New post-debate SC poll shows Fred in with a bullet at … fourth; Video: New Fred ad airs in South Carolina
posted at 3:24 pm on January 14, 2008 by Allahpundit
The first survey since his bravura debate performance last week. I was worried it would show him in the lead and our commenters who’ve been sniffing that polls don’t matter and are always wrong would have to revisit their assessment. Whew!
But say this much for ol’ Fred. If the only thing he accomplishes in this campaign is to derail Huckamania, he’ll have accomplished much. There are worse things to be than a de facto stalking horse:
Over the past several days, the only real movement in South Carolina’s Republican Presidential Primary has been a four-point gain for Fred Thompson and a five-point decline for Mike Huckabee.
The big winner from that trade-off is John McCain.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows McCain at 28%, Huckabee at 19%, Mitt Romney at 17%, and Fred Thompson at 16%. Rudy Giuliani and Ron Paul are tied with 5% support. Giuliani is betting his entire campaign on a strong showing in Florida, where he is now tied for the lead with three others.
He’s losing ground in the Gallup national poll too. Best-case scenarios tomorrow: A close Romney win splitting the field or a disastrous Romney loss, driving Mitt from the race and leaving Fred to pick up his supporters. Worst-case scenario: Anything else. It’s also worth noting that first place and fourth place in Florida right now are separated by two points. Too bad Fred’s in fifth. Oh well — by the time we get there, things will have shaken out anyhow.
Update: Fredporn!

Very good question. Where will Mitt’s supporters go?
HaraldHardrada on January 14, 2008 at 4:45 PM
There is no way Fred is going to overcome McCain’s lead unless McCain converts to Islam.
bnelson44 on January 14, 2008 at 4:47 PM
Thanks, you’re a good sport. I screwed up the delivery with too many “then’s” but I guess it still worked.

Well not to Huck, that’s for sure.
bnelson44 on January 14, 2008 at 4:47 PM
Sorry, but if my choices are either Huckabee or McCain, I am writing in my vote. I won’t vote for either one under any circumstance.
McCain is a liar.
Huckabee is a pro-life, light weight Jimmy Carter wannabe.
I can’t support either one.
SimplyKimberly on January 14, 2008 at 4:48 PM
I think when the smoke clears, it will look more like:
Thompson at 26%
McCain at 21%,
Huckabee at 16%,
Romney at 13%, and

You have it backwards- if one is to vote for the lesser of two evils, Huckster comes out on the losing end. The only justification I could see for voting McCain would be to beat the Huckster.

Huck is a bigger liar than McCain. McCain denies the obvious, like an alcoholic denying his addiction (yeah, it’s not amnesty) and Huck purposefully twists and finesses his record.
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 4:51 PM
The reason why I don’t like John McCain are too many to list here, his age being the least of those reasons.
The main reason I dislike him is he isn’t a Republican.

Fred Thompson or Fred Durst? lolololol
froghat on January 14, 2008 at 4:53 PM

Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 4:53 PM
Do McShamnesty and the Huckster go after each other at all?
Darksean on January 14, 2008 at 4:53 PM
Best case scenario for Fred is that the bidding for ANYONE-BUT-JOHN opens up, and that he can stand up as the candidate with the momentum and the best chance of re-uniting the Reagan coalition. In that case, Rudy’s last gasp in Florida might sap John’s strength at a key moment for the centrists (aka RINOs).
For that reason the only MI results that would really be harmful to Fred would be stronger-than-expected Huckabee and Mitt finishes that powerfully boost both of their campaigns, attracting too many of the voters and donors that Fred needs. A strong John finish in MI and limp results for Mitt and Mike might be just what Fred needs.
If and only if Fred finishes very strongly in SC, then he’ll at least get some “Is Fred Maybe Alive After All?” stories, along with whatever gaggle of headlines he can group together: A fundraising spike, movement in nationwide and other polls, maybe another strong debate performance in L.A. this month. If a strong up-the-middle result in Florida follows, that would make him the story going into Superduper Tuesday, with disappointments in other campaigns (even if one of them ekes out a victory) as sidebars.
Likely? I can’t quite say I think so. Possible? Why not?
CK MacLeod on January 14, 2008 at 4:54 PM
Exactly. At least McCain admits he agreed with the bill before he started claiming he didn’t. Huckster claims he was against it all along, when he clearly wasn’t.

I wish you were right about Graham losing, but I can’t see it happening. Most conservatives who are paying attention will not vote for Graham, but too much of the voting public go based on name recognition. The also-rans will have no chance to dent his built-in incumbent advantage.
I’ll probably right in a name, since I swore I would never vote for him again. However, honestly, I really don’t want any of the no-names winning either. They have no experience and would be run over in Washington. I wish it were differently, but it’s not.
That said, the best I can hope for is to see him barely get reelected and have it scare him straight.
wardrobedoor on January 14, 2008 at 4:55 PM
Never. That’s what gives the rise to the McCain/Huck ticket rumors.

Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 4:56 PM
Huck is a snake oil salesmen straight out of some old comedy. I can’t even think of another politician who would lie so casually about easily verifiable things. Hillary lies about her intentions, but that’s a lot harder to prove.
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 4:58 PM
The only reason Fred is down in the polls is because of the obvious bias of the polltakers, and even if they had instead chosen to place Fred in the lead it would only have been an obvious ploy to suppress Fred’s voter turnout! You can’t win no matter who you are, Allahpundit! Heh heh heh heh heh… (In the voice of Ace Ventura, from the opening scene on the cliff in When Nature Calls.)
Seriously though, even if Fred were in the lead I would still worry the polls are wrong. I used to do some day trading so I understand how difficult it is to predict the future based on analysis of historical data. It’s not exactly the same thing, but there are some similarities.

HaraldHardrada on January 14, 2008 at 5:00 PM
If Fred does just ONE piece of theatrics demonstrating that he is “passionate” he will win the SC primary by a landslide. People are begging him during his campaign appearances to give them what they want. A leader HAS to give the followers what they want when they are begging for it. That’s how the world works.
Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 5:01 PM

I’m still hoping the conservative base will pull together and think! I dont get it! All they have to do is ask themselves, “who is the most conservative candidate?” Problem solved. Obviously coservatives are scrambling to find the most popular candidate instead of most conservative. This is not brain surgery, although those considering Huckabee or McCain may have some type of brain disfunction. I will be voting Thompson!

Igor R. on January 14, 2008 at 6:30 PM
If you support Huckabee you are not a Conservative. It’s that simple. A vote for him is WORSE than a vote for a Democrat. At least four years of liberal Democratic rule can be blamed on their party. Four years of liberal Republican rule will doom the GOP.
Anti-Huckabee folks actually bring up substantial issues, such as the fact that he worked to elect Democrats. You just make bigoted remarks about people you don’t know much about. I think that says a lot about you.
