Fred says the Bush admin “overlawyered” the DC gun case

It gets tough to blog about Fred. For the front page thumbnail do I choose a shot of red meat or a shot of Marblehead himself? Hard to lose either way, actually. And if I can find a messianic shot, well, I have to use that.
The Fred Thompson for President, South Carolina bus tour reached Spartanburg today, where the Law & Order TV star candidate fielded questions at Papa’s Breakfast Nook from Charlotte, N.C.’s WBT-AM radio talk show host Jeff Katz.
Asked his opinion of the Second Amendment and the Solicitor General’s request that the DC Circuit Court remand the appeal back to the trial court for “fact-finding”, the lawyer turned Senator from Tennessee said the Bush Administration was “overlawyering” and stated that he opposed remand and that the case should move forward to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Right on the money answer to a question that’s tailor-made and perfectly timed for the South Carolina primary. And a perfect way for Fred (and the other candidates, if they so choose) to distance themselves from the Bush administration without alienating conservatives or seeming to appease the left in any way.
It’s not the first time Fred has weighed on in Heller, so he can’t be accused of pandering. He’s saying what he actually believes.
The District argued, as many gun-control advocates do, that these words only guarantee a collective “right” to bear arms while serving the government. The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected this approach and instead adopted an “individual rights” view of the Second Amendment. The D.C. Circuit is far from alone. The Fifth Circuit and many leading legal scholars, including the self-acknowledged liberal Harvard law professor Laurence Tribe, have also come to adopt such an individual rights view.
I’ve always understood the Second Amendment to mean what it says – it guarantees a citizen the right to “keep and bear” firearms, and that’s why I’ve been supportive of the National Rifle Association’s efforts to have the DC law overturned.
By the way, Rep. Eric Cantor has a petition up at Save the Second.

Do you understand the concept of LCD. I was not referring to the entire population, just the idiots that Fred was trying to appeal to with this nonsense about the 2nd. Did you see that Fox focus group after the SC debate? I was not talking about the cutie in the front row that couldn’t stand Fred, I was talkin’ about the less attractive and intelligent yokels making up the peanut gallery.

South Carolina: McCain Way Up; Huckabee in Second; Mitt Third; Fred Struggling; Rudy Dead [Byron York]
A new poll from South Carolina shows a remarkable rise in support for John McCain, but with many Republicans still not having firmly decided how they will vote.
The latest Palmetto Poll, conducted by Clemson University between January 9 and 15, shows McCain in the lead with 29 percent – up from 11 percent in a Palmetto Poll last November. Mike Huckabee is in second place with 22 percent – up from 13 percent last November. Mitt Romney is in third, with 13 percent – down from 17 percent in November. And despite his recent efforts, Fred Thompson is in fourth, with 10 percent – also down from November, when he had 15 percent support. Rudy Giuliani is in disastrous shape, down to three percent from nine percent in November and 18 percent (a virtual tie for the lead) last August.
Seventeen percent of those surveyed said they were still undecided. But when the Palmetto pollsters asked those who did support a candidate whether they were sure of their support or whether they might change their mind before the primary, 46 percent said they might change their mind.

Talk about editors. You used a convenient edit and an ellipses when quoting me to create a false impression. You deleted the part where I highly approved both of the appearance and way of thinking on at least one segment of the SC population, and I criticized another section based upon their appearance and their reasoning after being given ample opportunity to explain it on national TV. I saw a bunch of people from SC. I liked the looks and thoughts of some and didn’t like the looks and thoughts of others. Only your edit created the impression of geographical bigotry.

What all this tells me and should tell yawl is that most Republicans aren’t pure conservatives. The Republican party has not been strictly conservative for a long time which is the main reason for the growth of other parties like the Libertarians, Constitutionalists, etc.
Another consideration for the skewed Republican primary vote is that there are probably liberals who are voting Republican simply because they can’t stand any of the Democratic candidates.

“I think the Democratic Party is a fine party, and I have no problems with it, in their views and their philosophy.” – John McCain
As stated at Newsmax.com: Friday, April 2, 2004
“McCain Praises ‘Fine’ Democrats, Blasts ‘Astray’ GOP and Bush” http://archive.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2004/4/2/115508.shtml
Fred needs to get this statement by McCain on as much media outlets as possible. How can a so called “conservative” say this. Republicans should flock from McCain and in a hurry.

Hollowpoint on January 16, 2008 at 4:43 PMNothing against you but I don’t think my boyfriend would appreciate the disloyalty. And see what I mean Madi? Look at what Hollowpoint says at the end of that comment. It’s the saying Fred! will lose ALREADY that makes me think you guys are defeatists.
I look at it like what Empress Theodora said during the Nika uprising in the Hypodrome:
“Whether or not a woman should give an example of courage to men, is neither here nor there. At a moment of desperate danger one must do what we can. I think that flight, even if it brings us to safety, is not in our interest. Every man born to see the light of day must die. But the one who has been emperor should become an exile I cannot bear. May I never be without the purple I wear, nor live to see the day when men do not call me “Your Majesty!” If you wish safety, my Lord, that is an easy matter. We are rich, and there is the sea, and yonder our ships. But consider whether if you reach safety you may not desire to exchange that safety for death. As for me, I like the old saying, that the purple is the noblest shroud.”

RushBaby on January 16, 2008 at 5:27 PM
Judge for yourself.
If you still defend that, you’re still a creep.
Don’t know if I like Madi. Too close to Mahdi.
And Sultry, being a Fredhead doesn’t mean closing out reality. I want Fred to win the nomination. If he doesn’t, I’ll stay home this election, because I’m not voting for a liberal. However, by reasonable accounts, it’s not looking good. Anything could happen, and I’m looking forward to a big surprise, but the odds are challenging. Preparing for disappointment does not equate acknowledgement of defeat.
For perspective: I’m a Packer fan. I’m jazzed. I’m also prepared for the realities that the Giants could snipe us out of the Super Bowl, and even if we get there, the Patriots are juggernauts. Just because I’m ready for disappointment doesn’t mean I won’t be watching and cheering. ;)

Sultry Beauty on January 16, 2008 at 5:28 PM
I didn’t follow the thread to that point, but I don’t think she has BP. My mom has it, a very severe case of it, from 30+ years ago. Way before they know what they know now. BP causes a drooping of the facial muscles. While Jeri does have a bit of asymmetry to the side of her mouth, it pulls up, not down. When my mom got it, it was so bad that it looked like half her face was melted wax; she had to tape her eyelid shut, and still can’t drink properly. It’s not as noticeable now, but yeah, I don’t think Jeri has BP. Who knows and who cares? No one’s face is symmetrical 100%. If you split a photo of your face, left and right, and then flip a copy of each to make two whole faces that are symmetrical, they look like different people most of the time. You’d be shocked!
