Debate hightlights: Dueling demagogues; Hillary gets booed for challenging Obama’s “present” votes

posted at 9:01 pm on January 21, 2008 by Bryan
Send to a Friend | Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

The Hillary campaign has been dishonest on Obama’s Reagan remarks from the beginning (as has Edwards), but that didn’t stop Hillary from mischaracterizing them during tonight’s debate one more time. The exchange gets heated, with Obama eventually slamming Hillary’s career as a corporate lawyer on the Wal-Mart board and Hillary bringing up Obama’s association with Tony Rezko. For those of us who don’t like either one of these people, it’s a chance to see them both lose an exchange since neither one comes off as presidential or even particularly likable.

Update:
Highlight #2 features the spectacle of a Clinton hitting someone else for being tough to pin down and get a straight answer from. Hillary earns a boo here and Obama ends up winning the exchange by turning his “present” votes into what sounds like defensible legislative strategy imho.

Update: John Edwards is a silly man. He just said that he thinks he can compete against John McCain anywhere in America. He’s not even competitive in his own party anymore and didn’t even bring either of his home states to the Kerry column in 2004. He’s doing worse in this year’s primaries than he did four years ago. His national competitiveness has not been demonstrated at all.

Republican Debate: Who loves Ronald Reagan the mostest?
Democrat Debate: Who hates Ronald Reagan the mostest?

If people listened to the Dem debate with an open mind, not a single vote would be cast for any of these cretins.

Lies. Pandering. Stupidity.

Reagan would say “there you go again.” And he’d be right.

We are in deep doo-doo, folks.

Hillary is definitely at a disadvantage when fighting Obama. She gets excited and shrill; he gets excited but still seems cool. And that’s true even when what he says is nonsense.

Sad to say, neither will the GOP be the same. Unless there’s some solidifying done by both parties once the nominees are in place, and the two parties can start channeling their differences at one another instead of within themselves.

JiangxiDad on January 21, 2008 at 9:25 PM

Since Obama had a white mother and a black father, why is he referred to as black? Back in the days of slavery, anyone with black blood was considered black. These days, couldn’t Obama be considered white? It is 50-50, after all. As for Hillary, if rumors of her sexual preference prove true, I guess we could have the mixed race versus the mixed sexuality contest.

AUINSC on January 21, 2008 at 9:28 PM

What a suck-fest! How do you pick the biggest fool in this bunch?

As if “African-Americans” are the whole country….

Hitlery wants us to go back to the days of Mr Big Cigar, Osama Obama is making excuses, and Edweirds is simply ridiculous.

But it seems clear that the so-called “conservatives” have ceded the White House to Clinton or Obama. At least MM, Rash Limbaugh and all those who slapped down the true patriot/conservative possibilities.

Watch carefully, peeps. Your next president is on the stage tonight.

Blake on January 21, 2008 at 9:31 PM

Unfortunately, when Obama lays the Wal*Mart line on her, he shifts his eyes for an instant. Too bad he couldn’t give her the stare down to show he is not intimidated.

The Silky One missed a golden opportunity. When he was saying that there was a third person in the debate, he should have said, “I am enjoying watching this. You two go on, I’ll just stand here looking presidential.” Two for one slam.

Mallard T. Drake on January 21, 2008 at 9:32 PM

A question that should be asked: Considering that trial lawyers have increased the price of virtually everything to cover the cost of defending lawsuits, how does that square with your concern for the poor, Mr. Edwards?

I don’t know why people say Hillary is smart. She isn’t. She’s just loud.

Obama I think came off very well in that clip. She was left stuttering at the end of that exchange, and Obama had landed some solid punches.

Fortunately the Democrat primary voters are off their rockers and still voting for her.

He’s a pretty damn good orator. I don’t think he’ll have a problem.
Besides, nothing brings people together like loathing, and a lot of Democrats loathe Hillary. Pair that with the greater disgust of the Republicans they have and they’ll get behind him no matter what policy disagreements they have.

On the up side, I just got word through the family grapevine that my Kos Kid brother is completely disgusted with ALL the Dems. If we have to have a GOP meltdown, it’s nice to see the other side melting down too.

Look, at least the man is a registered member of the party he votes with. McCain and Huck can’t say the same.

If it weren’t for the impending SCOTUS vacancies, I’d say a liberal in the White House may teach this electorate a good lesson. But I don’t want to see the courts gain any ground on it’s 30-year trend of activism.

muyoso on January 21, 2008 at 10:24 PM

And don’t just react to my political blasphemy. Yeah, I know, how dare I suggest I’d vote for that lib…

Consider that this country appears to be pining for a lib as POTUS. This year we have had ring-side seats to the state-by-state rejection of conservatism. Apparently our government isn’t the only group of Americans who have forgotten how we got to 9/11. When 9/11 happened, I said to my wife, “They’ll do their tribute news magazine shows, have rallies, draft some legislation, and eventually forget it happened. This won’t be the last tragic terror attack on our soil.”

I think we need to face the fact that our countrymen still don’t realize the nature or the seriousness of the fight we’re in. We have terrorism and failing social entitlements. This isn’t a race for President, it’s a race to the next tragedy.

But that’s not the end of the story. As always, we conservatives will be there to pick up the pieces, put up our sleeves, and help America carry on. It’s just sad to see it coming and be able to do nothing to stop it.

Look at the way they have voted with respect to the lives of people under their charge in the past. Do you really think their dishonest and selfish natures won’t make it into the oval office with them?

And what happens if McCain gets a bug up his arse about the military? Will he do to them what he did to free speech in McCain/Feingold?

McCain and Huck would kill their mother for a penny and you want to trust our troops with their lives. Sorry, but having an R next to your name doesn’t absolve you of past behaviors.

At least with a dem in office, the GOP won’t feel obliged to try to get along. If a RINO is in office, we’ll lose our shirt just because the jerk is a member of the party.
