Fredhead poll Update: A decision coming Tuesday?

Patrick Ruffini is running the poll, which asks two questions.
#1. If Fred drops out of the race, who will you support?
#2. If Fred drops out and endorses McCain, what impact will that have on your vote?
Before you Fredheads yell at me about this poll, consider that Fred declared that South Carolina was his stand state and he finished third there. Also consider that at some point, people have to start dropping out of the GOP race, and Fred and Huckabee are probably the most likely major candidates to drop out at this point. Huckabee because South Carolina gave him a loss on what amounted to home turf, and Fred because the evidence of Fredmentum is, sadly, scant. Reality’s teeth are getting sharper by the day.
If I had my druthers, Fred would stay in, we would go to a brokered convention and Fred would end up on the ticket. But my druthers don’t seem to be accounting for much these days.
Update: Carl Cameron says there may be a decision coming Tuesday.
As we have previously reported Fred Thomspon is in Tennessee visiting his 90 plus year old mother who is recovering from an illness
There will be no decisions today as Thompson mulls whether to carry on his bid for the presidency but he is expected to say something definitive tomorrow, probably first thing in the morning.
While no one in the campaign will be surprised if he withdraws they have no idea which way he will go and they do have some money if he should decide to continue.

Fred’s only purpose in entering this race was to kill the conservative movement!
Think about it…what was the effect of a Thompson run?
Split the social conservative vote and then drop out and endorse McVain…..leaving true conservatives without a candidate or a choice and with a RINO amnesty candidate nomination assured!

If McCain or Huck wins I stay home in the general. At least with Hillary/Obama they will openly try to screw the Legacy of the Founding Fathers.

That’s a relief…after I’d already lost all faith in the voting public (not that there was much faith to lose, but what little I had is gone…) it would have been too much to bear if Fred had gone to the dark side.

I’d vote for any ticket with Fred, Romney, Rudy as POTUS. The question is how do we get there from here? I’m in MO, and if Fred drops out, it’s easy…I vote Romney. If Fred stays in though, do I vote for Fred who I really want, but if he has no chance isn’t that the same as a vote for McShamnesty?

Interesting take from Medved:
http://michaelmedved.townhall.com/blog/g/6dee8f0b-a7a5-40c6-b670-c0637d945de1
The big loser in South Carolina was, in fact, talk radio: a medium that has unmistakably collapsed in terms of impact, influence and credibility because of its hysterical and one-dimensional involvement in the GOP nomination fight.
For more than a month, the leading conservative talkers in the country have broadcast identical messages in an effort to demonize Mike Huckabee and John McCain. If you’ve tuned in at all to Rush, Sean, Savage, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin, Hugh Hewitt, Dennis Prager, and two dozen others you’ve heard a consistent drum beat of hostility toward Mac and Huck. As always, led by Rush Limbaugh (who because of talent and seniority continues to dominate the medium) the talk radio herd has ridden in precisely the same direction, insisting that McCain and Huckabee deserve no support because they’re not “real conservatives.” A month ago, the angry right launched the slogan that Mike Huckabee is a “pro-life liberal.” More recently, after McCain’s energizing victory in New Hampshire, they trotted out the mantra that the Arizona Senator (with a life-time rating for his Congressional voting record of 83% from the American Conservative Union) is a “pro-war liberal.”
Well, the two alleged “liberals,” McCain and Huckabee just swept a total of 63% of the Republican vote in deeply conservative South Carolina. Meanwhile, the two darlings of talk radio — Mitt Romney and, to a lesser extent, Fred Thompson—combined for an anemic 31% of the vote.

It is frustrating at the least. It’s as if conservatism is taboo in the GOP these days. There are so many misrepresentations and corrupted versions of our core values, all with trying to be attractive to a non-conservative for the sake of appeasement. I believe the GOP is turning into a pandering party and has lost the courage to trust in it’s conservative roots.
But where to go from here?

We will sort it out. What’s going to happen will be unrecognizable and historic. You have got to hang in there. Adulthood and humanity are what’s going to count, not matters of gender, leg-of-stool, or whatnot. Be conservative to the end. That’s what matters.
RushBaby on January 21, 2008 at 1:28 AM
It is only my opinion but I think the problem has been that everyone has their own idea of what the “right Conservative” is and as a result come off as overbearing and strident to others.
Add to the mix that part of the conservative philosophy is a sense of independence, or desire not to be taken for granted. When the leading pundits begin to tell everyone who is acceptable and who is not within the party.. well it may rub people the wrong way.
Bradky on January 21, 2008 at 1:28 AM
I only know my personal friends, my office and my school. At school, a conservative law school mind you, the students are OVERWHELMINGLY liberal…they are pretty bright in all other respects, they just get this glassy eyed look over Obama (I swear, it’s like they are stepford wives or something, it is SO bizzarre) and I can actually see their breath start to speed up. It is weird and freaky. The few professors I know well (only a handful) are conservative and split between McCain and Romney.
The climate in the office: I work in a law firm, 60% sickeningly and stupidly liberal. My truly conservative friends will all vote for Fred in the primary unless he drops out. One of them is slightly ticked with me about voting for Romney to avoid allowing McCain the majority, although it’s not just that, I do like Romney, just not as much as Fred. I don’t think Mitt’s a flip flopper…he may be a flipper, but I’m ok with that because I am too. (I was raised by hippies, so I flipped when I grew up and started thinking for myself. But that’s just me, I am aware that I may be projecting onto Romney the sincerity of my own conversion.)
I know a woman who I work with who I thought was conservative but (arghhhhhhhh) she’s voting for the Hildebeest because she’s a woman. There is no reasoning with her. (And we’ve travelled together…I thought I knew her well.)
And here’s a really bad thing: ALL the older folks in my family and my husband’s family are pathetically liberal. They only read the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, they don’t read blogs, they watch ABC/CBS/NBC nightly news like they have been for the lat 50 years and they think the Republican party has been taken over by the evil Bush who sends soldiers to die solely to profit Halliburton. It’s how we lost the magnificent Jim Talent and got stuck with Claire McCaskill.
That’s just my personal experience.

[sorry for the long post, it was in response to what the climate is like in MO...didn't realize I typed that much...]

Dumb shit.

What an absolute waste of air space that dumb shit is!
Because he cannot get any traction of followers like the ones he mentioned there, he has to go smear, slam, besmirch, and otherwise appear like the smartest guy in the damn room!

Unfortunately that is how many of the Fred and Huck supporters are sounding to those who supported other candidates. Not sure who you are pulling for but your anger is clear. The GOP is forming the ultimate circular firing squad.

Deety on January 21, 2008 at 1:40 AM
Yes, that’s been concerning me from watching the debates…it’s like Huckabee and McCain don’t care who gets elected if it isn’t one of them.

The party really never stops, it just changes locations!

Bradky on January 21, 2008 at 1:44 AM
By the professors, whether they try to influence the students with their political views. This is my third semester there, and I’ve only had 1 professor try to sneak leftist views in to the discussion. I’ve had some ultra left wings prof’s, 2 exactly, but it was cool because they came right out and said they were uber-lib’s, and that colored their views, which put it in perspective. The most liberal of all actually gave me an A on an analysis I did on school vouchers…I couldn’t believe it, I was ready to let my GPA go to hell based on principle, and she freaking gave me an A. Increased my respect for her, I tell you that, and it actually gave me a more open mind regarding lib’s in general.
Anyway, by the prof’s. And I so made the right choice.
JustTruth101 on January 21, 2008 at 1:46 AM
Where in MO? I have some very conservative relatives in Florissant, MO which I believe may be a politically conservative area as well.
geckomon on January 21, 2008 at 1:47 AM
I don’t know about Huckabee but don’t let McCain anywhere near D.C. on inauguration day if it is a Republican who isn’t him.
Deety on January 21, 2008 at 1:47 AM
Fred doesn’t have a realistic chance (brokered convention or otherwise). Strategically, your best choices at this point are to either stay home (which has the same effect of voting for Fred) or vote for your 2nd choice.
I’m staying home, but if you have a second choice that’s acceptable to you, that’s probably the best way to go. The race was Fred’s to win or lose, and he blew it- and I say that as someone who’s been in his corner from the start. I’d just assume he dropped out at this point.
Hollowpoint on January 21, 2008 at 1:49 AM
I’m in St. Louis, and Florissant is pretty close. My understanding is that Florissant is full of families with kids and a lot of churches, so it makes sense that Florissant would lean conservative. There’s a growing number of African-Americans in the community who are staunch democrats, though, so that’s a demographic that’s been more influential in the last 10 years or so.

Listen with your antennae on full alert, separate the decent from the indecent, regardless of identity. The results of conservatism trump the intentions of liberalism, but humanity spans the spectrum.

RushBaby on January 21, 2008 at 2:08 AM
Bradky,
Rest assured I’m not pulling for anybody that
Medvedgnat brain is pulling for. Rather somewhere in line with Rush on this.I thank you for linking that, but it sure fires me up when I see such a jackass leading people over the cliff.
So pathetic to hear a smidgen of callers tell him, “You’re the greastest asset on the air waves”.
And of course, that is enough to keep his ego up.
Shows like Medved are propped up not by adequate sponsorship demand, but by Salem Communications (the syndications company) paying the individual radio stations to carry the show.
Instead of how Rush’s show operates which the radio stations have to pay for the right to run his show, and, they make money to boot because they can charge more for commercials during his shows. That’s how successful Rush is.
The little radio station here that carries Medved.. get this.. CANNOT even afford to pay for billboards!.. that’s how lame and poor they are!!!
They cannot even pay for billboards! When Laura Ingraham’s Book tour came through here, they were passing out brochures saying.. please tell others about our radio station because we don’t have the money to pay for billboards!
When Laura Ingraham and Dennis Praeger come through here they sell out tickets in large auditoriums very quickly, without billboards mind you.
But when Medved comes through here.. do you know where they put him?…. you would never guess…….. take a guess…
…tick.tock.tick.tock, tick tock… I’m waiting….
I’m serious you’ll never guess!
….In a little electronics store when they are running their promotional days..
YEAH! Can you believe that?!!
There are not enough swear words in the English or French language to describe this little prick!
Basically Medved’s program is riding on the backs of the successful ones like Laura and Dennis!
What a colossal waste of airwaves!!!
Mcguyver on January 21, 2008 at 2:09 AM
Thanks, RushBaby. :-)
I agree w/Mcguyver on Medved…it seems like I agree with very little that he spews out (or commenters here only link to the objectionable material, so maybe that’s why I rarely agree with him.) Contrast Medved with Krauthammer…very rarely does anyone disagree with him (although I don’t quite buy everything he says…he is a TEENSY bit too sensitive from time to time…)
Medved is too smug anyway…heck, he couldn’t even pick a good movie and he thinks he’s an influential pundit? Legend in his own mind.
JustTruth101 on January 21, 2008 at 2:15 AM
McCain is almost conservative. You just never knew when he was going to run liberal. That’s why Fred kept saying he was the only consistent conservative.
Huckabee talked conservative, at least until you got to the details.
Both tried to present themselves as conservatives, and Huckabee tried to throw off any criticism of him an non-conservative as some sort of Christian-hatred, or with a people-against-the-powerful shtick.
Conservatism isn’t dead. It just got hijacked in South Carolina.

Mcguyver on January 21, 2008 at 2:51 AM
Disclaimer: I skipped the comments – there are 9 pages of comments on this thread that I have not read. I read Bryan’s post and took the two polls.
I agree with Bryan – if I had my druthers, which count for diddly, Fred would end up on the ticket.
I am with the majority on both polls – Mitt is the clear second best choice, and Fred’s endorsement of McCain or anyone else has zero impact on my vote.
What does all this say? I am a true conservative voter. Fred was the conservative candidate, and failed to win. Mitt is the second best choice for any true conservative. Fred heads are united in their purity of belief and refusal to cast a strategic vote.
As I also remain pure in my atheism – and solidarity with my Christian brethren who refuse to vote for the Huckster.
Here is to the hope that we can rise like the phoenix from the ashes of this pyre-like election to find a new brotherhood of hope in personal responsibility and freedom in the next election.
peski on January 21, 2008 at 2:56 AM
Apparently, the Mittster doesn’t think your participation in this country matters as much as those among the “symphony of faith”. Oh well, happy voting!

HotAirExpert on January 21, 2008 at 3:07 AM
With regards to the talk about Michael Medved, I have only caught his show a couple times in the last week, and he was clearly in the tank for Mike Huckabee. And one of the commenters above said that he cuts off his callers. That’s exactly right. I only heard him speak with two callers and he cut both of them off and called them idiots for criticizing Huckabee on his liberal positions.
I couldn’t stand the nonsense from him, so I turned him off.
But just keep in mind when reading anything from him, that it is all coming from the standpoint that he is a Huckabee supporter. So that is the way he is analyzing the campaign.
