Should Fred’s supporters abandon him tomorrow for … Huckabee?

posted at 8:30 pm on January 18, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

T-minus 24 hours and counting until, in all likelihood, his political career’s over. I can’t resist one last poke at the Fredhead beehive for old time’s sake.

The argument comes from Patrick Ruffini: Since Huckabee probably doesn’t have the money or organization to run the table on Super Ultra Mega Tuesday but McCain does, shouldn’t South Carolina’s Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson supporters defect tomorrow and vote for Huck to blunt Mac’s momentum heading into Florida? That’s an easy yes in the first two cases but in Fred’s case it would mean the end. Has the time come to take Ol’ Yeller out back? Ruffini says … yes:

If you’re a Romney or a Rudy guy, this is a relative no-brainer. This will be tougher for FredHeads, since their guy has made a stand in the state. But with less than 24 hours to go, and Fred running no better than a weak third, it is probably time to face facts. It’s too bad, because conservatives deserve Fred Thompson as a choice, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening.

John Tabin at Reason likewise fears the Reaper:

Alas, Thompson has hardly taken the race by storm. Glenn Reynolds wrote last month that he might have joined Volokh et al. in endorsing Thompson if he hadn’t observed how poorly Thompson’s campaign is run behind the scenes. That poorly run campaign has yielded poor results. Thompson’s low-key affect and introverted personality made him ill-suited to the hands-on retail politicking that Iowans expect, and he edged out John McCain for third place in the Iowa caucuses by just three tenths of a percentage point despite spending much more time than McCain stumping in the Hawkeye State (McCain focused on New Hampshire, where he won). He made almost no effort in the New Hampshire and Michigan primaries, where he got less than 2 percent and less than 4 percent of the vote, respectively…

Perhaps something will change the dynamics of the race in the remaining hours before South Carolina Republicans go to the polls tomorrow, and Thompson will catch a break. But at the moment, his prospects don’t appear to give fans of smaller government any reason to abandon the pessimism that has by now become all too familiar.

Re: how poorly run Fred’s campaign is/was, be sure to see this Mark Steyn item at the Corner if you missed it last night. Has the time come, ‘Heads? If the polls hold and Fred finishes fourth with less than half of McCain’s vote, Romney’s going to be your guy anyway come Sunday morning. Why not vote strategically tomorrow?

I offer you this to remember the man by. Meanwhile, here’s the state of conservatism in 2008: A RINO touting the kind words of another RINO in, of all places, South Carolina. Between them they’ve got 50% of the vote. Good lord.

the majority of people do not know what shorting is let alone how to do it. Most baby boomers are starting to retire, think they might need that 10-15%?

And it’s not 10-15%. the banks have lost more than 50% of their vaule. homebuilders have lost more than 80%. Auto companies have lost >50%, techs have lost 20-40% of their vaule. Industruials like GE, UTX are breaking down. We are not done going down. We could see 50-80% losses in the market.

And you do not have a recession when banks fail. You have a depression. There is a big difference. this is not hype. I have been trading stocks for 20 years. This is not hype.

…and I’m still waiting for a connection between the Libyan terrorists who blew up the plane and Nazis. I’m not looking for six degrees of separation. I’m looking for justification to call these two nazis, because I know there is none, because this twit over here made the connection based on the fact that they both hate jews. That’s. All. The. Logic. He. Used.

MadisonConservative on January 19, 2008 at 1:35 AM

If you’re angry that I’m pointing out that some people overlook those liberal tendencies because of his hair, maybe you should consider your priorities a little more carefully.

you are obviously too deluded in your Fred love to realize that the above is an insult to Romney (his appeal is just looks) and to his supporters (they are shallow)

Anyway, I wish Fred luck tomorrow, if he does drop out and endorse McCain I’ll be looking for your explanation on how that fits with those “core principals”

What you stated isn’t simply interjecting your opinion. In fact, just because you have an opinion, doesn’t it make it automatically right for print. You accused all your detractors as hating evangelicals. That is just untrue and a dishonest ploy to distract from your even weaker argument: supporting Huckabee as a conservative for the Republican nominee.

A reminder:

None of you guys minded when evangelicals voted for GWB, but now that they vote for one of their own, you show your true colors — secular bigots. I can smell your anti-Evangelical hate a mile away.

I disagree with you on the issues because of your candidate choice and your candidate’s positions, your Christianity being a non-factor.

I could care less if the NYT went to zero. I like Fred as I have repeatly stated on this site over the last year. This is not a conservative/liberal thing. This is an american problem. Why do you think the dems and reps finally agreed speedily to the stimulus? You think that was just a lark. Two bitter camps fighting over everything for the last year suddenly calls a ceasefire and proposes a rebate in very quick and fast time for a government bill? You think they just said hey this sounds good let’s do this? In the middle of an election year when the economy can be used to each parties strength they would just agree to give a key issue up like that for the hell of it?
God learn to put two and two together before you hurt yourself.

Really. Let’s see. In 1942 the US and USSR were allies. 10 years later they were enemies. So your little catchphrase is rather pedantic.

In addition, Soviets, Nazis, Poles, Christians, Muslims, Klan members, and about 1000 other groups hate jews. Does that mean they’re all friends?

I’m so sick of people who, instead of summarizing solid, proven ideas with simple phrases, go instead with phrases that sound good, and then stumble about realizing it doesn’t have a damned thing to do with reality.

I probably should mention the 2 fine grandsons he gave us as they constantly cheer me up. As I see it, we’ve got 2 great potential Bears players here. Now all I have to do is get my daughter to adulthood. Silly girl constantly works at being my favorite son, and she told me I was her ‘hero’ when she was 13. Apparently she still believes that. ;o)

OK, the Dolly Madison reference was a bit tortured… but,

Then you must be a nazi.

I don’t care who you are, that’s funny right there! :c)

You mean terrorist? Wait, jihadist? Cylon? Dang, what is it?

geckomon on January 19, 2008 at 2:16 AM

Hey Mister Grammer. Do you understand what ramifications this has?

ratings agency downgrades of bond insurers sent the market tumbling. On Friday, a Bank of America Corp. analyst cut its ratings on three bond insurers — MBIA Inc., Ambac Financial Group and Security Capital Assurance Ltd. — to “neutral” from “buy.”
MBIA fell 67 cents, or 7 percent, to $8.55 after a sharp drop Thursday.

Ambac rebounded from Thursday’s drop, though, rising 34 cents, or 5.5 percent, to $6.58. The company said Friday it will ditch its previous plan to raise $1 billion in capital, a decision many investors considered an ill-advised move to maintain its ratings.
Security Capital Assurance fell 17 cents, or 9.3 percent, to $1.65.

Let me guess just hype. right?

I mean it’s not like the rating acency’s just downgraded the linchpin of every bank and brokerage house that is holding insured home loans. Making the potential loss from those bad loans 100% to the banks bottom lines is it? I mean citi just worte off 18 billion dollars what’s another 500 billion in bad loans that are now not insured?

I’m sure those stockholders, pension funds, state governments, banks, brokerages, holding those loans would never every care about a little thing like insurance on bad loans. right? I mean I’m sure all the banks will just be lining up Tuesday to issue home loans with 100% risk and no possibility of getting insurance on those loans. No big deal.

Nice catchphrases. Now tell me what he has actually proposed he will do. And I don’t mean “attain energy independence”. That’s pure BS. No president in 2009, even if they attain two terms, can achieve energy independence. So I know already one of his points is complete bulls***.

You shouldn’t make the mistake of linking grammar with intelligence; they aren’t always linked. For whatever reason Unseen doesn’t take the time to practice perfect grammar and spelling in his posts, yet in my opinion he’s one of the most articulate commentators here at Hot Air.

My website is protected by the Super-HuckChristCo-AntiNazi firewall.

It tells me how I should live because God downloads instructions to it daily, and then blocks all Nazis, which supposedly also blocks Muslims because of some weird patch some guy put out on the internet.

Strangely, lots of Muslims seem to get through anyway.
