Should Fred’s supporters abandon him tomorrow for … Huckabee?

posted at 8:30 pm on January 18, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

T-minus 24 hours and counting until, in all likelihood, his political career’s over. I can’t resist one last poke at the Fredhead beehive for old time’s sake.

The argument comes from Patrick Ruffini: Since Huckabee probably doesn’t have the money or organization to run the table on Super Ultra Mega Tuesday but McCain does, shouldn’t South Carolina’s Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson supporters defect tomorrow and vote for Huck to blunt Mac’s momentum heading into Florida? That’s an easy yes in the first two cases but in Fred’s case it would mean the end. Has the time come to take Ol’ Yeller out back? Ruffini says … yes:

If you’re a Romney or a Rudy guy, this is a relative no-brainer. This will be tougher for FredHeads, since their guy has made a stand in the state. But with less than 24 hours to go, and Fred running no better than a weak third, it is probably time to face facts. It’s too bad, because conservatives deserve Fred Thompson as a choice, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening.

John Tabin at Reason likewise fears the Reaper:

Alas, Thompson has hardly taken the race by storm. Glenn Reynolds wrote last month that he might have joined Volokh et al. in endorsing Thompson if he hadn’t observed how poorly Thompson’s campaign is run behind the scenes. That poorly run campaign has yielded poor results. Thompson’s low-key affect and introverted personality made him ill-suited to the hands-on retail politicking that Iowans expect, and he edged out John McCain for third place in the Iowa caucuses by just three tenths of a percentage point despite spending much more time than McCain stumping in the Hawkeye State (McCain focused on New Hampshire, where he won). He made almost no effort in the New Hampshire and Michigan primaries, where he got less than 2 percent and less than 4 percent of the vote, respectively…

Perhaps something will change the dynamics of the race in the remaining hours before South Carolina Republicans go to the polls tomorrow, and Thompson will catch a break. But at the moment, his prospects don’t appear to give fans of smaller government any reason to abandon the pessimism that has by now become all too familiar.

Re: how poorly run Fred’s campaign is/was, be sure to see this Mark Steyn item at the Corner if you missed it last night. Has the time come, ‘Heads? If the polls hold and Fred finishes fourth with less than half of McCain’s vote, Romney’s going to be your guy anyway come Sunday morning. Why not vote strategically tomorrow?

I offer you this to remember the man by. Meanwhile, here’s the state of conservatism in 2008: A RINO touting the kind words of another RINO in, of all places, South Carolina. Between them they’ve got 50% of the vote. Good lord.

Don’t worry. I’m right here, freezing my bee-honky off in south Texas, listening to it rain, in an 85 year old house near the bay. I promise, I’m not going ANYWHERE.

It’s people like you that make me bald. I’m in no mood to argue with you about Huck at the moment because I’m trying to stay warm. That problem aside, your previous posts have been all about abortion, which is a topic that frankly bores me to death. I’m soooo over it. Huck runs on identity politics and speaks to a very select group of conservatives, a group that I’m not a part of anymore. I frankly could care less about what a woman chooses to do with her pregnancy. It’s up to her. I just don’t want my tax dollars supporting it. There. Said it. Moving on now.

Huck’s not the guy;

The only thing you need to do to turn yourself off on Huck is look at a few other posts here on HA. It’s enough to turn your stomach.

Nixon was right, Fred’s is not the sharpest tool in the box and his campaign is direct evidence of this.

No problem and since you are voting for Fred, it doesn’t really matter what you call us here in the south. I love you man!

By the way, looks like temps will be in the upper 30’s here in SC when the snow hits, so the roads should stay clear. When the temp is like that the snow falls pre-shoveled. Coats the grass nicely, but the roads and driveways stay nice and clean. Should be a pretty day here in SC.

In the last couple of weeks there has been a real surge on the ground for Fred. I guess we will know long before this time tomorrow if the ground swell holds out for him. I would be really shocked if McCain does as well as the polls claim. Lindsey Lou is not well liked in these parts nor is McCain, put them together and a lot of us hicks start spitting toe–backie juice!!! even if we don’t dip or chew or run with those who do!! apacalyps,

A vote for Fred is a vote to kill little babies. Abortion is murder and Thompson would allow people in each state to decide their own abortion laws.

apacalyps on January 18, 2008 at 10:54 PM

From an interview with John Hawkins of Right Wing News:

John Hawkins: Switching gears again, do you think we should overturn Roe v. Wade?

Mike Huckabee: It would please me because I think Roe v. Wade is based on a real stretch of Constitutional application — that somehow there is a greater privacy issue in the abortion concern — than there is a human life issue — and that the federal government should be making that decision as opposed to states making that decision.

So, I’ve never felt that it was a legitimate manner in which to address this and, first of all, it should be left to the states, the 10th Amendment, but secondly, to somehow believe that the taking of an innocent, unborn human life is about privacy and not about that unborn life is ludicrous.

I’m prolife and I’m not voting for Huck.

Also:

From November 2007 href=”http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2007/11/thompson-accuse.html”>Huckabee Accused of Reversal on Life Amendment:

Thompson aide Karen Hanretty e-mailed members of the press a Washington Times newspaper clip from Feb. 12, 1995, in which Huckabee, who was lieutenant governor of Arkansas at the time, is quoted saying “that’s exactly what we have looked for” after a description of a proposed platform revision which would have replaced the Human Life Amendment with “a statement saying the issue should be left up to the individual states legislatures to deal with as each sees fit.”

“‘That’s exactly what we have looked for, and if it’s left up to the states, more of them are going to put some restrictions on abortion,’ Arkansas Lt. Gov. Mike Huckabee said in an interview after appearing on a conference panel yesterday,” reads the Washington Times story from 1995.

Asked by ABC News’ Kevin Chupka on Monday if he favored dropping the federal Human Life Amendment from the GOP platform in 1995, Huckabee did not provide a simple “yes” or “no” answer.

“In ‘95-’96 there was a lot of talk in the Republican Party nationally about getting rid of that plank in the platform,” said Huckabee, referring to the provision calling for a Human Life Amendment. “I’ve never wanted us to do that but when the discussion came ‘what would be the worst,’ well, the worst would be having nothing pro-life in the platform.”

“It’s a matter,” Huckabee added, “of getting done whatever you can get done and moving the ball as far as you can move it.”

What has gotten into you people?

This should disqualify Fraud Thompson from running for the Presidency. He worked on behalf of the Libyan terrorists who blew Pan Am flight 103 out of the sky over Lockerbie Scotland. Lobbying on behalf of abortion on demand is one thing – advocating for terrorists is another. It is completely unacceptable.

Now, do any of you understand the above??

Rudy Giuliani is a liberal with some conservative tendencies. He vehemently supports abortion and told us this. And no matter what he says it doesn’t change that abortion is murdering little babies. Plus, he’s for same gay marriage. This is completely unacceptable.

Okay… do you get what I just said. Is it registering?

Romney, he advocated governmental recognition of homosexual adoption rights, domestic partnerships and homosexual civil unions. He opposed the Boy Scouts’ policy prohibiting homosexuals from serving as scoutmasters and prevented the organization from participating publicly in the 2002 Olympics. And he lies like in this 30 second ad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhOSsix3XEk

Does any of this matter to you???

McCain – If you agree with the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill that would legalize 20 million illegal aliens, then you should vote for John McCain. If you agree with McCain’s statement that Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton do not get enough credit for what they did in foreign policy, then you should vote for John McCain. (That is McCain’s “foreign policy experience” – he praised the foreign policy of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton during the Iowa presidential debate in 2000.)

None of you mention any of this all you do is bash the most conservative one of the bunch, Mike Huckabee. The hypocrisy is astouonding.

3. Mitt Romney 16

4. Fred Thompson 16

Interestingly enough, When they break it into a chart saying where the numbers are coming from you get this:

*****

Romney as second choice takes from:

McCain supporters 24%

Huckabee supporters 20%

Thompson supporters 34%

*****

McCain as second choice takes from:

Huckabee supporters 58%

Romney supporters 40

Thompson supporters 30

*****

Huck as second choice takes from:

McCain supporters 55%

Romney supporters 20

Thompson supporters 24%

*****

Thompson as second choice takes from:

McCain supporters 10%

Huckabee supporters 13

Romney supporters 26

So it would appear that the Huck and Mc supporters are much more closely aligned than any of the other candidates in the minds of their supporters.

Mr. 76,

If changing one’s position on an issue is a disqualifier, you have no one to vote for. Fred changed from pro-choice to pro-life. Giuliani has changed svereal positions, including immigration, Romney has changed most of his positions and even McCain says he now see the light on immigration. I know, I know, Huckabee’s change was quite recent. But that would mean it is less cynical because his change wasn’t planned out months or even years earlier. Huckabee has laid out a good, solid immigration plan which is as conservative and tough as any of the front runner’s plans. You obviously have the right to not believe him. I just wanted to remind you to consider holding all these candidates equally accountable for their flip-flopping because they are all guilty. Some more and some less so.

I hope you keep that in mind.

apacalyps on January 19, 2008 at 12:08 AM

That doesn’t suprise me. After all Huck’s campaign manager said, “We like McCain” and Mac is running an ad of video of Huck’s praise. Before the race began they were pretty close ideologically.

What has been interesting to me, is that I don’t think I’ve ever seen such dramatic chance in the middle of a campaign before. Huck was a 2nd tier guy with non-conservative views, and his charisma got him a lot of attention and his natural base with social cons catapulted him into a win in Iowa and in the 1st tier. Now that the MSM is really seeing him for the “first” time, he has been able to recast almost all his issues in a very conservative mold. It’s amazing, I’ve never seen such a move like that within a campaign before…at least preceding a general.

Spirit of 1776 on January 19, 2008 at 12:10 AM

Although according to every other pollster it is Huckabee in the lead and at very minimum tied.

Repeat after me….agenda!

HaraldHardrada on January 19, 2008 at 12:11 AM

It could be that forces outside the control of politicians will be setting the agenda next week. the stock market is on the verge of the worse crash in history and if our leaders continue to do nothing it will only continue its slide.. So when every loses their life savings I think the entire discussion we had would be moot.

His changes are also more extreme, going from “not giving illegals free education is against my soul” to “seal the borders. Deport all illegals” and from “smoking is an evil pox on humanity and it should be banned” to “no smoking bans ever” to “the government should be able to ban anything indecent” in the span of what, 3 days?

Seriously ArmageddonHuck, do you take us for fools?

— INC on January 18, 2008 at 11:35 PM

I would look at it this way, “I’m NOT voting for Huckabee BECAUSE I am pro life.” Please refer to who got the NRLC endorsement, as well as numerous state-wide Right to Life organizations. Getting originalist judges to overturn Roe will save the unborn. A fairy tale about amendments will only do harm.

Certainly I’m willing to do that. But Huck has a lack of credibility that others do not, which is compounded by the fact he moved on so many issues. Romney (not shilling for him), for example, has been endorsed by the man who knows more about immigration than anybody in the nation! (Which doesn’t mean he has anti-evangelical hate – I really wish you would drop that canard here). McCain hasn’t changed his position at all except to say that he has heard the people and he will enforce the law and “build the d*mn fence” (Consider Mat 21:28-31). I won’t go through the others because I don’t want to dig for links.

I get tired of trying to explain to people that abortion is murder, so there ya go. My hope though is that one day you change your mind on this.

The only thing you need to do to turn yourself off on Huck is look at a few other posts here on HA. It’s enough to turn your stomach.

People have been bashing Huck, first, not the other way around. Huckabee, after taking this crap for weeks, hits back and now out comes all the outrage.

Probably because when Romney “attacks” he points out Huck’s own scattered record on every issue known to man, and when Huck attacks he plays up the stupid Baptist minister humble servant of the Lord shtick as he throws in a snide remark about Mormonism’s supposed beliefs, despite the fact he’s given speeches on it before.

Huck is basically the living embodiment of every single shyster televangelist stereotype in existence.
