Open thread: The “Fred’s and Mitt’s last chance” debate!

9 p.m. ET on Fox News from Myrtle Beach, SC. The anticipation over Ron Paul’s impending immolation has deflated a bit thanks to his CNN appearance, but only a bit: Kudos to Wolf Blitzer for tossing him softballs so that Wallace can put the screws to him in primetime. Tonight’s the last spin of the wheel for Fred and Romney, needless to say. With McCain and Huck in front of him, Fred’s going RINO-hunting; expect him to hammer the “true conservative” meme to the point of desperation. Mitt’s task is tough given the fact that Michigan is the must-win for him now, not SC. That means less Carolina social-con red meat about values and the war and more Detroit red meat about economic recovery. Something to chew on while you watch — even if one of them dropped out and could somehow cede all his votes to the other, that would still only put the survivor one point ahead of Captain Amnesty. How did we get to this point?

Also needless to say, count on lots of surge anniversary talk from McCain and some “culture of life” red meat from Huck. While you wait, enjoy the latest on Bloomberg’s already insufferable flirtation with his messianic nonpartisan presidential run. He’s Mitt Romney minus the looks, charisma (really), and conservative values, plus a few extra plutocratic billion in the bank. Where do I sign up?

Two videos for you, too. The first is McCain’s primary strategy — from last month. His guys may not have money but they know what they’re doing. The second is … unfortunate.

They would have done a sandcastle of Mrs. Fred Thompson, but they ran out of sand.

Ron Paul wins with 32% !

Ron couldn’t make it to be interviewed…..he was busy. Doing what? Taking bong hits?

32% for Paul in the poll. Barf. Ron Paul spammers are like the kids who run up to arcade games, put no money in, then start bashing the buttons until their mom drags them off.

Damn! Drink much?

TheSitRep on January 10, 2008 at 11:49 PM

Me or mom? Mom doesn’t drink much at all, me not anywhere near as much as I used to…The cast iron skillet thing was way back when I was a teenager. Since I had three brothers who were also teenagers it was kind of a old fashioned Irish way of maintaining discipline. You almost have to be of Irish decent to understand…

doriangrey on January 11, 2008 at 12:00 AM

You would ask an artillery officer what a good beer is? Done you know those guys breath so much cordite that they cant taste anything? He wouldn’t know a good beer if he drowned in it…You need to ask somebody who would really know… ;)

doriangrey on January 10, 2008 at 11:45 PM

Was it high, was it low,
Where the frack did that one go?
As those Caissons go rolling along
Was it left, was it right,
Now we won’t get our beer tonight
And those Caissons go rolling along.

Then it’s hi! hi! hee!
In the field artillery,
Shout out your numbers loud and strong,
For where’er you go,
You will always know
That the Caissons go rolling along.

I started out in the Infantry and became an officer in the artillery. Can’t pick a favorite, but artillery lends dignity to what would otherwise be a disorganized brawl.

I’m really late to the party, all. Right before this post, I went out and got drunk with my woman and a lot of women who looked a lot like her and therefore were hotter than a thermite reaction.

Rudy has been quoted as saying that crime was not dropping while guns were not being seized. I’d link you to that as well, but as you completely ignored my last link, did NOT apologize for calling someone a liar, which you were utterly and completely wrong on, I’m not going to bother pointing out facts to someone who puts no value in them. LagunaDave, you better learn to watch yourself, because I am now going to be watching for anytime you make silly claims or call others liars. I’ll be waiting in the wings to show you’re about as truthful and informed as John Edwards. Realize that your bogus claims are worthless when you’re dealing with people who actually know the candidates, their positions, and their issues. Don’t ever try that crap again. Take it to Kos where it belongs.

Thank you and good night. I need to go pass out now.

I’ll save you much – checked that out already – it’s extremely beautiful, from any which aspect, but they are way more socialist than here. Taxes, taxes, taxes…attitude “the government decides, we take it”. I was negatively impressed, anticipating that they’d be more rugged than Americans. Not so. When owning business, even worse…pay before profit shown, for ex. when opening a restaurant. Transylvania on the other hand…just kidding.

Trust me on this my old friend.
I understand inter-service and intra-service rivalry. I was a Short Party Man in the Marine Corps. This gives you a very unique perspective as to Ops Plans and Orders. or SMEAC.

Each part of the system must work together. If you like Arty then try going to battle without supply and logistics. Those cannon cockers wont have rounds to put on target.

So, has Barnett been in the tank for Huckabee lately?

ninjapirate on January 11, 2008 at 12:50 AM

I’m not sure, but he’s sure as hell in the tank tonight–he sounds like Hewitt gushing over Mitt. Apparently we were watching different debates, because I don’t see how anybody could call it a big night for the Huckster. Now I’m no fan of Huckabee–but then I’m a conservative, and he’s a pro-life liberal–so I’m hardly impartial, but the only times he looked strong to me was when he supported Israel (against the Paulnut) and answered the Biblical marriage question. Which was a softball for him, considering how many times he’s answered it already, plus religion is actually something he knows about.

The whole attempt to talk tough on Iran sounded completely phony to me (although Luntz’s chart spiked on that, which surprised me), just empty bluster to bolster his nonexistent credentials as CINC. Fred, on the other hand, sounded like he meant business–but he’s an actor, so I’m sure that didn’t hurt his delivery. Huckabee just seemed more petty and pissy tonight, even before Fred hammered him, and that snarky line about “no bridges collapsed in my state” was just low. I’m sure the people in MN are really impressed with your compassion there, jackass–nothing’s funnier that the Jesus candidate joking on fatal accidents. Yet another instance of Huckabee giving real Christians a bad name.

theregoestheneighborhood on January 11, 2008 at 2:50 AM

I didn’t listen to the whole mccain clip but it seems it really supports Romney. They are wrong about huckabee being right of Romney, people see the huckster for what he is now, especially after Fred unloaded on him. And they are wrong about Romney’s perceived flip flops. If it comes down to mccain versus Romney, mccain will not be able to attack Romney on these perceived flip flops because three issues mccain has not flip flopped on, attacking free speach with mccain-feingold, amnesty for illegal aliens and his embrace of the same enviromental stance as gore. iowa, new hampshire and michigan do not come close to representing the conservatives in America or the overall republican base or even arguablly, moderate/undecided America. It’s possible/likely that independants actually outvoted actual republicans in both iowa and new hampshire and Romney won among real republicans in both those states.

Sidebar: Not too far from there is where some of “To Hell and Back” was filmed.

Huh, I guess some people really do think being a womanizing hollywood type and a senator who voted for Mccain Feingold is sufficient experience to be President of the United States.

I’ll tell you now I live in Los Angeles and go to some of their parties occasionally and the truth is not ONE person in hollywood/entertainment biz deserves to be anywhere near the white house!
