Fredhead poll Update: A decision coming Tuesday?

Patrick Ruffini is running the poll, which asks two questions.
#1. If Fred drops out of the race, who will you support?
#2. If Fred drops out and endorses McCain, what impact will that have on your vote?
Before you Fredheads yell at me about this poll, consider that Fred declared that South Carolina was his stand state and he finished third there. Also consider that at some point, people have to start dropping out of the GOP race, and Fred and Huckabee are probably the most likely major candidates to drop out at this point. Huckabee because South Carolina gave him a loss on what amounted to home turf, and Fred because the evidence of Fredmentum is, sadly, scant. Reality’s teeth are getting sharper by the day.
If I had my druthers, Fred would stay in, we would go to a brokered convention and Fred would end up on the ticket. But my druthers don’t seem to be accounting for much these days.
Update: Carl Cameron says there may be a decision coming Tuesday.
As we have previously reported Fred Thomspon is in Tennessee visiting his 90 plus year old mother who is recovering from an illness
There will be no decisions today as Thompson mulls whether to carry on his bid for the presidency but he is expected to say something definitive tomorrow, probably first thing in the morning.
While no one in the campaign will be surprised if he withdraws they have no idea which way he will go and they do have some money if he should decide to continue.

I like Fred but logic dictates that Romney is where Fredhead’s votes should go.
Two questions make this easy.
A. Who is a real conseravitve? Romney or McCain?
Honest answers…
Romney: maybe, maybe not.
McCain: definitely not.
B. If neither is a reliable conservative who will be more likely to represent the interests of conservatives and “dance with them that brought ‘em”?
No one can logically answer McCain, he delights in screwing over his friends. Once Romney decided to be pro-life, he stuck to it even in the face of opposition.
Romney is the logical choice for all Fredheads, even if he is a squish, he will still be loyal to the party.

Don’t think for a minute Mitt Romney can’t beat Hillary or Obama.
In the January 1980 Gallup poll the results were:
Carter 63%
Reagan 32%
People REALLY do not like Hillary and people really want a person of more substance than Obama.

If it comes down to McCain versus Romney, Romney should win in a landslide. The Border is a HUGE issue and McCain has proven his mettle on that topic. Romney could have a field day pointing out the liberal side of McCain’s record. “If you like the Bush border plan, vote for McCain. If you want secured borders, vote for Romney.”

Oh, how I hate defending this guy. We have beaten this horse to a little damp spot on the ground in other threads, but HH is not a bigot in this case. He’s stating the obvious. If you don’t know or care enough about Christian theology to know the difference btw us and the Mormons, that’s cool. Just stay out of the discussion instead of saying something dumb.

Hurt? Hurt!!?!!
Do you imagine that I will be HURT if Fred Thompson drops out of the presidential race? Look, I love you, but rant is on:
This is not some kind of game to me, where my widdle feewings are on the line. The people who are going to get HURT are deployed in the Middle East and around the world. The people who are TARGETED for getting hurt are sitting around their fireplaces as we speak, blissfully embracing their children, their grandchildren, their pets, and their everyday problems.
I do not believe that I am engaging in hyperbole when I say that the future of my country is at stake when it comes to the election that will take place just a few months down the road.
I am convinced that Fred Dalton Thompson is the most qualified candidate to be President and lead this country through the years ahead.
If his campaign is over, I won’t be hurt. I’ll be afraid.

Mark Steyn thinks Romhey is a proven failure and it will come down to Rudy and McCain.
McMentum vs Huckmentum [Mark Steyn]
Re Mark Levin et al’s points below:
A McCain victory in SC has to be good news for Giuliani because the narrative becomes “Stop McCain!” and Rudy’s best poised to do that - not just because his numbers in Florida haven’t yet collapsed to the same undetectable levels as they have everywhere else, but because Huck and Mitt and Fred will be fairly proven failures at the “Stop McCain” game. So, if stopping him’s your priority, then Rudy’s the one-stop shop after everyone’s stopped shopping around. He’ll be the last ABM (Anyone-But-McCain) in with a shot.
A Huck victory in SC, by contrast, keeps the other fellows alive, which makes it more likely that the attrition in Rudy numbers will continue.
But Mark’s right. If Rudy wins in Florida, those of us who said he can’t recover from sitting out the first month will have to acknowledge that he’s a towering genius who cannily foresaw that leaving the early states to be squabbled over by weak and divisive candidates would render their victories irrelevant and leave him to stroll on in the Second Act and take the throne as king on a field of corpses.*
(*I assume there’s an internal memo somewhere that lays it out like that.)

More bad news for Romney:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080120/ts_nm/usa_politics_romney_record_dc
JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Reuters) - Republican Mitt Romney is touting his revival of the Massachusetts’ economy in a pitch to voters in Florida, a state that could make or break his White House bid, but some experts dispute that record.
The former Massachusetts governor issued a statement on Sunday titled “creating jobs” that focuses on 57,600 jobs added to the Massachusetts economy during his single term as governor from 2003 to 2007.
But Northeastern University economist Andrew Sum, who has researched Romney’s record, said the state lagged the U.S. average during that period in job creation, economic growth and wage increases.
“As a strict labor market economist looking at the record, Massachusetts did very poorly during the Romney years, he said. “On every measure you’ve got, the state was a substantial under-performer.”

I admit that since all the newbees have come along I have been pretty busy with work and unable to participate in any discussions on this issue. But I do know a little about the subject and have mormons in my family. I take offense to the statement, and I understand that a statement like that is meant to cause offense.
I don’t intend to highjack this thread into an argument into the definitition of a christian. Quite frankly we would probably get 100 differant definitions and I would not call any of them Non-christian.
That is all I am going to say on the subject, proceed with your own dumb comments if you wish.
conservnut on January 20, 2008 at 8:12 PM
Yeah, that wasn’t the discussion. It’s simply not bigoted to draw a distinction between the belief systems of Mormonism and Christianity. It’s reality. To draw a parallel, no one is saying Mormons have tails. That would be bigoted.

True, Romney did manage Bain Capital for 15 years, earned average annualized returns of 110% and charged 30% of profits as opposed to 20%. I admire him as a business leader and give him credit for that.
But considering how easy it is to make money in LBO’s and the fact that the only reason he was asked to help found Bain Capitol was because his Dad was Governor Romney….it is not as interesting of a story as I thought.
The claim that Romney is only worth $250 million is way off, his family is worth billions and billions of dollars and can afford to spend a billion on his run.
But if Willard is such a smart businessman he should have already recognized he has no chance of winning and save his money!

So exactly who’s form of religion will we be subjected to if he wins the White House? I saw earlier that you call Mormons a cult - who decided that? More over, who gave someone the authority and right to make that decision? And by the way, God doesn’t “need” a Constitution, he already has His own - The Bible - live by it. Render unto Caeser there bud and keep government OUT of my relationship with God. Huckabee - yeah, that’s funny. God told us to get the world out of our lives and here you dorks are trying to do the opposite - go figure.

This race is becoming more and more about viability IMO. I’m a FredHead, but with his shotty performances thus far and decreasing chances at the nomination, I’m looking at McCain or Giuliani.
To me, these two are the only ones that could defeat the Dem candidate. While I may have to compromise a bit by going with either of these two, it’s miles better than the socialist garbage Clinton or Obama would roll out if elected.
FLcapitalistthug on January 20, 2008 at 8:43 PM
Despite the situation, Thompson was expected to bow out after failing to win the states where he had hoped to perform strongly, Iowa and South Carolina. The former Tennessee senator and “Law & Order” actor returned to his suburban Washington home late Saturday after delivering a speech in South Carolina that sounded like he was calling it quits. He stopped short of doing so but some supporters suspected it would only be a matter of time before Thompson withdraws.

Theres only two entities that know they are Christians, the ones who profess a belief in Jesus Christ as their Saviour and GOD. In the end it doesn’t matter who points their finger at who, GOD will make the decision. If someone professes their belief in Christ, I take them at their word. If their actions don’t jibe with their faith, I look in the mirror and remind myself I’ve probably been there, done that or worse and vow to do better the next time.

3) It sounds stupid, but looks matter. I have seen TONS of research showing this. (Political Psychology is actually my profession)
4) Once it’s one on one for the general a candidate will have to adapt to all sorts of situations. I don’t think McCain is intelligent enough to properly adapt to these.
5) Romney has money AND knows how to fundraise. McCain isn’t very good here and Giuliani isn’t much better.

Romney has momentum, Romney has organization, Romney has likability.
Fred’s campaign has been flat since day 1. I love the guy and will always respect him but there’s no momentum or organization.
Huckabee - Ugh. He would get squashed like a bug in the general.
McCain - He has independent voters (most of which won’t even vote). No momentum. No personal likability.
And even though I respect Rudy…discussing him as the nominee would be like discussing Ron Paul as the nominee. They don’t have a chance.
Huck or McCain would result in the lowest voter turnout among Republicans.
