Open thread: Polls closed in SC, too close to call; Update: Narrow lead for McCain? Update: “We are not blind to the obvious,” says senior Fred advisor; Update: Fred heads home

Barone was just on Fox saying they can’t say yet who’ll win but they know for sure who won’t — Mitt and Fred, both lagging and locked in a battle for third place. Is a 15-14 “victory” for third place enough to keep this campaign going, realistically? Nope, although he’ll be quite a thorn in Mitt’s side in Florida if he limps, especially if McCain squeaks through here.

As usual, you can follow the returns at CNN or Politico; the results have already summoned the Reaper for one GOP candidate. Heavy evangelical turnout tonight too, ominously for Huck-haters, although in fairness he’s not doing nearly as well with identity politics these days as Mitt is.

Exit question: If Huck pulls it out, will Fred send over those 25 cases of Bud?

Update: NBC’s got detailed exit polls. Maverick leads Huck by three or four points among both genders. Mitt and Fred are even among women but Romney leads by two among men.

Update: I’m not accusing Romney of playing identity politics. It’s his Mormon supporters in Nevada who are playing it. How else to explain 94% support?

Update: Fred just gave his concession speech with lots of “true conservative” boilerplate, but notably didn’t say anything about his intentions. It sounded like a farewell — “the spirit of Reagan lives on” (even if his campaign doesn’t).

Update: A chill wind blows:

While he remains in the race, two sources told CNN that “it was abundantly evident to all of us” that the bar was a win or a very competitive second place in South Carolina to continue to be viable in the GOP presidential race.

Thompson has no public schedule Sunday, and is planning to consult with campaign manager Bill Lacy and other top advisers about the next move.

“We are not blind to the obvious,” said one senior campaign adviser.

But, given the muddled course of the Republican race so far, both aides said Thompson and his advisers wanted to watch the results come in tonight before making a final decision.

When push came to shove, he just … didn’t have enough cowbell.

Update: The Reaper ain’t here yet, says Carl Cameron.

Update:? Fred’s already left the state for home in Virginia. The fact that he’s not waiting around to find out if he edged Romney for third doesn’t bode well for its significance to him.

Update: Huckabee’s getting … 12% of non-evangelical voters. Even if he wins here, his reputation as a one-trick pony who can’t win in less religious states is sealed.

Everybody’s going to have to their senses and vote for Huckabee… faced with the horrible prospect of a Mccain nomination!

HaraldHardrada on January 19, 2008 at 9:55 PM

If Huckster is the nominee I will vote Democrat for the second time in my life. And I’m by far not alone on this. Believe it.

It makes me sick to my stomach to even think this could be true. If it is true, I’m glad I didn’t write that check to Fred!

Now, NOW after all this does the media suddenly remember Shamnesty, McCain Feingold and Gang of 14.

I hate those people. I really do.

For what it’s worth, Hannity has been hammering these points for a month. He’s a Giuliani shill, but I appreciate that he’s keeping McCain’s liberal proclivities in the forefront.

Really? Hmmm….

SECOND LOOK AT HANNITY!

I never watch him or that blowhard whose show precedes his because it too often has The Mustache on it. The only thing worse on FNC is Greta van Missing White Woman.

Laura on January 19, 2008 at 10:02 PM

Laura on January 19, 2008 at 9:56 PM

I doubt that. Since Fred can’t win in the base, he’d never win in the general. The only question now is who can beat the dems.

I don’t like McShamnesty, but will support him. HuckaBigot is a total no go for me. Mitt is our best shot at a conservative administration, but I don’t know if he can win the general. Rudy is the wild card. I’m gonna wait and see.

csdeven on January 19, 2008 at 10:02 PM

Just for the record, Fred is still in the race until Fred actually gets out of the race. Certainly, tonight was not a good night for Fred. But that’s the way things go. Sometimes, people vote for bad candidates. Like Bill Clinton.

I think Fred would have won tonight, except that South Carolina for some unimaginable reason actually likes McCain. Myself, I’m not just disappointed that Fred lost: I’m even more disappointed that the two worst candidates IMHO won. No conservative should be voting for McCain or Huckabee.

It does look like the Republican part is drifting back to its pre-Reagan days, when they were afraid to stand up for free markets or stand firm in foreign policy.

Hope I’m wrong.

Mitt might be an okay candidate if it comes to that. But some of the Mitt supporters are a strain…..

Update: I’m not accusing Romney of playing identity politics. It’s his Mormon supporters in Nevada who are playing it. How else to explain 94% support?

A better question one might ask is “Did Huckabee disenfranchised the Mormons by his veiled anti-Mormon positions and statements? The only other person running to consider is Fred and his campaign still resembles a beached whale.

Huck could not attack McSamnesty on immigration. And it was best that HuckaBigot was dispatched first, so no other candidate would go after McCain. We needed a McCain win in SC.

Huck will fail in Florida, the 527’s will destroy McShamnetsy in Fl and that leaves Rudy and Mitt to slug it out on Super Tuesday.

Now, off to Canada for four years!

HaraldHardrada on January 19, 2008 at 10:22 PM

Oh, you’ll be back – first time you need to see a doctor or want to engage in free speech. :-)

And their TV sucks. My TiVos would shrivel up and die from non use.

SimplyKimberly on January 19, 2008 at 10:26 PM

Well goody! Now that I don’t have to worry about that pesky border fence being put up it’ll just make my black-market incandescent light-bulb smuggling operation that much easier.

YAY!!!

stlpatriot on January 19, 2008 at 10:26 PM

Duncan Hunter is up to 994!

fourstringfuror on January 19, 2008 at 10:24 PM

944 little old ladies who thought Goldwater was on the ballot and just picked a candidate when they couldn’t find Barry’s name.

malan89 on January 19, 2008 at 10:26 PM

Its official: Hunter is out.

Whoever gets the nomination would be wise to tap Hunter for VP.

Not that I ever expected he would actually win, or even come close, he was the best conservative in there. Sad day for conservatism; Fred is the only one left that can come close being called a real conservative, and no telling how long he will stick.

Beyond Fred, we have only a slick moderate with good hair; a mentally unbalanced ‘maverick RINO; a two liberals who owould have to move way right to be considered RINOS, and one complete whack job who’s only saving grace is that he does like the Constitution.

LegendHasIt on January 19, 2008 at 10:26 PM

Has any republican won the nomination without winning south carolina??

10:31 PM and I’m declaring this a dead thread.

malan89 on January 19, 2008 at 10:31 PM

Why don’t you go here? They will share your “Fred or I’m Not Gonna Vote!” views.

malan89 on January 19, 2008 at 10:12 PM

If Fred is out, then it will be time to consider, not who’s the most conservative remaining candidate, but who is least likely to damage the country and most likely to stand against socialism, big government, and judicial activists turning the Constitution into “What do I feel like that means today.”

Romney presents himself as a conservative, but it’s a little hard to believe it. Rudy is definitely not a conservative, but at least we pretty much know what he actually is.

But if it gets down to either McCain or Huckabee, it’s time to start up a “Draft Jeb Bush!” movement.

Good call. I need a beer and need to start thinking about who to vote for in the FL primary if Fred’s out?????

jwp1964 on January 19, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Ooh, Arthur Branch just got a shout out on Law & Order.

Fred! If only Dick Wolf had run your campaign.

malan89 on January 19, 2008 at 10:27 PM

Yeah, you can play that game for a while. Deciding which rooms or occasions are ‘bulb-worthy’ but you’re gonna come crawling to me eventually.
