Open thread: Michigan results; Update: Fox News, CNN call it for Mitt; Update: 69% of black Dems vote “uncommitted”; Update: Mitt beats Huck among evangelicals?

Looks like the nets are waiting until the very last Michigan poll closes in 40 minutes to call it but it’s clearly Mitt’s night. And Fred’s too: Compare and contrast.

If Romney wins, it guarantees that four of the big five will be alive and kicking in Florida two weeks from now. Fred will likely be the first one culled on Saturday; if Huckabee grossly disappoints in South Carolina he may go the same way, but McCain’s (likely) defeat tonight will give him a nice boost.

Are you as bored with this as I am? If so, there’s a Democratic debate airing on MSNBC at 9 p.m. And contrary to reports this morning, no, Dennis Kucinich will not be participating.

Update: Here’s CNN’s results page. Politico’s carrying the AP results, too.

Update: 9 p.m., polls are closed. Mitt wins, says Brit. CNN concurs. For once I think Hewitt’s spin is sound. If McCain can’t win in an open primary with no Democratic contest to draw away independents, how’s he going to win anywhere else?

Now we wait for the emotional Hugh/Mitt reunion at Romney HQ.

Update: It’s safe to say that Hillary’s lost the black vote. Not just in Michigan, either.

Update: Mitt’s pushing the “change” line in his victory speech now. Tedious.

Update: Don’t look now, but if this trend holds up it’ll be the second consecutive primary where Huckabee hasn’t done any better with evangelicals than his opponents. He’d better turn that around fast in SC or he’s finished.

Yep, a win for Mitt in MI helps Fred.

That it does and in a big way in my opinion, but that wasn’t his expressed concern. It was an anti-McCain hate fest with DeMint.

Heard on the news today that they might have to close down the local horse racing track since the groomers are illegals and their lawyers thought they could get a waiver on the new AZ law that went into effect this year against hiring illegals.

All we really need to do is enforce the laws we have on the books.

bnelson44 on January 15, 2008 at 9:03 PM

He is right, it isn’t that big of a deal for McCain. It would have been very bad for Mitt to lose his “favorite son” state.

bnelson44 on January 15, 2008 at 8:52 PM

I disagree. Leaving Iowa, in fourth place, McCain was said to have the “inside lane”, even though Fred beat him for the third place spot. He then went on to win in NH but only by 5 points, considerably smaller than the margin he won by in 2000. Leaving NH it was said that the momentum of NH would help him beat Mitt in MI, which is why all the press up until now was not saying, what would McCain do if Mitt won, but what would Mitt do if McCain won. Now with a loss likely in MI (another state he won in 2000, I believe), he faces a late start in SC where he lost in 2000, and two candidates (Huck and Thompson) having a head start on him. I think FL will have to be his big stand. But he is going to have to compete with Rudy, who is also trying to make it his big stand. What is frustrating is that no matter where McCain ends up, there are never any stories about how he should drop out. The talking heads on the t.v. are always saying how the those who do better than McCain, will end up doing worse in the end.

I HATE arrogant FredHeads. We love your guy, but his campaign SUCKS and it would take a miracle (that somehow slips past Huckabee’s authorization center) for him to win. You (Fredheads in general) keep talking about SC, where he sits at 10%.

malan89 on January 15, 2008 at 9:01 PM

I don’t give a sh*t what you think of me. You can apply my original statement…

That’s exactly the kind of thinking that gives us the candidates we end up with.

Draw a line. Don’t let anyone cross over it. It’s that simple.

…to any and all value systems at play in this election. I don’t care if you back Thompson, McCain, Kucinich or Stalin. You have to fight for what you believe. Those who fight the hardest, win.

I’ve been doing this stuff since the early 70s, pal, when “conservative” was a dirty word. I know when I see a once-in-20-year candidate that reflects my values.

You can all me anything you want, but you’re gonna have to get used to the fact that some of us DO believe in miracles.

Fred is great, but nowhere near perfect. None of these candidates fully reflect my values, and I consider my self a strong conservative on 95% of issues. Geez.

Mitt hate.

I don’t get it. Yeah he’s plastic, yeah he’s flipped on some issues, but saying he will take his orders as president from the editorial pages from the New York Times? That’s just delusional.

Dude, he took a full barium enema EVERY DAY for FOUR YEARS from the Boston Globe for his positions on gay marriage and embryonic stem cells.

He’s not a candidate of convenience.

I think Rudy or Fred would govern better and have a better chance in the general, but painting Mitt like he’s some Clinton clone in Reagan drag is just ridiculous.

Michigan voters really only had too choices tonighe, vote for Shamnesty John or a Caesaropapist Huck or a recent convert on social issues and that’s moderate squish on some issues (guns, healthcare) but hardcore conservative on fiscal governance and foreign policy. (Fred was unfortunately not a contender)

They made the right choice.

Tonight was a good night for the movement.

For reals? (I don’t have TV.)
Maybe he meant it as a joke, but I don’t think that’s “cute”.

For reals. Not funny at all…and I think there will be more stupidisms the closer we get to the next one. Ok by me to see him fall on his face trying to be folksy like the peasants.

FWIW, I don’t have a TV either, but you can stream FoxNews here: If you have IE. :o)
