Video: Hillary Clinton learns what it’s like to be a Republican on MTP Update: Hillary claims credit for the surge success; Clinton ally alludes to Obama’s past drug use

Amusingly, the Politico headlines Hillary Clinton’s Meet the Press interview today “Hillary Clinton attacks Barack Obama.” The headline is somewhat inaccurate, as Clinton spent much of that interview defending herself from some dishonest attacks coming from the left. But it’s not entirely inaccurate, as she does use her defenses to poke holes in Obama’s record, or lack thereof. I guess I just “attacked” him too, by Politico’s way of thinking.

On the basic substance of the racially-tinged brouhaha between the Clinton machine and the Obama campaign, the Clintons have more of the facts on their side. That’s not to say that they are purer than snow or that they have all of the facts on their side. Both campaigns have played identity politics as the race has tightened, with Hillary first playing the girl card after her debacle in the Philadelphia debate and now Obama playing the race card starting a day or two before the New Hampshire primary. And the Clinton campaign has attempted to play the Muslim and drug cards against Obama, gambits that failed and that Hillary lies about in this interview. But on substance, the columnists and commenters who are accusing the Clintons of belittling Martin Luther King or of calling the entire Obama campaign a “fairy tale” are being dishonest. The fact is Obama hasn’t done enough to be able to honestly compare himself to either MLK or JFK, and he has made both comparisons and been given a pass by the press for it. But when the Clinton machine has pointed this out, they’ve been hit hard with racial politics from the Obama camp and its surrogates and waiting allies in the Democrat party. Dishonesty from Bob Herbert and Donna Brazile is nothing new. What is new is that the dishonesty is being directed at the Clintons instead of in their service.

In the interview on Meet the Press today (edited for brevity), Hillary Clinton tries to climb down from the petard from which she dangles. It’s an identity politics petard that she and nearly all Democrats have been wielding against Republicans for decades.

“This is, you know, a, a — an unfortunate story line that the Obama campaign has pushed very successfully. They’ve been putting out talking points. They’ve been making this — they’ve been telling people, in a very selective way, what the facts are.”

Predictably, the Silky One is defending the more dishonest faction and siding with the Obama camp.

“I must say I was troubled recently to see a suggestion that real change that came not through the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, but through a Washington politician,” said Edwards in front of a congregation of nearly 300 people.

“I fundamentally disagree with that. Those who believe that real change starts with Washington politicians have been in Washington too long and are living a fairytale.”

This Democrat infighting will probably leave some lasting rifts in the party, but there’s little about it for Republicans to take any joy in. We can enjoy the bloodletting now but whether the nominee turns out to be Clinton or Obama, or a ticket that includes both, rest assured that identity politics will be the Democrats’ first, second, third and last angle of attack from the convention through the election. And if they don’t win, they’ll denounce America as either being too sexist to elect them or too racist to elect them. Or both.

Update: Hillary also used the MTP interview to claim credit for the success of the troop surge in Iraq. You know, the one that she opposed the whole time.

Update: Questioning whether Obama is qualified to be president isn’t an “attack.” He’s not (and neither is Hillary). But this…this sounds like an attack.

Here is what [BET founder Bob] Johnson said today:

“I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues when Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood that I won’t say what he was doing but he said it in his book.”

When Clinton spokesman Jay Carson was asked about Johnson’s comments, he denied they referred to Obama’s admitted drug use. “That’s not what he was talking about,” he said.

The Clinton campaign’s excuse is that he might have been talking about Obama’s community activities. That doesn’t even pass the laugh out loud test.

Personally, I don’t care what they say about me or us as a party. All they have to run on are personal attacks. They never run on the issues because they know they can’t win if they do. Let them implode upon themselves. The more bloodshed the better.

It’s nothing but complete stupidity and PC-worship to suggest that giving LBJ and Congress due credit for passing the Civil Rights Act belittles Dr. King. MLK inspired change with his speech and actions, and politicians empowered those ideas by passing laws. That’s not racist - that’s indisputable history and the reality of how a democracy functions.

What Edwards is suggesting is akin to saying it belittles Jesus if you give Peter his due credit for forming the Church.

Bingo. At least, that’s what I’ve been saying for months. And most likely Clinton-Obama.

I doubt it will strike home with the Clintons that the tactics they and the rest of the Democrats have been using all these years against the Republicans are now being used against them. I have to admit, though, that I thoroughly enjoy seeing it happen.

That’s why this war of libs-on-libs is so enjoyable…would it not be for this

And if they don’t win, they’ll denounce America as either being too sexist to elect them or too racist to elect them. Or both.

…though, I wouldn’t worry what they’d believe, so long as socialism would have the brakes put on.

The Clintons must be insanely furious that Obama entered this race because it made the coronation evitable.

Entelechy on January 13, 2008 at 5:24 PM

What this means is that Obama and Hillary will never appear on the same ticket now.

Hillary will have to have a black on her ticket to appease the Obama camp and Obama will have to have an ex clintonite on his ticket to please her.

MIAMI — While other Republican candidates try to draw momentum with South Carolina and Michigan primary wins, Rudy Giuliani is bathing in the warmth of strong turnouts in Florida.

In a testament to the investment he’s made in this state, Giuliani’s average crowd size has doubled, even quadrupled since he arrived.

Since we can only put on of these heroes into office, we’re either going to be racist or sexist. If only Angela Davis were still running.

I can’t keep trace of the deck: race card, girl card, Muslim card, drug card, green card…. There are too many cards!!!

His hair is greyer and his features are more rounded but Dr Hasnat Khan’s affection for Diana, Princess of Wales, remains undiminished by the passing of more than a decade.

The heart surgeon the late Princess described as “Mr Wonderful” is sitting on a sea-green sofa at his home in Pakistan.

Obama’s supposedly super-lib mother took up with 2 different men who both came from very traditional, misogynistic cultures.

Now we have Britney Spears having a new muslim “boyfriend.”

Clinton is convinced that her opponent will be eviscerated by the Republican attack machine should he win the Democratic presidential nomination. That, at any rate, is her camp’s excuse for doing everything it can to discredit him behind the scenes. The battle to tear down Obama and his claim to represent “hope” has begun.
- Timesonline

Hillary is so kind. She thinks that bad evil Republicans will hang poor little Obama with a stiff rope so she is going to euthanize him by hanging him with a soft rope before they can get their cruel hands on him.

I’m afraid I don’t entirely agree with Bryan, especially in light of the BET guy’s drug and uncle Tom insinuations, but this statement of Hillary’s sort of illustrates her disingenuous whisper campaign, always accuse your opponent of engaging in your dirty tactics…otherwise, why is politicking where Hillary is concerned consist of a shadowy “conspiracy”?

I’m sorry, but how does Barack Obama even come *close* to MLK or JFK? What has he done or accomplished along the lines of what those two have accomplished? Yes, he’s calling for change like both of those men did (albeit in a much more vague, rhetorical way) but has he brought “change” anywhere? When MLK spoke of change, he spoke of ending the racial divisiveness that was tearing the country apart. When JFK called for change, he said he wanted a man on the moon by the end of 60s and he wanted American kids to learn more science and math. Barack just says “Yes we can!”….ok…can what exactly??? Those two are American icons, and you’re right, the media hasn’t questioned that at all. It’s mind-boggling. I mean, when it comes to conservatives, they question if Fred Thompson even “wants to be in the race”. But Barack gets to align himself with two of our greatest icons. Ooooooookay.

MIKE HUCKABEE IS AN ABERRATION.

….As I explain below, why the aberration even exists, it becomes very obvious why he is not leading in the national polls anymore.

The open outcry Iowa caucus, tweaked the results and gave him the boost that followed with a lead in the national polls……
…..but it also explains why it didn’t follow up in NH (less evangelical votes notwithstanding).

“Hoist with his own petar” - Shakespeare, (Hamlet)

A petar or petard is an explosive device, used in the medieval warfare, to breach structural defenses. One can not dangle from a petar. One can however be sploded but good. Thus, “Hoist with his own petar” refers to being hoist (into the air) i.e. blown up by ones own device. Undone by ones own machinations.

It is not a spear or pole to hung from.

I just don’t understand it. Why are they going after him on his drug use, when they can easily go after him on his association with radical Islamic groups like Nation of Islam and Islamists like W. Deen Mohammad and Louis Farrakhan? The facts are all out there.

They are they okay with going after him about something superficial like drug use, but will not call him out for association with radical Islamic groups? Do they think exposing those facts would backfire somehow?

Two comments of her’s that were really odd:

Number one, the Levin amendment, in my view, gave the Security Council of the United Nations a veto over American presidential power.

Good to know she thinks the UN has a hand in runniung this country. The other was:

Now, if we put in 30,000 of our finest young men and women, who are going to go after the bad guys and quell violence in certain parts of Iraq, there’s no doubt that can be done.

A Huckabee win would be a huge loss for the conservative base…

Huckabee, meanwhile, is nearly the philosophical opposite. He would even use his power as president to push for a national ban on public smoking. “I’m one of the few Republicans,” Huckabee insists, “who talk very clearly about the environment, health care, infrastructure, energy independence. I don’t cede any of those to the Democrats.”

Entelechy on January 13, 2008 at 6:48 PM

No, no, he was addressing me directly.

Stick around for awhile. I am literally on the edge of my seat awaiting his reply. Fun, no?

I don’t follow the polls because at this point they mean nothing. I didn’t even follow/believe them in Nov. of ‘04. Also, his honesty is relevant - he is honestly a liberal conservative, and doesn’t shy away from it. Get that! I can’t stomach what he stands for. It goes against my every fiber.

It’s what Mr. Huckabee stands for. Once exposed, the conservatives and independents will not vote for him. He’s just a Jimmy Carter in a different outfit. They won’t vote for Hillary/Obama either, many, but one of them will win if Huckabee is the nominee. I’m done with this because it’s only good for increased number of comments on this HA thread. Be well and it’s a free country - you can stand your ground, and be free to lose in the end.

Entelechy on January 13, 2008 at 6:54 PM

The reason why is your continuous bashing of Christians and claiming all evangelicals are morons.

HaraldHardrada on January 13, 2008 at 6:52 PM

Ah, yes.

Mr. Harrarr… Harrr… Hrrrfffrrr… (channeling Steve Martin in “The Man With Two Brains,” but I digress), please tell me where I have ever said a single thing that could be construed specifically as:

1) continuous bashing of Christians, and/or
2) claiming all evangelicals are morons.

Now, you must find a specific example, or you must retract the accusation. Fair enough?

Entelechy on January 13, 2008 at 6:54 PM

Like what?

His pro gun stance?

His anti amnesty stance?

His pro energy independence?

His no tax raise pledge?

His commitment to bombing iran’s nuclear facilities?

Or his pro israel stance and opposition to a palestinian terror state?

Maybe his plans on getting rid of the socialist income tax?

Are you talking about Obama, because if you are you REALLY have to hook me up with whatever it is you are smoking.

Nevermind, I see you are talking about Huckabee, now I REALLY REALLY need to know what you are smoking.

Don’t make me search thru previous threads…are you an atheist yes or no? If you are not I may be wrong…but suggesting Christians wear robes and eat locusts and are insane is bad enough a sit is.

I don’t want you to think that I’m chickening out from debating you - all those were hashed and rehashed here ad infinitum, and will continue to be. He’s for anything today that he was against yesterday. I go by his record.

You go for him, and I won’t. End of our conversation. Time will tell, ane again, we’ll be here to remind you.

Entelechy on January 13, 2008 at 7:02 PM

oops as it is

HaraldHardrada on January 13, 2008 at 7:03 PM

Again…a vote for Fred, romney or rudy is a vote for Mccain!

HaraldHardrada on January 13, 2008 at 7:05 PM

Ther is a difference between being a governor of a state with a state constitution that forbids deficit spending and being President of the United States.

what else you got? the pardons?

Big deal he received requests for tens of thousands of pardons and did not pardon the vast majority of them and he did execute many criminals.

The “dirt” on Huckabee is ridiculous and tiny compared to everyone else!

HaraldHardrada on January 13, 2008 at 7:10 PM

@ HaraldHardrada on January 13, 2008 at 7:05 PM

Then a vote for McCain is a vote for Huckabee? But then a vote for Huckabee is a vote for . . . ????

I am quite proud to be a Christian, thank you, but I am fed up with the demagoguery and obfuscations from the likes of you and the rest of the Huckleberry Hound fan club. It gives Christianity a very, very bad name.

This election is not about your faith vs. mine, nor anyone else’s. It is about positions, issues, and the protection of the United States and our Constitution. Some candidates are very candid re: their stances on issues (Fred). Others? Not so much (Huck).

I read with interest your points about Huck… strong on 2nd amendment, strong on Israel, etc. etc…. very nice, very nice… it looks so bright and shiny!

So let’s spin the wheel, shall we? And… OK! We have a winner! Energy policy. Let’s go to Huck’s website, shall we, and see what he says about energy!

“The first thing I will do as President is send Congress my comprehensive plan for energy independence. We will achieve energy independence by the end of my second term.

Second term? (slaps forehead) Very bold! Very bold indeed. But have you actually read that entire page?

Please do. Now. It will take you all of two or three minutes. There’s nothing there! It’s all very slick and leaves you smiling, but there is nothing there!

If you can find a single detail about Huck’s “energy plan,” please report back immediately.

wccawa on January 13, 2008 at 7:13 PM

The HillBill cabal still refuses to learn their lesson.
They just can’t seem to grasp that the racist, demagoguing party they love and cultivate to be just that way will not allow them to attack a young black candidate and that they just aren’t Gods after all.

Speakup on January 13, 2008 at 7:13 PM

@ HaraldHardrada on January 13, 2008 at 7:10 PM

How about the fact that he has stated he wants to “take back the country for jesus” and that anyone who isn’t religious is an “evildoer”?? Want to explain to me why I should support a person that views me as evil because I am an atheist? Also, he is for teacher led prayer in schools. If you look at his record, he is for and against almost every issue. He makes so many contradictory statements its mind boggling. Take his stance on drug use:

More drug courts & rehab, instead of incarceration
Drug education fails; drug punishment works
Supports drug courts for non-violent drug offendors
Stricter penalties for drug-related crimes
Treatment for drug use instead of incarceration
More federal funding for all aspects of Drug War

Those are his positions. So he wants drug courts, but more penalties for drug related crimes, but wants treatment instead of punishment for those crimes, but wants more funding for the drug war, but thinks drug education has failed and wants more punishment because he thinks it works.

WHAT??????????????????????

Huckabee supports liquifing coal to oil, supports domestic drilling, supports all bio fuels and supports mandating gov’t purchases of bio fuels for all gov’t’s fuels uses.

That will work

HaraldHardrada on January 13, 2008 at 7:22 PM

Shoot, I don’t care if someone is a Baptist, Methodist, Atheist, Shintoist, Muslim (Ok, Houston we have a problem there)…

It’s the POLICIES. It’s the RECORD. It’s the ISSUES. It’s what the person would do as the highest elected office in our land.

You offer me a budding theocracy? No thanks.

Give me a Federalist any day of the week. Any day.
