Huckabee: Hey, how about a hiatus on immigration from terrorist states?

A wriggling worm on the hook for all you anti-amnesty true believers out there in the “heartland,” i.e. South Carolina. Think of it as the old joke about the two men being chased by a bear: Huck doesn’t have to be convincing on this issue, he just has to be more convincing than McCain. So here’s your red meat — Tancredoism by way of a guy who thinks illegal-alien residents of Arkansas deserve tuition breaks that U.S. citizens from Alabama don’t. Everyone persuaded? Good. Then it’s … SECOND LOOK AT HUCKABEE!
“Every one of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 came here legally. Our government welcomed them in. Well, there’s a couple of things we’re going to do differently. I say we ought to put a hiatus on people who come here and give them permits if they come from countries that sponsor and harbor terrorists. Let’s say until you get your act in order and we’ll get our act in order.”

So we wont legally allow terrorists in the country but hey who cares about the border ?
William Amos on January 15, 2008 at 5:45 PM
On the say-what-I-need-to-say-to-get-elected scale, Huckabee is right up there with the Clintons. What is it about Arkansas?
MT on January 15, 2008 at 5:45 PM
“Hey, how about I say anything that you agree with so you’ll vote for me. [insert joke here] We can discuss the details later.”
This isn’t the worst idea, just seems odd that all of a sudden, he decided to start talking about this. Maybe he hit up another Holiday Inn Express.
Populism is not conservatism. Populism is telling people what you think they want to hear (i.e., Clintonianism).
someguy on January 15, 2008 at 5:46 PM
I would be more impressed if he actually said the name of the evil country where most or the 19 terrorist murderers came from.
The one that is still financing hate madrases and terrorism.
You know the one that Jorge “ROP” Arbusto is so kissy face with.

Off topic but…
I was just watching Fox News (with Laura Ingraham?) and they ran three or four graphics of “all” of the GOP candidates for prez:
Mitt, Rudy, Huck, and McCain.
No Fred
They ignored him completely.
I think Fox News prefers the Barnes/Kristol Republicanism over Conservatism.
edgehead on January 15, 2008 at 5:47 PM
I’m curious to hear from any of the legal experts on HotAir …
Now that Huckabee has put his campaign promises and his immigration policy in black and white, written clearly on his campaign website, would there be any legal recourse once he’s elected if he fails to carry it out?
Can this not be looked at as a binding contract?
Gregor on January 15, 2008 at 5:47 PM
Should we give them tuition breaks.

MB4 on January 15, 2008 at 5:48 PM
You know, the upside of Huckabee’s shameless populism is that border security and illegal immigration reform are populist positions.
So, Huck’s leftist heart starts him facing left, but his pandering mind turns him right.
Does this mean I believe him? Yeah, actually…kind of. It’s certainly more convincing than McCain’s “I’ve heard you (but it wasn’t ‘amnesty’!)” position, but not nearly as comforting as Romney’s earlier positions or Fred’s earnestness.

My grandfather once told me “when someone tells you what they are going to do, look at what they have done”. When I apply that to the Huckster, I don’t believe a word that comes out of his mouth.

The main state sponsor of terror is Iran. Has there ever been a case of an Iranian national in the U.S. doing dastardly things? I’m sure there have been Iranian-funded and Iranian-inspired terrorists-in-training in America, but those have been American, Lebanese, etc.; generally Iran doesn’t do its own dirty work, and Iranians in America are no threat to the country. I was surprised upon entering grad school about how many Iranians we let into the country, but, after 29 years of Iranians behaving well in America, there’s no reason to think this will change now. In fact, the Iranian-American migration probably accounts for a lot of the goodwill the majority of Iranians have for America. Do we want to turn a pro-American people into an anti-American people to help the immigration credentials of a hollow candidate/president? I don’t think so.

So after Huck withdraws our soldiers from the the ME in the name of humility and prevents anyone from coming here to be influenced by our way of life the ME will be free of American “interference and corrupting influence” and left to the jihadis and their mullahs. Sounds like a winning strategy.
Why not just get better at identifying the terrorists? Seperating the sheep from the wolves requires discernment though and that ain’t exactly Huck’s strong suit.

Of course, those nations will complain to the UN and state that kind of policy is “inhumane”.
So, if Huck is sincere about this statement, delegates to the UN should be banned for allowing terrorists states to exist, what with since they like to meddle in everyone’s bi’ness.

The Pimpernel is nothing but a nosy pest
No, the vicar says the Pimpernel’s a bishop in disguise
Who gives absolution night and day
Stuff and nonsense, don’t you know
He’s a maharajah from Bombay?

I’ve heard he’s fussy with his food
And eats his breakfast in the nude
Is he robust? Or very pale?
At least we know he’s male!

Problem. Here’s the list of countries considered by the U.S. to be state sponsors of terrorism: Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria. A grand total of zero 9/11 hijackers were from one of those five countries.
Of course a grand total of zero of those countries are located in Arkansas, so I guess we can’t expect Huck to know that.

Makes sense – not too many things are irreverible, as in 30 million instant permanent residents (with 30 M more behind them) and nuke attacks. Taxes, etc., can change up and down (but mostly up, I know).
fred5678 on January 15, 2008 at 7:05 PM
Instead of having people pick one issue, how about having them rank them? For me, war on terror and taxation are both big issues, while family values and poverty aren’t.
Same goes for polls of candidates: I like both Mitt and Fred, and am okay with Giuliani, but don’t like McCain and can’t stand Huckabee.
