Dang, I like this guy when he talks.
Why is his campaign so iffy?
Fred, Fire your staff!!

If Huck has training wheels, Fred! is popping wheelies. Solid QotD.
warrenmr on January 13, 2008 at 10:16 PM
I think Fred finds it pretty easy to crush Huckabee with facts, reason, and logic.
Huck comes off as a petty immature candidate that is used to getting his way.

Is it too late for Fred, or could he still make it? He’s the one I’d most like to support, but it’s hard to tell if he’s serious.
Esthier on January 13, 2008 at 10:18 PM
I really like the way that Fred has framed this argument within the context of defending the Reagan coalition. Meaning, using Reaganism from which to criticize Huck instead of just, say, Romney’s contrast ads. There is the sense of, dare I say, moral authority with that.
Spirit of 1776 on January 13, 2008 at 10:19 PM
What is wrong with the GOP base? I can’t for the life of me figure out why Fred Thompson isn’t the presumptive nominee…
America needs Fred Thompson!

Go Fred GO! Crush the Huckster like a dove (any KU fans out there?).

GO FRED GO. huck sucks
custer on January 13, 2008 at 10:21 PM
Exactly, Huckabee comes across as an irresponsible frat boy. Problem is that Fred probably isn’t going to get enough independent votes to win if he were the candidate. I believe Rudy could. Particularly if Hillary is the Democratic candidate. If it is Hillary vs Rudy, the independents are going to break Rudy. If it is Hillary vs anyone else, the independents stay home. If it is Obama against anyone, the independents vote Obama.
crosspatch on January 13, 2008 at 10:21 PM
the real question is whether Fred could win the general election vs. Hillary? would he hold Florida and ohio?

Perception.
rhinoishere on January 13, 2008 at 10:22 PM
More evidence that Fred is providing cover fire for McCain if you ask me.
lorien1973 on January 13, 2008 at 10:22 PM
nah, I think the real question of the moment is… can Fred win South Carolina? Man, I hope so.
rhinoishere on January 13, 2008 at 10:22 PM
Nice. Next I hope he addresses Wolf’s excellent question–how does Fred contrast with John McCain. That question was a perfect way for Fred to maturely and professionally address McCain’s shamnest support, et al.
Fred shouldn’t dwell on the Huckabee issue too much. I agree with Rush Limbaugh in that Huckabee is the MSM’s candidate of choice. Let’s forget Huck and see the debates between Romney, McCain and Thompson.
Montana on January 13, 2008 at 10:23 PM
Blame America first… Ain’t that the truth!
So now Huck-a-wannabe-conservative is playing Cigarman-like politics? How anti-climatic as that should have been expected from this closet liberal.
Training wheels indeed.
DannoJyd on January 13, 2008 at 10:24 PM
I think it’s strategy. Fred can attack the Huckster and use the waves from that to ride over both him and McCain… er, maybe, hopefully.

Well, it’s a little early to throw out Huckabee, but at least…at this point…we’d all get so much more out of the debates if it were whittled down to five: McCain, Huck, Thompson, Giuliani, and Mitt.

It’s probably going to be a McCain/Thompson ticket. If Fred knocks Huckabee out of SC, that helps McCain and Mac is likely to choose Fred as a runningmate.

I see you bought the new merdia spin. I like Fred but its too late. give me a break we have 48 elections to go. This is almost the same thing that happened to his senate campaign. He was behind, he came out and tols his story to the people and they loved it. Fred is the best hope for the Rep party. I read comment after comment that if MCCain wins, if huck wins if Rudy wins large parts of the party will stay home. Not so with Mitt and Fred. I think a Ticket with Mitt and Fred on it will be a winner. Mitt can help get MI, some of the Northeast put into play like PA, NJ and Fred can roll up the South, the SW, Mountain states and the midwest. That leaves the Blue, blue NW and NE in The dems camp. Fred could not only win but win with enough of a mandate to fix SS, fund the defense, and cut spending. First principles all the way.

Igor R. on January 13, 2008 at 10:43 PM
If Romney wins Michigan, and Mac wins SC, I think that Mac wins the nod. But I don’t see a Mac/Fred ticket really - that’s like: vote Republican - the two old white men ticket. I don’t think that can beat an Obama or a Hillary ticket.
Spirit of 1776 on January 13, 2008 at 10:44 PM
When you are in a 10 round fight, you don’t throw every punch in the 1st round.
Remember, there are a few primaries left.
Fred will continue to build up steam while gathering strong conservative endorsements.
In a few weeks Fred will seem like he is the apparent nominee. People from other camps will have dropped there delusional love for their candidate and swear they have been Fred heads the whole time.
Fred will do the same thing in the run up to the general.

Hell, Fred’s serious - as serious as a heart attack and getting more serious by the minute. Huckabee has made the mistake of waking this slumbering giant and that was a huge miscalculation on the huckster from Hope’s part. The dope from Hope is a malicious little pr**k that reminds me, for all the world, of the little peanut farmer from Georgia.
Even if Fred doesn’t get the nomination, and I WOULD NOT count him out (!!!) he’s going after that nasty little pecksniff and going to do so with a vengance. In so doing awareness of Fred and what he stands for will grow.

Spirit of 1776 on January 13, 2008 at 10:42 PM
If you were a conservative which person would you like to have standing last? Mitt with his millions and some conservative fundations, Huck with his populism appealing to large parts of the base? Rudy with his Rino credntials. Or would you like the choice be between you and a democrate in all but name for the parties nomination, one who has been fatally wounded on immigration, on free speech rights, on working with the dems, on age. No Fred is right he wants the choice to be between MCCain and Him. If it is which do you think the majority of the party will choose. 2000 showed that answer. The part does not want MCcain. Iowa showed that Huck could seize the base in orgasmic fever not so for the rest of the canidates, Huck is the most dangerous, he steals votes from Fred. You deal with the biggest enemy first then you go after the weaker ones. McCain is no REP front runner, never was and never will be.

(Must be an Arkansas thing.)
I just do NOT understand why this guy’s not doing better and pulling higher poll and primary/caucus percentages…or more delegates, which is what really counts for something.

Fred had a theory that if you simply tell the truth and stick to the real conservative values people will follow. He has finally figure out that people respond to forceful language.
Igor R. on January 13, 2008 at 10:59 PM
No one is attacking McCain because everyone knows perfectly well that he will implode as soon as one of them starts to bring his record into the mix. Each of the wants to be on his “good” side so that when it happens, they can get his endorcement, and the free deligates that will come with it.

The clip was just a portion of the interview. Here’s more…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh_0j4jPdxA&eurl=http://www.blogsforfredthompson.com/
Fred does state his differences with McCain as well at Rudy and Mitt. Not as forcefully as I’d like regarding McCain. However, I agree with a poster on another thread who thought slamming McCain in a state (SC) with lots of military folks might not go over too well.
LodeStar on January 13, 2008 at 11:00 PM

He attacked former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York, accusing him of stealing his tax plan, tagged Senator John McCain of Arizona as soft on illegal immigration and jabbed repeatedly at former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas for taking what he called “liberal” positions. Mr. Thompson scored one of the more crowd-pleasing remarks of the evening when he said about a recent encounter between a Navy ship and several Iranian speedboats: “I think one more step and they would have been introduced to those virgins they’re looking forward to seeing.”

If Fred won the nomination the general would be a clear contest between liberal and conservative positions. What message would we take home if he lost? What would we do then?
Alternatively, if Mitt or Rudy lost in the general, what would that mean? I’m not including Huckster, because we already know what will happen and why it will happen with him.

With a well-worn face atop an angular, 6-foot-4 frame, he looks like the smartest man in town holding forth at the county courthouse.
Chip Felkel, a longtime South Carolina political consultant who is not working for any of the candidates, said Mr. Thompson initially seemed to be a candidate who might appeal to all the major voting groups in the state. “Social conservatives from Huckabee, military votes from McCain, economic conservatives from Romney,” Mr. Felkel said, referring to former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts.
“But so far he hasn’t done that,” said Mr. Felkel, who added that he had watched Mr. Thompson’s debate performance on Thursday and was skeptical that it had helped him much.
Sirita Long, a construction forewoman from Moncks Corner, disagreed. “He’s a straight-up shoot-from-the-hip guy,” said Ms. Long, who said she had been leaning toward Mr. McCain until the debate. “I could see him staring down our enemies.”

As the election process has demonstrated so far this is not about liberal vs. conservative, at least mainly not that. It’s about “connecting”, “humor”, “winning debates”, “retail politics”, “passion”, repeating the word “Jesus”, and everything but what matters.
Igor R. on January 13, 2008 at 11:05 PM
I love that he’s basically setting himself up as the last defender of the Conservative movement, but I do agree with lorien as well: Why are you blasting Huckabee? He’s sinking himself! Go after McCain, I don’t care if he’s your friend!
Fred needs to ask himself if pointing out all that’s wrong with his friend Captain Amnesty, and potentially risking a personal friendship, is as important to him as the direction this country goes in. May be a hard decision, but if he’s gonna be running this country, he’s going to have to make hard decisions.
MadisonConservative on January 13, 2008 at 11:06 PM
I see a lot of wishful thinking on the part of a lot of followers of certain candidates. First they read the tea leaves and decide Thompson not going all out on McCain means he is conspiring and helping McCain. Then there is the McCain dream of winning the conservative base which will be important in a state like SC.
_
Face it, Thompson goes after Huckabee simply because Huckabee draws from the conservative base, which Thompson needs. He was ahead in polls until recently as well. McCain can win crossover states like Michigan and New Hampshire where Democrats and Independents can vote, but I seriously doubt other states where they can’t.
_
So it seems pretty smart to me, eliminate the Huckabee first, then maybe go after Romney if he puts up a good showing. Finally toward the end if he is even still around you might have to do something about McCain, but why waste money and time on a guy like McCain whom you pretty much can write off after Super Tuesday.
_
In the end, it will be between Romney, Thompson, and maybe Huckbee. Guiliani is sliding, but if he gets a miracle he could still be in it. Thompson stays in it if he first wins or comes in second in SC and then follows on with other wins on Super Tuesday. Romney is in it for good simply because he has his own money. Huckabee will be in it simply because there are party power brokers willing to push him since he fits their RINO mold.

Only suitable candidates on the issue of the day - illegal immigration - are Hunter, Thompson, and Romney, in that order. Everyone else, Rep. and Dem., propose taking bribes for illegal aliens to stay in the country. And it is a WINNING issue across both Dem. and Rep.
If anyone else gets in, watch out for the biggest transformational mistake this century - 30 million instant residents on the ‘pathway to citizenship’ and 30 million more right behind them to take their places, when they see what a great deal it is. A pox on Huck, McCain, and Rudy - all coddlers of illegal aliens.
fred5678 on January 13, 2008 at 11:10 PM
A Thompson/Romney ticket would be fantastic. Fred’s conservatism and Romney’s managerial skills, as compared to whatever joke of a Democrat ticket gets chosen, would be unbeatable.
amkun on January 13, 2008 at 11:11 PM
A conservative Huck is not. Neither is McCain. Rudy is not conservative, certainly on social issues. Romney is questionable on conviction. So that leaves Fred. If Fred didn’t have a history, I think that he would be the clear conservative choice. (Just to answer your questions)
I understand what you are saying but I don’t see any reason he can’t criticize two people in the state that he needs to win. I will absolutely grant you if he is shooting for second, it’s a good strategy. The thing I think that makes Fred appealing is this whole notion of him telling it like it is. Well, I want him to tell it like it is wrt McCain. I know he has it in him now b/c of the debate. But maybe he is saving that for the c. trail there in SC.

Fredmentum [Jonathan Adler]
Not only has the New York Times reported on the apparent surge in support for my guy Fred, but it seems that the red pick-up is picking up steam. Moreover, Huck’s been hurling attacks Fred’s way (though Huck’s barbs lack much substance). Either Fred got under his skin or, in Huck’s words, he’s “above the target.” I sure hope it’s the latter.
