Canada’s Star Chamber quizzes Ezra Levant over the Mohammed cartoons

posted at 4:46 pm on January 12, 2008 by Allahpundit

The case is old but the outrage is evergreen, especially now that Mark Steyn’s facing his own thoughtcrime hearing before a similar tribunal. The Western Standard, with Levant at the helm, published the cartoons a year and a half ago; his courage was rewarded with a complaint by a radical imam seeking to coopt the west’s civil-rights machinery to silence speech critical of Islam — an increasingly familiar storyline, needless to say. Today was the hearing, which Levant celebrated by … well, just look. I recommend clicking here, starting halfway down the page with that same post, and then working your way up. He’s posted video of the proceedings, too — against the wishes of the commission, which is at least true to the spirit of the process — but if you can’t spare the time, at least read his opening statement.

This clip’s my favorite. How clean, quiet, and banal the setting is as the government politely asks a member of the press to explain his intentions. Surreal, although CJ’s adjective is better.

You know, if you really want to strike a blow against Islam, thuja, how about rooting for this guy to prevail so these jihadists will know this crap doesn’t work?

MsU, I sent this out today to a bunch of prominent people with huge e-mail distribution lists and asked to be disseminated. This information should become one of those ustoppable e-mails around the world. Every freedom-loving person should take an example from the courage of Mr. Levant.

thuja, get a grip. This man is eloquently fighting for such a noble cause and you come in here and diminish it with utter nonsense.

Entelechy on January 13, 2008 at 1:35 AM

Great! With all of this online exposure, it’s only a matter of time until Ezra Levant attracts the attention of someone in America that wants to make a movie or TV show out of his courageous story!

Of course, any good American Hollywood writer will have the good sense to make some minor changes. For example, the Mohammed cartoons controversy would better connect with the public if it was an edgy magazine that publishes a “Jesus Drives a Hybrid” editorial that makes the publisher instant enemies of some rich and powerful politicians whose primary sources of PAC money come from the CEO of a local oil drilling company and the crazy fundamentalist pastor of a Christian megachurch with a huge TV ministry. That way, when the publisher has his career, reputation, and home destroyed by all of the dirty socio-political smears and outright violence perpetrated by the right-wing American patriarchy near the end of the third act, he can make one last passionate and pedantic speech justifying his publishing of the controversial editorial as nothing less than the beautiful edifice of free speech built directly on top of the cornerstone laid by Thomas Jefferson’s faith in the Bill of Rights, Constitution, and the people of the United States. The pathetic and stupid right-wing idiots will see that they’ve been wrong their entire lives because they have never truly been aware of the very basis of our nation.

And after you see this movie, you’ll know that the Constitution of the United States of America gives a writer the total freedom to do whatever he wants whenever he wants to do it!

I’m sure Aaron Sorkin will write this much more commercially-viable version of Ezra Levant’s story… well, I mean, as soon as the WGA tells Sorkin that it’s okay to write it.

Beleive me, Ezra knows that he does not stand a chance in hell of winning in front of the AHRC. He is, without doubt, waiting for the judgement and fine so he can refuse it and go through the real court system.

Jim708 on January 12, 2008 at 9:16 PM

You’re right, Jim. He knows he won’t win in front of the AHRC. He wants this case to go before the Supreme Court of Canada so that it will be felt ’round the world and all over Canada. He still needs out support.

Other HRC cases I’ve read about that have been appealed to a court have lost. Unless Canada is looking to overrule its many court decisions, he doesn’t have much of a chance. Canada seriously sucks.

I thought that Alberta was the most right-wing province of Canada. Are we sure he’ll lose at the AHRC?
Anyway, we and Levant have to hope he loses at the AHRC, so that his case can become widely known and hopefully discredit the “Human Rights Commissions”. Also Levant needs to to appeal to real court.

Jim Treacher on January 13, 2008 at 1:35 AM

I’m certainly hope that Levant prevails in the long run, though as I point in my last comment that we all need to realize that Levant losing this round is strategically desirable. My point is simply that we shouldn’t be talking in terms of Islam being a admirable religion.
Let me slightly digress to avoid having to watch the Levant videos over again. I don’t remember exactly what Levant said, but I have heard Bush say Islam is a “religion of peace”–which is equivalent to saying to saying Nazism is an ideology of racial tolerance. Levant was being overly generous towards Islam in a similar way. In the long run, when we lie about Islam for some short-term goal like looking reasonable before the AHRC, we hurt ourselves in the long-run.

Blaise on January 13, 2008 at 5:57 PM

This is my first comment as a newbie: It was heartening to see that there are some actual brass “spheres” remaining in our much neutered northern neighbors. While we continually gag down the many hateful expressions against Christianity that come down the pike on a daily basis, these slave owning pedophiles from a “civilization” that still thinks wiping one’s self with the left hand is superior to toilet paper have made us criminals in our own house if we dare say/speak/write/draw anything that they deem to be offensive. It is quite alright for them to fully exercise their heinous cult at the expense of all who unfortunately find themselves under it’s political power but let one of us bacon eating infidels say something that casts their cult in an accurate light… Well, I really hope that more people wake up before it is too late. I’m writing now from the land of two rivers. They never made it past the dark ages here. That’s the gospel truth.

I couldn’t help noticing the body language of the female interrogator. She hates Ezra’s guts - probably because she realises this is one tough hombre who ain’t gonna back down – and uh-oh, this could be the end of her cushy job and her only chance in life of wielding power!

Ezra – a fellow Canadian that all Canuckleheads shoud be proud of!

Positively 4th Street on January 13, 2008 at 9:07 PM

This was a good clip to watch. I regret I waited so long to watch it. Unbelievable. I am sure the woman asking the questions, as quiet and innocent as she presented, thinks herself ever so caring, reasonable, fair and compassionate, so certain her work is for the good of the order. Sickening.

Self-delusion.

None of you are really cheering for free speech. You’re cheering for speech that you find “cool” in a grade school sort of way.

“OOOHH!! He said your mama!”

It’s stupid. Sort of an MTV version of the free expression that defines true civilization.

Plus, as someone above pointed out, the real test is when we’re faced with the Ernst Zündel’s and Ward Churchill’s of the world, not guys like Ezra, who are just pandering to a hateful audience and then claiming martyrdom at the hands of the mainstream.

How many tribunals, commissions, boards and/or interrogations was Churchill put through? Answer: none. Churchill was fired by his empolyer for falsifying his resume and other wrong doings (i.e. plagiarism).

Zündel was arrested in this country for overstaying his visa (something more people should be arrested on) he was deported from Canada because he’d left the country for too long and was no longer considered a permanent resident. He was arrested in Germany for violating anti-Nazi laws and inciting a riot.

In your pompous adolescent attempt to condemn the people on this thread for standing by a man who is being attacked for excercising his God given right to free speach, by picking two people you think no one would stand up for, you over looked two things. One: Zündel’s website is still up and running — the last post on it is dated Dec. 16 — therefore no one is preventing him from expressing himself. Two: Churchill is not being prevented from speaking his poison either, his last article was published at lefturn.o-g on June 16 of last year and has a new book coming out (if it hasn’t come out already).

Now go back to the daily kos.

srhoades on January 14, 2008 at 9:33 AM

Liberty is a muscle that must be exercised regularly. Ezra does. But so many of us take the 1st Amendment for granted; free speech has become an option that we mostly choose to waive for the sake of getting along, not rocking the boat, not hurting somebody’s feelings. But in doing so, we are already halfway to slavery. OK, we mouth off here, where it’s safe, but it’s out there in the real world where we have to stand up and be real, stuck sideways up the butt jerks for Liberty.

dhimwit on January 14, 2008 at 9:38 AM

Actually, he probably has a new string of made up and/or non attributed quotes coming out…..

dean_acheson on January 14, 2008 at 9:53 AM

This is stunning.

Anyone want to guess at the chances that the next interrogation will be recorded.

I’ll wager that the next one will be so closed that Ezra Levant won’t even be allowed to attend. They don’t really need his testimony anyway.

The little fascist will explain, “This was a necessary step that we took in order to insure Mr. Levants privacy”.

I am not sure I saw the same clip because that is not the point I got. The point is that free protected speach can offend. Not that it was his intent to offend, but that if it was he still has the right to publish what he did. He is right.
I thought political correctness was bad but what is happening now with things like this and the libel suits is frightening.

Don’t forget that the same nonsense is happening to Mark Steyn and Macleans magazine, only they have to face 3 commissions – Ontario, British Columbia and Canada. Mark’s site is steynonline and he has hilariously documented what is happening to him.
