Video: Star Trek XI Teaser

posted at 7:23 pm on January 18, 2008 by Bryan

Some enterprising soul managed to capture this when it played in front of Cloverfield today. Bless ‘em. And for a Star Trek film it looks…cool.

I’m sure I’ll get over that once I see the actual film.

The grittiness in what little you can see suggests that the Trek producers may have learned a thing or two from Serenity/Firefly. That would be a good direction to go in.

Another? Aren’t they played out by now? And when I watch the original series, no man that ever sat in the Captain’s chair was hotter than Kirk. IMHO

i actually got chills when the original them played.

tomas on January 18, 2008 at 7:30 PM

Eh not enough to tell. Trek started killing itself when it booted Ron Moore (Of Battlestar Galactica fame) and kept Brannan Braga. The plots were all retreads of each other.

Moore learned to tell a Sci Fi story as a novel rather an 20 short stories slapped together.

William Amos on January 18, 2008 at 7:30 PM

This is a “Prequel”. Kirk is back in the saddle of the original Enterprise assuming command from Captain Christopher Pike. They also show how Kirk beat the Kobiyashi Maru test.

Oh God! I’m sick! I actually know all that stuff!! :(

SouthernGent on January 18, 2008 at 7:34 PM

(Ach, ptui! John Glenn reference, blecch!)

Not much to go on, but if they don’t emulate the visual/design style of the original series, I’ll consider it a failure.

BL@KBIRD on January 18, 2008 at 7:35 PM

A handful of shots of men welding, and what looked like the Enterprise-A from the 1980s movies. I wonder how much of that, if any, is from the actual movie?

But yes, they do get brownie points for being bold enough in Hollywood to actually say “mankind” (via Neil A.) and “Christmas” in the same ad!

Ed Driscoll on January 18, 2008 at 7:35 PM

Ummm….for some reason, while I love science fiction, I have never been a freak for either Star Trek or Star Wars. I enjoy both though. Oh, but for some reason, those freaks are attracted into becoming my friends. I was lucky enough to be one of the first to see Star Wars episode I. Not becuase I camped out for a ticket, but because some of the freaks that did had someone cancel and picked me to come along. Wow! Anyway, I’ll see this when I see it. I’m sure I haven’t seen all of the others yet. This gives me time to do so.

Is it a new script, or a movie version of the book “Enterprise”?

Trivia: Anyone know the origin of “NCC-1701″?

JetBoy on January 18, 2008 at 7:45 PM

There’s nine zillion rumors, but the semi-official word was that 1, 7, and 0 were easy to recognize and 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 were easily confused.

Matt Jeffries says he settled on it being the 17th design model, serial number 01, thus 1701.

NC was based on US naval designations, and they added a C to represent the future peace/alliance between the US and the USSR (CCCP).

Thus, the Enterprise was the first of the 17th class of ships built by the world alliance created by the peace betwen the US and USSR.

Which kind of doesn’t make sense because the Constitution should have been 01 of the Constitution class. It should have been “Enterprise Class.”

But it’s fiction, so why should it make sense?

Merovign on January 18, 2008 at 8:02 PM

And to peg myself as a hopeless geek, they’ve always shown starship construction in spacedocks by people in spacesuits, in a vacuum.

This one shows people welding in atmosphere.

But it looks cooler that way.

Also, I hope they don’t screw the pooch like they did with voyager, and it would be nice to see a new series, as long as no one from the old series was ALLOWED to work on it.

The old Star Trek blood is hopelessly inbred. Make your homages to Roddenberry if you must, but don’t try to recreate what he did, ’cause what he did was so 60s it hurts.

On the trivia “NCC-1701″….yeah, there’s all kinds of rumors and speculation…

What I heard since I was a kid was this: Gene Rodenberry lived in my hometown of New Canaan, CT (where the “NCC” comes from) and “1701″ was the year the town was founded. Only problem with that is it wasn’t 1701, but 1801.

Enterprise NCC-1701 was a Constitution-class starship, right?

Star Trek was basically Roddenberry’s view on technology and how it could positively effect human kind. Because of technology disease and hunger were wiped out and humanity found that if it banded together they could accomplish great things. Earth society became a weird mix between socialism and capitalism. I’m not sure where to find it but there is a document some where that details this society and how it might work. In spite of that however Star Trek is in no way socialist propaganda. Anyone one thinks otherwise is a commie; there I said it!

I just want Bruce Lee to come back and do a great sequel to “Enter the Dragon” in which he ends up in an all Islamic Jihad martial arts tournament, and beats the crap out of 110,000 Jihadis, beats the body guards of all the bad guy leaders, and beats their best champions, then, in the finally, takes on hundreds of attackers, beating the crap out of them, while Chuck Norris, Jet Lee, Steven Segal, Mark Dascascos, The Shaolin Monks, the Jeet Kune Do guys, the Wing Chun guys, the Brazilian Jiu Jiutsu guys, the UFC guys, and a few others, as well as the Navy Seals, the US Marines, the Army Rangers, tne Brits, the Aussies, the Brazilians, and the Japanese come and join him as they all open a giant can of whoop ass on al Qaeda, Taliban, and company – handing Jihadis their irreversible defeat – their Waterloo.

William2006 on January 18, 2008 at 11:30 PM

By the way, for those who care about my previous fantasy film and real life wish, Bruce Lee passed away in the 1970s.

I do not expect him to come back and make another “Enter the Dragon.”

William2006 on January 18, 2008 at 11:32 PM

I must chime in here, pointless as it is to do so.

Babylon 5 and the new Battlestar Galactica are far better than Star Trek and Star Wars.

The B5 episode “The Coming of Shadows” catapulted B5 well beyond anything Star Trek ever dreamed of. The closest the Federation ever got was when Deep Space 9 started to emulate B5 (in its own way) with the Dominion War.

That said, I have seen every ST and SW movie (including Phantom Menace-the horror!) and I am certain I will see this one as well.

I’m looking forward to this as well. As much as I enjoyed all of the shows, the series needs new blood and it needs to be grittier.

One of the most impressive aspects of Star Trek though has always been the passion of the fans. When you have groups of fans gathering together to make their own non-profit episodes based on Star Trek, that’s love.

I’ve seen more than a few of the fan films, and they are very well done. The quality of the special effects really impressed me. Links to episodes here.

Romeo13 on January 18, 2008 at 10:54 PM

I remember that episode, a day in the life of the two maintenance workers. I have many favorites, the final Vorlon and Shadow battle scenes were some of the best computer graphics yet. Sheridan final voyage to Coriana 6 where Shadow war ended and Lorien takes him to the galaxy’s rim. The decommissioning of B5 was sad. B4 going back in time…. so may good stories.

It was good story telling, and that’s why I liked Star Trek. Good story telling. Roddenberry had a good vision of technology and what the future could be. A wagon train to the stars.

I owe my direction in life to Star Trek and it’s vision.

Im afraid for this movie because it is NOT a movie adaption of the book “Enterprise”. I think this will be like star wars ep III. No matter how bad it is people will go see it. But I am hoping it will be good.

(Answer: 27 dresses was better. Cloverfield was simply a Godzilla version of the Blairwitch with an equally dissapointing ending.)

KHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed. There were MANY pro-American thing in the original Star Trek. One of my favorites was the spread of Democracy throughout the world in the future such as the fact Uhura was born in the United States of Africa.

The closest the Federation ever got was when Deep Space 9 started to emulate B5 (in its own way) with the Dominion War.

DS9 was the best of the Star Trek series. There was a long story line, but they still put twists in every episode to make it very interesting. No real stars in the cast, just solid acting and writing.

Star Trek the TV series was fun, the movies were overdone.

Star Wars was ‘cute’ but over hyped.

Babylon 5 was interesting, but the episodes were hard to find.

BattleStar Galactica started out great, then seemed to lose it’s magic. The character development seemed to get twisted.

The Star Trek imitators were just that; imitators.

Serenity was an interesting idea; couldn’t seem to get any traction.

Farscape was clue less. Claudia Black is .. uhm.. attractive.

StarGate the TV series was outstanding. It added SciFi window dressing to the ‘Perils of Pauline’ formula. Without Richard Dean Anderson, it is a different show. They developed several interesting story lines that have not been explored in any other TV SciFi that I’ve seen. The movie was good, also.

StarGate Atlantis, as a spin off, isn’t so bad. You just have to be willing to believe.

The 5th Element, just plain fun.

Pitch Black, and The Chronicles of Riddick have become my current favorite escapes from reality.

As though anyone cares about my opinion.

I just wish I could have kept my 30 year collection of Analog. The pain of discarding all those stories still haunts me. No storage room, you see. Unfortunately, Analog went leftist/socialist/fantasy in the ’70′s.

Oh, yea, Dune: the version by Laurentiis sucked, really.
The version by John Harrison was way off target. The Children of Dune by Greg Yaitanes was nearly perfect. But the Book was better.

Somebody should do Heinlein’s “Time enough for love” as a TV series, but leave the sex out of it.

If you have the time, watch the NASA channel for the real stuff.

Sorry for the book but- saw it tonight (Cloverfield) and just had to sound off on what I thought.

Tell ya what- after getting back a while back from theater (saw it at Edgewater, across the Hudson from midtown itself which of crouse, kinda added something to things), and sipping “pleasantly nervously” (yet damn enjoyably) on a nice glass of 10 year Taylor tawny- if J.J. Abrams is involved with this new Star Trek, and I’m near certain he is, it is going to be different from any expectations you may have.

Cloverfield’s not going to be for everyone, but I have a sneaky suspicion that fans of the monster genre really should see it, as it provides the kind of experience we as fans of such tales wish we could always see things from.

It’s first person all the way, and I dug it sizeably. The effects were stunning, and very well timed, wrapping themselves into being part of the story rather than standing on their own- which they easily could have. The tantalizing bits in which you see the monster (and his, eh, little buddies?) look and feel real. The mayhem, and being right in the midst of it feels very realistic.

Telling you, and perhaps this is just the fanboy who has ALWAYS wanted to watch this type of thing with my own eyes, I mean this was a break-thru experience not only for this genre- but for film in general.

For the first time, really ever for me, this was the first, entirely first person perspective that I ever bought & enjoyed because of that perspective. Not just because it was “artsy” or clever- but because it made me feel part of a mind-numbing experience- and in a BIG BIG way- for the monster genre.

They NAILED the pacing of it which was absolutely crucial for an entire film presented by handheld camera and from first person perspective all the way through. Well paced = doesn’t drive ya nuts and gives you well-timed breathers between shaky chase scenes- in which the shake just makes ya feel you’re running for your life right with everyone else.

Abrams has the stones to take that different look. Maybe if anyone can bring back the Enterprise & her crew, Mr. Cloverfield would be that guy.

Shadows would OWN the Borg…. LOL…

Vere Kodo!!!… I need a drinkk……

Romeo13 on January 18, 2008 at 10:30 PM

Forgive B5 God. Romeo13 has done my job. The borg would have no chance, their shields unable to modify to Shadow weaponry. And when they try to run, the Shadows would throw a couple mines in the way. It wouldn’t being OWNing, it would be PWNing.

The best cinematic piece, heck best piece period has and will be forever Peter Jurasik as Londo describing the Earth-Minbari War.

BTW is Vere Kodo suppose to be Vir Cotto?

Dude. That’s just not cool. Gotta show AF some love (even if they invite the “ghost hunters” to Wright-Pat).
