NFL Sunday playoff open thread
posted at 12:30 pm on January 13, 2008 by Bryan
It’s San Diego at Indy at 1 pm and New York at Dallas at 4:30. No upsets in the Saturday games means we’re likely to see one today, and history is against Dallas a bit. It’s hard to beat a team three times in one season, and Dallas has beaten New York twice this season. While the Cowboys are easily the more complete team, the offense has struggled over the last part of the season and the Giants have stepped up. The Cowboys are at home and should win but it will be a tough one.
On the AFC side, the Colts are healthy after getting several players back from injury.

Oh no, TO is tearing up!
TheBigOldDog on January 13, 2008 at 8:29 PM
He’s showing his sensitive side. They just might win this yet.
oakpack on January 13, 2008 at 8:30 PM
Hey folks, have you seen the weather forecast for Lambeau next week? A predicted high of 4 degrees! Hot dog (or should I say, hot brat), this is going to be fun! Go Pack!!!
CrusaderMom on January 13, 2008 at 8:34 PM
Pats and Packs for the Superbowl? we’ll see.
gr8inferno on January 13, 2008 at 8:34 PM
The Pack was the last team to beat the Pats in the Superbowl
oakpack on January 13, 2008 at 8:38 PM
You Packer fans do realize it’s cold in the Northeast right? You do know it snows here right? If you don’t think the Giants know how to play in the weather you’re in for a big surprise.
TheBigOldDog on January 13, 2008 at 8:39 PM
I do know that it’s cold in the northeast, but I also know that the Packers tend to be energized by winter weather at Lambeau. (Although not in Soldier Field — yeeks!) By the way, are the Giants a dome team?
CrusaderMom on January 13, 2008 at 8:44 PM
TheBigOldDog on January 13, 2008 at 8:39 PM
Gee, I wasn’t really sure about that. We’re not as in-tune with those kinda things like the people that live near oceans are.
oakpack on January 13, 2008 at 8:45 PM
No, they play out doors in one of (if not the) windiest stadium in the NFL.
TheBigOldDog on January 13, 2008 at 8:45 PM
Yes, that’s obviously true given how many Packer fans seem to be hanging their hat on bad weather next week.
TheBigOldDog on January 13, 2008 at 8:47 PM

YESSSSSSSS!
My day is now complete.

Wow, ya sure got me there.
oakpack on January 13, 2008 at 8:49 PM
No, BigOldDog, we’re hanging our hats on Brett Favre. And Ryan Grant. And Greg Jennings. And all of them.
By the way, considering that your guys pulled out an amazing upset today, you sure are in a sour mood. Lighten up, for Pete’s sake! Enjoy it! While you can.
CrusaderMom on January 13, 2008 at 8:56 PM
I’m not a Giants fan. I just find it amusing that the Packer fans are already looking past a team that went into Dallas and did something their team could not do, win. I also find it amusing that so many Packer fans think they have some sort of advantage in bad weather over a team that plays in equally bad bad weather, and in fact, in some ways, even worse.
TheBigOldDog on January 13, 2008 at 9:00 PM
Romo could have done a tad better, but I think coaching was the problem today. I see AP has ROMO as the fault, but no, some missed plays by a few key players caused todays failure. Coaching-wise, they should have been on the pratice field keeping limber etc. and not watching the waves or pumping iron. Plus the strategy was geared for the first half. I defintely see a game strategy error.
Basic stuff folks. That coach is history. Jerry Jones’ look on the field said it all.

a moment of silence for da boyz is in order…..
johnnyU on January 13, 2008 at 9:04 PM
No moment of silence for the Cowgirls in my house!! LOVE watching T.O. tear up! There’s no crying in football!!

By the way, are the Giants a dome team?
That’s Peyton, not Eli.
Gerard on January 13, 2008 at 9:13 PM
Gotta remember, the Giants do play in the northeast. Giants stadium is one of the strangest places to play in the NFL. Weather is not going to be that big a factor. Don’t forget the game they played in Buffalo a couple of weeks ago. Rain, snow, sleet, wind. I’ve been a fan for almost 40 years, this is the most surprising run I have ever seen from my Jints. Just enjoying the ride!
farleyman on January 13, 2008 at 9:19 PM
Dayem. Guess I blew that one, eh?
Dave R. on January 13, 2008 at 9:26 PM
The ONLY reason the Giants won today is because they were a little less inept than Dallas. With ten minutes left, they gave Dallas three shots at beating them. All they had to do was manage the clock and get a first down or two. (at least try to get a first down) Each time they had the ball late in the game, they hand off to the back, and he runs into the line with his head down.
The Giants won dispite Coughlin and Eli.
oakpack on January 13, 2008 at 9:27 PM
The Giants won dispite… Eli.
Maybe they can orchestrate a trade for a real quarterback next season, like Romo or Garcia.
Wait…
Gerard on January 13, 2008 at 9:32 PM
Because they scored more points than Dallas.
Wade on January 13, 2008 at 9:41 PM

farleyman on January 13, 2008 at 9:19 PM
They won that game in Buffalo, but it was a bad night for Eli. He doesn’t seem to play well in inclement weather. The running backs will probably have to carry the load again.
I’ve been cheering for the Giants and Packers all season for two reasons: 1. I am a fan of both Manning and Favre 2. Because my team the Falcons…well I need say no more. I’m very happy that one of these teams is going to the Superbowl.
Whoever makes it, I just want the Pats to lose =)

I love how they have one good season in, what, four years, and all of a sudden McCarthy is the reincarnation of Vince Lombardi.
Gerard on January 13, 2008 at 10:12 PM
WAAAAAAAAAH! OK, I’m all bettah now. Giants came to play. Cowboys didn’t come out in the second half. Oh, well…
Congrats to the Giants, and GO PACKERS!
TeeDee on January 13, 2008 at 10:23 PM
Jessica Simpson is now persona non grata in Dallas. Tony played OK, but the offensive line stunk it up. However, Tony’s work ethic after the last loss seems to have been infective to others for preparation for this game.
GO Pack! They’ve been my second favorite team since the 70s; and they save their playing around until AFTER the big win. Not sure I’d want to take a snowball delivered by Bret, though :)
michaelo on January 13, 2008 at 10:29 PM
They need to find a center who knows what a snap count is.
Gerard on January 13, 2008 at 10:49 PM
We’ll never know whether they could’ve or not since Dallas choked in the divisional round. One thing we DO know is that the Packers will be playing for the NFC Championship and the Cowflops will be home watching it on TV. The Giants lost at Dallas during the regular season too, for whatever that’s worth.
BTW, for the McCarthy to coach the Packers to the NFC Championship in his 2nd year IS a pretty amazing achievement considering they were 4-12 the year before he took over. Kinda reminds me of how Lombardi took the Packers to the NFL Championship in HIS 2nd year…the Packers were 1-10-1 the year before he took over.
packsoldier on January 13, 2008 at 10:53 PM
I’m a Giants fan, and of course I’m very excited they won! Sour grapes for anyone who think the Giants didn’t deserve to win that game. They surely did.
I hope this also shows NFL teams not to coast during the last few games of the season. I find it more than coincidental that Tampa Bay, Dallas, and the Colts all coasted in their last games and rested players. Now they are watching the games at home.
We Giant fans know that Dallas was the tougher team than Green Bay, but Eli doesn’t like the cold, and that’s why we may have more problems in Green Bay. But the Giants are playing great, so anything is possible.
Finally, Jessica Simpson had NOTHING to do with the Cowboys losing. Anyone who thinks she does knows very little about football.
asc85 on January 13, 2008 at 11:07 PM
I wouldn’t put The Bucs and The Colts into the same category as The Cowboys.
Dalls just laid down in the games after it had clinched homefield advantage for the playoffs-much in the tradition of Wade Phillips, potato chip-eater extraordinaire.
The other two teams didn’t really have a choice-unless they wanted their star players to be walking onto the field on crutches.
The Cowboys have no valid excuse for losing.
Gerard on January 13, 2008 at 11:25 PM
Observations on the ‘boys:
Flozell Adams was sucking wind in the 4th Quarter.
The Coach (Bill Parcells) used to refer to Terry Glenn as “she”.
thegreatbeast on January 14, 2008 at 12:49 AM
I wouldn’t blame Glen for this debacle.
Jacobs Sidesteps Crayton’s Barbs
Don’t you think you should be a little bit more than a fifth receiving option before you run your mouth?

The Cowboys have no valid excuse for losing.
Gerard on January 13, 2008 at 11:25 PM
yeah they do…..they didn’t score as many points as the Giants.
DfDeportation on January 14, 2008 at 1:35 AM
Okay, let me rephrase that.
They don’t have a valid excuse for losing in the manner they did.
Just a continuing series of mistakes and blunders on their part.
They gave up nearly half the length of a football field just in penalties!
I thought I was watching The Giants, ca. mid-season, for a minute.
Gerard on January 14, 2008 at 1:44 AM
And as a Charger fan, I salute you for this post.
It’s not often you see NFL fans, on the ‘net or in person, displaying that kind of sportsmanship.
Hawkins1701 on January 14, 2008 at 2:33 AM
I’m a Giants fan, but I can’t stand Eli Manning. While I’m happy to see the Giants moving forward, I can’t help but hope for abject failure on Eli’s part. Maybe he could start for the Cardinals or some other pro-football team, but time and time again he demonstrates his inability to lead effectively. The Giants offense did not win yesterday’s game. The Giants defense, hurt and missing Ross as well as a few other playing injured, is what won that game. When Eli turned the ball over to the Cowboys not once but TWICE in the last 5 minutes of the game, I cringed and practically walked away. If the defense hadn’t pulled some extra effort out, we’d be singing a different toon, as one, blaming Eli and some really crappy play-calling.
I mean, WTF? You run three plays in a row, despite needing at least two first downs, and don’t take any noticeable time off the clock? Then you punt, get the ball back due to some extraordinary defense and THEN you run two more run plays before getting sacked? Awful – that’s the word to describe the Giants offense in the last quarter.
Fact remains, Giants won by the skin of their teeth, and it’s all thanks to the defense for stepping up. Any laudatory comments for one Eli Manning are evidence that someone only watched a highlights reel and didn’t actually see the game.
Mercutio on January 14, 2008 at 9:19 AM
Eli didn’t call those plays, Coughlin-or at the very least, Gilbride-did.
Blaming him for those two drives is simply looking for ways to blame him when he’s performed better than any QB in the NFL, save Tom Brady, for the past three weeks.
Absolutely absurd.
