NFL Conference Championships open thread Update: One more to go Update: Giants shock the Pack

AFC at 3, NFC after that. Frozen tundras in both games, which might give the Patriots a slight edge as if they needed it. We all know about the downfall of my team, so I’m not sure who to cheer for now. But I know which team I’d like to see get beaten by about four touchdowns, plus the thought of a Giants-Chargers Super Bowl puts me right to sleep. So today, and this day only, consider me a Cheesehead.

And consider the Patriots unshaven. Hey, it’s cold out there.

Update: 18-0.

Update: Giants go from wild card all the way to the big dance.

There’s still one more day at Barrett-Jackson.

Romo can’t win the big game! :D

In Madison it’s one below. 16 below with the wind. I pity those guys.

MadisonConservative on January 20, 2008 at 2:24 PM

Let’s go G-Men!

reppac122 on January 20, 2008 at 2:27 PM

I’m not sure if I can stand the Favre love-fest for another 2 weeks, and I, as a lifelong Bears fan, cannot stand to see the Packers in the Super Bowl (damn cheeseheads), BUT…

I want to see the best matchup in the Super Bowl and the undefeated Patriots going up against the upstart young Packers led by the legendary Bret Favre is THE best matchup, by far. So I will be rooting heartily for the Patriots (as I am hoping to be a witness to history, since I was not born in 1972 to see that history) and grudgingly for the Packers. Though, I would not be disappointed to see all the cheeseheads go home disappointed after a Giants win. heh

The NFL is fixed. Packers/Patriots guaranteed. It’s the best story for the highest ratings.

lorien1973 on January 20, 2008 at 2:31 PM

Giants vs. Patriots!

We got a thing for kicking Manning ass. It just feels so good!

thegreatbeast on January 20, 2008 at 2:33 PM

I don’t know, lorien, having the New York Football Giants in the Big Game ought to provide some real oomph to the ratings. And you got that Cinderella story working. Plus the Manning cachet.

thegreatbeast on January 20, 2008 at 2:36 PM

Don’t worry Bryan, your Cowboys are goin’ to the Superbowl.

They’ll be sittin’ in the nosebleed section.

Right next to my Eagles.

Thats exactly my thought. It would be so cool to have a perfect season ruined by old man Farve.

alilianstrom on January 20, 2008 at 2:45 PM

in possibly his last game

I’m guessing Brett Favre will has more farewell tours than the Rolling Stones. He’s still playing the game at a very high level and they’ll eventually have to drag him off the field before he quits.

dedalus on January 20, 2008 at 2:45 PM

@lorien1973 on January 20, 2008 at 2:37 PM

I thought Favre said he was coming back next year already??

muyoso on January 20, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Not yet muyoso. He’s not making a decision til after the season.

Packers/Giants in the frozen tundra. Classic NFL matchup, and it doesn’t get any better than this. Go Pack go!

packsoldier on January 20, 2008 at 2:56 PM

Me too Bryan, and you can’t believe how much it pains me to say that. On second thought, you probably can.

Tony737, nah, the Eagles have lower bowl seats because they were able to buy their tickets back in October when they were hopelessly out of it!

I hate to say this, but GO PACK! I am still bitter over the Giants loss and their totally lack of sportsmanship. Besides, it reallys Harvery Martin and not Strahan that owns the record for sacks…they just didn’t keep it as a stat back then.

Sorry, but you are still under the delusion that the Super Bowl is about the football game. SB week and weekend is about all the bigshots and “beautiful people” that show up to celebrate the end of the season and life in America in general. And those celebrations are a lot better when the temperature outside isn’t like the score of a defensive/struggle football game. A northern city has to have A LOT going for it to be selected for a superbowl.

doriangrey on January 20, 2008 at 3:18 PM

The Pack rudely bounced my Seahawks out of the playoffs and a chance to have the NFC Championship game played in Seattle today. Still, it is hard to root against Favre. The Pack against the Giants and Junior Manning is an even easier choice. Go Pack.

A Packers/Patriots Superbowl has potential to be epic. Wouldn’t that be a nice change of pace.

Epic career capper!
The Ice Bowl cometh…
Anybody see Favre parading around Green Bay naked (cold weather conditioning) on ESPN this morning? For real, they showed it(blacking out privates of course)!
GO PACK! GO OVERTIME! Go Chargers… bring sudden playoff death to the Patriots*, in their house no less!

christophercube on January 20, 2008 at 4:03 PM

Defensive games are NEVER boring guys come on! So far there have been at least 3 brilliant defensive plays.

The Bolts better get something in the in zone soon. The pats will trade TDs for fieldgoals all day.

Mallard T. Drake on January 20, 2008 at 3:14 PM

Detroit has pretty much nothing going for it, yet it still got a Super Bowl a couple years ago. Ford Field is a very nice stadium, but it was cold and snowy here in February and the downtown Detroit area is nothing special, to say the least.

It seems the only qualification for a Super Bowl city is to either be warm or have a dome. Pretty lame.

Michael in MI on January 20, 2008 at 4:12 PM

Giants Patriots -> Giants!

You know they’re afraid of the G-Men.

Late to the party, but here are my selections.

I like both underdogs with the points, Giants to win outright.

Limerick on January 20, 2008 at 4:52 PM

At least the Charger field goals are keeping them in the game, until the game changing turnovers(fleeting hope) ruin the Patriots* Superbowl plans.

We all know about the downfall of my team

Thought I heard the wambulance.
I would love to see a Pack/Pat Bowl. The Pack really has nothing to lose, the Pats on the other hand, everything. This is just creamcheese on the bagel for myself. I never really expected my Pack to be here so no matter what, we’ve won. Living in a St Paul burb just gives me more chances to press that point home. We’ve got one degree here, wonder what it’s like on the other side of Wisconsin.

oakpack on January 20, 2008 at 5:28 PM

Well, I have never followed another team than my favorite home town team–the Chiefs–Yeah, I’m not just a fairweather fan, but I have really followed the Pats this year because I had Tom Brady and others in my FFL teams. I’m not biased but there is a reason they are 17-0. They are the most complete team that I can remember. They show up for all 4 qtrs!!

rightwingpastor on January 20, 2008 at 5:32 PM

Say good night, Bolts. They put forth a great effort, but it just isn’t going to be enough.

Pablo on January 20, 2008 at 5:34 PM

I hope it’s the Pats and Green Bay…I’d love to see Farve win another Super Bowl but I’d also like to see the Pats go undefeated…..what’s a guy to do?????

rightwingpastor on January 20, 2008 at 5:39 PM

I want to see Favre get another ring and what better way to do it than against the best team in the league. If Brett is going to win his final superbowl it should be against the Pats.

Seems to me LT was speaking out about the classless acts of the Patriots after that game. Belicheck cheating is classless. Brady dumping a pregnant woman for a supermodel is the ultimate classless act. Great QB, but not a class act like the a$$-kissing press would have you believe.

As for LT, he’s real classy. You know hoe I know? He tell me every chance he gets.

I especially find it classy how Rivers taunts people from the sidelines and then taunts drunk fans in the stands. Now that’s real class.

Here in NE we call people who cry after losing a game they should have won, losers. In SD they call them Chargers.
