Open thread: Michigan results; Update: Fox News, CNN call it for Mitt; Update: 69% of black Dems vote “uncommitted”; Update: Mitt beats Huck among evangelicals?

Looks like the nets are waiting until the very last Michigan poll closes in 40 minutes to call it but it’s clearly Mitt’s night. And Fred’s too: Compare and contrast.

If Romney wins, it guarantees that four of the big five will be alive and kicking in Florida two weeks from now. Fred will likely be the first one culled on Saturday; if Huckabee grossly disappoints in South Carolina he may go the same way, but McCain’s (likely) defeat tonight will give him a nice boost.

Are you as bored with this as I am? If so, there’s a Democratic debate airing on MSNBC at 9 p.m. And contrary to reports this morning, no, Dennis Kucinich will not be participating.

Update: Here’s CNN’s results page. Politico’s carrying the AP results, too.

Update: 9 p.m., polls are closed. Mitt wins, says Brit. CNN concurs. For once I think Hewitt’s spin is sound. If McCain can’t win in an open primary with no Democratic contest to draw away independents, how’s he going to win anywhere else?

Now we wait for the emotional Hugh/Mitt reunion at Romney HQ.

Update: It’s safe to say that Hillary’s lost the black vote. Not just in Michigan, either.

Update: Mitt’s pushing the “change” line in his victory speech now. Tedious.

Update: Don’t look now, but if this trend holds up it’ll be the second consecutive primary where Huckabee hasn’t done any better with evangelicals than his opponents. He’d better turn that around fast in SC or he’s finished.

That and you know, Romney not being a lefty, abortion-loving, inexperienced, vacuous socialist.

Seriously Centerfire, If you’ve worked in the private sector all your life, there is a near zero chance you support socialism.

BKennedy on January 15, 2008 at 9:20 PM

Agreed: Romney’s not a lefty, abortion-loving, inexperienced, vacuous socialist.

Rather: a lefty, gun-grabbing, mendacious, vacuous socialist.

The “near zero chance” that Romney’s a socialist spits the bit over his record on taxes and healthcare. Anybody claiming he would govern as a conservative is either lying to themselves or has been smoking the funnies page.

Geraghty:

UPDATE: My initial impression: This is the momentumless primary. Huckabee had a really nice win in Iowa… and then performed in New Hampshire about where he was before he won. McCain won New Hampshire, and appears set to do an okay second place, obviously not where he wanted to finish. Romney might get a burst out of this, but then again, he might not.

The rumor in the Fox News green room today was that Romney will skip South Carolina and go straight to Florida. The thinking is, every candidate has gotten something of a bye week, skipping a state that doesn’t seem to fit their strengths well, and Romney might be better off jumping straight to Florida, a state where he’s just a little off the lead, rather than getting in between a Huckabee-McCain-Thompson deathmatch. (How much could he help himself with five days of campaigning, anyway?)

My Romney guy said he hadn’t heard that – not that it wasn’t true, but that it just hadn’t reached his ears yet.

I’m predicting Jeb Bush for Romney’s running mate if he is the nominee.

His healthcare plan provides for private insurance for healthcare isn’t socialism. He did not raise taxes during his tenure in Ma. and while he certainly is more liberal than a Reagan or Goldwater republican, he is far right of McAmensty, Huckster, and any republican govenor Ma. ever had. Any republican is better than Obama, and a conservative like Romney is far better than a liberal republican. True he aint a Reagan conservative, but I will say this as nice as I can, there isn’t a Reagan conservative in the race right now, with the organization, the funds, or the charisnma to drive a winning presidential campaign, and the race to date has shown this true.

Seems that Romney’s supporters take after their candidate, in terms of their fealty to the truth:

His healthcare plan provides for private insurance for healthcare isn’t socialism.

His healthcare plan mandates coverage overseen by a state bureaucracy. There’s very little daylight between RomneyCare and what Clinton’s proposing. It’s socialism.

He did not raise taxes during his tenure in Ma.

Yes, he did. He increased taxes enormously. He just called it a fee increase, and pretended it didn’t count.

His healthcare plan tries to PREVENT socialism. Too many people get to mooch of the gov’t for free healthcare. By making them pay their own way combined with deregulation of the industry, healthcare costs are reduced for all and the burden on the taxpayer is lightened.

I lived in Massachusetts during Romney’s tenure as governor too. And he is the only GOP governor that gave me breath of fresh air after over decade of lame duck republican governors who could not even stand for a second in front of powerful Massachusetts democrats and liberals.

And Romney did not raise taxes during his tenure as governor. Cherry picking “fee increases” is Deval Patrick line of speech when he was railing against Kerry Healy during ‘06 election. Some fees were raised yes, but overall if you look at all the numbers, there have been more reduced taxation (including that of fees) against ordinary MA citizens than there have been increases.
