By seeing journalism as a means to “further the democratic process,” Burke saw her previous vocation as a political activity.

Regardless of what you think of the quality of the implementation, the theory of a free press exercising First Amendment rights by pursuing and reporting facts is a furtherance of the democratic process. Informing the electorate furthers the process. You're looking for a gotcha where there is none.

it’s in the fact that the ACLU often uses the courts not to further the democratic process, but to destroy it.

First GOP candidate that charges the ACLU with sin, wins.

Before Terri Burke just tried to influence activist Judges, now she can cavort with them directly.

Ahem, no, Journalism is more about opinion, and has been going that way for quite a while. Reporters are few and far between.

You know how politicians resign saying they want to spend more time with their family? This is probably just a fig leaf. She knows newspapers are doomed. And she knows the ACLU's checks don't bounce. And, being a liberal, she needs to feel that what she's doing is for the sake of the poor and oppressed. I think it's ill advised to precipitously accuse a reporter of honesty.

Burke said her new job seems like a continuation of her work in the newspaper business.

That statement is dripping with irony. There are so many ways we could interpret, and they're all probably correct.
