Exactly, none of them do. Our energy policy today is the equivalent of buying steel from Nazi Germany in the early ’40’s. We are indeed funding our own demise.

In your opinion. Methanol is a far better alternative to fuel vehicles than Ethanol because it can be produced from so many sources, and it would be much cheaper to purchase than gasoline currently is. In addtion, the infrastructure changes to accomodate a move to methanol would be minimal.

Ethanol wastes energy, fertilizer, and water. Shame on Bush for supporting that scam. It’s hard to beat the concentrated energy of gasoline, along with it’s ease of storage. Maybe that ethanol in Iowa was diverted into some good hooch. That’d explain the vote.

Did you read anything that I posted? Ethanol is a non-starter because first and foremost it drives up the cost of two very key commodities — corn and sugar. Second, it’s not a good alternative because, as you noted, it wastes a lot of energy during production.

The ethanol push is coming from the corn-growing states and ADM.

Natural gas, hydro, and coal are sources. Gas is made expensive by burning it to make electricity. Oil is a source and may not come from dinosaurs at all.

Who the heck is burning gas for electricity? Our primary sources for major power are three: Hydro, Coal and Nuclear. We are at our limit (physical locations) right now on Hydro, and Coal and Nuclear have so many detractors initiating legal roadblocks it’s hard to make any headway.

We can’t look and we can’t build because the loons don’t want energy. They want to control our thermostats — and us. McCain’s record sucks.

Exactly. We agree.

These rising energy prices are beginning to seriously impact the economy. Inflation is running really high (been grocery shopping lately?)

The only way to get the price down soon is through increasing the current supply. There is plenty of oil out there. The only thing lacking is the will to go get it.

Alternative fuels are, for the moment, a pipe dream.

Being that I live here in the Last Frontier and have been all over the North Slope of Alaska from Alpine to Endicott and into ANWR in the village of Kaktovik, you are actually wrong on the 18 miles. It actually is only a 5 square mile area which is around Kaktovik area. And ANWR isn’t the size of South Carolina… think more like Montana.

We can no longer afford to quibble over these asinine environmental issues; and forget all of this “alternative energy” crap, by the way, it will never happen.

The world’s economy runs on oil, every sector of our national economy depends on it, and would collapse without it.

Energy production in this country is no longer about anything other than national security and survival.

Nuclear is a source and breeder reactors can generate new fuel from useless U-238. They can burn excess plutonium also. The nuclear folks say to recycle the fuel and re-burn the heavy elements, leaving light fission products that need storage for a few hundred years only.

The candidates are creeps and the electorate thinks it can vote energy out of thin air. Maybe it’s just the winter dark talking. :-\

Wise enough to not take short-term gain over long-term environment destruction. Oil is a finite resource, why continue to destroy the environment by using it and extracting it when we should be conserving energy and using renewable energy instead?

McCain and Newt have the courage to challenge close-minded anti-conservation/environment/… conservatives for the greater good.

Well, this was always an underlying thought during the Cold War — save/conserve our oil for a “rainy day” and consume imported oil in the meantime.

Methanol is certainly welcome at the party. It’s made from wood and for some reason has not caught on to the same degree as ethanol. It might have to do with the cost of manufacture. Our energy needs are so great that all of these combined do not represent but a portion of the solution. Nuclear plants, plug electrics, hybrids, are all helpful as well. Plug electrics might have the greatest potential at the moment (for reducing oil use.) The development could really help Detroit if they take the lead in this technology, and thus far, they have with the Volt concept. Toyota will be on their heels with a plug prius. Ford may have a plug escape and a nice Volvo soon as well. There will be a great deal of automotive technology introduced over the next several years.

Unfortunately, battery-powered trucks aren’t going to be a viable solution. 18-wheelers and other delivery and work trucks need a different solution than what is proposed for passenger vehicles. It may be natural gas or methanol, but plug-in battery power is not going to work. These vechiles will need to refuel quickly and be on their way, and they will need to have the same level of power necessary to move the amount of products that are transported over-the-road on a daily basis.

And methanol drives up the price of natural gas (which is another thing the liberals won’t let us drill for).

Natural Gas is not the only source for methanol.

As pointed out in the book The Methanol Economy, “Methanol is commonly known as “wood alcohol” because it can be produced from wood; it can also be made from coal, natural gas (as noted), methane hydrates, any type of biomass, or urban waste.”
