Video: TO cries after the Boys blow it
posted at 10:10 am on January 14, 2008 by Bryan
Alright Cowboy haters, here’s your moment of zen: TO crying in the post-game press conference after the Cowboys became the first #1 seed since the NFL playoff format was changed in 1990 to lose its playoff opener. The suffering of the world’s most egotistical athlete will bring pleasure to many. If I wasn’t a Cowboy fan, I’d revel in it myself.
The Cowboys can rightly point to very flawed officiating, from the 3rd-down offsides call that led to the Giants’ first TD to the grounding call late in the 4th when Romo wasn’t under duress that pushed them back 10 and cost them a down, but the bottom line is this: The Cowboys had three chances with a short field late in the game when they knew they needed a TD. The defense did its job when the game was on the line but still within reach. But dropped balls, bad play calling and skillet-handed play from Patrick Crayton and several bad reads by Romo cost them the game. One of the league’s most lethal offenses just fell apart against a patchwork Giants secondary. They have no excuse. They won as a team all year, but lost as a team in the playoffs. They choked. It happens, but with this team it’s happened twice in two years.
But at least TO recognizes that Romo is his quarterback and thus doesn’t seem intent to divide the team over a very difficult and shocking loss. Which means there’s always next year.
Update: And don’t get me started on all the missed tackles, from the first drive to the last.

Blowback

p40tiger on January 14, 2008 at 10:18 AM
Romo is still a young quarterback, that was clear. He lost his composure, one. And then you have to give it up for the Giant’s defensive ends, who were all up in his grill every passing down. Michael Strahan was playing like he had a bonus payment on the line and a late alimony payment.
albo on January 14, 2008 at 10:18 AM
Crayton not being on the 2008 Cowboys team would be an improvement.
Hoodlumman on January 14, 2008 at 10:18 AM
Bryan, they did choke as a team, but Romo going on vacation has to be one of the stupidest (legal) things ever done during the playoffs. What the hell was he thinking?

“I’ve always habd my quarterback’s back”?
I wonder if he actually believes that.
sweeper on January 14, 2008 at 10:23 AM
seriously, who here would not go on a vacation with Jessica Simpson if given the opportunity? Especially if you are a guy that would never in a million years have a shot at a woman like her if not for your position as Cowboys QB?
jp on January 14, 2008 at 10:24 AM
Nah, the Packers are going to make the Giants into head cheese–that’s pretty much a lock. The Giants had their super bowl yesterday.

What it boils down to is that a team is affected by the work ethic of its leaders. The Mexican jaunt would have been justifiable, IF they’d shown themselves to be in playoff shape in their last game. They didn’t. The Cowboy offensive line played like ran off to Mexico themselves.
The young goofy kid QB of Dallas still has things to learn from the old goofy kid QB in Green Bay: save the silliness for after winning the key games.
Green Bay has always been my second team since the 70s; their play this weekend shows why. Go Pack!
michaelo on January 14, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Wait a minute. The Chargers were the #1 Seed last year and lost their opening playoff game to the Patriots
TheBigOldDog on January 14, 2008 at 10:31 AM
Hey! Leave TO alone! His crying has liberated all NFL players to be able to show emotion in post game interviews. :-0
Seriously, as a life-long Washington supporter it’s always fun to see Dallas lose (particularly when they were acting like they all but had sewed up the championship!)
highhopes on January 14, 2008 at 10:31 AM
The Cowboys lost but I do think one of the stories of the year is that TO was quiet. He kept his mouth shut for most of the season and stopped being a distraction.
roux on January 14, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Sorry T.O., it’s totally Romo’s fault, just like last year.
SouthernDem on January 14, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Seriously, what TO was actually saying was 100% right — he was saying you cant just blame one guy its a team thing, which is very noble of him — the only problem was that the minute he teared up behind his thick sunglasses it became, once again, ALL ABOUT TO.
Which is, of course, how TO ALWAYS wants it.
And while I bask inthe glory of my G-MEN Beating the hated Cowpokes — which is really our equivalent of the Superbowl — I hasten to add that Eli has won two playoff games in decent weather and now goes up to frigid Green Bay — and we all know how badly Eli has played in cold adverse weather this year.
So whatever happens up in the frozen tundra next week, we Giants fans can bask in this victory over the hated Cowpokes and their buffon owner Jerry Jones FOREVAH BABY !!
Always Right on January 14, 2008 at 10:32 AM
Another shock is that TO actually thought of his team rather than just himself. Has he done an 180?

Jessica may take a run at Eli now. She likes a winner. And, party boy Tony will have to wear that Mexican vacation on his back with a bullseye in the center for a year. Even better than watching T.O. sob, was the look on Jerry Jones’s face after that last interception. America’s team, indeed.

Also, Cowboys peaked at the wrong time, Giants peaking at the right time.

So this allows Farve to officially pass the torch to Brady as the Patroits defeat the Packers in the super bowl. This defeat puts Dallas in a sticky situation because Wade Phillips has always been a band-aid of a coach or best suited as a Coordinator.

For me the signature moment of T.O.s career was the slamming of the ball on the Cowboy Star and the glorious sight of Emmit Smith, creaming him. Just as with the St.Louis Cardinals, years ago, going to the dark side by hiring LaRussa, the signing of T.O.(by the Parcel regime?)to me constitutes a complete betrayal of the Cowboy tradition. Now to see the baby cry. Cowboy management and ownership deserves this embarrassment and frankly much more.
As I have never been a Cowboy fan, am I right to infer that the hiring of the carpet bagger Parcels was a betrayal of Cowboy tradition as well?
Nyog_of_the_Bog on January 14, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Yoko Romo? You owe me a new monitor.
Romo lost the playoff game AGAIN!! Love it.
Darksean on January 14, 2008 at 10:41 AM
GO GIANTS!! The best thing about this win is that it should give Manning the confidence he’s always needed. Even if the Giants lose in Green Bay (and I ain’t saying that…keeping my fingers very tightly crossed), the Giants can hopefully carry over their confidence from this year to another great season next year.
Yossarian on January 14, 2008 at 10:41 AM
As an Eagles fan, I didn’t care who won that game because I hate both teams. It would be like asking if I’d prefer that Hitler or Hussein win a contest. I like the whining that the Cowboys are doing though, instead of taking responsibility for not being prepared for an inferior team.
RWLA on January 14, 2008 at 10:41 AM
As a Cowboys fan, the least you could do is post a picture of Jessica Simpson in a bikini to ease our pain. You know, like This one.
lodestonejames on January 14, 2008 at 10:42 AM
Not to mention the O-line. Geeze, talk about missing the pass rush! And then when they needed 5 yards for the first, it was as if the line drew straws to see who would get the false start flag. It was just sloppy for the Cowboys last night.
Weight of Glory on January 14, 2008 at 10:42 AM
T.O. *should* be crying. He couldn’t catch a darned thing yesterday.
sarahk on January 14, 2008 at 10:45 AM
I’m glad to see the Cowboy fans blaming the team. Some times they act like Yankee fans. They think every game is their win and the only reason they lose is because they were cheated by the other team or the officials.
csdeven on January 14, 2008 at 10:46 AM
He’s pulling a Hillary!
Don’t buy it because in a few days he’ll be back to his old ‘self ripping on teammates and complaining about how they never throw the ball to him…

I can’t wait for the Packers/Giants game. I think it’s an evening game on a day when the raw temperature isn’t supposed to crack double digits. It’s gonna be brutal.
And from this Packers fan, all I have to say to the Giants is “thank you” and “welcome!”

While I’m not into big boyz crying, T. O. is for the first time showing he is growing up. He was always the one to blame his former quarterbacks for his problems.
Now that it’s the g-men’s chance: Go Giants!
(Marion Barber is a good person and a great football player)
Captain America on January 14, 2008 at 10:58 AM
If only TO could have behaved that way in Philly he’d have at least one more ring by now.
Definitely a team loss but I agree with the above posters that a team leader (that wants to win it all) doesn’t take a vacation in the middle of the playoffs.

LtE126 on January 14, 2008 at 11:01 AM
I’m sure Jerry Jones is feeling better now that TO has gone before the press and cried like a baby.
Cowgirls came in flat, Giants were on a roll. It was over when Toomer ran through three Dallas tacklers with girlie-arms on his way to the first Giants touchdown.
I haven’t seen anyone in the playoffs who has the talent and depth to beat the Pats. They play at a different level than the rest of the NFL. It’s a lock, 19-0, but I’ll be cheering for Favre to pull off a miracle.

SouthernDem on January 14, 2008 at 11:03 AM
The officiating was bad ? What about the two touchdowns Dallas didn’t score? TO was out of bounds and Barber’s knee was down before before the ball crossed the goal line. How about the two times the offensive tackle jumped offsides and they weren’t called. Besides it was painful enough listening to Troy boy telling us how the Giants were going to loose even though they had the lead and were in control. The NFL needs to tell the networks not to let ex-players call games for teams they used to play for. The best part was at the end when Troy boy was speechless after the interception. Priceless!!

Yeah, I dunno if they necessarily understand that they’re bona fide screwed right now for having to go to Green Bay in January…that’s just a nightmare. And please, re: the officiating. Don’t forget the rinky-dink calls (and the non-calls) AGAINST the Giants. It goes both ways….
But, even with my thanks for beating those stars, GO PACKERS! And, like LtE126, this from a Bears fan!
dish on January 14, 2008 at 11:10 AM
Astonishing. TO backs his quarterback and says the loss was as a team. Certainly that’s true. The O line faltered at the end, the D faltered at the end of the 1st half, WR play, esp Creighton was poor. Romo played poor, and more importantly NY forced him out his game plan and his composure. Romo’s intentional grounding was emblematic of his play. But for TO to say that, I’m surprised. Maybe Phillips really has turned those guys into a team.
As a story line goes though, it’s neat to see Brett back in the NFC c.game and with NY playing in GB, a legit shot at another Superbowl appearance.
Spirit of 1776 on January 14, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Apparently I was wrong. Some how I remembered it as Emmit Smith, but the announcer in this vid refers to George Teague. Who ever he is, (I’m not a Cowboys fan), God bless him!

I’m an Eagles fan, unfortunately, and hence not very fond of the Cowboys. That being said, I like Aiken as a broadcaster, he’s articulate and brings knowledge of the game to his color commentary. I didn’t think he was rooting for the Comboys, in fact I had commented to a friend during the game about how fair I thought he was.

It’s not much different than their home conditions. I don’t understand why Packer fans have this idea that there’s is the only stadium with tough weather conditions in January. The forecast low for the AFC Championship game is 8 degrees while Green Bay is 5 degrees. Not much different. Giant Stadium is about 170 miles from Gillette Stadium. Giant stadium has the reputation of being one of the toughest stadiums to play in in the NFL due to near constant windy conditions.

It’s not much different than their home conditions. I don’t understand why Packer fans have this idea that there’s is the only stadium with tough weather conditions in January.
I’m a Giants fan and live in Jersey, and I have to tell you that playing in 8 degrees is not going to be a picnic for the Giants. It rarely gets that cold here, and there’s a big difference in playing a game in the 20′s versus the single digits.
And Eli has proven to be a disaster in nasty weather. I think the Packers are not as good as Dallas, but I think we’re going to have a problem with the weather. If you’re a Giant fan, do you remember what happened in ’85 when the Giants went to Chicago to play the Bears!

Love the Packers. Love Wisconsin, period (Summerfest, the best). They’re my alternate team (Bears first of course). The only reason Favre is so hated down here is ’cause we don’t have him. Not a Cowboy lover or hater, but have and observation. All season long, it just seemd like this particular Cowboy team, even when they were winning, just lacked that certain, confident swagger that the best Cowboy teams of the 70′s and 90′s had. I was only mildly surprised that they lost, as they just didn’t seem to have a ton of confidence, and it showed in the way they played and in all they mistake they made (especially the ridiculous number of penalties).
thirteen28 on January 14, 2008 at 12:23 PM
He’ll win New Hampshire for sure now!
SouthernGent on January 14, 2008 at 12:30 PM
Nobody was going to beat the Bears that year. I’ve been to several Giants playoffs game where it was around 5 degrees. Sure, it’ll be cold in GB, but at this point, you can’t let the weather have an effect on you.
A banged up secondary is another story…
JammieWearingFool on January 14, 2008 at 12:32 PM
As to reasons why they lost, don’t forget to add that the Cowboys had some of the WORST time/clock management I’ve seen in a long time. Did they even KNOW that they were in the final two minutes of the game last night? You wouldn’t know it from the play calling; run up the middle, short pass up the middle, lollygagging back to the line for the next play, etc. Pitiful. That’s what you do when you’re AHEAD and trying to run out the clock, not when you’re BEHIND and trying to score. Ugh.
Midas on January 14, 2008 at 12:33 PM
Right now I’m swimmin’ in the schadenfreude with my fellow Giant fans…(And have a daughter wearing a Tom Brady Jersey who can be turned up to full growl just by saying the words “Eighteen and ONE”). Yesterday wasn’t a perfect win, but having the Giants send Dallas home in any form will do for now.
But there’s a real problem to deal with here . . . The abject stupidity of the league office when it comes to bending things to suit the TV ratings. I think the NFL setting the NFC Championship game time for 6PM EST is a real joke. Everyone was so confident the game was going to be in Dallas, due to the through-the-playoff home field advantage they held, that now the fans of Green Bay are stuck with a NIGHT GAME at LAMBEAU FIELD in JANUARY. The forecast a week ahead of the game says things are going to be bad, but they’re one Alberta Clipper away from things getting a hell of a lot worse. You can romanticize the “Ice Bowl” all you want, but playing in it and watching a game in it in the dark isn’t the best idea the chuckleheads at the NFL could come up with.
52Ranger on January 14, 2008 at 12:34 PM
You might want to put some ice on that, Bryan…
I feel you paiyun (not really).
The Cowboys were just too cocky, too sure they were going to Green Bay. I am not a die-hard Giants fan, by any stretch, but the Cowboys had to lose, after their drama-filled off week. The story-line demanded it.
I am just glad this was not the last game in the old Stadium. That legendary field deserves to go out with a win.
