Shock poll: Mitt leads McCain by eight in Michigan?

posted at 1:30 pm on January 13, 2008 by Allahpundit

No foolin’. That’s not the only new poll showing him with a little breathing room either, although two other new ones have Maverick clinging to a one-point lead. Good news or bad news for Fred? A disaster in Michigan might have led Romney to drop out, with his SC supporters naturally gravitating to Thompson, but since a disaster was never very likely and a close second probably would be enough to keep him in the race, a Mitt victory that stops McCain cold is probably the second-best outcome for Fredheads. Having Huck, Mac, and Mitt split the first three primaries neutralizes the momentum for all of them and lowers the threshold needed for an upset in South Carolina. And since Mitt won’t be running any ads in the state (or will that now change?), his own bounce in SC is likely to be small.

Does it matter? Nah:

Today, all the usual indicators are dismal for Republicans. If that broad assertion seems counterintuitive, produce a counterexample. The adverse indicators include: shifts in voters’ identifications with the two parties (Democrats now 50 percent, Republicans 36 percent); the tendency of independents (they favored Democratic candidates by 18 points in 2006); the fact that Democrats hold a majority of congressional seats in states with 303 electoral votes; the Democrats’ strength and the Republicans’ relative weakness in fundraising; the percentage of Americans who think the country is on the “wrong track”; the Republicans’ enthusiasm deficit relative to Democrats’ embrace of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, one of whom will be nominated.

Below you’ll find a new ad set to start airing today on Fox News and Michigan local stations. It’s standard Romney abortion flip-flop fare, but with a big twist — the group that’s responsible is Republican Majority for Choice. Why are they wasting their money trying to take him down in Michigan when the two alternatives, McCain and Huckabee, are also pro-life? Why not wait until Florida to run it so that Giuliani benefits?

I leave you with George

Gartrip on January 13, 2008 at 1:37 PM

Republican Majority for Choice. Aren’t those the Lincoln Chafee type folks? I think its fair to say that many people who aren’t in support of outlawing abortion wouldn’t “wish to be labeled pro-choice”. This was the position Mitt took until about 2001, before he was morally opposed, while preserving its legality. In 2001, he did some personal introspection and changed his position on legality. From what I understand, Romney only changed his position once in regards to abortion. He is allowed to do that and pro-lifers should welcome anybody with open arms.

malan89 on January 13, 2008 at 1:38 PM

Man not to be so negative but, we are gonna get steamrolled. With McCain maybe it’s a lighter steamroller, but still.

Hopefully I’m wrong and the party comes together after this haphazard primary but meh…

The only strategy that can possibly win for Republicans is to nominate either Fred or Mitt (Hunter as VP??) and pound on illegal immigration, which can unite the majority of both Democrats and Republicans – but only if we frame the discussion in terms of amnesty REWARDS for illegal aliens.

See the Zogby poll, which is the only poll that offers all three choices – instead of Bush, McCain, Kennedy, et al: “You can’t deport 12 million undocumented (sic) workers, THEREFORE (sic) we have to give them citizenship.” Attrition by enforcement-only is WORKING.

The republican race won’t be any where near determined, until after Super Tuesday if even then. Rudy isn’t out, no one is, but Paul. A brokered convention is a distinct possibility. Win or lose, this election, first and foremost is about the future of Conservatism and the heart and soul of the Republican Party.

Nyog_of_the_Bog on January 13, 2008 at 1:46 PM

New York conservative party will endorce Fred! IF he breaks out in SC. Channel 4 (wnbc) interview.

P. James Moriarty on January 13, 2008 at 1:48 PM

I would rather lose with Mitt, Fred!, or Rudy than win with McCain or Huckleberry.

Why? Because if either of those idiots win it will spell disaster for conservatives for decades. The nomination of Huck or McCain would be a desertion of the principles that have held the Republican party together for thirty years.

Jeff_McAwesome on January 13, 2008 at 1:49 PM

McCain and Hickabee are RINOS. Their time at the head of the pack is limited. Michigan will start the erosion process.

Fred is the Ron Paul of mainstream conservatism. The heads believe he can win, despite all evidence to the contrary. Just like the ronulans, they believe in the media blackout. They believe the polls are flawed and online polls reliable. They believe in his beliefs; despite the fact that his campaign is not run very well. Etc Etc Etc. The similarities are quite striking.

Fredheads need to wake up. He isn’t going to be the nominee; he’s running for VP. Rudy/Fred would be a perfectly acceptable ticket.

lorien1973 on January 13, 2008 at 2:03 PM

The Nightmare Scenario of forcing Republicans to choose between McCain and Huckabee looks like it might be averted. Might….

If Mitt wins in Michigan and Fred does better than McCain in South Carolina (a definite possibility as Fred surges and McCain comes off a Michigan loss), then McCain might be knocked out by this time next week.

If Fred goes so far as to beat both McCain AND Huckabee, then what justification does Huckabee have for continuing? He will crater in Florida and be done by Super Duper Uber Tuesday.

So, we Huckabee haters and McCain loathers should all be hoping for a Mitt win in Michigan and Fred win in S.C. We can sort the rest out later….

funky chicken on January 13, 2008 at 2:18 PM

I’m telling you, Mitt governed the bluest of blue states and all of the criticism laid at him so far has either been debunked or taken out of context.

1. Healthcare in MA: read what Heritage has to say about that: http://www.heritage.org/Research/HealthCare/wm1045.cfm

2. “Promise them anything” – the way I hear it he was just joking around…here’s a quote from someone who supposedly watched the webcast live:

Context Context Context by Mensch

I actually happened to be watching a webcast on his campaign website and saw that quote uttered live. In actuality, those words were said tongue in cheek — Romney chuckled and paused while everyone else chuckled — and were not meant seriously.

Now which makes more sense? Why believe the MSM and not the supposed webcast watcher? Until we see him say it live, I’m giving Mitt the benefit of the doubt.

3. He flipped on abortion, that’s a good thing, duh!!! If he went back and forth, that would be different, but he didn’t “flip flop” which is the mark of a liar, he flipped, which is someone changing their mind.

YES WE ALL WANT FRED – but Fred isn’t running an effective campaign, he’s got the best message and the best record but he’s not getting his message out, so that is a preview of the problems he would have governing. He doesn’t grab an opportunity when it presents itself, which politicians HAVE to do to govern effectively.

Why would ANY conservative support McCain or the Huckster, who HAVE ALREADY BETRAYED us? Mitt has not betrayed us…he is the man for the job.

The fact that the MSM is against Mitt should resolve any and all doubt that we have that he would be great for the conservative movement.

If McCain or the Huckster get the nomination, we then get the crappy gov’t that we deserve.

BTW, a serial rapist who has been terrorizing families in Chandler, AZ (a suburb of Phoenix) for the past year has finally been caught. This criminal was stalking young girls (ages 12-15), and watching their family homes. When the adults were gone and the girls were home alone, he would break in and rape the girl. Fox News (online) is now reportng that the suspect is an ILLEGAL ALIEN who was living and working in the Phoenix area, after having been TWICE DEPORTED from the U.S.

William Amos on January 13, 2008 at 2:26 PM

It’s obligatory

The dirty secret is it is hard to accurately poll a primary. The unpredictability of who will turn out and what the mix of voters will be makes polling a primary election like reading chicken entrails — ugly, smelly and not very enlightening. Our media culture endows polls — especially exit polls — with scientific precision they simply don’t have.

Yeah, sure.

I don’t see how, as long as McCain can walk from point A to point B (ie, is breathing), he will ever stop trying to destroy both the conservative movement and our beloved constitutional freedoms, like our freedom of core political speech, border security, etc. As many have observed over the past twenty years or so – there is something VERY WRONG with him; something strange that will certainly come out in a full election cycle.

Besides, like a hyperactive puppy, the MSM keeps on digging him up each time we conservatives have finally finished burying him (figuratively, of course). The MSM loves McCain and his “BS Express” , simply because 1- they know that he will destroy us, politically. And 2- that they have the goods on him to do it.

I’m not all together certain that it makes much of a difference any more. They are all the same – republicans and democrats – with the exception of Fred.

I thought we all learned the vast majority of polls are complete BS and stopped paying attention to them after both Iowa and New Hampshire!

Isn’t it obvious that pollsters have agenda’s and considering that nowadays polls influence policies pollsters have all the more reason to cheat and lie and have way too much power with no regulation whatsoever.

HaraldHardrada on January 13, 2008 at 4:08 PM

Anybody who supports a candidate other then Fred in this election is a moron. It’s that simple. The differences are not subtle.

You’re right, the differences aren’t subtle.

malan89 on January 13, 2008 at 4:10 PM

This SOB could’ve bee a potential Huckabee clemency candidate:

Blaming the voters is like blaming the messenger, and just could be called, “moronic”.

Buy Danish on January 13, 2008 at 4:00 PM

That’s one of the most idiotic statements I’ve ever heard and it actually supports my claim that we have way too many morons running around.

Maybe you’re not aware of how an election works. You see, the voters actually decide who wins or loses. Pretty simple concept.

Unless you believe it’s all fixed of course, which I’m not going to say that isn’t a possibility.

It’s the same poll. I just copied the java script you had onto my blog.

With Mike Huckabee being the aberration that he is……..

So.. this all boils down to the following conclusion: Mike Huckabee is an aberration. Let me explain what I mean and how that came to be……

……I have left him out of this poll so that we can truly vote for our favorite republican candidate.

Mcguyver on January 13, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Fred did nothing to earn the votes of conservatives.

Buy Danish on January 13, 2008 at 4:00 PM

Nothing? You mean like being the only conservative candidate running for the GOP nomination?

I guess you believe the other candidates constant lying, manipulating reality, and flipping off conservative voters is “earning conservative votes.”

Good for you.

Thanks for that. I thought that the Fredster had expressed sincere regret for McCain-Feingold, but I see I was wrong, and I was a moron to believe that.

The only angst I have of a Fred presidency is the fear that the Fredheads will be no-stop, 24/7, reminding us of how wonderful he is, even if he does things that they are not in agreement with…..

…and, like a zombie, gloss over every foible come what may, while the rest of us are just trying to have a good day.

And, before you smarty pants beat me to it:

The only angst I have of a Fred Romney presidency is the fear that the Fred Mittens will be no-stop, 24/7, reminding us of how wonderful he is, even if he does things that they are not in agreement with…..

So with that out of the way, we can (hopefully) proceed to have a debate.

First off, one should never wear politics closer than length of your arm.
By keeping politics an arms length away, one can remain objective and therefore criticize our consensually elected peers/human beings as needed.

So with that said, why don’t we start?

Oh that’s right… we have already maxed out the bandwidth available for that discussion.

So let’s start by eliminating the weakest candidate by virtue of who is the least liked candidate..

Out of 677 votes:
Mike Huckabee gets 413 or 61%.

McCain gets 140 or 20.7%.

Giuliani gets 55 or 8.1%.

Romney 51 or 7.5%.

Thompson 18 or 2.7%.

So with Mike Huckabee out of the way, let’s vote for our favorite republican candidate, shall we?

Mcguyver on January 13, 2008 at 4:22 PM

funky chicken on January 13, 2008 at 4:23 PM

Bah, isn’t Romney personally against abortion, but doesn’t want to impose his beliefs on the rest of America? It’s easy to distort that nuanced stance by taking him out of context… Ain’t it?

No, you were quite right. He has indeed expressed regret over aspects of the bill, most recently at the last debate.

I believe that vote came from his sincere desire to battle government waste. During his time in the Senate, he forced the first vote on term limits in decades and battled government waste and fraud.

McCain-Feingold was certainly a barrier to my support for Fred, but he won me over in spite of it. Reading Government at the Brink (PDF file) certainly helped me understand the reasoning behind his vote, if not agree.

What to call ‘em?
IF:

Thompson supporters are called Fredheads
and
Paul supporters are called Paulnuts or Paulbots
and
Huckabee supporters are called Huckleberries
THEN
What are Romney supporters called?
Romnoids? Mittens?

I can’t even think of anything to call Giuliani or McCain supporters.

Good idea!!! Maybe a hefty lawsuit against the employer (and the landlord!) on the grounds of illegally harboring a previous deportee (a FELONY, by the way) will get employers to pay attention to the law. Note Arizona’s new law at work.

Discussing, in more detail, who they really are and what they can and will do to save this country should be the topic. Make no mistake they are reading all this.

Here!, here!!
Put down the pipe & open the Good Ear.
Fred Thompson is a threat to the MSM doctrines for Who gets to make the news, & to the Candidates Code of TV behavior.
He must be kept invisible by a Media in its death throws. & the only candidates we are allowed to support w/ great vigor must have the stamp of approval from TV Headquarters.

Listen to Fred’s responses & watch his delivery. There is something to be said for Slow & Steady. It is an art form virtually forgotten in the U.S.

‘If you want the tiger cubs, you have to go into the tiger’s den!’
or this:
‘You will obey me as I lead you
& eat the garbage that I feed you
until the day that we don’t need you
don’t go for help, no one will head you!
your mind is totally controlled
it has been stuffed into my mold
& you will do as you are told
until the rights to you are sold!!
THAT’S RIGHT FOLKS!!
DON’T TOUCH THAT DIAL!’

This from the poll where Mitt leads McCain by 8 pts.

McCain owes his solid standing to independents and Democrats, taking 38 percent of their support, while Huckabee had 22 percent and Romney had 18 percent.

Which…. explains why McCain won in NH (as Rush Limbaugh explained) because out of Staters are able to come over and say,”Yea we’re thinking about moving here” and go right ahead and vote in the NH primary.

Like Rush said, “Can you say screwed?”

The first two States can now see how brilliant their status really is.

As I explain here on Mike Huckabee’s aberration status……

SECOND LOOK AT THE IOWA CAUCUS!

GO HAWKEYES!
