Open thread: Polls closed in SC, too close to call; Update: Narrow lead for McCain? Update: “We are not blind to the obvious,” says senior Fred advisor; Update: Fred heads home

Barone was just on Fox saying they can’t say yet who’ll win but they know for sure who won’t — Mitt and Fred, both lagging and locked in a battle for third place. Is a 15-14 “victory” for third place enough to keep this campaign going, realistically? Nope, although he’ll be quite a thorn in Mitt’s side in Florida if he limps, especially if McCain squeaks through here.
As usual, you can follow the returns at CNN or Politico; the results have already summoned the Reaper for one GOP candidate. Heavy evangelical turnout tonight too, ominously for Huck-haters, although in fairness he’s not doing nearly as well with identity politics these days as Mitt is.
Exit question: If Huck pulls it out, will Fred send over those 25 cases of Bud?
Update: NBC’s got detailed exit polls. Maverick leads Huck by three or four points among both genders. Mitt and Fred are even among women but Romney leads by two among men.
Update: I’m not accusing Romney of playing identity politics. It’s his Mormon supporters in Nevada who are playing it. How else to explain 94% support?
Update: Fred just gave his concession speech with lots of “true conservative” boilerplate, but notably didn’t say anything about his intentions. It sounded like a farewell — “the spirit of Reagan lives on” (even if his campaign doesn’t).
Update: A chill wind blows:
While he remains in the race, two sources told CNN that “it was abundantly evident to all of us” that the bar was a win or a very competitive second place in South Carolina to continue to be viable in the GOP presidential race.
Thompson has no public schedule Sunday, and is planning to consult with campaign manager Bill Lacy and other top advisers about the next move.
“We are not blind to the obvious,” said one senior campaign adviser.
But, given the muddled course of the Republican race so far, both aides said Thompson and his advisers wanted to watch the results come in tonight before making a final decision.
When push came to shove, he just … didn’t have enough cowbell.
Update: The Reaper ain’t here yet, says Carl Cameron.
Update:? Fred’s already left the state for home in Virginia. The fact that he’s not waiting around to find out if he edged Romney for third doesn’t bode well for its significance to him.
Update: Huckabee’s getting … 12% of non-evangelical voters. Even if he wins here, his reputation as a one-trick pony who can’t win in less religious states is sealed.

You are such a shameless shill.
Here’s a little quiz for you. Who was it who said that denying illegal aliens state benefits was, “un-Christian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life?” It was the same one who suggested that governors knowingly break the law to run interception for illegals.
I’ll give you two guesses, but you only need one.

Florence County isn’t reporting anything yet. Hucky’s message should resonate well there. Florence is the center of the economically depressed PeeDee region. I’m not sure any results there could put Hucky in the lead, though.
I am guessing Greenville’s results are coming in from the city of Greenville and not the county.

They’re showing McCain’s camp on TV now. Its amazing how people will cheer someone who will hand over their children’s birthright to the highest bidder.
Sad day for this country.
Every generation before has preserved their country for the next generation until these 60’s era baby boomers, they are giving it away to the 3rd world. Hurting their own people is seen as a virtue….unbelievable.
They are without a doubt, the weak link in the chain of this country’s history.

William Amos on January 19, 2008 at 9:10 PM
well 1177, but whose counting…
doriangrey on January 19, 2008 at 9:10 PM
I don’t suppose I’ll ever understand what happened this election season, but I’m switching to Independent. Fairly obvious the party isn’t what is was even 4 years ago. Over-run with RINO’s and people saying “You may not like the candidate, but you need to vote for him or (Insert name) will get elected!” That’s the talk of those who’s principles are negotiable, that are willing to sacrifice ground on issues if they can bask in the glory of accomplishing one thing as everything else around them crumbles.
Now I have Romney as a strong second choice, but I just don’t think he’ll win it out versus McCain in the end. To many independents who would vote Democrat choose him instead. Huckabee might win the nomination on a long shot, but I just don’t see him getting more than 40% of the overall vote in the general once the Democrats bring his record to light. And they will. In many ways Fred was like the Conservative movement to me. Slow, sure of itself and beliefs, staying the course. But didn’t take into account the identity politics of the day. Or the fact that everyone jumped into the race a whole 6-8 month earlier.
I honestly wonder if come the next election cycle we might not see a new party, like when the Republicans first broke off from the Whigs. We may have to do so again just to keep the idea’s we value from being snuffed out from the Leftward movement the GOP seems to be rushing into.

malan89 on January 19, 2008 at 9:27 PM
fred didn’t lose because he is conservative, he lost because he wasn’t appealing on a personal level for a long time. that has changed recently (at least for me – and of course it is remarkable how far he fell so fast after beginning at such a height), and the merits of that criteria can be debated, but it is at least somewhat true that the biggest role of the president is as a personality – whether it is the bully pulpit, in negotiating and/or hammering through legislation, dealing with the media, or dealing with the world. so personality and persona are not insignificant. and that is where fred’s failings lie, not in his politics. and that is why it is wrong for the few ‘idealists’ (sounds liberal to me) and ‘principled conservatives’ to abandon ship, so to speak, so readily.
