No, I can’t. I can’t speak for the voters of any state, nor indeed for my next door neighbor. People make up their minds based on a variety of issues, and I’m not going to gameplan the heck out of my single, solitary, personal vote.
You are predicting trends, and you may be right; I am stating why I will not be bothering with looking at trends as a voter, only a news junkie.
joewm315 on January 14, 2008 at 7:39 AM
Bill Clinton himself couldn’t have dodged that question better than you did…
Bradky on January 14, 2008 at 7:44 AM
What blue states does Thompson put in play? I don’t know, go ask 5 million or so people and let me know what you find out.
joewm315 on January 14, 2008 at 7:45 AM
Ostrich thy name is joewm315…
Bradky on January 14, 2008 at 7:57 AM
Now you’ve confused me.
Question: What Blue states does Thompson put in play?
Answer: I don’t know, and neither do you.
It seems pretty clear-cut to me.
joewm315 on January 14, 2008 at 7:58 AM
Ignore the polls. We have seen that polls are useless and can tell the pollster whatever fits their agenda.
Thompson is converting many people. I believe he is the only candidate who will get the entire party to vote for him. He will get evangelicals, social conservatives, fiscal conservatives. His previous career and face/name recognition will get more moderate voters in the party.
None of the other candidates can boast this. They all have some faction of the party saying they wont get their vote. Fred can win. Its up to us to make it happen.
I still think he made a mistake waiting so long to get into the race. He didn’t capitalize on that early momentum he had. When he was second in many polls before he even announced. Let’s hope he keeps up the surge. He is going to have to start getting VERY aggressive so that he makes a great showing on super Tuesday.
MBFlyerfan on January 14, 2008 at 8:12 AM
Thompson has my vote. I hope he stays in long enough for me to punch out one of my hanging chads.
KMC1 on January 14, 2008 at 8:22 AM
I really wish fred would take out McCain, but maybe something else is going on here.
What if they GOP fellas are doing a survivor? McCain and Thompson have an alliance to get Huck voted off the island?
I trust Fred, I like the guy, he will do what he thinks is best. If he fails, he will no one to blame but himself and he won’t owe me a dang cent of the money I put towards him.
Go Fred!
RobertInAustin on January 14, 2008 at 8:31 AM
Soros’ power was enhanced by CFR, not the other way around! These 401 c groups don’t even have to disclose who their donors are! CFR has been a disaster on so many levels from First Amendment issues to expanding the power of men like Soros.
One has nothing to do with the other. CFR had nothing to do with illegal Chinese money, selling the Lincoln Bedroom and so forth. There were existing laws on the books which the Clintons broke. Why is it that everytime politicians break the law we create new laws instead of enforcing existing law?
Many of us have made similar arguments about a Thompson/Romney ticket here, but it would make more sense for Rudy to get AG. After his disaster with Kerik he would be hammered if he were the nominee for Homeland Security. The media and Dems would have a field day with that.

Fascinating stuff, y’all. I wanted to chime in, but have to go. Catch ya in a couple of hours.
wccawa on January 14, 2008 at 8:44 AM
Thompson completed his answer ignoring the interruption intended to skew the complete thought.
Thompson has already delineated his differences with McCain on illegal immigration, tax cuts, carrying conservative Supreme Court Justices through Senate confirmations, etc.
The results of McCain’s campaing finance reform is baring its cunt as America witnesses the enhanced ease in billionaire and multi-millionaire powerhousing of liberal campaigns and purchasing of liberal candidates.
On the matter of endorsements, journalists and those promoting commentaries feign to provide a level playing field while participating in subterfuge. Politics are obvious.
The foundation of the conservative movement in America built the GOP that in turn freed America of slaves and concubines and terminated Jim Crow by supporting the American civil rights movement. The cause for the conservative movement’s impetus on our day, protecting the Constitution and Bill of Rights from liberal dissolution, is the platform of Fred Thompson. That has yet to be respected by those smitten by liberal charisma, whether it parades in a military uniform or spiritual garb.

Correction to my 8:37:
CFR enabled 501(C)3s and 527s not 401(C)3s…
Buy Danish on January 14, 2008 at 9:12 AM
To add: Kieth Olberdouche named Fred his “worst person in the world” the other day for his comment about “introducing the speed boats Iranians to the virgins”. That alone should count for a ten point bump among republicans.
MBFlyerfan on January 14, 2008 at 9:20 AM
All of your credibility is gone, gone I say!
No, actually CFR is terrible as this incredible article so admirably demonstrates.
It was my biggest obstacle to supporting Thompson, and I only recently cleared that hurdle after reading Government at the Brink last month, and somewhat understanding the position he (mistakenly) approached it from. I believe he is a man of principle whose desire to combat fraud and corruption in government led him to make a bad decision. Beyond that, he has thoroughly convinced me that he would make a great President.
I’d like to see McCain forced to defend it to pro-lifers and the moderates so enamored of his campaign, though. He and Huckabee have pulled a bait-and-switch by merely denying their records, not defending them. This is only possible with a compliant media.
Back on topic, we need more conservative justices to overturn McCain-Feingold, as they set the table to do in the case described in the above article. I trust Thompson, Romney, or Giuliani to do this.
joewm315 on January 14, 2008 at 9:25 AM
Buy Danish, yes, that’s true. It’s the law of unintended consequences yet again. Legislation is often a bad idea. But you cannot tell me you are going to try to argue that McCain knew he’d be setting Soros up for greater control with the bill. Something tells me McCain doesn’t get a whole lot of Soros $$$.
It’s why I’m leery of lots of sweeping “reforms” like, say, Mittcare. Big, sweeping “reforms” always cost a whole lot more than advertised, in financial and other terms.

csdeven on January 14, 2008 at 9:29 AM
Fred doesn’t need to go after McCain — Super Tuesday will do that for him. He needs to take down the Huckster — which is why he is targeting him. If he can take down Huckleberry Hound, then after February 5th he will have a strong position and gun for the nomination.
SunSword on January 14, 2008 at 9:31 AM
At first look, I thought it a little kooky…but after reading it again, you may have come upon a solution. It won’t happen because of egos, money, etc. But it would be interesting to see something like that happen. A coalition of republicans, with a plan to “push America forward”, setting aside their differences for a “Better America”.
“Team America”, one man can’t do it alone…accountability to each other, accountability to the voters. Each bringing their own principles, expertise, knowledge…etc.
It would work, if you could get by the egos.
right2bright on January 14, 2008 at 9:36 AM
SunSword yep.
More on CFR. Supporters (I’m not one, BTW) could argue that it has succeeded in showing more citizens how the Soros types work by forcing them to create these big, obvious 527s etc. If the American people don’t care enough to punish recipients of Soros’s largesse, is that really the fault of CFR?
funky chicken on January 14, 2008 at 9:36 AM
This is great stuff. I think that the strategy of attacking Huckabee is the best possible move both in terms of strategy and principle. His sudden rise in the early states has been deeply alarming to most conservatives, evangelicals included. A determined attack is just what is needed to throw sunlight on Huckabee’s record ASAP.
In addition to that, this allows Fred to give voice to the concerns of so many conservatives — “What the huck is Mike Huckabee doing anywhere near the front of the pack???” Thompson is the anti-Huck in every sense, as his positions and voting record should appeal to all members of the Reagan coalition, not just one narrow slice.
Beatnik Joe on January 14, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Personalities aside, on the issues alone, Fred has my support. I don’t give a hang about electability–which is a crock anyway, since ultimately only one candidate will possess it–I care about what our party is going to stand for. If McCain or Giuliani are elected, we’ll have a RINO assisting the Dems in Congress. I’m not going to vote for that.
A vote for the lesser of two evils is still a vote for evil.
windbag on January 14, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Ignorance of the law is no excuse, especially when it’s your legislation! And whether or not McCain gets money from Soros is completely irrelevant. McCain’s legislative proposals have proven to be disastrous and the thought of this man having the bully pulpit with a legislative agenda is scary. Unless you’re a lib, in which case one might be overjoyed.
As for Mitt’s Mass health insurance reform – that was done after careful analysis by someone who is an expert in data mining, and it was done in one State. Mitt is not advocating that every state do what he did exactly the same way since every state has different parameters.
That is very different from HillaryCare which is a Federal program that will cause a net increase in taxes.

You said he went into detail. I said “no he didn’t”. Who was right, me or you?
Anyone who listens to the Levin recording that was linked will see that his handlers cut off the interview when Thompson was being pressed to slam McCain. At that moment, Levin was worried that the Thompson folks were angry with him.

Robert Bork chimed in immediately following Fred Thompson. Levin had his own program schedule to keep as did Thompson’s vigorous campaign.

Well, I guess this is where the writers are during the strike cuz that’s a nice bit of fiction.
How you gleaned all that without any “detail” according to your requirement of what is deemed detail, is suspect. Fred says on what issues he is in disagreement on, he mentions why he went after Huck at the time and not McCain (albiet weak) and then he had to go.
You represented that whole exchange as he said nothing. You are nit-picking and really reaching to find an argument here. You are anylyzing what happened at the end based on your own prejudice and not from fact.
The more you insist, the more you represent a losing pitch. Could Fred have said more? Who knows? He had to go. Did it satisfy you? Absolutley not apparently, but don’t turn that into he said nothing. Besides, it’s the Mark Levin show, there will be plenty of other times for Fred to speak and plenty of other venues.
To bank your argument on this one appearance is weak.
(By the way, pay attention to original conversations. It was funky chicken you should be quoting as saying “details.”)
geckomon on January 14, 2008 at 1:37 PM
If political life were a videogame where the player (me-you) could design the politicians, I’d make Fred 10 years younger.
He’s 65 already-I know that shouldn’t be a slam on anyone, but realistically, he is 65; at the end of his first term he’d be about 70. I remember Reagan, and respected him, but I feel that 65 is too old to run for leader of the free world.
Mitt is 60, though he seems younger. Hillary is 60, but seems older.
Even though he’s a Democrat, I think Obama has a shot simply because he’s younger, and it’s a young person’s world.
Doug on January 14, 2008 at 2:45 PM
Agreed. Pollster: Would you support Fred Thompson over Hillary Cinton, even though Fred (insert lies, inuendo, etc.here)?

Fred Thompson had to leave the Levin show to address voters at a fundraiser. An earlier commentor left the link to his appearance in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Fred recalls President Lincoln’s integrity, character, courage, and common sense. Fred sees the silver lining around the nay-sayers’ cloud. Fred remains optimistic with hope for the next generation of Americans that this year voters will choose according to policy/record, not according to deceitful disinformation. Unlike others in the political campaign, Fred has his cards on the table. Fred is willing to sacrifice popularity for what is right because in the end that is always what is best for America, to do what is wise for the long term goal rather than succumb to short term liberal or populist deterents like chasing rabbits down the wrong path.
Fred understands relationships in today’s world. Populism with all of its gloss is the wide path leading us into the liberal socialist state. Now is the time for Republicans to vote for the party’s heart and soul with the moral courage to do the right thing. Ask yourself what the government should be doing in your life and how the government should be involved in your house. If the government should be involved, choose between local and federal the level you want the government officiating in your personal life with your personal income.
He stressed the significance of our military, rebuilding it, thanking them and funding them, appreciating our dependence on them. He said that traditionally our government spent much more on funding the military than the current 4% and bemoaned Clinton’s decimation of our military to 1/3 its previous number. Fred is committed to a 1 million person ground force. He would not change the military branches. He would maintain the clean military honor, and would not persecute those executing the process of duty in battle.
He covered differences between himself and each candidate. His emphasis is not negativism and personal attacks, unlike Huckabee who will not answer a policy question of record properly. Fred Thompson answered questions from the audience regarding the military, housing, inflation, and tax cuts. Regarding housing/economy, he noted the natural course of events with the inflation balloon that usually ebbs back and forth in its own balancing act. Since Bush’s tax cut, we’ve enjoyed 6 years of uninterrupted growth (unusually long without a bump) and the downturn is only normal, not to panic and over react but to use a cushion landing that will not reward irresponsible speculative investments, to not encourage bad behavior that is bound to return. He said conditions as yet are not determined, but he could support a stimulous pkg. for tax cut but tailored to get into the consumer pocket, that rebates help but to reconsider the appreciation schedule. But he said conditions as yet are not determined. Regarding the 2010 expiration date of the Bush tax cuts, he would preserve them. He spoke of eliminating the Death Tax, noting that as set @2009 0% New Year’s Eve, to be 50% 1-1-10 New Years Day. He would provide an alternative short flat tax leaving the choice to the individual or couple who may prefer the current tax method. Fred’s flat tax would benefit most people the best. Fred would also not run off corporate growth investment that allows economic freedom, aligning with Reagan there. He refers people to his Social Security Plan at Fred08.com.
Fred Thompson’s leading statesmanship and party platform deserve respect and American value votes.
