body language all looked like ultimate bi*chery. Obambi looked about as defensive as I’ve ever seen him but he still did a reasonable job of maintaining his cool and standing his ground, and he simply looked (to me) like he was in far, far greater control of himself and his surroundings. In terms of personal composure and ability to stay cool under fire, personally I think Obambi did the better job by a long shot.
Silky ganging up on Obambi didn’t help but frankly, other than providing comic relief, Silky’s just irrelevant (other than becoming a possible kingmaker) whether he manages to get words in edgewise or not.
Looking forward to their next debate…next Sunday, isn’t it?
Shirotayama on January 22, 2008 at 4:33 PM
Awwww, all that’s gonna result in, is some new Hitlery shill jumping up and down yelling “Cook my Dinner…Cook my Dinner…Cook my Dinner!” instead of “Iron my Shirt!”.
Shirotayama on January 22, 2008 at 4:36 PM
But, he didn’t say what it was he could compete against McCain in, anywhere in the country…maybe shuffleboard, or bocce ball…
uncivilized on January 22, 2008 at 6:14 PM
Ya know, I can’t say I don’t actually LIKE Obama - I would never in a million years cast a vote for him, and I don’t agree with his views on, well, anything, but I really think he believes in what he says, and honestly thinks he has our best interest at heart. There is nothing at all likable about either of the Clintons. He’s pushy and a complete liar, and she’s a shrill, dishonest harpy. And both of them have their best interest at heart. Period.
