Video: Mitt gets testy with AP reporter over lobbyist accusations

posted at 3:55 pm on January 17, 2008 by Allahpundit

As testy as Mitt’s capable of getting, that is. The real confrontation comes towards the end, when one of his spokesmen and then a passerby get up in the reporter’s face. The charge is that Romney, the self-styled candidate of vacuous “change”, is letting his campaign be run by a guy who not only served as political director in the George H.W. Bush administration but is known to some as a “mega-lobbyist”, whose firm raised more than $21 million in fees in 2006 alone. True? Strictly speaking, no. Ron Kaufman appears to have no formal role with the campaign, although he’s mentioned in this Fox News story as a member of Mitt’s “inner circle” and is frequently described as a “senior advisor” in other news reports. So, to the 1% or less of Republicans who deem this an unpardonable, disqualifying sin, there you go.

Ed Rollins, Huck’s campaign manager, attacked Kaufman last month on Hardball for being an atheist so you can imagine where my sympathies lie. Click the image to watch.

mitt-kaufman.jpg

Update (Bryan): My two cents while I’m working on tomorrow’s Jihad Watch. No candidate will lose points with voters by taking on a reporter, and double that on the GOP side. Remember George H. W. Bush’s famous fisticuffs with Dan Rather in 1988, which was seen at the time as the end of his wimp problem. Fight with an annoying reporter, go up in the polls. Add that the reporter in this case has a history of bias and you have the makings of a win for Romney. That the reporter acts like an unprofessional clod by lounging on the floor during the grilling is just a bonus.

And in this case, as Allah outlines above, Mitt is right on the facts.

Who was the dip on the floor with his laptop?

He was really grasping at straws there, and he was being a dick while doing so.

It looks like everybody is getting a little raw from the campaign trail. Can a Dean scream be far ahead?

Sharpies are 20% off?! Woo-hoo!

That Glenn, what an asshole.

CABE on January 17, 2008 at 4:02 PM

The reporter was being a bit unprofessional. Interrupting a candidate while he’s making a statement or answering a question is rude.

Also, someone get that man a folding chair.

Slublog on January 17, 2008 at 4:03 PM

The best part is the little Southern lady at the end who says, “I’m not with the campaign. I’m just standin’ by, but I think you were rude and ugly.”

Ha.

marykatharine on January 17, 2008 at 4:03 PM

This is a good sign that Mitt will be the next POTUS if the press is already treating him with the same disrespect they show GWB.

P.S. to you arousal seekers: Mitt looks gooooood today.

Brat on January 17, 2008 at 4:03 PM

I guess Mitt will only have to keep his promises to Michigan and Detroit.. for ALL those jobs..

The lady at the end put the icing on the cake.

Jared_MA on January 17, 2008 at 4:06 PM

The problem is the educational system. This guy is supposed to be a “reporter” (whatever that means). Was he argumentative?

Calling someone a liar to his face, and then again when they give specifics is argumentative.

This reporter could not possibly know anything that would refute Romney. He seems to have decided that knowing a “lobbyist”, or having ones number in their Blackberry is enough.

Frankly it is a shame that such people are encouraged to be so ignorant and belligerent. I’d like to see him be as annoying with Obama, Clinton or Edward. It might be interesting to see them get angry.

You are familar, I’m sure, with the fact that the link posted here on that subject tracked to Redstate which apparently took the excerpt from ABC radio, without the context of it’s origin form at CNN Political Ticket. It was a joking reference to the ability to win Michigan. Which, by the way, was a promise he fulfilled.

Anyone who takes these punk “journalists” down is on my “A” list for a few days.
Journalists think they can run around and state whatever they feel like, or “trap” the candidates into putting on hats, or answering ridiculous questions.
I want the leader of my country not taking any sh*t from some squirrel *ss, punk, twinkie eating nobody, trying to trick or trap them. Too fat and lazy to stand and ask a question properly.
Now the little twerp will go back and massage his words and prove that some “lobbyist” guy sat at one meeting with Mitt…Mitt should have kicked him in his teeth.
Hey, all of the candidates know lobbyists stupid…that’s a lobbyists job.
Good grief, defending Mitt?

right2bright on January 17, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Now the press is going to look for evidence of Romney’s temper. Clinton and McCain have that baggage, and the MSM knows/ignores it.

Expect them to interview employees for a quote of Romney yelling at them or even (can you imagine) cursing.

Agrippa2k on January 17, 2008 at 4:17 PM

Your unbiased, professional media at work. Not happy to report the story when they don’t like you, they have to become part of the story. Fat media geek. I’d like to take that air bud he’s fiddling with in his ear and shove it up his fat…

Glen Johnson had his 8 minutes of fame after the “Hostage Crisis” but apparently decided he needed to do something else.

So lets take a look at what Mr. Johnson has had to say before:

When the hostages had been released and their alleged captor arrested, a regal-looking Hillary Rodham Clinton strolled out of her Washington home, the picture of calm in the face of crisis.

…the Democratic presidential contender can face disorder in a most orderly manner.

It was a vintage example of a candidate taking a negative and turning it into a positive. And coming just six weeks before the presidential voting begins, the timing could hardly have been more beneficial to someone hoping to stave off a loss in the Iowa caucuses and secure a win in the New Hampshire primary.

The aides said Clinton immediately canceled her trip and began working the phones. She later told reporters she had New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch, a fellow Democrat, on the phone in eight minutes.

At the same time, the woman striving to move from former first lady to the first female president was eager to convey that she knew the traditional lines of command and control in a crisis, even if the events inside the storefront on North Main Street were far short of a world calamity.

Along with taking charge while giving the professionals free rein, Clinton offered up a third dimension to her crisis character: humanity. She said she felt “grave concern” when she first heard the news of the hostage-taking.

It was a thawing moment for a stoic figure who once snapped that she opted for professional life instead of staying home to bake cookies.

She buttressed it with one final message. Clinton sought to use the sad moment as a national teaching opportunity, another skill often employed by presidents.

Good thing the AP determined he should take his writing skills to the other side for awhile.

Willard Romney: “Even though I was pro abortion at the time I governed as the most pro life governor in the USA”!

Well, I mean besides forcing “universal health care” on my state and reducing the co pay for abortions to $50 that is.

HaraldHardrada on January 17, 2008 at 4:26 PM

Is there a particular reason why we have presumed conservatives calling Mitt by the name “Willard,” a derogatory term that originated with the moonbats? Colorful criticism is one thing, but I find it odd that a con would co-opt the left’s nomenclature…

Vizzini on January 17, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Well, I mean besides forcing “universal health care” on my state and reducing the co pay for abortions to $50 that is.

HaraldHardrada on January 17, 2008 at 4:26 PM

Look Huckatroll, maybe before you try your shtick you should remember some of us do actually live in Massachusetts. The co-pay law was in effect before Romney was even in office, and he had to abide by it whether he liked it or not.

You’d probably know that if you actually lived here, instead of being just another scribe to Huck’s Pharisee.

BKennedy on January 17, 2008 at 4:31 PM

Why is the dork sitting on the floor with his laptop?

Because he can’t write like a real reporter, he has to tap tap tap on his laptop in order to take notes.

He just got his master’s degree in Confrontational Journalism and couldn’t wait to confront a Republican.

Brat on January 17, 2008 at 4:34 PM

If there had not been a video of the exchange does anybody question how it would have appeared in print? Something like Romney dodges questions about ties to lobbyist? or even Romney excludes key team members from briefing.
The old print media can get by with giving a persons answer to a question while paraphrasing the question, if indeed a question was even asked.
And they wonder why Americans distrust the news industry so much?

Just A Grunt on January 17, 2008 at 4:34 PM

The real question is:

Would this AP reporter talk the same way to Hillary Clinton or Barack?

Would ANY MSM reporter have the same tone with ANY democrat?

HaraldHardrada on January 17, 2008 at 4:38 PM

Sleeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaazeball reporters.

I’d agree with the man on the tape that it was unprofessional, but I’m not sure anymore how “professional” journalists are any different than opinion writers and and bloggers. But I will say that that would be bad form even in the blogging world.

As a side note, Nora McDonald on MSNBC noted that McCain’s campaign is actually run by a bona fide lobbyist, fwiw.

Brat on January 17, 2008 at 5:00 PM

stlpatriot on January 17, 2008 at 4:49 PM

Yep. But I mean, what else are they going to say? They aren’t going to pick up anyone who really cares about nation security. They aren’t going to pick up anyone who really cares about fiscal conservatism. They aren’t going to pick up anyone who cares about small government principles. So to pick up anyone else’s supporters they have to pretend that they are the next best thing. They have a niche on compassionate conservatism, such as it is, and that’s a self-limiting market after the B43 presidency.

In contrast Fred and his supporters have tremendous common cause with other candidates on a variety of issues. Most specifically, Fred’s rallying cry is federalism and the Reagan coalition. No one listening to Fred could walk away thinking that Huck remotely understands or supports these ideas. A national smoking ban? An arrogant foreign policy? No, I have more respect for Fred supporters then to think they will be beguiled by the like of Huck’s campaign.

Buchanan compared him the other day to a football player going straight to the NFL skipping college. Meaning, he has had to learn things about campaigning that all the other Washington seasoned insiders already know by rote, before his talent really dominates the field. And his conclusion was that the rate of improvement by Romney makes him think he would be victorious in the general.

Kaufman is a senior strategist with the campaign who often travels with the governor and provides counsel before debates and other major events; in fact, Kaufman traveled with the motorcade in the run-up to the Iowa caucuses and was also in Michigan for the primary. He has been involved in Republican politics for decades and is now a lobbyist with the firm, Dutko Worldwide.

AND

It’s also worth noting that Barbara Comstock, another senior adviser, is a Washington lobbyist.

Actually, I am consistent. I praised McCain when he called the kid a creep. I praised Fred when he wouldn’t put on the hat.
The news org. think they run the country, they are just news people, and the quicker the candidates learn that, the more votes they will get.
No one, and I mean no real red blooded American, wants a president that is afraid of the press, that cozyies (sp) up to them to get a few votes or a good write up. We like a president that can give it back, that will slam someone when they get slammed. We like a little bit of the gun-slinger…leave the feel good to the dems, we want the do good on our side. And when you slam the press-weasels, you done good. The press, not the most respected occupation in the U.S.
Other words, a man with a little back-bone is part of a leaders make-up. And that was the first of Mitt’s back bone I’ve seen.

A light-hearted comment sends you off the deep end into rant #183906?

Maybe your life as a ‘prophet’ is wearing you down.

So, let me get this straight… Sicko didn’t pan out, so now Moore is going after Right Wing Office Supplies?

Glen Johnson’s polite (but incredibly biased) report on the incident:

Also, Drudgereport is linking to politico’s biased report of the event, and ABC’s video which omits the last part of the confrontation.
.
Here’s a good wrap up of Johnson’s biased attacks on Romney in his reports:

Geez Allah, I should just do this job for you ;)

Definitely separated at birth with Moore.

Wow, that Perspectives.com recap of Glen Johnson’s bias is quite something to behold. All that’s missing are some Photo-shopped pix to illustrate the faux scandal stories.

Mitt handled that really well. He got a bit flustered, but he kept his cool. I have to say, if it had been me the guy had called a liar (to my face in front of lots of cameras), I think I would’ve said something like, “You look like a really bad mix of Michael Moore and Dennis Nedry, and I really don’t care about your opinion of screwed up facts. Goodbye. Now, back to what I was saying…”

Good thing I’m not running for Prez, huh? ;0)

Glad I’m not the only one. All these boorish-gas-bag-pseudo journalist/documentarians look alike to me. They add so much to public discourse. Who needs higher learning when these professors of truth can enlighten us.

I agree with the sentiment. What sets me off with this guy is the lack of respect. Even if you disagree with someone’s positions, at least get off the ground and be a man. Don’t snipe with partisan attacks while hiding behind your “journalistic integrity.”

Cold Steel on January 17, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Awesome clip. You could tell Romney wanted to run over there and kick that guy to the moon. lol.

This is not the first time Mitt has had to deliver the SMACK DOWN to the press. He routinely challenged the press corps in Massachusetts and most often the Boston Globe idiots, Mitt would call them out on their bias quite frequently. It’ll be interesting to see how Mitt deals with the Washington Press, frankly I don’t think he’ll put up with as much crap as W has.

You go Mitt. This country needs a leader who will put smarmy little media creeps like that in their place. Forget Mitt, if I were there I would dragged his fat, arrogant ass out to the street and taught him some manners.

peacenprosperity on January 17, 2008 at 8:25 PM

Wonder how hothead McCain would have handled that situation.

EJDolbow on January 17, 2008 at 8:27 PM

Romney took a reporter to the woodshed while he was governor of Mass.

Thank you for the links jon. Mitt is clear and concise on how he deals with problem children in the press. The link concerning the MA press was good because it shows the charm of W, but with Mitt’s quick wit. Mitt seems to refine his delivery when attacked. He’s getting practice again since MI.

I don’t know for certain, but I guarantee he would have used the word “jerk” and the phrase “my friend”.
