9 p.m. ET on Fox News from Myrtle Beach, SC. The anticipation over Ron Paul’s impending immolation has deflated a bit thanks to his CNN appearance, but only a bit: Kudos to Wolf Blitzer for tossing him softballs so that Wallace can put the screws to him in primetime. Tonight’s the last spin of the wheel for Fred and Romney, needless to say. With McCain and Huck in front of him, Fred’s going RINO-hunting; expect him to hammer the “true conservative” meme to the point of desperation. Mitt’s task is tough given the fact that Michigan is the must-win for him now, not SC. That means less Carolina social-con red meat about values and the war and more Detroit red meat about economic recovery. Something to chew on while you watch — even if one of them dropped out and could somehow cede all his votes to the other, that would still only put the survivor one point ahead of Captain Amnesty. How did we get to this point?
Also needless to say, count on lots of surge anniversary talk from McCain and some “culture of life” red meat from Huck. While you wait, enjoy the latest on Bloomberg’s already insufferable flirtation with his messianic nonpartisan presidential run. He’s Mitt Romney minus the looks, charisma (really), and conservative values, plus a few extra plutocratic billion in the bank. Where do I sign up?
Two videos for you, too. The first is McCain’s primary strategy — from last month. His guys may not have money but they know what they’re doing. The second is … unfortunate.

Mandates will end up having the net effect of raising, rather than lowering costs. Kind of like “pave it and they will come.” Like the fair tax keeps open the possibility that it will be abused by adding another income tax on top of it. Every time there is a new mandate, it ends up being abused by the very forces we are trying to control and we get screwed with higher costs.
Connie on January 10, 2008 at 10:54 PM
On the other hand let’s keep ‘em tied up diddling their cells to stack phonetext polls, and buzzing around in blimps, and blitzing signs, etc. They’ll miss the real action that way.
The Ritz on January 10, 2008 at 10:54 PM
So?
What’s your point?
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

MB4 on January 10, 2008 at 10:54 PM
Oh. Well they did the last one. I’ll be disappointed if they don’t this time.
Spirit of 1776 on January 10, 2008 at 10:54 PM
There is a stupid Paul-bot that works with me. He’s an older, fairly intelligent gentleman, but he has RP placards, bumper stickers, etc., all over his truck. He tries to pass out Paul literature at work and is very annoying.
I found this comic and sent it to him this week. Heh.
MsUnderestimated on January 10, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Yes, I know he was faking it. ;)
tickleddragon on January 10, 2008 at 10:55 PM
If everybody who could afford it had health insurance, it would cost the gov’t/our pockets less and healthcare costs overall would be lower.
malan89 on January 10, 2008 at 10:55 PM
He’s been drafting like a NASCAR driver. The only media attention that really matters is that which you get right before the big votes. Everyone else wasted all kinds of time, money, and energy. Fred did it smart.
unamused on January 10, 2008 at 10:56 PM

Fred doesn’t take a dump without a plan, son. He’s competing with Huckster for the conservative vote- what should rightly be his territory instead of the non-conservative Huckster.
McCain appeals more to independants and moderates; let him battle Romney and Rudy for votes.
Hollowpoint on January 10, 2008 at 10:56 PM
Whoa………….1800+ comments Allahpundit must be slamming the New castles and giggling like a school girl….
doriangrey on January 10, 2008 at 10:56 PM
SOOOO happy the Luntz focus group is paying attention. Loved it that they picked the right candidate.
MsUnderestimated on January 10, 2008 at 10:56 PM
i only vote once unlike paulbots and democrates
Mojack420 on January 10, 2008 at 10:56 PM
What do you think he did wrong?
He touted his new tax plan (which Fred applauded!)
He talked sense on national security.
He gave a strong defense of his illegal immigration record.
He made a case for his ability to put purple states into play.
I think he avoided the worst of the Mickey Mouse tit-for-tat sniping.
LagunaDave on January 10, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Enforcement by attrition works, BK. AZ illegals have started to self-deport. Securing the border, ending sanctuary cities, and stopping employers from hiring illegals is all we can realistically do, and it is a lot when you think about it.
Kicking in doors and dragging away moms and dads is asking for a race war. Border security and enforcement… that’s all we ask, Washington!!!
joewm315 on January 10, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Here he comes!!!
The Ritz on January 10, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Seconded. Mitt would have done much better if he was given more time. Too much spent on Paul.
malan89 on January 10, 2008 at 10:57 PM
Fred up next, y’all!
SouthernGent on January 10, 2008 at 10:58 PM

MsUnderestimated on January 10, 2008 at 10:58 PM
Everyone ready for a Ron Paul victory in the text message polling?
henzou on January 10, 2008 at 10:58 PM
Ummm….it’s (ahem) ya’ll.
malan89 on January 10, 2008 at 10:59 PM
What? Y’all are gonna get an ASS whooping now.
I’ll have you know that Tickle lives at darn near the EXACT latitude I was born at (albeit, several thousand miles WEST.)
But, tonight, ICH BIN EIN SOUTH CAROLINER!
wccawa on January 10, 2008 at 10:59 PM
There is a crucial difference between being the minority and being a very slim minority.
Out of every 1000 grown-up people, you’re always able to find at least one who *still* believes in Santa Claus. How does that jive with the “the majority is stoopid” quote from Mr. Twain?
unamused on January 10, 2008 at 10:59 PM
California, Washington, Wisconsin…all WAY too far away. (*tears*)

TheSitRep on January 10, 2008 at 10:59 PM
I am still a Rudy supporter, but Fred is growing on me.
SouthernGent on January 10, 2008 at 10:59 PM
Yeah, why not. Who really gives a crap.
The Ritz on January 10, 2008 at 10:59 PM
Heh heh heh thats always a given…
doriangrey on January 10, 2008 at 10:59 PM
And the next time Romney talks about “investing” in tech, the auto industry, energy, etc. it’s going to be tough not to scream at the TV.
You don’t spend your way out of a recession, stupid. We need less subsidy and special interest group spending- not more.
Hollowpoint on January 10, 2008 at 10:59 PM
We agree on one thing, way to much of the kook Paul.
Big Orange on January 10, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Dang. That will cost him.
TheSitRep on January 10, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Actually, no you’re wrong. It is YOU ALL, “y’all”.
tickleddragon on January 10, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Can any one pull up Fred’s site?
TheSitRep on January 10, 2008 at 11:00 PM
I thought Fred did ok, but it won’t matter. He’s finished after Michigan. Too bad he didn’t have debates like this months ago.
froghat on January 10, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Gee, everybody on stage (except Paul) looked good; just like I’d expect President Thompson’s cabinet to behave :))
michaelo on January 10, 2008 at 11:00 PM
People here in Austin are shooting off there guns celebrating Fred’s win.
NOt really, but it would be cool. ( Well, safety wise, but you know)
Fred!
RobertInAustin on January 10, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Wikipeida says y’all, but if you read the two “ya’ll” puts more umpph on the a. Man, you know you’re bored when you’re discussing the spelling of yall.

SouthernGent on January 10, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Hey, I’m in Austin, too – would love to hear the gunfire crackle for Fred!
Missy on January 10, 2008 at 11:01 PM
And the Paulbots are still spamming the Fox News text poll.
Again.
God I hate them.
Hawkins1701 on January 10, 2008 at 11:01 PM
Thompson can secure the nomination right this minute by simply winding up and punching Colmes dead in the nose, live.
unamused on January 10, 2008 at 11:02 PM
Ron Puerile wins! woohoo
The Ritz on January 10, 2008 at 11:02 PM

malan89 on January 10, 2008 at 11:02 PM
Colmes is nitpicking success.
“Take yes for an answer, Alan” :)
silverfox on January 10, 2008 at 11:03 PM
It’s a moral victory. At least they’ll finish first in one poll.
henzou on January 10, 2008 at 11:03 PM
“We’ve had some success there, Alan, you’re gonna have to deal with it.”
FRED!!

malan89 on January 10, 2008 at 11:06 PM
Is this a record post for Hot Air? Unbelievable.
I thought all candidates did well tonight. Huckabee and Thompson came out better IMHO.
In before the Huckabee haters.
