Should Fred’s supporters abandon him tomorrow for … Huckabee?

posted at 8:30 pm on January 18, 2008 by Allahpundit

T-minus 24 hours and counting until, in all likelihood, his political career’s over. I can’t resist one last poke at the Fredhead beehive for old time’s sake.

The argument comes from Patrick Ruffini: Since Huckabee probably doesn’t have the money or organization to run the table on Super Ultra Mega Tuesday but McCain does, shouldn’t South Carolina’s Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson supporters defect tomorrow and vote for Huck to blunt Mac’s momentum heading into Florida? That’s an easy yes in the first two cases but in Fred’s case it would mean the end. Has the time come to take Ol’ Yeller out back? Ruffini says … yes:

If you’re a Romney or a Rudy guy, this is a relative no-brainer. This will be tougher for FredHeads, since their guy has made a stand in the state. But with less than 24 hours to go, and Fred running no better than a weak third, it is probably time to face facts. It’s too bad, because conservatives deserve Fred Thompson as a choice, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening.

John Tabin at Reason likewise fears the Reaper:

Alas, Thompson has hardly taken the race by storm. Glenn Reynolds wrote last month that he might have joined Volokh et al. in endorsing Thompson if he hadn’t observed how poorly Thompson’s campaign is run behind the scenes. That poorly run campaign has yielded poor results. Thompson’s low-key affect and introverted personality made him ill-suited to the hands-on retail politicking that Iowans expect, and he edged out John McCain for third place in the Iowa caucuses by just three tenths of a percentage point despite spending much more time than McCain stumping in the Hawkeye State (McCain focused on New Hampshire, where he won). He made almost no effort in the New Hampshire and Michigan primaries, where he got less than 2 percent and less than 4 percent of the vote, respectively…

Perhaps something will change the dynamics of the race in the remaining hours before South Carolina Republicans go to the polls tomorrow, and Thompson will catch a break. But at the moment, his prospects don’t appear to give fans of smaller government any reason to abandon the pessimism that has by now become all too familiar.

Re: how poorly run Fred’s campaign is/was, be sure to see this Mark Steyn item at the Corner if you missed it last night. Has the time come, ‘Heads? If the polls hold and Fred finishes fourth with less than half of McCain’s vote, Romney’s going to be your guy anyway come Sunday morning. Why not vote strategically tomorrow?

I offer you this to remember the man by. Meanwhile, here’s the state of conservatism in 2008: A RINO touting the kind words of another RINO in, of all places, South Carolina. Between them they’ve got 50% of the vote. Good lord.

By denying one their right to speak denies everyone else their right to hear it even if it is offensive.

It wasn’t retarded, it was straight out of the left-wing class envy playbook. And the same media that praised Clinton’s economy to the skies while screaming “Recession any minute now!” for the last five years will let him get away with it.

Huckabee is crying out for a good fisking, but nobody has that much spare time – we’re all employed.

Laura on January 18, 2008 at 10:05 PM

Haha, my bad Laura… But in my defense, I was under the impression that “retarded” and “left-wing” were synonyms.

As for the recession thing… what’s really annoying is Bush inherited the Clinton/Gore recession, dealt with 9/11, New Orleans, 2 wars, high gas prices, and the economy boomed in all sectors, and even saw record tax revenues under lower tax rates (a concept lost on libs). NOW, there are troubles, and a recession is possible… though if you were to look at the media coverage, you’d think we’d never had a recession before. But what’s really annoying is that the media screamed “recession!” all through the booming economy, and NOW, with their self fulfilling prophecy, they’re going to play the “told ya so” game.

“They were up there freezing themselves in New Hampshire and I was down here talking to South Carolinians. Now who’s smart enough to be President?”

That was here on Hotair, Nine days ago, after Fred got whipped in NH. Apparently he didn’t value those handful of people who froze themselves for him.

This guys premise is that instead of Federalist Fred, we vote for someone who wants to change the constitution to be in line with HIS Religious Principals? Huck is pretty much the Anti Fred… but to “win” this guy wants people to supprt him… basicly LIE with their vote?

One MAJOR problem with American politics… people treat it as a game to win… instead of telling people to vote their conscience…

I will not even address the softball lob of the First Amendment here. MadCon did a good job of that.

Look. We all have fun. We all get cranky. We all get happy, we all get pissed. That’s the dynamics of a community like this. We fight for what we believe. We rip AP when he gets under our skin, we applaud when he doesn’t.

But it seems there is always someone… someone… that f*cks it up for everyone else. And then the rules get changed to help the poor guy on the short bus. Gotta keep a level playing field, right?

This used to be such an awesome site. Even when I got slapped down (usually, deservedly so), I still felt a certain civility about it.

JetBoy on January 18, 2008 at 10:45 PM

Ruffini was a big time GW Bush mouthpiece. It’s just so strange that he would see McCain as the huge threat to the GOP and nation but not mind Huckabee so much.

I’m not a McCain supporter, but the McCain derangement syndrome really puzzles me.

My husband told me he’s heard lots of disgust about the McC DS over in the sandbox. They aren’t clamoring for him to be POTUS, but there is lots of grumbling about how McCain’s being demonized by some in the GOP.

Their primary characteristic is astounding stupidity.

Fred can’t hit above second. That’s his best shot. He’s willing to squander the support of people in states he doesn’t seem worthy. All of these states thus far happen to be in his out-group, the north. Now he’s buttering up the old “ya know Tennessee is a neigbor of SC and” rhetoric. I have no problem if he’s a Southophile, but it doesn’t stop him from being a hick.

As a matter of fact I’m surprised the Fredheads haven’t characterized Wyoming as an evil liberal haven for voting Romney over Thompson. I guess we should just add Wyoming to Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan, and soon South Carolina as states whose entire populations simply do not get conservatism.

Passion is fine as long as it does not lead to generalizations of groups of people, of which there are many here. Passion has a place in civil discourse, as long as it does not turn to suggestion of the inferiority of those with whom you are discussing issues. Once it does, discourse is no longer civil.

However, as I said, those borders and limits are set by the owners of the site. I am simply giving basic bylines for proper conversation.

We spend three quarters of our time fighting off a few trolls that I could count on the fingers of one hand. Honestly.

wccawa on January 18, 2008 at 11:07 PM

Where are you from?

TheSitRep on January 18, 2008 at 11:02 PM

I’m from the Communist Motherland of Massachusettstan. I get the quadruple delight, having Cadillac Patrick as governor (now with more embryonic stem cell research, casino gambling, homosexuality, and abortion), Barkey Frank as rep (he runs unopposed), and of course the traitor and vehicular homicidal maniacs as my Senators. Needless to say, I don’t even bother contacting my representatives.

Incidentely I am not related to Uncle Ted, but hopefully one day when I’m old enough to run for office, I can hoodwink enough Mass. residents with the slogan “A Kennedy you can trust.” I will have blue AND red signs, just to add to the confusion.

BKennedy on January 18, 2008 at 11:07 PM

I’m calling for a ban.

Vote?

I vote no. BKennedy may have one major strike against him (He’s a Massho…er…resident of Massachusetts), but he hasn’t been particularly out of line on these threads.

I just received my Arizona vote-by-mail ballot today. There are 24 GOP candidates for POTUS!

So, regardless what happens in NC, I’m voting for Fred in AZ, and when the election comes around in November, I’m writing in Fred Dalton Thompson.

No more compromises. I’ve had enough.

doubleplusundead on January 18, 2008 at 11:17 PM

But seriously, Fred has a lot of problems, but suggesting someone vote for Huckabee is low. I think AP is just trying to punish the Fredheads. I was a Paul supporter, now I am just somebody who will vote for Paul until at least he tells the truth but I feel no reason to rub in Fred’s recent losses to Paul in Michigan and New Hampshire. Granted he beat Paul in Iowa but Huckabee won there so what do they know. But I find this suggestion of voting for Huckabee to be worse than waterboarding. How could any Conservative Christian KNOWINGLY vote for a lying liberal from Arkansas who practices dirty politics while exploiting Christ? Think John Goodman in “O Brother Where Art Thou”.

You want a good litmus test for Conservatives, don’t vote for anybody who has ever been in Hagee’s “church”. That list includes McCain, Huckabee, and Newt Gingrich.

JetBoy on January 18, 2008 at 11:19 PM

And you like Huck because????

pullingmyhairout on January 18, 2008 at 11:06 PM

-Abolish the IRS and institute the Fair Tax.
-Failing that, he wants to cut taxes and cut spending.
-He has taken the no new tax pledge.
-He wants to stay in Iraq until the job is done and we are successful.
-He wants to stay on offense on the war on terror.
-He is committed to denting Iran nuclear weapons.
-He wants to protect the sanctity of unborn life.
-He wants to protect traditional marriage.
-He has introduced a plan to secure the border without amnesty.
-He wants to change th health care system to a more preventive focused one and opposes government controlled universal health care.

Which of those are so bad? Which do you want to debate?

Those are not religious issues, they are conservative issues. Clearly, Huckabee is a man who projects his faith is a big part of who he is. So? He is running on innovative approaches to governing and Conservative principles. To say he is too religious is to basically say say you can be a man of faith as long as you shut-up and keep it hidden.

Oh, and PS, don’t pull your hair out. Oww. Ouch.

apacalyps on January 18, 2008 at 11:19 PM

Oh, Gawd… now the Paulbots show up.

I am SO out of here tonight. I wish you all the best. I really do.

Prediction? 370 more comments of utter tripe. AP is happy with the traffic, everyone else gets an aneurism.
