Video: “A Whole New World”
posted at 6:30 pm on January 11, 2008 by Allahpundit
I saw this earlier at the Corner and have been suffering ever since. Thus, now you must share that suffering. That’s what being a Hot Air reader means. You’re a team player.
I say: Dubbed.

Dude sounds like a lady. I second; dubbed
RobCon on January 11, 2008 at 6:37 PM
I foresee a duet with Tay Zonday.
BlackCapitalist on January 11, 2008 at 6:37 PM
Not dubbed. There’s some slightly out of tune notes (not bad, just not 440hz) and the breathing is perfectly in sync. To put it this way: if it were dubbed, it’d take greater skill to get it that perfectly synced than to just sing it.
Also, the timbre in the falsetto shares enough similarity with the chest voice to tell it’s the same voice.

Sanjoboy on January 11, 2008 at 6:37 PM
That was the gayest thing I’ve seen today…but it’s still not the gayest youtube vid that I’ve ever seen. This beats it by far. (I think I originally saw this posted on Ace’s blog one time.)

keepinitreal on January 11, 2008 at 6:39 PM
Not dubbed. He appears to struggle to regulate his breathing in the high parts, and really, if he were going to dub, he’d get a better female voice.
He’s probably been practicing the self-duet since he was 8 years old. I’m so glad for youtube for bringing these people to our attention….

Channeling Simon: Cruise ship performance…NEXT!
Good range, though.

I think it was sweet.
tlynch001 on January 11, 2008 at 6:41 PM
Ha. I tend to agree on the dub suggestion, but note 2:16… sounded like he was going to do Jasmine’s voice, but went back to the male voice because he was ahead of himself. I’ll wait til he shows up on the Tonight Show for the final verdict.
Vizzini on January 11, 2008 at 6:41 PM
The fact that there is no noise when he adjusts the pop filter makes me skeptical right out of the gate.At the very least this vid is not the actual recording session for the audio.I spend alot of time in the booth and engineering/producing also, so that is a pro opinion IMHO.
bbz123 on January 11, 2008 at 6:41 PM
Did someone say Tay Zonday?
He’s found his spiritual side.
Slublog on January 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM
That guy’s gonna get laid so much. With either sex. The carnal world is his oyster.
Christoph on January 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM
I see gayer than that at some of the nelly bars here in Raleigh. Please…that’s nothing!
SouthernGent on January 11, 2008 at 6:42 PM
In that sense, he’s the anti-Tay.

I know the average reaction, but this is incredible voice control. Guy’s got a hell of a talent, and potentially could make quite a career for himself in voice acting.

Great, the main song to my least favorite of my kids movies, Aladdin. Dubbed no doubt, but why?
4shoes on January 11, 2008 at 6:50 PM
This one’s also particularly amazing.
MadisonConservative on January 11, 2008 at 6:50 PM
Not dubbed.
Think “Barry Gibb”.
Montana on January 11, 2008 at 6:50 PM
I would think that they are simple music programs on computers that let you adjust the pitch and other characteristics of a person’s voice. Or concisely: no dub, manipulation.
This is just a guess. I know nothing of music production, beyond that there exists Linux distros for just that purpose and I suppose all that software must be doing something.
thuja on January 11, 2008 at 6:52 PM
Ok Allah, I just took one for the team. Now what? Is there some kinda ‘pain for payback’ system or S&H Greenstamp thing we can cash in for valuable prizes when we suffer enough?

I think he really did it. Pretty amazing.
He lost the competition for the Broadway spot, apparently. Im sure he’ll find some success in that field in the future, though.

I think it’s really his voice. Amazing.
I thought all of the castrati were gone.
Slublog on January 11, 2008 at 7:00 PM
LOL, if it’s real it’s quite freaky, but also amazingly talented.
Maybe this guy can still hit the really high notes after his voice changed. Lord knows I can’t them anymore. Fortunetely, I sing perfectly well with my deeper voice now. Had some kind of craptastic moments inbetween though.
BKennedy on January 11, 2008 at 7:03 PM
Gayer than a $3 bill.

baldilocks on January 11, 2008 at 7:03 PM
I believe it. Well, let’s put it this way, it’s easily possible, though the video/audio don’t match perfectly so I can see where you might say “dubbed”, but it could just be that the video/audio weren’t dubbed together correctly. I believe it.
Anyway, has no one ever heard the song “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus? Cool song, and the best is in the third verse when the singer does the part of the chick’s voice at about 2:49.

RightWinged on January 11, 2008 at 7:05 PM
Nah. Not dubbed. Really AP, you need to get out more and see some theatre. This guy has talent. And for those of you who have your gaydar pinning into the red, really, get over it.
That said, I’d like to recommend y’all watch the episode of Inside the Actor’s Studio where the cast of The Simpson’s appeared. After watching that, you’ll have a whole new appreciation for the talented voices behind the characters.

How about “A Whole New Economic Model for Disney.”

And no, it’s not dubbed.

LEAVE… NICK… ALONE!*sob/sniffle*
I used to teach chorus for a living. My take is that he’s really singing the low parts and he has a very nice voice. I don’t buy the high notes though. I think it’s dubbed.
It’s possible but I’d need to see chapter and verse to be convinced.

I beg to differ.

Actually, the guy’s got some talent. Just because he sings falsetto doesn’t mean he’s gay. Ever hear of Frankie Valli, Lou Christie and Barry Gibb?

Anyone who thinks this is “dubbed” has never been to Karaoke night at a Manhattan gay bar…
JetBoy on January 11, 2008 at 7:52 PM
WTF… He never turns his head away from the mic to breathe!?! I think Tay would unleash some Chocolate Pain on that man-boy-woman for such sloppy work.
Quite painful to watch.

I feel like Bart Simpson being lured into church by an angelic singing voice he thinks is his love, the reverend’s daughter…only to find that it’s Ned Flanders.
Good Lt on January 11, 2008 at 8:03 PM
I’ll work under the assumption that this is legit. Which makes this especially fascinating.
Vizzini on January 11, 2008 at 8:04 PM
What?Hahahaha Frankie Valli
and The Four Seasons were at the top of the charts for many years in the north east market. Along with Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) and many others. The point is falsetto has been around for along time so why the big brew ha ha. Anyway the guy in the vid is probably a loner so he sings both parts in a song written for a guy and girl. That could be considered gay.
sonnyspats1 on January 11, 2008 at 8:05 PM

Mazztek on January 11, 2008 at 8:11 PM
Or it could be his diabolical method for picking up chicks by saying he can relate to their feminine side…
Diabolical I say!
BKennedy on January 11, 2008 at 8:11 PM
There is noise when he adjusts his headphones and there actually is a slight noise when he moves the filter. The fact that he grabs the edge and didn’t touch the filter itself plays a role.
I’ve also recorded and I have moved the filter in the middle of a song without making noise.
I’m sticking with the not-dubbed analysis.
Pat Meebles on January 11, 2008 at 8:11 PM
Yup, probably dubbed. But nice music, nonetheless.
If you like this you’ll probably like Seussical.

Wingo on January 11, 2008 at 9:00 PM
Silly you, AP. Can’t you see his breasts bulging when he sings the female part?
petefrt on January 11, 2008 at 9:05 PM
Not dubbed. He’s a countertenor, which basically means that he has trained himself to be able to sing those notes. Italian operas used to use castrato singers (as somebody mentioned), who were men who had been castrated. After that tradition died out, men trained themselves as countertenors to sing the same very high falsetto parts. In my music class we watched a guy do it, and I assure you it was much more disturbing than this guy (add stage makeup and costumes).
Other commenters mentioned some falsetto singers. A current one is Justin Hawkins from The Darkness. “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” and such.

sulla on January 11, 2008 at 9:21 PM
Singing in his “normal” voice sounds like he’s pinching his nose. Singing in his falsetto just sounds like most guys when they’ve had their knick-knacks crushed. Really, if he was gonna dub it, he would choose better voices than that.
wahhaw on January 11, 2008 at 9:35 PM
Not dubbed. And frickin’ impressive.
