Hillary on glimmers of political progress in Iraq: You’re welcome

Another one from MTP this morning, a day after the first fragile measure of political reconciliation passed the Iraqi parliament. Whom to thank? Not David Petraeus, whose claims of improved security and lowered sectarian tensions we were assured require “the willing suspension of disbelief.” Thank the Democratic candidates like Hillary Clinton — who opposed the surge, who opposed funding for the surge, who even opposed a symbolic resolution defending Petraeus from the “Betray Us” smear. It took the looming prospect of withdrawal by a Democratic president, she says, to finally get the Iraqis in gear, neglecting the fact that the election of the Democratic Congress in 2006 was also supposed to get them in gear and never quite did. Thus do the stars align for Hillary: the failure of her own party plus the success of an operation she dismissed produce a credit-taking opportunity only the dumbest Clinton supporter could fall for. The fact is, troop levels are increasingly out of her hands and nobody knows it better than the Iraqis she cynically pretends to be influencing:

[T]he new partnership deal with Iraq, including a status of forces agreement that would then replace the existing Security Council mandate authorizing the presence of the U.S.-led multinational forces in Iraq, will become a sworn obligation for the next president. It will become just another piece of the complex global security framework involving a hundred or so countries with which Washington now has bilateral defense or security cooperation agreements. Last month, Sen. Hillary Clinton urged Bush not to commit to any such agreement without congressional approval. The president said nothing about that on Saturday, but Lute said last fall that the Iraqi agreement would not likely rise to the level of a formal treaty requiring Senate ratification. Even so, it would be difficult if not impossible for future presidents to unilaterally breach such a pact.

As far as the number of U.S. troops that would remain in Iraq under such a pact, the administration is considering changes that could also pre-empt anything the Democrats have in mind… [O]ne Pentagon contractor who is working on the long-term U.S. plans for Iraq says that the administration is considering new configurations of forces that could reduce troop levels to well under 100,000, perhaps to as few as 60,000, by the time the next president takes office.

The agreement’s set to be signed next July, in the thick of the campaign. McCain might be able to sell it but anyone else as nominee is going to reap the whirlwind of having to defend a new long-term commitment on the stump, especially if Bush does an end-around the Senate in signing it. A big drawdown to accompany it will sweeten the pot, certainly, but Bush is obviously willing to gamble the GOP’s chances next year on getting this done. A little “nuance” to bear in mind as you view the clip. Click the image to watch.

DAMN!

This is the reason I should have plopped my thoughts on my own blog last summer.

I left it here on HA somewhere saying the Dems will take credit for the surge success.

McCain is only a little better, constantly siphoning off credit from the General and the philosopher-warriors in his inner circle to his own perpetually-running, perpetually-political self. His only advantage over Hillary is that he did not actively seek the failure of those men’s mission.

Obviously those warriors don’t care, they just want to do their jobs and do them well. It’s sad that their success is co-opted so greedily by the do-nothings in the upper echelon, but one can hope they will be called on it by the American voters.

Umm didnt she refuse to vote against the “betrayus” ad ?

William Amos on January 13, 2008 at 8:48 PM

It just goes to show, the Dems will take a win as long as they can take credit for it.

Talk about major spinning.

Clinton is such a worn out hack, peddling her recycled Marxist, revised utopian, pyramid scheme that in any half sane, half informed and indeed half interested society she would not only be summarily dismissed but actually laughed out of the building. The fact that she hates virtually every characteristic that makes our society unique, is diametrically opposed to the rugged individualism that informed the seminal ethos of our society and truly believes that she and her ilk alone can guide the rest of us unenlightened primates to the commune of oneness, is not lost on those of us who actully are charged with operating in the real world, i.e. the world where the wonderfully concocted tele-tubby like policies of those residing in the thin air towers of academia and governement meet the real world case of highly motivated cultists salivating for a chance to either blow you up or blow themselves up on you. Clinton probably would seek to cover them in her health insurance plan…

Vortek on January 13, 2008 at 8:59 PM

Alternate reality…..

d1carter on January 13, 2008 at 9:01 PM

In any normal universe, Hillary taking credit for the surge would be risible, but with the MSM behind her repeating this meme endlessly…

tlclark on January 13, 2008 at 9:03 PM

I heard this snippet on the radio while I was driving home from Mass this afternoon and almost went off the road. If Russert had a brain in his head, he’d have followed up with, “Well Senator Clinton, if, as you claim, the Iraqi government is following your every word, particularly as it relates to removing troops from Iraq, do you suppose Al Qaeda might be listening as well, and what, do you suppose, do they they’re going to think and do as a result of your foreign policy pronouncements?”

D2Boston on January 13, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Sorry for the typo… she makes me that incensed! The question should end, “What do you suppose they’re going to think and do as a result of your foreign policy pronouncements?”

D2Boston on January 13, 2008 at 9:05 PM

the dumbest Clinton supporter

Is there any other kind?

The fact is, troop levels are increasingly out of her hands and nobody knows it better than the Iraqis she cynically pretends to be influencing:

It’s not ‘cynicism’ and nothing is ‘out of your hands’ when you are pathological narcissists of the first order like the Clintons.

labrat on January 13, 2008 at 9:10 PM

By the time the Clintons are done rewriting history, they will both be responsible for my cereal still being cruchy, even after soaking in milk for five full minutes.

Yeah, he’s an effective Ipecac substitute too.

These people are sickening all the way around. Except for Thompson. That guy gets it. Anybody who WANTS to be president and will go to any lengths to get there is highly suspect in my book.

Fred is getting my support from here on out but I suppose I’ll be in the voting booth come election time debating whether to write in my 7th grade gym teacher or Kermit the Frog.

Metro on January 13, 2008 at 9:21 PM

Russert Dissects her. Hillary’s defense is everything is ‘taken out of context’.

What’s taken out of context is Hillary Clinton. She belongs to the Bolsheviks and Lenin’s Russia.

petefrt on January 13, 2008 at 9:22 PM

It’s going to be fun making Hillary flip flop you tube vids in the general election….so many to choose from.

On basically every issue we can show clips of her saying both opposing views.

Hillary: Why commit to one position when you can take both and please everyone?

HaraldHardrada on January 13, 2008 at 9:23 PM

First of all, Hillary is a fake and an opportunist. She has been in this long enough to not be coming up with convenient information now. She’s a Senator for god sakes. She should not have any surprises now! What does she do in the office she currently occupies? and you people consider her for the Presidency? OMFG!

I give her zero credit for anything she has done in office. What? She got 100 kids free dental fillings 6 months ago? oh sure, make her ruler of the free world now. Get a grip people. She, and no one else really meets the requirements on this go-round. Who will make sure our arsenals are safe?
Is this all we can offer? We can’t tolerate another Clinton session, 4 years nor 8. Man this place is in big big trouble. Im sorry, but this country is in more trouble than the previous Clinton years. Go ahead socker-moms, put another Clinton in there. Lord help us.

johnnyU on January 13, 2008 at 9:23 PM

The Clintons are behind ‘The End of the World Initiative.’ Financed by Soros. Executed by the Democrat Party. If they don’t get back into the White House they’ve promised to end the world. If they do get back into the White House they’ve promised to save the world. It starts to make sense… No? The question is… Will Billy Bob take the time to get laid before he saves the world or will he be in a hurry and just resort to Backroom Cigar Politics?

I still think we should run Laura Bush this time around…according to the dems she, like Hillary, is the most experienced candidate.

a credit-taking opportunity only the dumbest Clinton supporter could fall for.

The Clenis is the master of taking other peoples credit so we would have that to look forward too also.

oakpack on January 13, 2008 at 9:33 PM

Dang. At the end of it she says she suspected Hussein’s programs would have been shown to be a charade. That’s Huckabee insightful right there! She should be very glad she rarely has to deal with an adversarial press.

Talon on January 13, 2008 at 9:54 PM

Devil’s Advocate: To put a finer point to the nuance, isn’t there a possibility, given past Dem statements re: withdrawal – and Maliki’s reaction to them – that Hillary’s proposal may have at least indirectly prompted a quicker resolution?

All the MSM have have touted her as ‘inevitable’, afterall.

James OK on January 13, 2008 at 9:56 PM

D2Boston on January 13, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Amen. My point in the comment above is that these people are so self absorbed that they think they can speak and alter world events just because of who they are – classic narcissists.

Remember Bill’s comment:

“I can’t make her younger, taller, male…”

“I can’t make her…”: As if he created her. These people are seriously psychologically disturbed which is what makes them so dangerous.

labrat on January 13, 2008 at 10:07 PM

This woman is a psychotic moonbat…

Snooper on January 13, 2008 at 10:09 PM

What’s clear to me is that she will NEVER listen to the Military brass. It’s her way or the highway!

And did you see her squirm in her chair when Russert stated the surge WAS WORKING?! How dare he!

Domino on January 13, 2008 at 10:09 PM

You got to admit though, she must have a very large pair of shiny brass ones dangling.

She is without shame. LOL

Dr. Gecko on January 13, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Laura Bush knows just as much, if not more, but she wasn’t a Senator, so big deal. This means to me Hillary needs to go back to finding out why her husband chases other women.

johnnyU on January 13, 2008 at 10:39 PM

The most benficial thing she could do for this country is be the nominee and energize the whole GOP base at elections. That’s the best contribution she could make. But, it still doesn’t address the Huck problem.

a capella on January 13, 2008 at 10:40 PM

Dear Hill,

The surge directed by General Petraeus and executed by our troops has turned the tide in Iraq, not your running for office, you lying arrogant political whore.

I’m talking about the surge your party said would never work, could never work and still hasn’t worked.

Yeah, that surge.

GFY.

labrat on January 14, 2008 at 12:11 AM

So she said she was against any “pre-emptive” stike on Iraq. Does that mean she would have waited until we were attacked first? If she’s not lying (insert pun here), then she’d as irresponsible as the last Democrat we had as Commander in Chief.

That should wake some people up.

JetBlast on January 14, 2008 at 12:23 AM

Hillary uses nerve gas, no one is waking up,..

Griz on January 14, 2008 at 12:24 AM

It’s probably been said before…..listening to her and considering her presidentail material takes a willing suspension of disbelief

Mallard T. Drake on January 14, 2008 at 1:06 AM

That is just outright insulting. And this woman thinks she has what it takes to be CinC? As a veteran Soldier, there’s no way I could respect a woman like her, nor anyone that thinks like her, and as a man seriously contemplating a return to service to go to Iraq, it comes as a double slap in the face. Her absolutely dishonorable and Clintonian insult to General Petraeus was shameful enough, but to try taking credit for the man’s work, and the hard work of the Soldiers and Marines she openly maligns with her unwarranted superior, dismissive attitude? Far too much to let stand. This is something that needs to be said in the same forum that she made this dishonorable, disingenuous statement: on national TV. If the Republicans (and even the opposing democrats, like Obama) don’t JUMP on her for this, that’s just that much less respect I have for them. McCain will be especially deserving of a demotion in respect, considering he was a combat veteran, himself, as a Navy airman. Someone needs to call her on this bullcrap (even if it’s not a politician, and Michelle Malkin says it on FOXNews), and tell her (to her face, if at all possible) that the only thing that requires a suspension of disbelief is her statement that she’d be good for America as a president, and that she’s accomplished anything positive as the liberal senator of a state she has no roots in.

Virus-X on January 14, 2008 at 1:14 AM

HA! I was hoping you’d get around to this. I thought Bryan’s take on this earlier was a bit shallow. But as usual, AP nails it.

I almost fell off my chair when she said the Iraqis follow everything she says. She is one evil power hungry narcissistic woman.

I was jumping for joy watching TR keep on her about her Iraq war vote. She was blathering on about her judgment was better than Obama’s and TR then turned it on her by showing how Obama showed better judgment than her on the war because he was always against it. Then she said judgment wasn’t the end all and be all of the qualities required to be POTUS.

He had her twisting in the wind for almost the entire hour.

Suprise! A clinton tries to rewrite history again. /s

PaKeystoner on January 14, 2008 at 4:50 AM

One thing to think about. What if this moonbat becomes President. She would be Commander in Chief of the armed forces.

After calling one of our finest in uniform, General David Petraeus a liar, she would be loathed by the military. Oh, thats right, she already is.

tazmebro on January 14, 2008 at 6:12 AM

Thanks so much Hillary, we appreciate everything you did for us. We understand that no matter how many combat tours we have, we are just soldiers who don’t know the big picture like the worldly members of congress and who’s opinions have no place in politics (unless we agree with you and then we’ll got on TV or be paraded around the YKos convention to show how smart you are). Thank you for allowing us to be paws to your political ambitions. If you hadn’t held up the budget and used the war (and us) to raise political capital… just think of where’d we’d be now?

From the bottom of my stomach err…. heart, thank you.

BadBrad on January 14, 2008 at 6:47 AM

That Marxist dolt has completely lost contact with reality. The fascinating part is that she actually believes herself.

Who is Hitlery going to have as her Sec. Def. Angila Davis?

Then heads will roll as the Who To’s v. To Do’s takes shape.

MSGTAS on January 14, 2008 at 9:08 AM

I’m just sitting here thinking how much I loathe Al Qaeda, America’s external enemy, and how much I despise the Democratic Party, America’s internal enemy. Today’s Democrats make the treacherous Copperhead Democrats of the Civil War era look downright patriotic.

DavePa on January 14, 2008 at 10:05 AM

Every time I think she has said the dumbest thing I ever heard, she goes and open her trap again. How smug does she have to be to think that the Iraqi Govt is following her every move! This is insane, she has a good chance of becoming POTUS. We are in BIG TROUBLE. We need Fred Thompson more than ever. http://www.fred08.com
