Metamucil, huh? Fred responds to Huckabee; Update: Huck defends Metamucil joke

In which Mike Huckabee earns a second bear mauling. This is from Friday’s Mark Levin Show.

Fred’s campaign has hauled in over $800k in the past couple of days. He’s doing something right.

Update: “I could see him staring down our enemies.”

Update (AP): Revenge at last for Mornin’ Joe’s “work the pole” crack — Jeri versus Scarborough.

Update (AP): Huck 1, Fred 0!

“You have to understand the context of the show….It’s not quite as irreverent as Imus…not quite Stephen Colbert but it’s serious topics with an edge.”

“I really do believe if people can’t have some sense of humor as they approach this stuff, then it causes everybody to be so locked down and consultant driven that their campaigns become so boring because all they’re going to do is give this robotic answer to everything that’s very carefully scripted. I promise you, you won’t have moments like this,” Huckabee said, gesturing to the handful of reporters that had gathered around him for an on-the-record conversation that would last about 40 minutes…

“If I thought I couldn’t be a human being. That I gotta wait till six handlers tell me what I can and can’t say and I have to read it, you know, it’s not worth it.”

Is it too late to hold out hope? Polls show Fred! very low, and not gaining, even losing ground. But can I take comfort in the horrible polling from NH?

no post-debate poll has been taken in SC yet…

stlpatriot on January 12, 2008 at 10:18 AM

I think any of the major Republican candidates can beat the Glacier, except Huckabee, but Fred’s our best chance against the Obamamessiah. Can you imagine a debate between these two? A string of gaseous Hallmark-card platitudes about the audacity of hope, and how we must hope for audacity, and how audacious hoping can give us the audacity to make change to our hopes and hope for change, rebutted by Fred’s policy-specific fuel-air bombs, mixed in with a wry Cracker Barrel chuckle or two. Nothing is a sure thing in politics, but I *really* want to see that debate.

Bwahahaha!!!

Huck: Meet Fred.
Huck ass: Meet Fred’s foot.
Fred’s foot: Stomps mud hole in Huck’s ass.
The rest of the country: Laughs manically.

When Fred took Huck the the woodshed at the debate, I was going crazy! My wife thought I had gone nuts. I was especially gleeful when he called him on the “Christian Leader” issue. Subtle, but effective. Huck wants to be pastor in chief, and that is how he is running.

I wouldn’t trust the polls. NH showed just how inaccurate they can be. The only poll that matters is the one where we pull the lever, mark the ballot or hang the chad. :)

From what I’ve read, Fred! always seems to start off slow then roars into the lead. Part of the problem was the MSM doing all they could to knock down Fred! before he could really get going. That last debate may have shot the MSM strategy down in glorious flames. ;)

It does look like his donations are picking up and if Guliani and Romney create matching craters out of their campaigns, Fred’s chances go way way up.

Personally I think the next targets for demolition will be Huckaboob and Mcamnesty.

Fred’s the artist. Huck is the canvas.

lorien1973 on January 12, 2008 at 10:36 AM

A Canadian perspective:

If Huckabee wins the Republican ticket, would it make sense for Fred to run as an Independent? He certainly would be the only conservative in a 3-way race. He would also be able to box Huckabee and whoever the Democrat nominee is as being two sides of the same coin.

rhuppertz on January 12, 2008 at 10:38 AM

Mark Levin criticizing juvenile humor is a bit much to take.

The man is a one person junior high school boy gym class.

Having said that, good retort from Thompson.

SteveMG on January 12, 2008 at 10:38 AM

Let’s hope Fred keeps up the vigor.
Huckabee will be tough to beat. You may not like alot of his positions, but charisma carries alot of weight.

Your Jewish Master on January 12, 2008 at 10:38 AM

You know, he may be right about his campaign strategy, he may be wrong, but at least he didn’t get caught up in the MSM/other candidate promoted hype and hysteria about having to campaign like crazy for over a year before the primaries even started.

I would think people would praise him for that, instead of the “too late” thing that has now replaced “no fire in the belly.” You know, if you don’t support the guy’s candidacy, that’s OK, just do it based on real stuff, not just regurgitated meaningless MSM crap.

I’m actually kinda disgusted at Malkin right now. Fred at first had no fire in the belly, then she gleefully repeated the false politico stories, now she’s shifted to the “too late” meme. It appears that Ms. Malkin spends too much time around MSM folks.

MItt’s a crybaby, Fred’s “too late,” I assume she doesn’t support McCain based on amnesty, surely she’s not supporting pro-choice Rudy…..does that mean Ms. Malkin is a Huckster supporter? Or is she just going to bash all the GOP candidates?

Zorro on January 12, 2008 at 10:47 AM

Is it too late to hold out hope?

It’s only too late to hold out hope if we keep saying it’s too late to hold out hope.
From the beginning, pundits and the media have wondered whether Fred could live up to the hype, if he’s too lazy, if he really wants the job, etc, and we conservatives have parroted these talking points. It’s become a self-fulfilling prophecy. We don’t help him by wondering “Does he have a chance? Is he going to drop out?” We help him by showing people that he is a viable candidate with a strong and wide support base.

Whoa, the NRA’s gonna go nuts:

Government files amicus — on DC’s side!
POSTED BY DAVID HARDY · 11 JANUARY 2008 08:41 PM
PDF here.

Quick read: Gov’t says, yes, it’s an individual right. BUT we join with DC in asking Court to reverse the DC Circuit, because it applied strict scrutiny to the DC law. It should only have applied an intermediate standard. That is, the legal position of the US is that DC CIrcuit was wrong, a complete ban on handguns is NOT per se unconstitutional, it all depends on how good a reason DC can prove for it.

As I read this, the (Bush) Dept of Justice is asking that the Court hold it to be an individual right, but not strike the DC gun law, instead sending it back down to the trial court to take evidence on everything from how much the District needs the law to whether people can defend themselves without pistols and just what the DC trigger lock law means. THEN maybe it can begin another four year trek to the Supremes. That is, the DoJ REJECTS the DC Circuit position that an absolute, flat, ban on handguns violates the Second Amendment, and contends that it might just be justified, it all depends on the evidence.

There was a saying during my years in DC that the GOP operated on two principles: screw your friends and appease your enemies. Yup.

I’ve seen quite a few Rudy and Romney supporters say that their candidates’ positions as weak on the 2nd amendment aren’t really important. I’m not sure a whole lot of GOP voters are going to agree with that any more.

funky chicken on January 12, 2008 at 11:02 AM

It’s ‘too late’ for Fred. just like Ronald Reagan was ‘too old’. It’s time we stop letting the MSM whistle the tune to this dance like we stopped them in 1980.

Too late? Well, I’m sorry it’s too late for Fred to show the fiscal irresponsability of blowing huge compaign dollars a year before the first primary on hype that is buying nothing for the others (John, Mitt, Giuliani and Hillary) now.

wccawa on January 12, 2008 at 11:37 AM

The dirty secret is it is hard to accurately poll a primary. The unpredictability of who will turn out and what the mix of voters will be makes polling a primary election like reading chicken entrails — ugly, smelly and not very enlightening. Our media culture endows polls — especially exit polls — with scientific precision they simply don’t have.

Sir Andrew on January 12, 2008 at 11:36 AM

Mean spirited? No – not even close to mean. Mean would have been, “Fred has cancer and wont live long enough to complete his term.” That’s mean. Mean would be, “Fred spent 6 months waiting for America to beg him to run — he has no interest in meeting the American People one on one, and he intends to spend the rest of this election poking holes in people who have a real chance, to the benefit of the person that he wants elected.”

Mean would have been to immitate him, coughing and grunting — it’s an easy immitation to do. That would have been mean because Fred’s a charactor that can easily be mocked (easy to admire as well.)

Anyway, that would have been mean — what Huck did was nowhere near mean.

I really don’t see Fred making a metamucil crack about Huckabee, but I could be wrong. In any case, I wouldn’t be supportive of that. The main reason I support Fred is because even when he is making a joke he is talking about substance. Fred’s focus is on the issues when many others, including Huckabee, is process. Just try to get Huckabee to respond to the substance of the discussion. Why exactly, Mr. Huckabee, do many Fiscal and National Defense conservatives think you are a liberal? Why do they think you are a populist?

Also, I didn’t hear ANY whining from Fred. Fred just stated that Huckabee doesn’t want to talk about the issues. Pretty clear to me.

For all my disagreements with Bush on policy, he brings the proper dignity to the office. The Laura Bush jokes at the WH correspondents’ dinner were funny and lighthearted and appropriate to the humor/roast environment. Using potty humor to lash out at a rival because that’s all you’ve got? Jr. High. Or ghetto.

Wise Golden on January 12, 2008 at 12:10 PM

Maybe it’s time for Mr. Personality Huckster to start talking about his political record, his views, etc., instead of cracking lame jokes. He’s running for President, not a spot on a tv show. Humor is fine, but that’s not what we’re here for. I agree with Laura Ingram on that. Let’s get serious.

However, I don’t think the slick Huckster really wants too much focus on what he’s really about. It would show he’s not a conservative but a RINO who is more of a liberal than not.

katieanne on January 12, 2008 at 12:11 PM

Fred’ comment is political speech for, “I don’t like the subject that we are on.”

Wise Golden on January 12, 2008 at 11:58 AM

Ah, I see. So, Fred wants to talk about issues and not personal attacks regarding metamucil and you deride him. Damn you Fred for wanting to talk about issues in this election. Damn you!!!

kerrhome on January 12, 2008 at 12:12 PM

Because they were searching out that all too important liberal NEA endorsement my friend. It’s very key to their campaign strategy to get as many liberal endorsements as they can. ;)

kerrhome on January 12, 2008 at 12:08 PM

You don’t say. Is that part of the Reagan coalition thingy? It must have changed in Arkansas.

No, what I am saying is, when somebody insults my intelligence by calling a press conference to show me a negative ad he doesn’t want to run because the Bible tells him it would be wrong, I want to vomit.

TheBigOldDog on January 12, 2008 at 12:12 PM

It was off color and a stupid thing to say, and typical of the utter lack of substance that is Huck. Joking about bowel movements when you are running for president is utterly pathetic. When his first response to criticism is potty humor something is wrong.

Nashoa on January 12, 2008 at 12:10 PM

Nah — it was kind of funny.

People like you and other huckalemmings only embolden my stance against huckabee.. Lets make it clear dude, Myself and many others here would rather vote McVain than huckabee if there was nobody else left.

Huckabee is the liberals “useful idiot”.. Pump him up as the great christian leader, then absolutely butt-slam him come election time on evolution, the bible, etc… HE’s exactly what the libs want man, why dont people freaking see that…

We’re in for a world of hurt if he gets the nomination.

Fred, Mitt, Rudy, McVain… In that order…IMHO

Ya know, Texas, I saw the same thing there, and was crafting just the right retort…but then I saw yours and…you nailed it, bud. Still chuckling here….

Allahpundit on January 12, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Be honest, AP. He was asked about the Metamucil comment by Levin. It wasn’t the stupid comment that was the problem. It’s Huckabee’s response to recitation of his own words and policies. Instead of answering the issues, he stoops to an ad homimen attack.

If Fred had made a crack like this about Huck, you’d all be slapping your knees and hooting over it

But he didn’t, did he. That’s the difference between Fred Thompson and Mr. Wiggle Brows.

TheBigOldDog on January 12, 2008 at 12:15 PM

It seems to me that Gov Huckabee does well in the debates only when he sticks to non-policy issues. He does well when he is busy making quips, emotional appeal, or talk on religion. When the Gov begins to get into issues of policy, I believe this is where he begins to have trouble. He begins to have trouble because he is not good at hiding his non-conservative qualities well and it shows.

Also, I found, in the more recent debates since the start of the primary process, that Gov Huckabee does not do well responding to other candidates’ points in the debates. So, to put in my two cents worth, Gov Huckabee will continue to do well generally because of his faith, but because of weak substance beyond either religion or other identity politics, he will not go beyond third place and won’t pick up enough delegates to win the nomination.

Weebork on January 12, 2008 at 12:15 PM

I guess Drudge got the Fredmentum memo, too? First time ever he’s had Fred as the banner that I recall…

SouthernGent on January 12, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Hey Wise Golden, why do you think that 80% of the Arkansas Republican Assembly endorsed Fred Thompson and Huckabee only got 4%. Do you think the Republicans in Arkansas know something we don’t? Seriously? Can you answer that without some crafty little Huckabee joke?

kerrhome on January 12, 2008 at 12:15 PM

Are you saying that it should be easy for us to accept Fred’s insults becuase he is so wise? That sounds like Clinton-speech to me.

Wise Golden on January 12, 2008 at 12:08 PM

Criticizing the Huckster’s political positions is an insult? How Clintonian.

TheBigOldDog on January 12, 2008 at 12:15 PM

No, I’d say it worked because he won Iowa. May not have got your vote, but it got the job done and without cost to the campaign.

Wise Golden on January 12, 2008 at 12:16 PM

Huck is funnier than Fred, and generally speaking Huck is a much more gifted extemporaneous speaker. That does not make him more qualified to be President, but it is an undeniable asset.

Then, you are too lazy and dependent on pundits and polls to do your thinking for you.

Captain America on January 12, 2008 at 12:02 PM

Riiight. So if not for pundits we never would have noticed Fred’s lethargy, or his dilatory decision to officially announce his candidacy. And if not for pundits we never would have noticed that he finally perked up in the SC debate!

Tell me again – who is it that is using “lazy” thinking here?

TheBigOldDog on January 12, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Wise Golden on January 12, 2008 at 12:13 PM

No, because it showed Huck for the self righteous hypocrite he is. Why do you think all the reporters laughed at him? He wasn’t making a joke, then. It made them salivate for a general election with him as the GOP pick.

a capella on January 12, 2008 at 12:21 PM

I go Fred, Rudy, Mitt, McCain. It’s a real shame, but a whole lot of mainstream, moderate Christians see Mormons about the same way they see the other folks who come door to door…Jehovah’s Witnesses. I don’t agree, but it is what it is.

Now if Romney had 4 or 8 years as veep, people will see him working hard and being “normal,” and the Mormon concerns would be drastically reduced. The only people who would bring it up would be the 10-15% hardcore Huckster supporter types. Losing their votes doesn’t bother me much.

I also have huge concerns that Romney isn’t willing to dirty his white-gloved hands with confrontation. He wants to stay serenely above the fray, and his supporters appear to be OK with that…repeated calls for Fred! to take on Huckster and McCain harshly so their man can coast to the nomination based on his good looks and business experience concern me. Good looks ain’t gonna beat Obama or Hillary.

funky chicken on January 12, 2008 at 12:22 PM

date (AP): Huck 1, Fred 0!

Another win for the left… Dems are gonna have a field freakin day come general time…
