Open thread: Michigan results; Update: Fox News, CNN call it for Mitt; Update: 69% of black Dems vote “uncommitted”; Update: Mitt beats Huck among evangelicals?

Looks like the nets are waiting until the very last Michigan poll closes in 40 minutes to call it but it’s clearly Mitt’s night. And Fred’s too: Compare and contrast.
If Romney wins, it guarantees that four of the big five will be alive and kicking in Florida two weeks from now. Fred will likely be the first one culled on Saturday; if Huckabee grossly disappoints in South Carolina he may go the same way, but McCain’s (likely) defeat tonight will give him a nice boost.
Are you as bored with this as I am? If so, there’s a Democratic debate airing on MSNBC at 9 p.m. And contrary to reports this morning, no, Dennis Kucinich will not be participating.
Update: Here’s CNN’s results page. Politico’s carrying the AP results, too.
Update: 9 p.m., polls are closed. Mitt wins, says Brit. CNN concurs. For once I think Hewitt’s spin is sound. If McCain can’t win in an open primary with no Democratic contest to draw away independents, how’s he going to win anywhere else?
Now we wait for the emotional Hugh/Mitt reunion at Romney HQ.
Update: It’s safe to say that Hillary’s lost the black vote. Not just in Michigan, either.
Update: Mitt’s pushing the “change” line in his victory speech now. Tedious.
Update: Don’t look now, but if this trend holds up it’ll be the second consecutive primary where Huckabee hasn’t done any better with evangelicals than his opponents. He’d better turn that around fast in SC or he’s finished.

So far today I’ve had to endure McCain saying ANWAR is out and Huckabee say he wants to substitute the Bible for the US Constitution.

Spirit of 1776 on January 15, 2008 at 8:32 PM
Why does a guy who is leading in the delegate race and has finished no lower than second place need to be resurrected?
If he wins in Michigan Romney will have two first place finishes and two second place finishes.
That is considerably better than all the other GOP candidates.

How do you figure?
It means that the phony douchebag remains in the race, thus keeping SC a four-man race rather than a three-man race, and helping ensure that Fred has a poor showing and drops out soon. Thus the eventual GOP nominee will be someone who either (a) will get beaten like a rented mule in the general election, or (b) if elected to the presidency, will spend his term screwing over conservatives.
Yeah. GREAT news. I’m fscking thrilled.

lan astaslem on January 15, 2008 at 8:40 PM
You are delusional. Romney has been positioning himself as the conservative alternative in the race, compared to Huckabee’s Bible-thumping and McCain’s maverick-Republican appeal. With Romney gone, where are his supporters going to end up? McCain, the guy who never met a GOP principle he couldn’t knife in the back? Huckabee?

Paul is gonna beat Fred AGAIN. I did see something about some die hard liberals voting for Paul in protest. They are mistaken, if Paul runs as a third party he will draw votes from the Democrat not the Republican.

Mark Levin endorces Mitt Romney
On Monday’s Mark Levin show, just hours away from the Michigan primary, Mark unapologetically called out the fake, dangerous Republican presidential candidates who have proven to be just as socialist and liberal as any democrat (McCain and Huckabee), and instructed his audience in Michigan to vote for Romney. Conservatives should not take their philosophical direction from power hungry politicians, but should take our direction from America’s founders.

Expectations, mostly. Mitt spent big to “beat Giuliani” in Iowa and New Hampshire, but got beat by candidates with less funds but built-in advantages. Second isn’t terrible, but he had once been leading in each state, giving Huck and McCain “upset” wins.
Since nobody counts Wyoming, this should be Mitt’s first big win. But since he has almost no supporters in the chattering classes, you won’t see the same breathless Big Mo coverage that Huck and McCain got.
It’s all in the spin.
sulla on January 15, 2008 at 8:54 PM
Actually it is. He needed a win in an open primary state, and if the trends hold, he was denied that. McCain is going to have a hard time winning in closed primary states.
