Outrageously outrageous outrage: Huck says Fred needs Metamucil

Lots of tips coming in about this. We complain that our candidates are too stiff and risk-averse and then they make a jokey crack like this and we complain that they’ve crossed a line. Lighten up, gang.
I do wonder, though: Does this count as negative campaigning? He did mention Fred’s name, after all.
The clip has been edited for brevity, specifically to remove some of the same points made in his Fox & Friends appearance this morning. Interesting that this aired about 15 minutes before that one and yet there was no Metamucil line in the latter. Did one of his aides tell him he’d gone too far?

Fred’s official response from Fred08.com
So Fred Thompson criticizes Huckabee’s political positions, and Huckabee’s response is…a juvenile personal insult? You stay classy, Huckabee.
wccawa on January 11, 2008 at 6:32 PM
Huck is very good at quips. Maybe Letterman can hire him to write jokes and we can get on with the election.
Buy Danish on January 11, 2008 at 6:32 PM
The oxygen must be thin where you are. Can you refer me to where Huck counters any of Fred’s points against him?
Or were you confusing name-calling with having a point?

Fred on McCain, they sat beside each other on the Senate floor. They contrast though. Regarding trial lawyers cost to economy and 01, 02 tax cuts, McCain opposed Bush.
Fred crosses McCain on immigration and on taxes, record and platform. McCain is wrong on immigration and taxes, and with McCain ALL IS ON RECORD for everyone to recall. Huckabee, however, being new on the national scene, is making false claims about having a good record. Huckabee refuses to acknowledge Huck’s own real record and the full liberal implications of his campaign promises that hamper the GOP. Huck can not respond to honest criticism except with deceit.
Fred, standing on conservative principle, gives his appreciation to Ronald Reagan’s favorite paper for their endorsement of his great campaign for the American people.
maverick muse on January 11, 2008 at 6:35 PM
I find Huck to be a nasty little whiner, and not in the least bit funny. But then, he’s usually sniping at someone I like. At this point, I will happily vote for McCain to keep this douchebag out of the election.
But I sure hope that isn’t my only choice.

He’s hurting himself by NOT going after McCain right now. If McCain wins in Michigan he will pick up steam nationally and do better in all the states thereafter, including SC…unless, that is, he doesn’t want McCain to lose.

McCain – conservative democrat? No way! He keeps co-sponsoring Amnesty and Global Warming bills with Obama. Just because he has a position on Iraq that the Dems would’ve had if they were in the White House doesn’t make him “conservative”.
Igor R. on January 11, 2008 at 6:41 PM
That might make a good campaign ad … show Fred’s attack on Huck’s record during the debate, show Huck responding with that remark, and end it with “and Huckabee’s response is…a juvenile personal insult? You stay classy, Huckabee”.
Makes Huck look small (which, btw, he is).

Bob Bork is against Huckabee and against McCain because they are NOT conservative but are liberals.
Bob Bork supports true conservatives including Fred Thompson; and George Allen specifically supports Fred Thompson.

As long as the insults are kept are this relatively low level and occupy much of the time in a political debate. I have no problem with it. On the other hand, after making a flippant remark you should follow it with something more substantial. Since the clip was edited, I don’t know whether to fault Huckabee here or not.
I don’t think I agree with Huckabee about anything since I conservative on foreign policy, immigration, and economics, but socially liberal and will vote Dem before voting for him. Still, I find him likable and partly because he exudes some basic decency.

I’m afraid that Thompson is wrong about that. Huckabee’s 24-hour belayed “quip” comprises potty humor, so technically, it would be classified as infantile, rather than merely juvenile.
But once again Thompson chooses to take the high road. Oh well, I suppose someone has to in this God-forsaken field.

NTWR on January 11, 2008 at 7:20 PM
The GOP party faithful are beginning to understand each candidate and accept Fred’s legitimate candidacy platform.
Unless the party rallies around the GOP platform, the Mitt/Huck debacle will bring about the destruction of the GOP and of themselves in a national spectacle.
Neither Mitt/Huck, of their own SELF sacrifice for the cause of the GOP party platform, will relinquish their campaigns for the cause of the conservative movement’s success. However, both do require the sacrifice of others for their own promotion and the consequential success of the Democrat party. Huckabee, though, is despicably small minded.
Of Mitt/Huck, the bigger man, Mitt, may yet throw his support to the GOP conservative movement by endorsing Fred Thompson and thus ensure our party’s conservative national victory. But that miracle would require honest humility. In turn, Mitt’s personal sacrifice and loyalty to the GOP conservative party platform would catapult for life his own fame and career.

I noticed each time as soon as Fred Thompsons name was mentioned his countenance changed from boyish grin to someon who hates turnips and was just told he can’t get up from the table until he eats all his turn-ups. Makes me think that mike is really a tootsie roll pop (hared on the outside but squishy in the middle (to easily offended by a mere name mention)…By the way it only takes one lick for Fred Thompson to “get” to the inside center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop!

Perhaps the most banal argument is to call Republicans “liberal” when they clearly are not. It lessens the real impact of what being liberal means when it becomes a playground insult in the hands of some of you in this forum. You should stick to attacking liberals on the left and leave serious discussions to others.

No offense to the authors, but I just realized that my eyes glazed over as I was reading this.
Frankly, I couldn’t possibly care less whether Romney attacked McCain harshly enough in the last debate. Nor would it ever occur to me that was a mark of unfitness for the office of Presidency – much less a sign of some sort of insidious “stalking horse” collaboration.
But I have “FredHates” telling me that, if the shoe were on the other foot, I’d believe all of that – plus I’d burst out laughing right along with them like a mildly retarded kindergartner over a potty joke response to a serious of specific policy criticisms… if only the “humor” had issued from the sainted lips of the mighty Fred Thompson.
Well, I suppose anything’s possible, but…
No.
I’m sorry. But just, no.
It’s childishly simple to imagine the parties reversed – and that changes absolutely nothing. I agree wholeheartedly with AllahP’s contention that someone here is suffering from derangement syndrome. But the facts simply do not point in the same direction that his finger does.

As usual your antipathy towards Huckabee has poisoned his analysis, you’ve taken his statement out of context.
I have laid out the bread and butter things Huck wants to do to better the country:
-Abolish the IRS and institute the Fair Tax.
-Failing that, he wants to cut taxes and cut spending.
-He has taken the no new tax pledge.
-He wants to stay in Iraq until the job is done and we are successful.
-He wants to stay on offense on the war on terror.
-He is committed to denting Iran nuclear weapons.
-He wants to protect the sanctity of unborn life.
-He wants to protect traditional marriage.
-He has introduced a plan to secure the border without amnesty.
-He wants to change th health care system to a more preventive focused one and opposes government controlled universal health care.
Which of those are so bad? Which do you want to debate?
A two-sided statement is more respected by the general public fella’s than just spewing what you have read on anti-ANYTHING. If you want to be a journalist, RESEARCH!!! I’m sooooooo tired of lazy journalism.
