New post-debate SC poll shows Fred in with a bullet at … fourth; Video: New Fred ad airs in South Carolina

The first survey since his bravura debate performance last week. I was worried it would show him in the lead and our commenters who’ve been sniffing that polls don’t matter and are always wrong would have to revisit their assessment. Whew!
But say this much for ol’ Fred. If the only thing he accomplishes in this campaign is to derail Huckamania, he’ll have accomplished much. There are worse things to be than a de facto stalking horse:
Over the past several days, the only real movement in South Carolina’s Republican Presidential Primary has been a four-point gain for Fred Thompson and a five-point decline for Mike Huckabee.
The big winner from that trade-off is John McCain.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows McCain at 28%, Huckabee at 19%, Mitt Romney at 17%, and Fred Thompson at 16%. Rudy Giuliani and Ron Paul are tied with 5% support. Giuliani is betting his entire campaign on a strong showing in Florida, where he is now tied for the lead with three others.
He’s losing ground in the Gallup national poll too. Best-case scenarios tomorrow: A close Romney win splitting the field or a disastrous Romney loss, driving Mitt from the race and leaving Fred to pick up his supporters. Worst-case scenario: Anything else. It’s also worth noting that first place and fourth place in Florida right now are separated by two points. Too bad Fred’s in fifth. Oh well — by the time we get there, things will have shaken out anyhow.
Update: Fredporn!

True dat. I’m done. What a shameful excuse for a human that Harald is.
HebrewToYou on January 14, 2008 at 7:00 PM
I hate to say it, but that is true.
At least with a liberal Dim, the GOP in Congress don’t have to keep up a false pretense of party unity. They can fight with both barrels.
SimplyKimberly on January 14, 2008 at 7:01 PM
Actually it’s doom either way. Amnesty = permanent democratic majority = doom.
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 7:04 PM
Igor, amnesty still has to pass through the legislature. There’s no guarantee that the Dems will maintain their grasp there.
HebrewToYou on January 14, 2008 at 7:07 PM
Everyone who’s familiar with his record and his blatant dishonesty talking about it questions his integrity and honesty. Parolees, tax increases, illegal immigration- he either lied or misrepresented his record on all of these.
Anyone suggesting that he’s run an honest campaign are themselves either lying or simply ignorant. Which are you?
Hollowpoint on January 14, 2008 at 7:11 PM
I’ve considered that. There are even articles out there with similar reasoning. But eight years is a long time and Soros has a proven record of changing governments.

and the TOOL of the week winner is??
stlpatriot on January 14, 2008 at 7:11 PM
Hussein Obama is a muslim plant not a sincere democrat!
You can’t get any worse than that.
I remember O’Reilly did a story on GE/NBC still doing business with terrorist Iran and the Bin Laden family recently..it didn’t get enough coverage and O’Reilly neglected to get to the real point.. The real point is that the saudi muslim nazi’s have been buying up controlling interests in all of the major media companies lately.
Look, if you buy 20% of a public company you’re generally the largest owner and if you chose, you could threaten to sell all of your stock at a huge discount and bring the stock price to the gutter, forcing the founders and owners to lose billions and billions overnight! If you get all of your money from oil sales what does it matter to you?
The point is they are blackmailing the major media into covering stories about muslims in favorable light or not covering covering stories at all and guess what?? Hussein Obama is their favored candidate! Followed by Hildebeast.
HaraldHardrada on January 14, 2008 at 7:11 PM
Headline: McCain leads, but only three percentage points separate Huckabee, Romney, and Thompson.
Things look a bit different from the Iowa days don’t they?
Mojave Mark on January 14, 2008 at 7:14 PM
So why not vote for the man who never panders and never backs down, Fred Thompson? You’ve got to admit, his “virgins” joke was the first such thing you’ve EVER heard on national TV. This man will come to Saudi Arabia with the following proposition: “Today we are doing the letter ‘M’. Pick a city starting with that letter and we’ll see what we can do.”
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 7:15 PM
Just forget about any thoughts of ” I would much rather have four years of liberal Democrat rule over four years of liberal Republican rule. We can recover from the former; we are doomed by the latter”
Guess what happens if that takes place???
We won’t recover at all don’t kid yourselves…these are serious times people and there is way too much at stake.
I don’t know if you’ve noticed but these are the worst democratic candidates ever!
Hillary is owned by China and saudi muslimnazi’s and Hussein Obama is owned by muslim nazi terrorists and george soros! This is a disgrace and a black day in American history!
HaraldHardrada on January 14, 2008 at 7:18 PM
It’s amazing Harald. You see the truth and yet you don’t see the truth. That’s a puzzle, isn’t it?

I don’t buy it.. Fred is a CFR/open borders agenda guy!
HaraldHardrada on January 14, 2008 at 7:21 PM
So Fred built his whole campaign on a major lie but he refuses to act as a tough blowhard that would guarantee him an election?
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 7:26 PM
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 7:26 PM
What do you mean?
HaraldHardrada on January 14, 2008 at 7:31 PM
Harald… I mean I don’t even know where to start. But others have tried so I won’t bother rehashing any of that. Your commenting is so utterly ignorant, not to mention horribly formatted and riddled with poor grammar, that I just can’t shake the opinion that you’re a leftist troll parodying what you imagine conservatives might be like.
The possibility of amnesty getting passed remains low in my book. Conservatives weren’t the only ones up in arms about it, Americans aren’t stupid. I can’t believe that blue-collar, lower-income segments of the population, who might typically vote Democrat, won’t see how detrimental to their economic wellbeing amnesty might be.
The prospect indeed remains frightening, especially the prospect of a permanent Democratic majority. But as long as we can ensure that the American people know whenever Congress might try to slide amnesty legislation through quietly, I remain hopefull that they will vociferously ensure that they make their will to the contrary known.
I agree with the sentiment that Barack would be better for us than Huckabee. He would be a worse leader, but it did take Jimmy Carter to get us Reagan. If a nominal Republican screws us over, all we can guarantee is a Democrat get the chance to do even worse next time. That being the case, I won’t vote for him. He can be as sincere as he likes, but that doesn’t make him right. I’ll simply sit it out.
I realize I’m one of that influx of newly registered members, and I’d agree with what some of the more long term guys have commented on regarding the lowering of the level of discourse. One can only hope the people in question will continue to work their way towards earning the eventual banhammer.
BranBresil on January 14, 2008 at 7:37 PM
What I mean is this. I truly believe that Fred could win South Carolina EASILY if he talked tough for a week, played a part of a type A personality, attacking all the targets opposed to him. He refuses to be non-laid back. For such a major liar, he isn’t lying much when it counts.
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 7:41 PM
Ah, the flipside of the Truther coin.
That open registration couldn’t have had this many trolls, could it?

HaraldHardrada on January 14, 2008 at 7:50 PM
Igor,
That’s exactly why I don’t trust Fred. He’s not attacking Mccain, he’s helping Mccain win. Therefore his talk about being opposed to amnesty is BS!
HaraldHardrada on January 14, 2008 at 7:52 PM
He is not attacking him, but he has pointed out in at least three different setting that I know of that he vehemently disagrees with McCain’s plan. Why he isn’t attacking him at the moment, I don’t know, because I can’t read his mind. Maybe Huck is the key to the Southern vote, maybe Fred is hoping for McCain to turn over his delegates to him after he drops out, maybe McCain is such a dear friend he can’t get himself to do it. Is Huck attacking McCain? Obviously not, and their temporary alliance has been suggested during the Iowa/NH time.
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 7:56 PM
In all honesty the difference between a sincere democrat of today and a muslim plant is pretty much academic anyway.
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 7:57 PM
Gotta say, I’m having to look at hotair.com a lot like the MSM now. It seems I can’t just believe the headlines, I have to actually look at the story.
In the first SC poll since the debate, Fred has moved up 4 points. Yes, he’s still in 4th, but the move is happening. And he is exactly one point behind Romney in 3rd place. That’s truly remarkable progress in a short time.
But from the headline and the first part of this story, I would have thought the poll was devastating news for Fred supporters. Instead, it’s very good. Given the margin of error, Fred is in a statistical tie with Huckabee and Romney.
The race is at that delicate point when all it really takes to kill a candidate is to keep selling the idea that he doesn’t stand a chance. Like it or not, lots of people won’t vote for a candidate if they think he’s going to lose.
That makes sense in the general election, where it’s one or the other of two candidates. It makes sense late in the primary election, when people have to give up their favorite candidates once they realize that candidate just won’t make it. It does not make sense at this early stage, when no front-runner has won more than one state.
After Super Tuesday, the campaign landscape may change dramatically. But until then, I’m betting no candidate drops out.
And Fred is definitely not dropping out before South Carolina, no matter how many [times] fried hats and harry haggards say otherwise.
tom on January 14, 2008 at 8:00 PM
Fred’s site says it’s a statistical tie for 2nd. Fair enough…
SouthernGent on January 14, 2008 at 8:38 PM
all fred has to do to guarantee a conservative wins SC is drop out.
then mitt will win.
IOW: fed is a stalking horse for mccain against mitt.
fred splits the conservative vote and helps mccain.
(huck takes as many from mccain as he does from mitt.)
reliapundit on January 14, 2008 at 8:46 PM
I liked Rudy at first, you know the lesser of two evils. When Fred decided to run he impressed me so much I have switch to Fred. I believe Fred will do better in SC then anyone thinks.

Breaking through the third straight fundraising goal at his website, this one for a million dollars by midnight tonight.

I think this new ad of Fred’s is beautiful. The message, the setting, the music… very Presidential.
I also noticed that the first thing he lists is that he’s against amnesty. I think that’s a jab at you-know-who. Very good.
This has to be my favorite Fred ad so far, loved the end, too. Yes, I’m a FredHead; it doesn’t show, does it? ;)

A new challenge has been issued to every FredHead to donate $10 at 10:00 pm local time.
Not sure if a Red Chevy pickup truck could lift off. Or whether a campaign server could levitate. Sure would like to see it though!

I sent in my $10 early so the server wouldn’t crash at 10:00.
I went to a Fred campaign rally in Simpsonville, SC tonight. The place was already packed an hour before Fred even got there. Those of us who stayed outside were lined up 6 or 7 deep at the restaurant windows just to see Fred. Total crowd was estimated at 400-500 people.
No, Fred’s not dropping out. He’s just getting started.

I’m sure I’m not the 1st to predict this (but I haven’t seen or heard it):
McCain wins the nomination, picks Fred as his VP, & cruises to a landslide win in Nov.
jgapinoy on January 14, 2008 at 11:08 PM
And I predicted that Rudy wouldn’t be the nominee back when he was a sure thing.

I THINK (and hope) That my state Oklahoma votes for him on Feb. 5th(Not that it will matter, just make me feel good). This might make yall feel good though, today in my Government class (In an ACTUAL COLLEGE) the class voted for Fred! I was surprised, I thought I was the only Republican in the class. LOL. Obama came in second though, not sure where that came from. I thought Ron Paul for sure. The single vote that went for Hillary was a woman who had to state before she cast her vote, “It’s not because she is a woman.” LOL. Right.

“If you support Huckabee you are not a Conservative.” – Hebrewforhate
Who the hell are you , Hebrew for hate, to make that decision?
You’re obviously filled with hat…why should anyone take anything you say seriously?
I’m conservative…have been since casting my first presidential vote for Reagan in 1980. I’m 100% behind the good, effective, and CONSERVATIVE Mike Huckabee for POTUS.
Do the letters, KMA mean anything to a hate-filled Hebrew?
