Open thread: Polls closed in SC, too close to call; Update: Narrow lead for McCain? Update: “We are not blind to the obvious,” says senior Fred advisor; Update: Fred heads home

Barone was just on Fox saying they can’t say yet who’ll win but they know for sure who won’t — Mitt and Fred, both lagging and locked in a battle for third place. Is a 15-14 “victory” for third place enough to keep this campaign going, realistically? Nope, although he’ll be quite a thorn in Mitt’s side in Florida if he limps, especially if McCain squeaks through here.

As usual, you can follow the returns at CNN or Politico; the results have already summoned the Reaper for one GOP candidate. Heavy evangelical turnout tonight too, ominously for Huck-haters, although in fairness he’s not doing nearly as well with identity politics these days as Mitt is.

Exit question: If Huck pulls it out, will Fred send over those 25 cases of Bud?

Update: NBC’s got detailed exit polls. Maverick leads Huck by three or four points among both genders. Mitt and Fred are even among women but Romney leads by two among men.

Update: I’m not accusing Romney of playing identity politics. It’s his Mormon supporters in Nevada who are playing it. How else to explain 94% support?

Update: Fred just gave his concession speech with lots of “true conservative” boilerplate, but notably didn’t say anything about his intentions. It sounded like a farewell — “the spirit of Reagan lives on” (even if his campaign doesn’t).

Update: A chill wind blows:

While he remains in the race, two sources told CNN that “it was abundantly evident to all of us” that the bar was a win or a very competitive second place in South Carolina to continue to be viable in the GOP presidential race.

Thompson has no public schedule Sunday, and is planning to consult with campaign manager Bill Lacy and other top advisers about the next move.

“We are not blind to the obvious,” said one senior campaign adviser.

But, given the muddled course of the Republican race so far, both aides said Thompson and his advisers wanted to watch the results come in tonight before making a final decision.

When push came to shove, he just … didn’t have enough cowbell.

Update: The Reaper ain’t here yet, says Carl Cameron.

Update:? Fred’s already left the state for home in Virginia. The fact that he’s not waiting around to find out if he edged Romney for third doesn’t bode well for its significance to him.

Update: Huckabee’s getting … 12% of non-evangelical voters. Even if he wins here, his reputation as a one-trick pony who can’t win in less religious states is sealed.

38% in McCain has a 7,000 vote lead on Huck. Thompson has an 1,100 vote lead on Romney

Huckabee closing the gap in Lexington County. I’ll stand by my prediction of Hucky by a whisker, with a McCain whine about Horry County.

Obviously you are new. Csdeven is our resident extremist, our Fred Jihadist. He has bashed Fred from the beginning, he lives for that, kind of weird, but endearing. He once spent about a week bashing Fred for renting a red truck and drove it around the state collecting votes…of course since Mitt has rented a RV and taken it across country, csdeven thinks its okay now to do that…good politics and all (what irony).
Most refer to him when we want to make a ridiculously extreme point, even AP uses him as a prop.
And we all have had a good laugh at his mis-quotes, and lack of understanding…but a word to the un-wise.
Lay off that language, learn to deal with it with humor (remember the “secret papers” csdeven?—sorry to bring that up).
Don’t get personal, one other poster does that, and she is carrying around a lot more weight in anger, it shows in her posts, they are riddled with anger and mis-statements. And is now also a subject of ridicule.
You will fall into that category, then you will be banned…I have watched it happen for two years now…you will be next.
You have entered the quicksand pit of stupidity…if you fight you sink faster…

When Fred endorses McCain, are the Fredheads going to admit that their guy isn’t what they thought he was?

huckfan on January 19, 2008 at 8:26 PM

Fred would drop in my eyes, of course.

Regardless, wouldn’t change my opinion of Huck. Which is far from a good opinion.

Why in the world are we voting for McCain or Huckabee. I swear… the conservative movement is destroyed by the fakes.

They aren’t conservatives! What the hell is wrong with everyone? This is blowing my mind!

I will never vote for McCain or Huckabee.

Shame on you South Carolina. Shame on you. Pathetic!

William Amos on January 19, 2008 at 8:35 PM

Because it blows out Huckabee that’s why. It’s his last stand according to Mark Levin, and I agree.

Huck’s Last Stand/ [Mark R. Levin]

Now, if Huckabee loses in S.C., what’s left for him? He has said he will win there. A third of the GOP is said to be Evangelical. If he can’t win there with his kind of campaigning, where can he win next?

UPDATE: Correction: Chris Wallace says over half of GOP is made up of Evangelicals in S.C.

Mitt is a genius strategist.

malan89 on January 19, 2008 at 8:40 PM

Fred stays in, collects a significant number of delegates and a percentage of votes. Then goes to the convention where he has some leverage to bargain for conservative policy.

Rudy is doing the same thing, but I fear Rudy is doing it for some other reason.

Huckabee thinks he can win. If not, he’ll try to shanghai the convention, or score a big position in the administration.

McCain thinks he can win it because he thinks he can draw enough democrat votes to win in the general election. I don’t think that democrats and pretend independents who are really disguise democrats will vote for anyone other than Hillary.

Conservatives are being screwed over by the RINOs and the liberal democrat infiltrators who what to ‘take back their country’.

Its gonna be a disaster.

Another lawyer in Thompson’s law firm represented the two Libyans charged in the Pan Am 103 bombing. Fred gave his colleague some advice about procedural issues which amounted to about three and a half billable hours. Oooo. Horrors.

Huckabee’s getting … 12% of non-evangelical voters. Even if he wins here, his reputation as a one-trick pony who can’t win in less religious states is sealed.

I think that may be the biggest story of the night, for the reason AP noted… in a world of momentum and “what have you done lately,” Huck has only won in a state a few weeks ago where everyone talked about the evangelicals coming out as the big story. Otherwise, he gets a bunch of blah results and only impressive when the word “evangelical” comes back. But that said, Fred very well might have spoiled Huck… the counties where Huck should be really beating McCain like a rented mule end up having strong 3rd places for Fred.

Wineaholic on January 19, 2008 at 8:59 PM
