Mexican state whines about influx of Mexican workers

Here’s the story. When I came to this section, I lol’d.
A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to say Arizona’s new employer sanctions law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state.
At a news conference, the legislators said Sonora – Arizona’s southern neighbor, made up of mostly small towns – cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools it will face as illegal Mexican workers here return to their hometowns without jobs or money.
Now they know what it’s been like north of the border.
“How can they pass a law like this?” asked Mexican Rep. Leticia Amparano Gamez, who represents Nogales.
“There is not one person living in Sonora who does not have a friend or relative working in Arizona,” she said in Spanish.
Well, that’s the problem, isn’t it. Rep. Gamez earns an epic fail. And so will Mexico if it can’t figure out how to take care of its own citizens without exporting them.

Hey, I have an idea. Let’s nominate McCain who will give into Mexico’s every demand.

That’s easy, Senora Baggadouche! It’s OUR country.
Maybe we should use the techniques that their country uses for illegals form Guatemala. How does that sound?

OR…..how about a trade-off.
How about they turn over their all of the oil to us instead?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on January 19, 2008 at 6:58 PM
Well, the potential downside from border enforcement is social upheaval in Mexico (no safety valve; no US dollars sent back) leading to a Hugo Chavez-like or Fidel Castro-like figure rising to power. “The Norte Americanos es malo.”
That’ll make the past influx from their look like a family picnic.
It’s always sumpthing.

In other news, a border patrol agent was struck and killed by a vehicle that crossed the border into California illegally.

Ahh, the double whammy for Sonora, increased demand for services with the returning workers and a loss of income from the remittances. Hmm, sounds vaguely like increased demand for services from illegal immigrants and depressed wages from an increased supply of unskilled and low skilled laborers.
Here’s a thought, why not figure out why there’s jobs in Arizona but not in Sonora and fix that?

Ay, que LASTIMA!!
(Oh, what a PITY!)
…Now maybe they get an inkling of what they’ve been doing to US! I sure wish these Arizona laws get copied by many other states. I’m all for legal immigration…my own grandparents on both sides immigrated here. NOBODY has the “right” to come into any country illegally. And saying that isn’t racism. It’s all about fair treatment. If MY relatives had to come in the legal way, EVERYBODY’S should, is how I feel about it. Let some liberal come here and call THAT…a desire for equal fairness….a racist viewpoint. And if they do…I wanna hear WHY they think it’s racist…’coz it’s NOT.

How pathetic. Has there ever been a more worthless government? They make ours look positively effective. Well, ok, maybe that’s being a little overly generous.
Regardless, I have nothing but disdain for that country. Someday, someone is going to have to tell them to grow up and start acting like a sovereign nation. Honestly, it’s like they’re America’s thirty something child living in our basement.

Sweet. This made my day!
I heard on the radio today that it is suddenly almost impossible to find enough workers for construction jobs in Tulsa, so they’re trying to recruit local vo-tech and college students, and construction “prices” — i.e., wages — are going higher. On the radio yesterday, I heard that 20,000 Mexicans had left the Tulsa area (out of an “undocumented community” of about 50,000 in a city of 400,000). Related to our new workplace enforcement laws…?
elladeon on January 19, 2008 at 7:20 PM
So, how did Sonora handle the demand before the immigrants left in the first place?
This is not a problem for Arizona, or for the US, for that matter. Mexican solutions to Mexican problems!

Why, don’t they know the combined cost of health care, free food, housing and education is more than offset by cheap labor.
Since Mexico doesn’t doesn’t care one bit about free anything they should be really happy to get fresh cheap labor.
Apparently hypocrisy is the national motto south of the border.
If the pressure climbs high enough they can Vive La Revelucion!

We don’t need to wait for the knuckleheads in DC to make this law nationwide. The states can do it on their own, just like AZ. Nothing like good old fashioned Constitutionalism (I know it’s not a word, but it fits).

Don’t you worry ‘backs’. When ‘white trash Willy’ & his wife or Barracko or Cain, oops, McCain or Hucklberry Finn get in, they’ll be sure and put it back like it was. You’ll get your free education, thru college, free medical & dental and plenty of welfare money for you & the relations south of the border. America has lots of money. Whoever of the above gets elected I’m sure will make mexican our new official language and make everybody learn it so you feel at home. Hillary might even give you a free condo in town, to be close to your job, and a summer home in thre Hamptons and maybre a few hundred thousand dollars to get you by till you’re settled here. The voters this year will show how sorry they feel for your hardship now and will make it right. What a bunch of crap, huh. Who cares what the mexicans in Nogales think. Rest assured tho, if any of the above get elected – there ain’t gonna be a fence!

fred5678 on January 19, 2008 at 9:16 PM
Be of good cheer … it’s already working in four states , more to come. Only 46 to go, althoug maybe HI may be safe for a while, And AK, too. Make that 44.
And if the states “do the job Bush and Congress won’t do” maybe we’ll get lucky and have the problem solved before McCain, Rudy, or a Dem. push for shamnesty next year.

This reminds of when Vicente Fox came on the Oreilly factor and was saying that Mexicans have a right to work in the U.S. I was stunned by his audacity. The more I learned about the mexican gov’s machine that enables and encourages their citizens to cross the border, work and send money back to the madreland. 3rd largest source of income for Mexico.. US dollars wired back by illegals. We’ve gotta shake these pests quick.
whiskeytango on January 19, 2008 at 10:54 PM
I actually lived in Sonora and in Nogales where this story takes place. Nogales is a border town, a lot of illegals who get deported or deport themselves, end up in Nogales. It would be tough having them dumped on any city, but Nogales is known for rampant crime and drug problems with little economic growth and this is magnified by the immigration problem.
Imagine having about 5-600 American ex-patriots dumped into your hometown without any jobs or family to support them every week. It’d destroy your economy. That’s what it’s like for them.
It’s not Nogales’ or Sonora’s fault that people cross illegally, but they sure bear the brunt of the burden for those people’s actions and have a legtimate complaint no matter how ironic it sounds.

Whiskey Tango,
Not deliberately wanting to be a snit but I’ll unfortunately come across as one anyhoo.
Actually, “Padreland” would be more accurate. Homeland in spanish is “Patria” which literally, means “Fatherland”.
Which also, when translated into English, unfortunately has an unpleasant whiff of a “third reich” ring it.
Shirotayama on January 19, 2008 at 11:45 PM
Luckedout,
My sympathy level is nonexistant. In the county where I live we spend over ONE BILLION dollars on illegals health care, welfare, food stamps, schooling etc. all because our federal government and my county government has decided not to enforce the immigration laws. Oh, let us not forget the deaths due to illegals driving drunk and smashing into people, illegals killing and robbing etc.

What a clear indication of how badly the feds have been rolling over every time some Mexican official whines about something. Now, a state passes a law, and they can’t believe anyone here might take their illegal border jumping seriously.
By the way, as for housing, perhaps they could offer some subprime mortgages to their returning citizens like they were offered here.

Mexico has plenty of land there really isn’t any reason those returning back to move farther south into touristy areas such as Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, or Cancun. There are plenty of Brits and Germans who vacation in those parts and spend “muy dinero!” Then again Mexicans are very territorial and they don’t even trust each other!

I reject the premise that it’s the obligation of any government to take care of its citizens (or another country’s citizens) if that means socialized solutions. I suppose that part of the problem in this regard is being solved by Arizona by rejecting this premise.
One would think that Mexico would give capitalism a better try. What an opportunity for businesses to take advantage of the influx of Mexican workers. As long as those businesses aren’t in fear of being nationalized by Mexico, it’d be great for them.

Haven’t there been reports that because so many have jumped the border to work in the U.S. that Mexico was having it’s own shortage of skilled workers? And, they were trying to come up with ideas to replace them? Well now, have we got a deal for them. When they can absorb about 50% of the ones that have lived here illegally for years, I’ll consider playing the tourist down there again.
As far as leaving a spouse and house full of kids for the taxpayer to support here, have to agree with drjohn it does speak volumnes about character and the much abused “family values” our elected critters keep throwing out.

I hear birds singing
Did any Americans realize free trade would include exporting workers?
The net result of free trade between Mexico and the US:
1. Wealthy businessese in the US made a lot of money selling consumer goods to Mexico
2. Wealthy businesses in the US made an ungodly volcano of profit by replacing American citizen workers with illegal Mexican workers for service jobs, and to manufacture goods to sell to the world
3. The American worker, many displaced by illegals, retained his legal and tax obligations as a citizen while being required to shoulder the legal and tax obligations of the illegal workers
4. In the final battle to preserve the system politicians are attempting to give votes to the imported workers
The lower middle class American household has gone from households where both parents worked to households where many parents work two jobs. I have witnessed workers in $8 an hour jobs rush to their second job, the one that buys food
They have tried to brainwash us to think we cannot run our nation by law.
E pluribus unum is our battle cry. One nation from many, not many nations from one!
entagor on January 20, 2008 at 1:00 PM
The world’s population may double by 2050 and virtually all of the population increase will be in developing countries. Already, there are many such countries exporting manual labor to the developed world and who rely on remittances sent home to stave off unrest. Mexico would be a basket case if all the illegals returned home, and the troubles in southern Mexico, where people can’t work in factories along the US border, would spread everywhere. The mass migration of people out of poverty stricken areas into the developed world has been ongoing for years now, and will only get worse.
