Video: Snow in Baghdad

It was a year ago this week that Michelle and I were in Baghdad. It was cold and rainy most of the time we were there, but it didn’t snow. Supposedly it hasn’t snowed in Iraq’s capital in about a century.

Blowback

Its a Ramadan Miracle!

Either that or Al Gore is visiting.

BohicaTwentyTwo on January 11, 2008 at 1:58 PM

Did it stick?

Vizzini on January 11, 2008 at 2:01 PM

Good thing we have global warming!!!! Or else the whole city could be one solid block of ice instead being covered in a pretty dusting of snow.

USBB on January 11, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Hell Freezes over!

Egfrow on January 11, 2008 at 2:05 PM

YOu remember all those “When Hell freezes over” comments? Just sayin’…

AZCON on January 11, 2008 at 2:05 PM

All the bombings have caused an abundance of greenhouse gasses which has elevated the effects of Global Warming, resulting in the sun not being able to penetrate the skies, which has caused snow.

Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Now, we have to halt the war as it’s causing Global Warming….listen to the Paulbots sing…

Fuzzball on January 11, 2008 at 2:07 PM

It’s obviously another Zionist-Eskimo conspiracy to drive the good-natured Arabs from their land.

askheaves on January 11, 2008 at 2:07 PM

Another victory for “Global Warming (TM)” – a trademark of the AlGore enrichment fund

Canadian Imperialist Running Dog on January 11, 2008 at 2:08 PM

How long before someone on Kos jokes about how Cheney must have been letting W play with the weather machine!?!

Hillary tears. Is she visiting?

infidel on January 11, 2008 at 2:14 PM

As it is interpreted in the qur’an: Snow in Baghdad means Death to America!

Gordon_Freeman on January 11, 2008 at 2:14 PM

Snow in Baghdad is pretty crazy. Northern Iraq is a completely different story. I was a primary instructor for a while for the Iraqi Border Patrol and there were literally some days we couldn’t train at all due to the amount of snow there.

davenp35 on January 11, 2008 at 2:16 PM

‘never in living memory, has snow fallen ….’

delighted residents have declared it an omen of peace. http://www.livenews.com.au/Articles/2008/01/11/Snow_in_Baghdad_a_sign_of_peace

It’s only because of the Marines Pat Dollard captured in Young Americans that Lt. Duffy could even consider taking his body armor off. http://www.matt-sanchez.com/2008/01/hollywood-and-i.html

.
GO FRED!!!! because Snow falls in Baghdad!!!, & they don’t need their BodyArmor!

lobosan5 on January 11, 2008 at 2:16 PM

Damn it, now all we’re going to hear in the media is how our troops are being attacked by insurgents throwing snowballs!

Torch on January 11, 2008 at 2:17 PM

Snow in Bagdad, Climate Change, Climate Change! The sky is falling!

D*mned global warming! It’s all George Bush’s fault! If only we’d listened to the Goracle.

CarpeCanis on January 11, 2008 at 2:17 PM

Finally, all those purchased carbon OFFSETS are kicking in!

And you could be on to something. I wonder if this will be interpreted as some kind of sign in that part of the world.

Global warming comes wrapped in a white package.

right2bright on January 11, 2008 at 2:32 PM

I was going to say he’ll froze over, but I remember that Los Angelas and LAX got snow a few years ago.

Fred!

RobertInAustin on January 11, 2008 at 2:32 PM

Probably means they were planning a global warming meeting. Every time they have planned one of those meetings, record cold or snow has hit them…when will the ever learn, when will they learn.

right2bright on January 11, 2008 at 2:34 PM

But the Global Warmers are still insisting that we’re all going to die….. and soon ! Those Global Warming guys never rest. Buttheads !

Maxx on January 11, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Just another sign of the warming of the planet. The warmer it gets, the more snow you get.

Hening on January 11, 2008 at 2:44 PM

Damn that global warming…

stacman on January 11, 2008 at 2:44 PM

Fargo?

BKennedy on January 11, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Getting warm!

RushBaby on January 11, 2008 at 2:50 PM

Baghdad is being infected with NBC’s flavor of Global Warming conspiracy theory: ANY change in weather, or even any event in nature, is evidence of Global Warming.

Watch how NBC recently speculated confirmed that wildebeast migration is being affected.

Frozen Tex on January 11, 2008 at 3:07 PM

The earth is warming errrr cooling. Send us money to fix it.

Sincerely,

Al Gore, climate hustler

Metro on January 11, 2008 at 3:19 PM

It’s Global Warming, man (all pray to the Earth Mother and the Goddess within you!).

Gee, I’m scared — and not just because chicks that believe this stuff tend not to shave their pits.

Christoph on January 11, 2008 at 3:31 PM

CO2 emissions from US military = global climate change = snow in Baghdad = surge is not working = BDS = carbon credits = etc…

Something like that…

nottakingsides on January 11, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Don’t tell the Goracle…he might have an accident in his pants.

libhater on January 11, 2008 at 3:37 PM

Well the snow PROVES the surge isn’t working!! If we can’t even stop a few water crystals, how are we going to stop a civil war?

AverageJoe on January 11, 2008 at 3:49 PM

This is a sure sign that some idiot scheduled a Global Warming Conference in Iraq.

Have you noticed that these things always attract unseasonably cold weather??? Is a celestial Somebody trying to set straight these folks who think that man controls the weather with your tax dollars?

landlines on January 11, 2008 at 4:08 PM

love Day By Day.

Frozen Tex on January 11, 2008 at 3:07 PM

Frozen Tex, did you get my comment yesterday? You made Big Red come out of my nose with the Hillary dietary requirements… I think you were long gone because I didnt sign on til later. Thats STILL funny right there.

NickTx on January 11, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Well the weather neighbors outside are frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we’ve no place to go
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Pablo on January 11, 2008 at 4:20 PM

I question the timing

Opinionnation on January 11, 2008 at 4:22 PM

Sign from God? Let’s hope.

RobCon on January 11, 2008 at 4:27 PM

Don’t you see? Rising levels of carbon dioxide from the evil corporations and Republican SUVs melted the ice caps, killed all the polar bears and penguins (even the cute ones in that movie a few months ago), flooded coastal areas in a way that only inflicted loss upon women, children and people of color, eliminated twenty species of butterflies, created huge oil revenues for BushHitlerCheneyHalliburton and has now caused climatic-shifts-of-doom(tm). Aka, snow in Baghdad.

It’s your fault. Conservative killer of Mother Gaia. Global Warming is your fault, which is why it’s snowing in Baghdad.

What? You question my logic?

Montana on January 11, 2008 at 4:33 PM

NickTx on January 11, 2008 at 4:14 PM

Yeah, I saw. Sorry ’bout the Big Red; sounds uncomfortable.

Frozen Tex on January 11, 2008 at 4:44 PM

No AGW conference in Iraq, but apparently the Iraqi meteorology set has bought into the “consensus.”

http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idUSL1171501720080111?feedType=RSS&feedName=environmentNews&rpc=22&sp=true

Snow? Global warming. Hot? Global warming. Dry? Global warming. Flood? Global warming. Rash on my buttocks? Global warming. It’s universal!

iurockhead on January 11, 2008 at 4:54 PM

iurockhead on January 11, 2008 at 4:54 PM

How much does the Goracle have to pay to offset your rash?

Frozen Tex on January 11, 2008 at 5:04 PM

How much does the Goracle have to pay to offset your rash?

Frozen Tex on January 11, 2008 at 5:04 PM

That would be 5 carbuncle offsets, $8 each. Cheap at any price for a desk jockey like me.

iurockhead on January 11, 2008 at 5:12 PM

Ahh, crappy Baghdad winter weather. I remember Christmas Eve, 2004, sitting in a tower overlooking a detainee camp with the rain coming in sideways, somehow, so that even being in the exact middle of the tower I was getting wet. And then cold, ’cause it was 42 degrees. Merry frakking Christmas to me. Snow would’ve just been the icing on the cake.

LordDilly on January 11, 2008 at 5:13 PM

did John kerry whip out his $6000 ski’s?

malkinmania on January 11, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Good deal! I am hoping for a good, cold year, since I get there next month…

Does Bush care that our troops don’t have ear muffs and warming packs?

CliffHanger on January 11, 2008 at 10:47 PM

It’ll be a cold day in Baghdad when….
uh… I’ll start…

when Hillary wins in New Hampshire.
