Should Fred’s supporters abandon him tomorrow for … Huckabee?

T-minus 24 hours and counting until, in all likelihood, his political career’s over. I can’t resist one last poke at the Fredhead beehive for old time’s sake.
The argument comes from Patrick Ruffini: Since Huckabee probably doesn’t have the money or organization to run the table on Super Ultra Mega Tuesday but McCain does, shouldn’t South Carolina’s Romney, Giuliani, and Thompson supporters defect tomorrow and vote for Huck to blunt Mac’s momentum heading into Florida? That’s an easy yes in the first two cases but in Fred’s case it would mean the end. Has the time come to take Ol’ Yeller out back? Ruffini says … yes:
If you’re a Romney or a Rudy guy, this is a relative no-brainer. This will be tougher for FredHeads, since their guy has made a stand in the state. But with less than 24 hours to go, and Fred running no better than a weak third, it is probably time to face facts. It’s too bad, because conservatives deserve Fred Thompson as a choice, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening.
John Tabin at Reason likewise fears the Reaper:
Alas, Thompson has hardly taken the race by storm. Glenn Reynolds wrote last month that he might have joined Volokh et al. in endorsing Thompson if he hadn’t observed how poorly Thompson’s campaign is run behind the scenes. That poorly run campaign has yielded poor results. Thompson’s low-key affect and introverted personality made him ill-suited to the hands-on retail politicking that Iowans expect, and he edged out John McCain for third place in the Iowa caucuses by just three tenths of a percentage point despite spending much more time than McCain stumping in the Hawkeye State (McCain focused on New Hampshire, where he won). He made almost no effort in the New Hampshire and Michigan primaries, where he got less than 2 percent and less than 4 percent of the vote, respectively…
Perhaps something will change the dynamics of the race in the remaining hours before South Carolina Republicans go to the polls tomorrow, and Thompson will catch a break. But at the moment, his prospects don’t appear to give fans of smaller government any reason to abandon the pessimism that has by now become all too familiar.
Re: how poorly run Fred’s campaign is/was, be sure to see this Mark Steyn item at the Corner if you missed it last night. Has the time come, ‘Heads? If the polls hold and Fred finishes fourth with less than half of McCain’s vote, Romney’s going to be your guy anyway come Sunday morning. Why not vote strategically tomorrow?
I offer you this to remember the man by. Meanwhile, here’s the state of conservatism in 2008: A RINO touting the kind words of another RINO in, of all places, South Carolina. Between them they’ve got 50% of the vote. Good lord.

Um, no.
MadisonConservative on January 18, 2008 at 8:34 PM
That wasn’t kind. But neither am I, so I can’t complain. If Fred does go south, literally (and you make a compelling case, as you have from day 1, that he will), then Romney get’s Fred’s votes, including mine. That’s my guess at least. We’ll see when the rest of the ‘Fredhead swarm’ shows up, eh?
AUINSC on January 18, 2008 at 8:36 PM
That Huckabee ever gets that many votes in the first place proves that most primary voters aren’t smart enough for that sort of forward-looking strategery. I kinda tired of the “vote for A to help B” suggestions.

Look at McCain
He’s such a pain
backstabbin’ the base

He acts real tough and he fought in war
but we’ve heard all of that rhetoric before
Wish he fought for borders as much as talked smack
wish he cared about America as much as Iraq.
Hear the dirge
he claims the surge
but McCain
we must purge.

This is a horrible question. Didn’t the NH Polls show Obama up by double digits???? How did that turn out. Fred is the only one moving up in the SC Poll and a win there will give him a swell in Flordia. Also, he does have some money on hand since his SC debate performance.
Keep hope alive for a true conservative in ‘08.

DannoJyd on January 18, 2008 at 8:44 PM
I think this is already factored into the poll numbers, to a large extent. Also, why would you expect the “RINO” Giuliani supporters to try to blunt McCain’s momentum? Many of us consider him a pretty good second choice, and would be happy is he’s the nominee.

No. In a brokered convention, Thompson is everyones second choice. He would most likely come out as the candidate for November.

I also can’t figure out why the push to get Fred out of the race is stronger than the push to get Ron Paul out of the race.
Laura on January 18, 2008 at 8:46 PM
Agreed. A strategic vote for Huck or McCain or Romney or whomever defeats the purpose of voting: backing what you want for the country. If Fredheads don’t vote for Fred, their strategic vote will appear as support for the moderate platform, not as a rejection of McCain’s moderation.

I agree with SoulGlo – voters should support their actual favorite candidate, until there is no way in hell that candidate can win. And four primaries in is a little soon to be singing that tune. After their guy is out, they should then support the viable candidate they actually prefer. And, fwiw, I don’t see a huge exodus of Fred-leaners going to Romney, based on my discussions. I’d guess if anything more will go to McCain, with a few to Rudy as well. And these are people who hate the McCain/Bush amnesty plan.

TheSitRep on January 18, 2008 at 8:53 PM
That link is ridiculous. Rush is usually pretty good, but I got lost tying to figure out the source of Rush’s optimism. Basically, he heard it from some guy who talked to some people who said that somebody told them that there was a lot of “grassroots support” for Fred and that he had “finally arrived”, whatever those vague terms might mean. It’s just one last bit of hype for a campaign that has laid it’s foundation on such unreasonably lofty expectations. Do you really expect the polls to be 15-20 points off?

PolitiNOOB on January 18, 2008 at 9:01 PM
I want to agree, because Fred! would have to win (not just place) in SC to go on. He didn’t decide he was really interested in running this campaign until the end of the NH primary vote, which was too late. Sadly, even if he was to win SC… what does that mean? I don’t know if that is going to generate nearly enough momentum to make him a viable candidate. It does kinda seem like old yeller time. BUT, I also think the wind in McCain and Huck’s sails will disappear on its own soon, so I wonder if sacrificing the old man is really necessary? Are they really gaining a lot of widespread support? I still feel like it’s Romney’s race to lose. Not staying on top of the polls, just a gut I’ve had for a while (even though LAST year I predicted we’d have Giuliani vs. Hillary in the end, and I still kinda want that to be the case, because I like being right).
Then again, why delay the inevitable? And why not at least get some use out of teh Fred!? I think Romney is probably our guy, so let’s just do what needs to be done to take out the libs (McCain and Huck), then let Romney roll along and see if Rudy makes any waves with FL, etc.

Let’s hope & pray Fred has a good & proper showing tomorrow. Putting the country in the hands of the wholly evil Clintons, AGAIN, or a black racist muslim, or a RINO war hero democ-rat, or a huckleberry hound/finn preacher guy just doesn’t make sense. Of course dumb George didn’t cut it a 100% either, but the lesser evil came into play. Why does a candidate have to give up without giving the rest of the country a chance to vote in the primaries? I mean couldn’t Fred last till ’super tuesday’ at least, before he’s canned?

Huck’s going to collapse under the weight of his own stupidity. A few more gaffes like this Confederate battle flag nonsense and even the media won’t be able to sweep it under the rug.
So when he goes, as he inevitably will, where will his supporters go? Not Rudy, with his views on abortion. Not McCain, with Shamnesty. Some to Romney, but more to Fred.
Fred is finally getting it in gear, and now is not the time to quit.
Laura on January 18, 2008 at 9:07 PM
Ignoring the fact that Giuliani hasn’t done better than fourth place in a single primary or caucus as of yet shows just how delusional you are.
You’re also insulting to compare hardcore conservatives to a group who includes neo-nazis, 9-11 truthers, holocaust deniers, and secessionists.
MadisonConservative on January 18, 2008 at 9:07 PM
Actually, most Giuliani supporters that I know are used to getting screwed by the Republican Party, and are prepared to deal with his exit if/when it happens. Fred supporters on this site are so emotionally invested in their candidate, and their position as the only “true conservatives” in the party, that they start to sound like the Paulnuts after a while.
Big S on January 18, 2008 at 9:08 PM
Don’t know what gets into Ruffini sometimes. The notion that any meaningful number of SC Fred or Mitt or other supporters would vote Huck strategically is so obviously inane, that I have to think it was offered up as much for the sake of inspiring horse race speculation from a different perspective. Of course, if it was stated that way – i.e., what you might want to pull for if you’ve given up on your candidate winning – it would attract less interest.
CK MacLeod on January 18, 2008 at 9:08 PM
So he didn’t move his campaign staff to South Carolina? He didn’t actually say that’s where he wanted to make his stand?

Why be serious about the election at all? Nothing to lose in this race. Regardless of who you select – either democrat or republican, minus Thompson or Paul – you are going to get some big new shiny expensive program(s). And now would be a good time to learn Spanish as the official language of the US – no really. My company has already picked up three interpreters.
I think we should vote for who we want and let the chips fall as they may. This is a democracy after all, isn’t it? Since we are moving more to the left as a party (republican), I see a one party system in the near future – republicans and democrats are all starting to blur together. Conservatism is dead. Long live the nanny state. You get what you pay for.

That Steyn post was damning. If true then Fred deserves to lose. If Fred ran a general election campaign as poorly as he’s run the primary then HRC or BHO would win the White House by a comfortable margin, with a ‘mandate for change’.
We need the strongest possible candidate for the general election. If the Democrats win, I want them to win by the smallest possible margin (ideally with less than 50% of the popular vote just so I can enjoy the poetic justice). It will be difficult to stomach a Democratic ‘landslide’. The stakes are too high. We need a candidate who will work hard, campaign hard and raise piles of money.

2.) Fred drops out and tells his supporters in Florida to vote McCain.
I’m laughing just thinking about it.
Big S on January 18, 2008 at 9:15 PM
It’s not our position. It’s a fact. Every candidate other than Fred or Hunter has more liberal positions on issues than they do.
Abortion: Thompson proposes to push to allow states to outlaw it.
Gun Control: Thompson is against all restrictions on the second amendment.
Amnesty: Thompson is against all amnesty measures and in favor of full enforcement of current laws.
Health care: Thompson is against government-subsidized health care.
Every other candidate other than Hunter holds the opposite position on one or more of these issues. That’s not something that needs emotional investment. Why is that so distasteful to you? Is it because you hate the fact that you have to settle? Well, you don’t have to, if you throw your support behind the person with the most conservative positions in the race for the nomination.
MadisonConservative on January 18, 2008 at 9:16 PM

When pulling the lever for your candidate has the direct effect of making McCain–a NON-conservative–a nearly unstoppable force for nomination, your conviction has transformed into mania.

Funny Big A….. “stoking the hive for old times sake!”
But if Mitt’s your guy come Sunday… then why not weaken both McCain and Huck by voting for Mitt?
That way, it would give both McCain and Huck some false hope, upon which they would continue to stumble along until Florida and continue to make total fools of themselves.
Then both McCain and Huck would be finished for an eternity.
However, if you give Huck (undeserved) votes it might give him enough hope to come back another day. Argh!
Besides with that ad so clearly demonstrating what we have feared, ie., a vote for Huck is a vote for McCain and vice versa, we can’t take any chances.

I think Fred knows what the hell he is doing.
He really puts all the other candidates to pure shame in every possible way.

Sadly, I’m not joking. While the “confederate flag” thing may be a non-issue, what the hell kind of dodge is it to jump to unemployment, ESPECIALLY WHEN UNEMPLOYMENT IS INCREDIBLY LOW!!! That was classic liberal BS. I mean, at least say “health care”, but unemployment? Didn’t we just barely creep back to 5% unemployment recently? Sorry Governor, but that’s virtually full employment (especially when you factor in all the people who REFUSE to work).

It’s time to stop Hillary. Let’s all switch parties and vote for Barack.
