What kind of wuss goes to a mall clinic let alone an ER for a sore throat or a case of poison ivy?

In your world no one, however the fact remains that many people do and that is their choice and free enterprise sees the clinics a need. If no one goes they close, it they make money they remain open and deliver a need to society. I see no problem with that. There are many businesses I would not use but I certainly would not judge people who do, as a wuss.

Hey!

I believe HA has attracted all 5 conservatives in Massachusetts to post here.

I resemble that remark! Make it six, OK? (Seriously,
though, it is a bear to get a login here if ya' keep
daylight hours.)

We actually have a relatively sane state rep out here in
the western end of the state - though our federal rep is
a howling moonbat.

The only bonafides I can offer is that I have voted
against The Swimmer as soon as I was old enough to
vote - that'd have been the same year he did the DWI thing
with Ms. Kopechne.

Common sense in health care is important too although it is contraindicated if your a Doctor with two boats to make payments on.

Some mention as to LPN's can write a prescription. They can write a prescription but can not sign it. It must be a MD, DO, Veterinarian, dentist, and podiatrist have full prescription power. Same for a RN or BSN, they can not sign the prescription in their name.

A Nurse Practitioner (NP)(or advanced practice nurses) or Physician Assistant (PA) are mid level practitioners who can sign a prescription but need a MD, DO, etc as stated above for oversight, per se.

ERs are not for minor emergencies or a substitute for a physician clinic. Some hospitals have even started minor treatment centers for these minor emergencies. Clinics in pharmacies if supervised properly and legal for that state, is a great service for the community and especially if the practitioner knows when to refer the patient to a higher level of care.

We've got these minute clinics up in Minnesota. They are in some Target stores. I've used them and think they are great. Fast, cheap, take insurance, and you can make an appointment and they'll give you a beeper so you can shop until they are ready to see you.
I think they are great.

It ought to be an entire field of study. Why do so many people cling so fiercely to such obviously failed systems and philosophies?

I mean, Garbage Dump Russia, Catlle-People China, and the less said about Cuba and North Korea the better...

This goes beyond a learning disorder. What do you call it when someone always learns the opposite of the obvious lesson every single time?

Maybe every profit-making business in Mass needs to move out to provide an example - but no doubt, the likes of Menino would in fact learn the opposite of that lesson as well.

Entelechy et al above are right:

Microclinics are here to stay, and they're unstoppable.

As usual, the private sector will lead the way out of the health care mess. $4 Prescription drugs from Walmart, deep discounts from others as they compete for our business. And for treatment, armies of "nurse practitioners" and "microclinics" taking up the load from expensive emergency rooms and impossible-to-schedule doctors offices.

Government still hasn't figured out that what is needed is new means to provide efficient delivery of healthcare...NOT health insurance!! And as long as government is so deeply confused and off-track about the basics of this issue, nothing good or helpful will come from government.

I'm glad to have escaped from Taxachussets!!!

I chuckle when I hear about what the supposedly better-than-you liberals from Massachussets are doing...and trying to push onto the rest of us.

I will always remember Massachussets (greater Boston Area) as a place where the phones didn't work, the water barely worked, and the sewers didn't exist. Real estate taxes were about 15% of the actual price of the property. Of course any kind of business is the enemy. Civilized?

With the disclaimer that I'm no one's financial advisor, investing a bit in microclinics, of all kinds, is a smart move.

The mayor is dead wrong on this topic. It is insane to have our hospitals' urgent care units overrun by people with sniffles, minor cuts/bruises, etc. at exorbitant costs to us all. Some very big name executives have left major enterprises to start/run microclinics of all kinds, in all sorts of places, around the world.

This is a huge wave, it is here, and it is unstoppable - be a part of it, from any which standpoint. It's a "good thing", and I'm not Martha Stewart. But I work in hospitals and have researched this topic extensively.

I’d go for a WGPWHI? (what govt program would Huck Impose?)

something involving earth tones, that would make me feel ok about myself, no doubt.

and be taken out of my paycheck, so I wouldn't notice it so much, I bet.

Does this have anything to do with the MA Governments new policy that you MUST have health insurance or else?

Maybe we need a open thread for all the MA folks here, figure out where what district we could all live in,and then finaly vote in a R St Rep and Senator.

We had a couple of chances with Weld and Romney, but now the MA GOP party is in shambles. I have never seen it so one-sided, I don't think it has ever been so one-sided. I don't see a recovery until the Dems completely bankrupt the state. Luckily that hasn't happened yet, simply because the Governor has done absolutely nothing so far.

The only way I make it through is by making sure I pay as little income tax as possible, buy a lot of goods online or wait until tax-free day, drive my neighbors nuts with Republican yard signs, and raise hell everytime some yahoo wants to override Prop 2 1/2 to fund the beast that is the MA teacher's union.

When I was a kid, I remember seeing one of those Warner Bros. cartoons that they used to play in movie theaters in the 1940's before TV was big. In this particular one, an eastern European mouse was visiting his American cousins. They lived in a department store and part, if not all, of the cartoon was spent explaining capitalism. The American mice explained to their cousin that the profit incentive made businesses seek to reduce costs and that competition made them want to reduce prices and increase quality. Looks like this Menino fool never caught that cartoon. Cutting costs. Reducing prices. Increasing quality. Nahhh, we can't have that in our healthcare system.

What does Huck think about this?

dean_acheson on January 11, 2008 at 1:49 PM
He would ask himself what Jesus would do, then implement a government program for it.

Minute clinics are great. I have used one twice...once for a flu shot and once for pinkeye. Took me less than 10 minutes each time, I didnt have to be on hold with my clinic for an appointment for 30 minutes then shlep downtown to wait and hour in the waiting room. People go in there to pee in a cup, or get a throat swap, or get a tetanus shot if they step on a nail. These things do not require the backup of a big hospital. They are usually staffed by Nurse Practicioners or Phyicians Assistants, who can diagnose and treat/write prescriptions.
