Predictions: Michigan
posted at 8:38 am on January 15, 2008 by Allahpundit
The polls are open and time’s a-wastin’. If Romney can’t win on his home court then he can’t win anywhere, and I can’t believe he can’t win anywhere. Mitt in an upset, with a 50% chance of tears during the victory speech when he inevitably says something about Michigan having — oof — “brought home the gold.” Chance of tears from Hugh Hewitt? 100%.
Your class-warrior primary quote of the day, via K-Lo:
“For those of us for whom summer is not a verb, for those of us who didn’t go to fancy boarding schools on the east coast, for those of us who didn’t grow up with a silver spoon, who were lucky to have a spoon — ask those folks and they’ll tell you the economy is not doing well for them,” says Huckabee.
On the Dem side, it’s purely a question of Hillary’s margin of victory over “uncommitted.” Geraghty noted yesterday that she’s only at 48%; quite a stinker if she can’t break 50% running against, um, nobody. Figure that a few erstwhile Obama supporters will cross the aisle and vote in the GOP race and that she’ll make it with a few points to spare. You got the gold, Glacier!

Update: Bad weather in Michigan means good news for Huck, whose troops are probably the most motivated.

Where are the poll numbers? How can anyone make a prediction without a dang poll?

It would be such Schadenfreude for Hillary to lose to Uncommitted.
jdog on January 15, 2008 at 8:42 AM
Because 96% employment and the lowest home mortgage rates in 40 years just isn’t good enough when you’re running for President. But I’ll bet it’s good enough — silly, giddy, falling on the ground laughing good enough — when you actually are the President…

Where are the polls? How are we supposed to think if the polls don’t tell us what to think? Brainwashing almost complete.

I hope you’re right and Romney wins, even if he does it with Daily Kos Dim voters. Who cares? A win is a win. Anything that helps stop the momentum of Juan Shamnesty McCain is fine by me. I only wish I could have been in Michigan to help add to the boos Juan was receiving when he tried to rationalize his support for his and Teddy K’s No Illegal Alien Left Behind bill.
The future of this country is at stake. Stop McCain now!

GO UNCOMMITTED!
It don’t get much more Conservative than Uncommitted. Uncommitted, even as a young politician serving the people, was FAR more conservative than Reagan. I challenge ANYONE to find a single tax hike or entitlement program proposed by this stalwart Conservative. ANYONE!!!
On the flipside, let’s look at spending. I challenge EVERYONE to find one instance where Uncommitted has proposed a new program or even hinted at one during the tenure of Uncommitted’s long and storied political career.
Yes, Uncommitted may not have the name recognition of Senator Clinton but the record stands for itself.
Pilgrim endorses Uncommitted for this important race.

It says a lot that McCain will probably get a boost from Hillary being the only Dem that stayed on the ballot. At this point, if Mitt can’t win Michigan is there really any hope?
blankminde on January 15, 2008 at 8:50 AM
I understood that MI gets ZERO delegates to the Dem. convention, because they moved their primary up without permission. If true, Hillary gets fool’s gold??
And Rep. party rescinded 1/2 of the normal MI delegate count??
Therefore, NV has more delegates at stake than MI??

The MSM may have found someone to promote that Republicns dislike more than Hillary….Juan McCain. “A great civilization cannot be conquered until it destroys itself from within.” Amnesty will create a one party system and the sovereignty of our nation will cease to exist. The American Union is the next step.

Why is Romney paling around with the Islamist supporter Rep Joe Knollenberg (R-MI) in his campaign. We know that Romney said that he “admires” Hezbollah, but to now put on his team a man that has helped in funding Hezbollah is just beyond the pale. Frankly I am not surprised because I think with Romney we will get the same suck up to the Saudis and their Islamist buddies that we have gotten, unfortunately, from Pres Bush.
Romney is a bad choice, but I am pretty sure that McCain is no better, maybe even worse. And how did we get here:
1. George Allen and the “maccaca’ remark took him out
2. Rudy has done a poor job of making the very good case that his administration can reduce the number of abortions in the US and that we can have pro-life policy even if it is not exactly the dogmatic policy that some folks want.
Both Romney and McCain are terrible alernatives to Rudy.

I wouldn’t bank on bad weather. I just posted the weather and it is just fine. We awoke to dusting on the cars(you get in turn the windsheild wipers on and the car is clean). The main roads are just fine with some slick spots on the less traveled side roads…This is considered a beautiful day when looking at a January winter. I also noted that this is the first time I have ever been asked to show id at a polling station..I think that will be more of an issue than any false weather story.

I’m sick and tired of this bit of misinformation. Romney has ties to Michigan but the man was governor of Mass. That far left-leaning socialist state is “home court” for Mitt- not the People’s Republic of Michigan where the “independents” have no dog in the fight on the “rat” side and could well spike the guns by voting for a loser like McCain who is far less electable on the national level than Romney.
In the meantime, somebody really needs to put Rudy’s picture on milk cartons. The man has completely disappeared- much to my delight. I have problems with Romney but Rudy would be an utter trainwreck of a President. The quicker he realizes that the better for the party.

Romney will probably win narrowly over McCain… But if McCain wins (narrowly also), we’ll have to listen to a bunch of “This was a must win for Romney”, but people ignoring the delegate count. Romney will make it clear he’s NOT dropping out, but we’ll still here all the “must win” stuff up until (and possibly after) the next primary.
As for this idiocy from Huckabee:
Once again proving how accurate Fred! was when he wasted Huckabee in the debate the other night. Is that quote not straight out of the Democrat/media’s play book?
For like the millionth time, that comment is totally inaccurate. For the past few years polls have consistently shown the vast majority of the country are happy with their OWN finances, but when polled on the economy they rate it negatively. Given that these are just regular people (not economists) they are CLEARLY basing their views of the economy entirely on media coverage, because again, they rate their personal finances positively. The same trend has been seen for polling outside of the economy, and last week continued the trend when we learned that 84% of the public are happy with their lives, but the “right/wrong track” polls are consistently negative. Again, those negatives have to be media generated, because the personal picture is consistently positive.
RightWinged on January 15, 2008 at 9:21 AM
McCain will take it by a huge margin since all of those Democrats have nothing to vote for on their side and will go out and vote for McCain. The media will downplay the Democrat factor and start using the word “consensus” in regards to McCain. There will be much “When will Romney drop out” echo chambering in the dem media.
On the other hand, I’ve never made a correct political prediction.
Buddahpundit on January 15, 2008 at 9:21 AM
I predict unprecedented electoral mischief in MI designed to crater Mitt and prop up the worst possible candidate, McCain. The Dem side is meaningless, so the truly detestable among the stalinists would find more joy in vandalizing the other side than voting in an uncontested race for the candidate they don’t support anyway. Win Win for them. Hillary loses to Undecided and McCain takes Michigan, thereby causing more heartache and demoralization on the conservative side.

Mitt Romney cited Hezbollah’s social network as a model for U.S. diplomacy.
The former Massachusetts governor, a front-runner in the race for the Republican presidential candidacy, was asked during a campaign stop in Iowa over the weekend whether he would renew President Bush’s $50 million campaign to combat AIDS in Africa.
Romney said he would, and would use American know-how to advance U.S. interests.
“Did you notice in Lebanon what Hezbollah did?” he said in remarks broadcast on C-Span and captured by Crooks and Liars, a liberal Web site. “Lebanon became a democracy some time ago and while their government was getting under way, Hezbollah went into southern Lebanon and provided health clinics to some of the people there, and schools. And they built their support there by having done so. That kind of diplomacy is something that would help America become stronger around the world and help people understand that our interest is an interest towards modernity and goodness and freedom for all people in the world. And so, I want to see America carry out that kind of health diplomacy.”
Israel says Hezbollah used its social activism as a cover to blanket south Lebanon with arms, helping to precipitate last summer’s war.

Snow Keeping Michigan Turnout Down
Campaign Spot reader Bruce reports that turnout is down from previous years, at least so far…
In Oakland County [north suburban Detroit] we had three inches of snow overnight, and now its 20s and windy. At my polling place only 16 people had voted by 8:54 a.m. [The automatic ballot reader shows how many have voted on an LED.] I always vote around 8:45 to 9:00 a.m. Normally 50 to 70 have voted by then.
I don’t know who a light turn out favors. I’d guess it favors Romney and Huckabee over McCain.

Historically, Michigan primaries have a low turnout. The state is prepared for a spike, but I would be surprised if it happened..People always talk a good game but fail to show up at the primaries..I hope I am wrong. The various news organizations did a tremendous job in letting the voters know about the “uncommitted” option. I applaud them for working together to get that message out. They need 15% but I hope they get far more than that just so that the silly woman will finally get her cumupance.
As I said, the big story will be the I.D. Voters must present a photo I.D. at the polls, or sign the affadavit on the back of the ballot indicating they have no I.D. Firsts are always a problem, and today was the first day they are enforcing it!

If Romney is that Repub candidate, he will lose to Hillary.
We conservatives have covered up for Romney’s “on the way to the nomination” conversions on abortion, gay rights, gun control. And so because of this, we have jettisoned Rudy who at least had the guts to be honest about his opinions.
Why would be think it is better to allow ourselves to be bamboozled by Romney rather than deal with the facts as they are. I would always rather have an honest and forthright person as the team leader than someone cannot stop slinging the BS at me, which is what Romney has done to Republicans.
Rudy has the best real executive experience in the group. Romney has been an investment banker — they don’t manage companies, they fund and manage investments and they treat the folks as widgets.
At least Rudy has been in trenches on real issues in several different public and private sector jobs.

So if we don’t like Romney, we are Democrats?
With the Romney machine in place for years, with all of the money spent (record amounts, off the charts amounts), this should be a cake walk, a slam dunk, Mitt should walk away with the “gold” without a sweat. There should be no question.
The fact that it is a horse race, shows his machine is strong, organization is strong, but he is weak.
You can have the biggest, baddest tractor in town that moves record amount of dirt, but when you climb down of the tractor and someone hands you a shovel and you don’t which end is up…you ain’t much of a construction worker. Mitts feet never touch the “dirt”, and the real, grounded people know it.

Fascinating, absolutely fascinating.
Your bashing of Romney includes the comment:
Why no mention of running a far-left state as a Republican? Why no mention of his running the Salt Lake City Olympics and saving them from financial ruin? These are important parts of his resume that show he has been “in trenches on real issues in several different public and private sector jobs.”
Rudy would be a trainwreck of a President. The number of close colleagues who have ethical problems show that, at a minimum, he is a terrible judge of character. Rudy is for gay marriage and wants to circumvent the 2nd Amendment. I trust Senator Clinton more than I do Rudy because she doesn’t lie about where she stands on the issues. I don’t agree with her views but she is far more honest than the man you are trying to pawn off on the party.

I take what he is saying about what happened in Lebanon is a model that works. To go into the countries that hate America, shows some compassion, help the people out, and they will see us in a different light, they will in turn need our help and support our viewpoints, see us as not evil, just as they see Hezbollah.
He is basically saying that Hezbollah sabotaged the true election, by going in first. We need to sabotage the terrorist and beat them to the young hearts and minds in the poorest countries, if we dont do it, Hezbollah will, and the people will turn to them for support.

When Romney ran Mass. I think he did a pretty good job. That is not the problem, the problem is that he is trying to BS the Repub primary voters by now staking out positions that he did not hold in Mass. He is lying.
As for his Olympics, he really did not do a good job with that at all. Furthermore, he made what can only be construed as anti-American statements on that job so that he could suck up the left wing Olympic committees. The guy is Zelig. We need a president to be honest.
And now that we know that you support Hillary or “Senator Clinton” as you call her, we can be pretty clear on your politics. Hillary, on no, she doesn’t have any ethical problems…. Are kidding:

When you attack Romney, then the Mitt-wits attack you. They can’t help it. That is a major reason not to support Mitt. His supporters are like Paul’s supporters, any little dig, and they become attack dogs.
Mitt supporters are so sensitive they bring up class warfare, even when it isn’t mentioned.
Yet as strong as supporters they are, they cannot honestly state what his positions are (but they can sure issue personal attacks)…what they are for the next year, based on his flips.
Is he gun-control or not…based on his history
Is he support the right for abortion or not…based on history
Is he a conservative or not…based on history
Is Kennedy his friend and collaborator?
What he says now, does not comport to what he has said in the past.
He needs a few years of believing the same thing to be a “honest” candidate.

*sigh*. Romney was not an investment banker:
investment banker — an underwriter who serves as a middleman between a corporation issuing new securities and the public. Usually, an investment banker, or several investment bankers in a syndicate, buy the securities issue outright, then sell the securities to individuals or institutions.
Balderdash. His statement was made in response to a question as to whether or not we should provide AIDS funding to Africa. He was talking about public relations/winning hearts and minds, and only a “gullible idiot” would fall for your idiotic spin that he “admires” a terrorist group.
If you want to argue that we should never engage in diplomatic efforts like providing AIDS funding, fine, that is a perfectly legitimate point of view.
However, to maintain that engaging in social diplomacy is equivalent to emulating terrorists is an unsustainable position.

First, Bain is a cosulting group that except for the very technical parts, basically acts as an investment banker in much of its business. I work in the business and I am not guessing on this. By the way, Romney was basically a rainmaker and dealmaker in his capacity and functionally it was investment banking.
Second, you miss the whole point the Hezbollah issue. They are not a social agency they are explicitly a terrorist group that use politics and murder and graft to do their business. The idea that we should emulate this is ridiculous.
Let me state this again: Hezbollah does not engage in social diplomacy, they engage in terror and graft and murder and bribery and intimidiation. Get it??

I do not miss the point on what Hezbollah is. I am perfectly aware that it is a terrorist group and nothing would make me happier than to see it be obliterated.
If you want to argue that Romney was misinformed when he said that Hezbollah used social programs in Lebanon to get support and increase their popularity, fine, you can do that, but you would be wrong:
Hezbollah organizes an extensive social development program and runs hospitals, news services, and educational facilities.
Noting that fact is not the same thing as emulating or admiring terrorists.

Most of the time your primary vote has little or no bearing on who is nominated at the convention. Who runs your City, County and State has far greater impact on your daily life than which lying theif is elected President.

At the same time the Lions held training camp there, and where Paper Lion, the George Plimpton inspired story starring Alan Alda was filmed. And also starring my pee wee football coach, Alex Karras.

Is this an omen for McCain’s campaign?

Mitt by 5%. We really, really need Hillary to do well. Obama is not a good guy to have as POTUS.

3 inches of snow overnight and the temp in the 20s at 9 am is supposedly going to suppress the vote in Michigan? I’ve been in Chicago in January a few times, and 20s by 9 am would have felt balmy.
20 inches of snow, 0 degrees, 30 mph wind blowing, now that would get your attention. But you’d still have to be at work by mid-morning.

He said PREDICTIONS, not insane wishful thinking. For starters, you’ve obviously missed the coverage both here and at MM of the Dems (being pushed by Kos) to vote for Romney in Michigan, precisely because Hillary is unchallenged in MI, so they want to mix it up in the GOP race (because Dems CAN vote in the GOP primary in MI). There’s a statistical tie between Romney and McCain there right now, with Romney up by less than a percent. So it’s basically 50/50, but I think Romney might pull it out. If he doesn’t, he’s still doing very well (comparatively) in the delegate race.
But your SC prediction is what is really insane. Sadly, McCain is stomping everyone in SC, and 3 are battling for a very distance second (I glanced at the latest poll on FNC earlier, but I believe it was Huck, Romney, and Fred… Fred polling 4th, though not that far behind the other 2… but it doesn’t matter, because they are all WAY behind McCain (again, sadly). Fred’s goose is cooked here, I’m sorry to say. And Romney can take second in MI no problem… he’s done well and has lots of cash.. it’s McCain who absolutely has to ride the wave of momentum or he’s done. Same for Fred! but SC was his only hope, and it’s pretty much dead. Only a first place there would give him even a chance of showing later.
Still don’t know what will happen with Giuliani, but I think he’s likely done, but that remains to be seen. I think the important thing is working on ensuring Huckabee gets out of the race, next it should be McCain. Thompson is a lost cause.
RightWinged on January 15, 2008 at 11:22 AM
I’m in the Detroit area, and half of my co-workers (mostly frightening liberals) will NOT be voting in the primary because they feel “uncomfortable” declaring what ballot they want.
shibumi on January 15, 2008 at 11:23 AM
Hardly! Were I forced to vote today, Romney would be my choice because, on balance, he fits my views far more than Rudy, Huckabee, or Thompson. My only point is that Rudy flat-out lies about some issues that are fundamental show stoppers for me and I can’t tolerate such dishonesty.
P.S. You attack me as a Clinton supporter because of the use of Senator Clinton but I do that for the reasons Carl Rove laid out- You don’t want to be calling her thighness Hillary because it humanizes her and makes it appear like she is a human being with feelings. By sticking to Senator Clinton you keep her in the right box so we don’t have a repeat of the NH primaries where morons voted for her because she “cried.”

Got the polling station at 6:45am, before going into work this morning, and was the first person in line. I proudly voted for Fred Thompson. Ballot 001 in Precinct 05 goes to Fred. And my NAVY friend/coworker here called me as he left his polling station to proudly inform me that he voted Fred Thompson as well.
So count at least 2 very early votes for Fred.
Also, listening to Bill Bennet this morning driving into work, I heard 3 votes: one each for McCain, Romney and Duncan Hunter. The first two gave their reasoning as “we have to beat Hillary”. The last gentlemen explained his vote for Duncan Hunter as having come to his decision after listening to the debates and doing research online.
Here’s hoping we have more people voting on principle and less of the “electability” votes.
Michael in MI on January 15, 2008 at 11:29 AM
Oh yeah, most importantly, I was asked for both my voting registration card and my drivers license before I could vote. They didn’t ask for it when I voted in the 2004 election. Granted, there were only 5 people in line at 7am when the polls opened. Maybe when they get a little busier, they will bypass requesting ID. Hopefully not though.
But it was nice to see they were checking ID this time.

Huckabee’s campaign is built entirely on envy.
Notice who he’s appealing to and what he’s saying. He’s not appealing to the Rich and telling them to give… He’s appealing to the poor and telling them to take. I don’t think Jesus is amused.

Predictions:
McCain wins by a nose, is declared Republican favorite for the nomination.
Romney won’t be able to resist referring to 2nd place as the “silver” and vowing to continue despite murmurs within the media punditry that he’s done.
Huckabee will still be a sleazy televangelist populist posing as a Republican politician.
Rontards will tout his 4th or 5th place finish as a victory because he wasn’t dead last while also claiming election fraud.
Thompson will remind everyone that he’s concentrating on SC when it’s pointed out that he did poorly in MI.
Hunter will get no more than 2%, but inexplicably stay in the race as he pretends to still has a chance.
Hollowpoint will continue not giving a crap about Michigan while still being angry and cynical over how things turned out.
Hollowpoint on January 15, 2008 at 11:40 AM
As a lifelong Michiganian, I’ve already predicted a McCain win, with Romney coming in second (barely) over Huck. Here’s my analysis as to why, some of which Rush used on his show, last week. And Romney knows he will not win, which is why he’s now backpedaling from saying Michigan is a must-win. No-one, but his campaign workers, see him as a “favorite son.” He hasn’t lived here in years and his father was a liberal nutjob GOP Gov from 40 years ago, whom no-one remembers. And Hillary will break 50%. She’s very popular here. Even most Black voters–who skew older–support Hillary. Only younger Blacks–who don’t vote much here, according to the figures–support Obama. Again, read the analysis here.

One last thing…
The weather this morning was fine, but the roads sucked. Granted, that was at 7-7:30am when I was going to the polls and then on my way to work (Garden City, MI and Dearborn, MI area). They may have gotten better throughout the morning. But I don’t see anyone leaving work to go to the polls at lunch, since I know I wouldn’t want to go out in the lousy road conditions. There were reports on the radio coming in that there were spinouts all over the area on the highways and such. Not exactly enticing people to come out of the house to drive to the polls to vote.
The roads should be fine by the drive home this evening, but who knows if people will want to bother to go to the polls to vote after work in a basically meaningless Primary here. We’ll see how it goes…

Bain & Company is a consulting firm and it is not the same thing as Bain Capital.
Mitt started Bain Capital, a private equity firm.
After demonstrating his skills at Bain Capital, Mitt was asked to come in and rescue Bain & Company, the consulting firm, when it was going South. He succeeded brilliantly in that effort.
After that success he went on to rescue the Olympics.

If McCain wins can we thank you for your help in defeating Romney, son of the “liberal nut-job” George Romney whom “no one remembers”?
I’ve seen the Asian Tiger ad you refer to, and only an idgit would claim that it is a cheerleading campaign for China when it is clearly the opposite.
