Open thread: The “Fred’s and Mitt’s last chance” debate!

9 p.m. ET on Fox News from Myrtle Beach, SC. The anticipation over Ron Paul’s impending immolation has deflated a bit thanks to his CNN appearance, but only a bit: Kudos to Wolf Blitzer for tossing him softballs so that Wallace can put the screws to him in primetime. Tonight’s the last spin of the wheel for Fred and Romney, needless to say. With McCain and Huck in front of him, Fred’s going RINO-hunting; expect him to hammer the “true conservative” meme to the point of desperation. Mitt’s task is tough given the fact that Michigan is the must-win for him now, not SC. That means less Carolina social-con red meat about values and the war and more Detroit red meat about economic recovery. Something to chew on while you watch — even if one of them dropped out and could somehow cede all his votes to the other, that would still only put the survivor one point ahead of Captain Amnesty. How did we get to this point?

Also needless to say, count on lots of surge anniversary talk from McCain and some “culture of life” red meat from Huck. While you wait, enjoy the latest on Bloomberg’s already insufferable flirtation with his messianic nonpartisan presidential run. He’s Mitt Romney minus the looks, charisma (really), and conservative values, plus a few extra plutocratic billion in the bank. Where do I sign up?

Two videos for you, too. The first is McCain’s primary strategy — from last month. His guys may not have money but they know what they’re doing. The second is … unfortunate.

Something to consider for all those who will stay home if their candidate does not get the nod. (I’m so close to being one - I’m a Fred supporter)

TALK RADIO AND THE INTERNET. The Democrats WILL try to shut down conservative radio and police the internet. That will be the end.

Also - judges! Please think long and hard and PRAY WITHOUT CEASING.

Go Fred!

Those McCain guys are very smart. John is hard-core campaigner, that’s for sure. I disagree with the statement that Huck is on the right of Fred though, unless social cons are consider far right (but that belies John’s own social con cred). I’m really starting to think he is the winner for the R ticket. With the ability for Dems and Indies to vote on the R ticket in Michigan, McCain seems the winner - the ‘none committal’ anti-Hillary vote notwithstanding.

MikeZero on January 10, 2008 at 8:07 PM

McCain is sponsoring MORE legislation with the democrats, this time with Lieberman. In a July 2007 letter to McCain, the EPA estimated the tax will be about $.26 cents per gallon of gasoline by 2030 and $.68 cents per gallon by 2050. For electricity, the EPA estimates that the McCain energy tax would increase individual’s electric bills by 22 percent in 2030 and 25 percent in 2050.

The effect on the economy of the McCain tax would be similar to any other broad-based tax. In the EPA’s own words:

The present value of the cumulative reduction in real GDP for the 2012-2030 period ranges from $660 billion to $2.1 trillion…the cumulative reduction in the present value of real GDP for the 2012-2050 period ranges from about $1.6 trillion to $5.2 trillion.

And he’s still against the Bus tax cuts.

So, let’s review: McCain is for Z-visas/amnesty (McCain Kennedy), against free speech in the most important context - our electoral process (McCain Feingold) and now wants to INCREASE the cost of energy (McCain Lieberman)

And he could be the GOP nominee????

Rommey is on his last legs? What BS. He took in $5,000,000 yesterday. I do not think his campaign is over by a long shot. Anyone interested in other than the musings of those with little knowledge of what is really going on should slip on over to townhall.com. There is some eyeopening information available there. Last legs, huh?

Zelsdorf Ragshaft on January 10, 2008 at 8:17 PM

Rudy cut the Murder rated and Taxes in NY City when people told him he couldn’t do it..

He will also stop Illegal Immigration while people tell him that its impossible.

BKennedy on January 10, 2008 at 8:22 PM

I hope it’s Brit. Wallace gets sidetracked so badly with the day’s top stories. Like tonight he’d give RuPaul about 2/3 of the total time to explain his meaningless newsletters, get to Fred about a half hour in and completely ignore at least one candidate. The man cannot manage the time.

Zelsdorf Ragshaft on January 10, 2008 at 8:17 PM

$5M in one day? That kind of surge sure didn’t help Ron Paul.

Money isn’t everything. He hasn’t been overwhelmingly appealing like I thought he would. I’m a Romney campaign contributor and I don’t think he’s on his last leg but I wouldn’t put too much stock in the $5M. Especially since most of it was for a general election campaign. Probably a lot of repeat donors who’ve already maxed out on the primary contributions.

Romney and Fred should stay in no matter what.

If it’s going to be a brokered convention we don’t want Huck or McCain holding all the bargaining chips. Romney can sweep up a large chunk of the candidates, Redstate’s done the math, and while I don’t think he can take a bunch of silvers to the general, it’s important for the movement that he be part of the process of choosing the nom.

I like MItt and Fred a lot, but my first pick is Rudy. Still think he’s got a chance to sweep on Super Tuesday, but he’s dancing on the razor’s edge.

Yep, if I had an ashtray, I’d already have thrown it. LOL.

See, you lost me on those two.

So if saw someone with dark skin get hit by a car, you would make sure their papers were in order before calling an ambulance and administering first aid?

Is this what you guys mean by “enforcement through attrition”?
