Outrageously outrageous outrage: Huck says Fred needs Metamucil

posted at 5:45 pm on January 11, 2008 by Allahpundit

Lots of tips coming in about this. We complain that our candidates are too stiff and risk-averse and then they make a jokey crack like this and we complain that they’ve crossed a line. Lighten up, gang.

I do wonder, though: Does this count as negative campaigning? He did mention Fred’s name, after all.

The clip has been edited for brevity, specifically to remove some of the same points made in his Fox & Friends appearance this morning. Interesting that this aired about 15 minutes before that one and yet there was no Metamucil line in the latter. Did one of his aides tell him he’d gone too far?

As I said before, David Shuster shows that he is Robin The Boy Wonder to Olbermann’s Bathman, in the sense that he’s even more dense as a log than his boss.

Consider the network here, folks.

andysdick on January 11, 2008 at 5:49 PM

Bah, different clip than the one posted earlier. Never mind, we’re saved the explanation of what Metamucil is for by the next mindless drone at MSNBC.

MadisonConservative on January 11, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Huckabee is one funny Democrat.

Sugar Land on January 11, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Ok, there are 330 million people in the us (350 million if you count the illegals) Someone please tell me why Huckabee has gotten as far as we can. Im getting really upset that we cant find someone better to nominate and lead this country. I hope Fred takes it

SoCalInfidel on January 11, 2008 at 5:52 PM

The thing about Huck is that since he’s gotten a head of steam, he’s turned into a snarky lil’ pissher.

Crack on Fred, or Mccain, or whomever all you’d like, all’s fair after all; but, he’s acting like a smug liberal and that just doesn’t sit well with me.

yo on January 11, 2008 at 5:52 PM

So… Fred was off the mark. I suppose I missed the part where the Huckster pointed out where Fred got it wrong. He responds like Billary. Attack the person pointing out where you are wrong instead of giving a straight answer.

Les in NC on January 11, 2008 at 5:52 PM

oops, I mean someone tell me why huckabee has even made it this far….it baffles me

SoCalInfidel on January 11, 2008 at 5:53 PM

I’m outraged!

aero on January 11, 2008 at 5:54 PM

I have a problem with this just because the Metamucil line seems kinda weak… If he’d said something about “Depends bunching up” or cracked that Fred! was just angry because they towed his horse drawn carriage in the parking lot, at least he’d have put a little effort in. But Metamucil? Come on! Besides, that’s more of a joke to use on a woman anyway.

RightWinged on January 11, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Huckabee is one funny Democrat.
Sugar Land on January 11, 2008 at 5:50 PM

But still funny, and energetic. Kind of necessary.

Your Jewish Master on January 11, 2008 at 5:54 PM

I hope SC watched that debate last night and ends this sham of a candidate. Why did he file as a Republican anyway? He is clearly a Democrat.

Fred!

SimplyKimberly on January 11, 2008 at 5:54 PM

Fred needs Metamucil is funny. Hope it riles Fred up some. Fred seems to campaign better when he is riled.

bnelson44 on January 11, 2008 at 5:54 PM

yeah, I’m outraged too, Mike, that you’re a serious contender in our race to find a nominee.

From a Town Hall article(comment section): Fred Thompson is the reason Chuck Norris needs to use the Total Gym.

Need I say more?

I donated in a primary for the first time in my life yesterday, and now by the looks of last night’s debate, I’ll be donating TWICE in a primary for the first time in my life!!!

Go FRED!

Fred’s folks respond:

So Fred Thompson criticizes Huckabee’s political positions, and Huckabee’s response is…a juvenile personal insult? You stay classy, Huckabee.

yo on January 11, 2008 at 6:10 PM

Huck is on weak ground talking about shooting better. Until then, he was fine, but a bit of an asshole. At that point, I thought he was an asshole and a jackass. Thanks for reminding me.

Christoph on January 11, 2008 at 6:11 PM

I do wonder, though: Does this count as negative campaigning? He did mention Fred’s name, after all.

Well, see, Huck was going to say Fred needs Matamucil, but decided he wants to take the high road and not campaign negatively. But just so you know he would’ve really said it, he did. Just to prove he would’ve, of course. Had he done it. Which he did.

Califemme on January 11, 2008 at 6:12 PM

I don’t know how much Fred has to back up what he said about Mike in the debate, but at least it was about policy and issues. Mike said one moderatly substantial thing when he accuses Fred of not having a record to talk about, once again I am not sure how true that is. All the rest is just insults. I am not going to elect someone based on the fact that they can win a cutdown battle.

Tim Pancoast on January 11, 2008 at 6:14 PM

I don’t mind the Metamucil stupidity, I mind that Huck didn’t do JACK to refute it and MSNBC (of course) let it slide.

That is isn’t surprised that the Governor’s response is that kind of High School humor. Really something to be proud about a presidential candidate. Why wasn’t he asked about the issues? Why is it all about process? All 15 people who watched the show should be so proud….

Huck had some funny lines. But he did nothing to defend his own record. Joe Scarborough let him slide and helped him attack Fred’s record instead.
The media honeymoon will end if and when Huck faces a Democrat, and he will look like a deer in the headlights when faced with the charges they will bring up.

joewm315 on January 11, 2008 at 6:22 PM

God love ya Fred!, but you’ve got to take McLame out

To comment on one of Fre’s points. Huck wants a national ban on smoking Fred said. I didn’t hear a denial on that point. If implemented, where will we get the money for the CHILDREN’S SCHIP?

Les in NC on January 11, 2008 at 6:25 PM

I took some metamucil, worked great, an hour later I dropped a Huckabee in the commode and felt great.

JayHaw Phrenzie on January 11, 2008 at 6:26 PM

I don’t know about orgasmic, but it definitely made me want to stand up and cheer. You know us conservatives are always complaining about none of these candidates have conservative values across the board on all the issues. But I think Fred does, we’ve just let a few votes here and there when he was in the senate sway our judgement. All politicians have a vote here and there that are questionable but they usually have circumstances.

Thompson is strong military, anti-big government spending, anti-amnesty for illegals in any way, and pro conservative judges with a lifelong record to back it up. That’s what we’re looking for – so let’s start backing it up folks! Plus he’s got a great personality to boot so where’s the downside? It’s not too late as some fools keep saying.

Huckabee’s Limits [Ramesh Ponnuru]

Anyway, two points about Huckabee (and forgive me if I’m repeating things that others have said here already). First: Those of us who have argued that Huckabee’s campaign, as it stands, will have very limited appeal for non-evangelicals got a little confirmation from the New Hampshire exit polls. Twenty-three percent of people who voted in the Republican primary there said they were evangelical or born-again Christians. Among the 77 percent who weren’t, Huckabee got only 6 percent. Among those voters, Huckabee placed fifth, behind even Ron Paul.

Don’t you know Allah, attacking Fred is eevil! Jump on the clear conservative choice bandwagon!

Cause hey, you know I hate Huck, but he’s got a point: Fred was useless in the Senate. He backed McCain to the hilt. Now we’re supposed to believe this do-nothing lip flapper is the conservative savior? Yeah right.

Fred Thompson: “I’ll kick terrorist rear and I’ll wipe out the commies, just don’t ask me to take on McCain!”

BKennedy on January 11, 2008 at 6:28 PM

From a comment on the Freddo site….

wccawa on January 11, 2008 at 6:29 PM

Fred channels Reagan:

TexasDan on January 11, 2008 at 6:29 PM

I do wonder, though: Does this count as negative campaigning? He did mention Fred’s name, after all.

Not at all. Huck is defending himself which he has every right to do. There is a big difference between that and going after a (fellow conservative) using a negative ad campaign like the flip flopping, lying liberal, Romney did – and what Fred (yawn, I feel sleepy all of a sudden) is trying to do now. Give at er Huck!
