Terrific: McCain vows not to drill in ANWR

A last-minute Huckabeean pander to his (real) base? Nope. He means every word.

I confess, I was looking forward to the race being whittled down tonight so that I wouldn’t have to subject you to another three days of five-man what-if scenarios in South Carolina. But now that I find things aren’t trending Maverick’s way? I think I’m okay with it.

Wonderful.

Bye.

Mcguyver on January 15, 2008 at 7:00 PM

Yeah Juanita,
That is just what we need. More dependence on terror-oil.
You idiot!

Enviromania!

More Jihad-o-line

More terroleum

More Islamoil

TheSitRep on January 15, 2008 at 7:03 PM

Bonus:

The ruling has come down. Hillary: The Movie, a perfectly legitimate if politically-edgy documentary about the Sob Sister Number One, will have to go without advertising, because advertising on its behalf would run afoul of McCain-Feingold.

Bye McCain.

It’s been real.

Now leave.

Mcguyver on January 15, 2008 at 7:03 PM

No oil for us but lots of illegal aliens.

Mac – just fold up your liberalism and go away. You’re history (I HOPE) !!!

OBX Pete on January 15, 2008 at 7:05 PM

SECOND LOOK AT PANDERING!

Mcguyver on January 15, 2008 at 7:05 PM

why wouldnt we want to drill in Alaska?

If the US can become self sufficient we could solve alot of our problems in the middle east. We wouldnt have to make policy decisions based on needing cheap oil.

offroadaz on January 15, 2008 at 7:05 PM

Ugh…what’s happened to our party when people like Thompson and Hunter are thrown to the side…

spacekicker on January 15, 2008 at 7:05 PM

What a fool! Billions of barrels of oil are available to drillers, at very little environmental risk, but these idiots would rather have us provide more funding for Mideast Islamists and South American tyrants. I’ll never understand their logic.

liberty on January 15, 2008 at 7:06 PM

Shouldn’t there be a point where the RNC just tells McCain that he’s on the wrong ballot? He makes a compelling democrat…

blankminde on January 15, 2008 at 7:07 PM

He may self-destruct yet. It’s really just a matter of time.

AUINSC on January 15, 2008 at 7:07 PM

McCain, now drinks the kool-aid!

flbill on January 15, 2008 at 7:07 PM

Although I pefer options like the Bussard Fusion Reactor, new more efficient and cheaper solar cells, and improving ethanol production methods, those are longer term options and we need to decrease our dependence on foreign oil NOW. Open ANWR!

Mojave Mark on January 15, 2008 at 7:08 PM

RINO oh noes!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hawkins1701 on January 15, 2008 at 7:09 PM

This is the McCain we’ve grown to dislike and distrust in Arizona. When we went to him and asked for help in reforming the mortgage industry…ten years ago…he wouldn’t even send a staffer out to greet us, his constituents, who had traveled to DC to make our point. We asked him in writing to help us clean up the industry before it got out of hand..and he didn’t even respond.
Support Mr. McCain at your own peril.

DrW on January 15, 2008 at 7:09 PM

What kind of grudge does he have against American in general and the Republican Party in particular?

RushBaby on January 15, 2008 at 7:10 PM

Dependency on foreign oil to continue!

Woo Hoo!!!

The RINOvirus strikes again.

SimplyKimberly on January 15, 2008 at 7:10 PM

Go Fred!

flbill on January 15, 2008 at 7:11 PM

what a douche… I don’t even want to read his explanation, can someone sum it up for me?

Oh, btw… even though our oil prices are only now catching up with Europe’s, it shouldn’t be high for anyone. This is all based on the myth that oil is “finite” and that we’re on the verge of reaching “peak” oil, etc. etc. it’s all nonsense. As for ANWR, what sucks is that last I heard it would take 10 years to reap the benefits of that oil (which of course we’d be doing TODAY if Clinton had done what he should have). I just wonder if in 10 years it will even matter? Will we still be using oil? This speculation BS running the price up will make it pretty unaffordable… won’t some hero billionaire liberal step forward with the discovery of an alternative fuel by then? (Oh that’s right, they aren’t really about solving that problem, they’re busy lying to us about “global warming” so that they can make money and give more control over to the UN, like a “carbon tax” among other things)

RightWinged on January 15, 2008 at 7:12 PM

This honestly cracks me up.

I have been to ANWR (the area they would like to drill). It is flat up there and interesting enough the only hill you can find are what they call “Pingo’s” (look it up in a geological dictionary). The Natives in Kaktovik would LOVE for the Oil Companies to come drill in that area… jobs for them and extra donations of natural gas and leasing/spacing and unitization agreement come to mind.

McCain …. has alwasy been agaisnt ANWR, as are MOST of Congress.

upinak on January 15, 2008 at 7:12 PM

McCain won NH because they let dems vote in the GOP primaries, and because it is the land of the RINO. That’s it.
I bet he had no idea how much milage he would get from failing his mission can getting shot down.

Spartacus on January 15, 2008 at 7:12 PM

McCain vows not to drill in ANWR

Great! Now he’s only one or two policy positions away from being able to be Hill’s or Obama’s running mate.

BacaDog on January 15, 2008 at 7:12 PM

What kind of grudge does he have against American in general and the Republican Party in particular?

RushBaby on January 15, 2008 at 7:10 PM

He’s still pissed about the American people shutting him down on his amnesty bill.

flbill on January 15, 2008 at 7:13 PM

normsrevenge on January 15, 2008 at 7:13 PM

If McCain doesn’t do well in SC, he could change parties and become the Dems nominee. No loss to the Pubs.

msflea on January 15, 2008 at 7:14 PM

Bad move for John. Energy Independance might well be the most significant issue of the next four years. If not four, then certainly the next eight. ANWAR, Florida, Virginia, California, Colorado Shale — we’re going to need every drop that we can find and then some. If you live in Iowa — start planting more corn (switchgrass if you live in Florida.)

Kevin43 on January 15, 2008 at 7:16 PM

I’d say McCain is shooting himself in the foot…but I think he’s aiming a little higher and more toward the midline.

RushBaby on January 15, 2008 at 7:10 PM

Question of the day, IMHO.

I can’t wait to hear his concession speech if he loses to Mitt tonight. Through gritted teeth and with barely controlled rage he’ll be forced to listen to Alan Colmes ask him over and over and over why he didn’t win.

BacaDog on January 15, 2008 at 7:17 PM

McCain is at his high-water mark…all downhill from here (fingers crossed).

bbz123 on January 15, 2008 at 7:18 PM

He’d make a great candidate… on the Dem ticket.

petefrt on January 15, 2008 at 7:18 PM

I sick and tired of this country being held hostage to these kinds of energy policies. Get real people, we will be using oil and coal for a long time to come, while we develop other alternatives. Why do we have to continue to fork over our $$$ to our Saudi “fwiends”?
You wanna talk change. How about letting us use our own resources for crying out loud! Why do we have to be the only major freakin’ country in the world that can’t?

andysdick on January 15, 2008 at 7:18 PM

It’s insane to be in the oil market, but only as a purchaser while your own oil sits in the ground and your dollars flow overseas.

snickelfritz on January 15, 2008 at 7:18 PM

Its interesting that we whimper and protect “mother earth” when we’re talking about resources that we control, but our Congress is happy to suck sweet crude from anywhere else in the world. Globalism anyone?

That’s great John. It’s not like the US is dependent on foreign oil or anything. Aren’t we fortunate that oil prices are currently so low. Thank goodness you’ve managed to save the precious arctic wasteland tundra splendor from exploitation. I’m sure all the native Inuit who live there will thank you. Oh, wait – they’re in favor of drilling, and the jobs and income it will bring.

And I am sorry but this “poll” that you have is based off models from people who live in Villages (which are tiny communities you can’t drive too) …. we have a whole bunch of tree hugging hippies and a bunch of ultra conservatives. It is also 3 years old almost. We are more worried about the TransAlaska Natural Gas line then ANWR right now.

Also we have NPRA (National Petroleum Reserve Alaska) that BLM also has right too that many oil companies are exploring right now. I can got on forever. ANWR is just one area that has oil.. NPRA, The Alutiens, Bristol Bay, The Guld of Alaska, Chuckchi Sea…. need I go on?

Well, you’re in favor, and I met one other person in my lifetime that was from Alaska and he was in favor, so therefore, 100% of every person I know in Alaska is in favor. Kidding aside, Alaska doesn’t have enough oil to solve the problem. We really need to be looking more closely at Colorado. It holds the largest amount of oil that can be found on the planet — makes the middle east look pathetic. Only problem is that it’s trapped in shale. Good news is that Shell developed a good technology to get it out of the shale without mining. Bad news is I’m sure we wont be allowed to go after that either. We’ve got shale laced with oil in a number of places throughout the country, in very large quantities.

I’ll admit it. I was softening to McCain. You know,

electability

and all that. But then here he comes to remind me why I could never, ever vote for him. I was talking with a colleague today – a democrat – and he said, “Why don’t you support McCain? He’s your best shot.” Now, I didn’t go all “principled voter” on him — I like havin’ my guy in the White House — I just found myself saying, “There’s worse things than losing.” My colleague asked what that could possibly be. “A liberal Republican,” I said. “I can take 4 years of a liberal democrat. A liberal Republican? Not so much. He’s just gonna disappoint me over and over and over.”

Wise, there is a difference in the CO project then Alaska. I know all about the CO project and what they are doing is called UIC. it uses natural gas, water (sanitizated and minus bacteria) and a Few other things to scour the sands. They also do other things.. Trust me this has been around a lot longer then people realize.

BTW shale, sweet crude or other oil…. the most expensive thing to look for Oil is the exploration part of it. A Discovery may be a giant step, but you have to let the Companies get to that point if you ever want to find more oil.

I already know where to find a lot of oil. It’s less than 50 miles from my house in the Gulf of Mexico. China is drilling for it now (near Cuba) — American companies are not allowed. You like the way Hugo Chavez acts? Wait until Cuba is floating in money and attitude from its oil money (oil that is being stolen from America.) We also have quite a bit off the coast of VA, and quite a bit off the coast of CA.

We need to be doing 100 things today to solve this dependance. That includes drilling for more here, using less to begin with, and developing alternatives.

1973 was a walk in the park compared to what I fear is coming. It may not happen in 4 years, but I would bet that it will happen in 8.

It is called UIC. Underground Injection Control. They can take super pressurized natural gas, water, carbon monoxide and inject it into the formations which scours the gas off the rocks and a few other things. No matter where you are in the USA, all wells have to be cased… depending on how far down the well is doesn’t matter. It is to protect Ground Water (which is a common trait anywhere anymore) as well. The Casings are super specialized cement that is the WORST thing in the world to touch (very abrasive baby powder like) but holds out water and hold in the oil and/or natural gas.

upinak on January 15, 2008 at 8:02 PM

I wish i knew what to say except get started on the whys and hows on making laws go into effect on changing the offshore for states on Oceans. I have the same problems here in Alaska … Alutiens and China/Russia that you never hear in the media.

But Canada is different. They tar sands are a collective and interesting area. They actually have to “cook” the oil out of the rocks… interesting process I am researching. I could tell you more but I am not trying to bore you.
