Fredhead poll Update: A decision coming Tuesday?

posted at 5:18 pm on January 20, 2008 by Bryan
Share on Facebook | regular view

Patrick Ruffini is running the poll, which asks two questions.

#1. If Fred drops out of the race, who will you support?

#2. If Fred drops out and endorses McCain, what impact will that have on your vote?

Before you Fredheads yell at me about this poll, consider that Fred declared that South Carolina was his stand state and he finished third there. Also consider that at some point, people have to start dropping out of the GOP race, and Fred and Huckabee are probably the most likely major candidates to drop out at this point. Huckabee because South Carolina gave him a loss on what amounted to home turf, and Fred because the evidence of Fredmentum is, sadly, scant. Reality’s teeth are getting sharper by the day.

If I had my druthers, Fred would stay in, we would go to a brokered convention and Fred would end up on the ticket. But my druthers don’t seem to be accounting for much these days.

Update: Carl Cameron says there may be a decision coming Tuesday.

As we have previously reported Fred Thomspon is in Tennessee visiting his 90 plus year old mother who is recovering from an illness

There will be no decisions today as Thompson mulls whether to carry on his bid for the presidency but he is expected to say something definitive tomorrow, probably first thing in the morning.

While no one in the campaign will be surprised if he withdraws they have no idea which way he will go and they do have some money if he should decide to continue.

Having read the entire thread last night, and looking at the new posts today, is like… night and day, actually!

Last night was calm and reasonable — except for Harald Hardrada, who kept trying to start something. Then this morning, the vicious commenters come in.

I’m wondering how Fredheads get a bad name, when the snide, insulting ones almost all seem to support Romney.

In fact, the bulk of negative comments I see don’t come from Fredheads, but they do seem to be aimed at Fredheads.

Is Romney such a sucky candidate that he can only get supporters by tearing down all others? I can’t say I’ve seen Romney go on the attack against anyone, but I sure have seen some Romney trolls attack.

I have no use for someone who lets his ambition to be president undermine the good of the country.

tom on January 21, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Yes tom, that’s the way I read it too. McCain was stratagizing for his pending campaign. He had to know that Petraeus was writing the COIN strategy. It’s not like Petraesu just pulled it out a a magic hat when Gates took over for Rumsfeld. What’s the point of writing one if it’s not going to be implemented.

But forcing Bush’s hand on a military spending bill during time of war was the nail in the McCain coffin for me.

Texas Gal on January 21, 2008 at 2:36 PM

Unfortunately, with as close as the elections have been in recent years that small percentage may very well mean Mitt’s defeat in the general election.

Icky prediction: Romney (eventually) pulls the Republican nomination. Hillary (by virtue of more super delegates) pulls the Democratic nod. Mayor Bloomberg enters the race under the Unity Party and pulls more votes from Mitt than from the Beast, leaving us with Evita the Marxist for president.

Browncoatone on January 21, 2008 at 12:55 PM

I think he will pick up voters who are concerned about Health Insurance. I don’t like the fact of gov’t health insurance but I sure think it’s coming our way. At least his plan is utilizing the free market.

A lot I don’t like about Mitt but if he isn’t lying on most issues (who can tell anymore), I could hold my nose a vote for him… It’s all about the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE AND AMNESTY!

csdeven on January 21, 2008 at 2:05 PM

That is silly on a levels. Why is it you get to dictate what MC desires in a candidate’s values? His choice of not to vote in the general election is not a spiteful action, it’s a protest action.

Spiteful means he has to do something directly to hurt the GOP despite what he believes. If MC no longer feels that the GOP represents the core values that he believes should be followed, it is an honorable thing and legitimate action to stay out of the general election. It says he will not be compromised.

He is not voting based on issue to issue. He would be staying out based on core principle. Why would he want the GOP in if the GOP does not represent him?

Dude, stop spinning this spite rhetoric. It is nothing but dishonest and inflammatory.

Ah yes, Democratic Party Politics in Texas. They succeeded in smearing DeLay and handed the seat to Lampson, somewhat of a bluedog who will probably be able to hold it for a while. Next up will be to take Ron Paul’s seat and his racists supporters are going to help the Ds successfully move that one to their side too.

Quit trying to hijack threads. No one cares about your personal attacks on me. You are angry when I finally called you on your incessant personal attacks, I attacked you, made a sarcastic post of your affection for Mitt, and you suddenly become indignant that I lashed back at you. You don’t like being attacked personally, and I don’t. Well if you continue to personally attack me, then I will just have to dig into the archives and bring out your fantasy night with Mitt again, it must have been quite a night.
So if you don’t like to be subjected to attacks, then lay off…otherwise you will get what you deserve.
And csdeven, you little hater of all things Christian. You are angry at my Mormon rants, how about you calling all Christian ministers the equivalent of whores, just in it for the money…then when someone attacks back, you whine like a little baby girl, if you dish it out, then take it.
Now, what about Fred and his red truck?…that disqualified him at one time, does the RV disqualify Mitt?
Or csdeven, do you want me to bring up your famous defense of, if someone in the blog states something, and you defend one part, you take ownership of everything that person says. Do you remember your embarrassing argument? You shut up for about two days after making yourself a fool on that one.
So have at it you two, enjoy…but no one else cares that you two have a personal distaste for me…you should try attacking ideas and not people…or maybe the ideas are right and that is what bothers you.

right2bright on January 21, 2008 at 3:56 PM

The RNC just telephoned asking for my financial support. When I interjected that my financial donations would be made when Fred Thompson’s name was on the ticket, the caller started over with her message that any Republican would be better than a Democrat, and started with a litany against Hillary Clinton. I agreed, but told her that Fred Thompson is the only Republican who can beat Hillary Clinton, and that I would write in his name if it were not on the ballot. She paused and said that she supposed that would be ok, to which I reiterated that OF COURSE it would be OK TO WRITE IN FRED THOMPSON.

I provide my financial support to the conservative Republican platform, not to any RINO.

As a Reagan Democrat, I have already seen what happens to a party that panders to the liberals for more power. Some are disillusioned and say they’ll not even vote. I will vote for the conservative platform on the Republican ticket. I will write in Fred Thompson’s name making my point on record. Texas hasn’t voted yet, and we matter as much as any other state in this Union of Fifty.

“In a divided field [Fred's] delegates may make a difference; that’s why I’m voting for him in the Tennessee primary in two weeks.” –Bob Krumm

Fred needs to stay in the race. McCain was dead in December and look at him now. This campaign seems to turn on nothing. I still think that there will be no winner before the convention and that Fred will be the compromise candidate if he stays in. Otherwise, it will probably be Romney who is the most acceptable candidate after Fred.

duff65 on January 21, 2008 at 4:03 PM

There are many benefits to writing in Fred even if he doesn’t make it to your State Primary including not only carrying his delegates into a Convention that might not be decided but also it carries the message to the designated nominee and the GOP when selecting the VP that those values carry a lot of voters. It also carries the weight when selecting the President’s Cabinet. And that’s one thing I’ll say about the current field of candidates, they sure would make one he11 of a Cabinet!

My opinions are formed by weighing the evidence. I call you a Moonbat because you have loony conspiracy theories like Rosie O’Donnell . Raving moonbattery is not “classical conservatism”, and classical conservatives would not rant on and on about Mormons.

Like you did here

The powers that produced and paid for George’s and Mitt’s run for POTUS will never permit freedom of thought and religion amongst those born under their blood covenant. IMO, there isn’t another “Christian” cult more like Islam than they. It is no wonder that Mitt would ‘CHANGE’ as much as Obama.

I’m not certain about this “spite”, geckomon.

There is a point to make on record for the sake of supporting consistent conservative GOP principles, and standing against the liberal tide.

Though what will be, will be, now matters as much as ever.

As per your mentioning csdeven: his, vanceone, somebody#, buy danish & co. projections of “hate” onto others who criticize speaks OF THEMSELVES. They are best left to themselves as they will never see beyond their nose.

Historically, though, leaving them to their own devices didn’t work very well when the US President chose to allow Brigham Young the governorship of the Utah territory prior to the Civil War. That allowed Utah’s leaders and residents to commit murder of federal judges and the Mountain Meadows Massacre. That place has a monument and webpage, though Google has many sites for reference. Those commentors boast of bloodlines to Parley P. Pratt, defending Pratt’s “honor” and circumstances surrounding murders–projecting their bloody hate on anyone who weeps for lost innocense. That was then; this is now. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were fond of cursing adversaries through 7 generations. The wierd thing about a curse, is that whatever curse they project returns at them with more potency than imaginable. Watch your backside around that sort who would avenge a wrong with a wrong with a wrong.

I believe that faith in Christ can deflect a curse from ugly people. To those claiming to be Christian, IMO, today no Christian desecrates the unity of faith in the Holy Spirit expressed by all believers throughout all time. These days, Christians have reached the level of spirituality to be honest with their historical differences. So far as I’m concerned, trust in God.

McCain in Michgian debate said we didn’t even have a recession going on. Mitt wants to put a chicken in every pot. Hillary wants to buy the pot and stove to cook the chicken in. myamphibian on January 21, 2008 at 5:33 PM

I just saw this comment over at the DailyKos:

If you take away the “Christian this and that” noise, Mike Huckabee doesn’t sound very different from Democrats.

John McCain is pretty steadfast in his support of the Iraq war (though not Bush’s handling of ig). Other than that, he could be a Democrat.

Mitt Romney is making conservative noises now, but he was governor of Massachusetts. A Mass Republican is kind of like a Texas Democrat — a costume jewelry imitation of the real thing.

Giuliani is — Giuliani. I think he’s a Republican the way Chicago’s Mayor Daley is a Democrat — it suited his purpose.

I don’t think any of these people (including those on the Dem side) would have survived back in the days of real partisan politics — ie, when parties stood for something.

I think of the 1950s, when Republican President Dwight Eisenhower oversaw the demis of Republican sub-cancer Joseph McCarthy.

Or how about Democrats’ expulsion of the Mississipi delegation in 1964?

Even THEY know that all the candidates are democrats in RINO clothing….everyone BUT Fred!

I think “point this out” is understating it a tad…

But no, the observation has nothing to do with defending Romney or Mormonism. It has to do with attacking Fred and Fred supporters over and over again, which has to do with politics, not with a defense of Mormonism.

But it’s interesting that you think it has to do with Mormonism? Are they linked in your mind? Is there something about Fred or Fredheads that is distinctively anti-Mormon?

We say that people should not reject Mitt Romney because he’s Mormon, and I agree with that. But it’s just as true that no one should vote for him just because he’s Mormon. I’m beginning to wonder if the zeal for Mitt among certain Mormon posters is exactly the same thing as Huckabee’s appeal to some evangelicals. Maybe there’s more identity politics going on than I realized at first.

Is the bile directed against Fred Thompson because he’s competing for the same pool of voters that Mitt is? It might explain a few things. We certainly saw that dynamic amongst the Huckabee supporters.

tom on January 21, 2008 at 7:31 PM

If The Fred drops out I’ll write his name in. If The Fred goes completely off his rocker in the next few days and endorses Juan McCain well I can’t very well take the endorsement of someone completely off their rocker seriously. To settle for any of the other candidates is sending a message that it’s ok to practice blatant left wing politics your entire career and we’ll vote for you anyway. Fred should just run in the General under a different party.
