Debate Highlights: Fred takes Huck to the woodshed; Update: Fred on “virgins”; Update: Stalking horse?

Who wants some piping hot Fred? Here he is taking Mike Huckabee to task for his campaign manager suggesting that the Reagan coalition is dead. Fred then goes on to hammer Huckabee’s liberal tendencies.
Update (AP): Enjoy the attack on Huck, but I hasten to remind you that it’s not Huck who’s ahead right now in SC. If Fred’s unwilling to attack McCain too then he’s not really trying to win, he’s simply trying to take Huck down. Which benefits … McCain.
Update (AP): I’m not accusing Fred of being a stalking horse in intent but in fact. If he won’t attack McCain then he’s forfeiting an opportunity to vault past him.
Update (AP): Some of the commenters are wondering why I think Fred helped McCain tonight by attacking Huckabee after saying a few days ago that he’s probably hurting Mac more than Huck by staying in the race. Answer: The two aren’t mutually exclusive. If he dropped out tomorrow, I think McCain would benefit since the ‘Heads are slightly more likely to break towards the war candidate than the values candidate (I think). By attacking Huck tonight, though, Fred presumably peeled away a few of Huck’s own supporters. It doesn’t really matter where they go since they’ll only amount to a few percent and McCain leads both Mitt and Fred by double digits. It’s a net benefit to him that Huckabee loses supporters, period, even if he loses them to Fred.

Pretty good. Huck’s response was a little obnoxious by starting off with the “here are the facts” thing and then proceeded to not refute Freds criticisms

It’s all in the big debate thread.
BKennedy on January 10, 2008 at 9:51 PM
Dang, beat me to it.
By the way, that was the best political moment so far in this campaign. My wife tried to get to Fred’s site and it was locked up. I hope it’s lots of people wanting to give long green.

You ROCK Fred!!! This Huckabust has got to be shown for who he is… That’s why I caucused for him in Iowa.
Stand by folks, Fred could be the dark horse!
colep on January 10, 2008 at 9:55 PM
Sadly, only Fox news will let him talk like that….the MSM (sic) will want to shut him down if they even put him on the air at all.
Fred is the closest we have to a Reagan Conservative.
He doesn’t need to dance as president, he needs to lead, so everyone questioning his desire and saying he’s lazy are looking for someone to be “In your face”, but just like Reagan, he’s a quiet conservative until he needs to be vocal.
Sad that he’s not getting the coverage he deserves, but he’s not the MSM (sic) candidate of choice.

Nice job, Bryan, getting the video up this quickly.
And Thompson’s Hucka-bash was long overdue. Huckabee didn’t look pleased.
Slublog on January 10, 2008 at 9:57 PM
someone post up ron paul getting laughed out of the debate

lan astaslem on January 10, 2008 at 10:00 PM
‘Bout time someone wasted Huck, and Fred! sure as hell did it… Sadly for Fred! he didn’t decide he wanted the job until a couple of days ago, so I think his campaign is pretty much over, even with a win in SC, I don’t know how far he can really go at this point.
RightWinged on January 10, 2008 at 10:00 PM
Its a long long campaign, the more Huck gets hit the more he will become a non-factor and we will see thereal strength that Romney, Rudy, John and Fred truely have
EricPWJohnson on January 10, 2008 at 10:00 PM
Ron Paul= done
glad they let him in this debate, the more people get a good look at his ignorance the better.
trailortrash on January 10, 2008 at 10:01 PM
Fred needs to keep stomping the RINOs around him. YEEEEEAHHH!!! He’s going after Huck again!
doubleplusundead on January 10, 2008 at 10:01 PM
I disagree, RP has been a huge distraction and sucking up way too much time.

Please!
Please!

Oh, I now saw Bryan’s response above.
Thanks!

This is GREAT having a place to post about Fred where other folks see what I’m seeing. I’m SICK of the MSM’s pushing of Huck. They WANT him to be the nominee… because he can’t get the win.
colep on January 10, 2008 at 10:05 PM
Arghh I missed the debate cuz I got in a car wreck. Stupid Utah snow.
Let me know if there’s a link out there for the whole thing.
CABE on January 10, 2008 at 10:07 PM
It’s not too late for Fred to assert himself. His platform and background present him as the conservative candidate that we all want. It’s very difficult not to be painfully disappointed with the non-campaign that he has run, but I am convinced that it is not yet too late.
Come on, Fred. Let’s get this thing going.

Take a look over at The Corner, they are going apesh!t over Fred’s performance. From K-Lo, to Jonah, to Mark Levin, to Kate O’Beirne to Rich Lowry. I’ve never seen such uniform enthusiasm over there about one of these debate performances.

I raised hope? The only thing he is raising is the puke into my mouth.
liberrocky on January 10, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Obligatory question: Why wasn’t Fred this lively in debates up until this point? The last one we had a great clip of him in was refusing to raise his hand.
amerpundit on January 10, 2008 at 10:10 PM
I’m a hardcore Mitt fan, but I admit that Fred is having a good night. We need to do whatever it takes to stop Huckabee and McCain from getting this nomination. I will not let conservatism be slandered by the liberal tag team.
davenp35 on January 10, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Don’t be so sure, McCain might take himself out with his betrayals of the conservative movement. Oh, this’ll be good Fred is about to hit Huck.

Huck wants kids playing in traffic.

God I wish Fred could be involved heavily in whoever wins the republican primaries

Put this in the wrong thread: True. But it is Fred doing something. It’s a sign of life from him punking Rino’s. I’ll take it either way, esp so with Huck.

Huck playing the “unashamed Christian” is just the kind of wool he wants to pull of South Carolinians’ eyes.

And what did they say before it?

Fred’s doing great. But I agree not enough McCain takedowns, but why does McCain have to end his answers with that “I’m a good boy” grin?
Roh, roh, he just got the immigration question. Get’ em Fred!
andysdick on January 10, 2008 at 10:25 PM

Heh. And it was Nemo who predicted it, here on Hot Air. Your humble Captain does admit that none of the other candidates smacked down Uncle Ron. He took out his gun and shot himself in the foot.
Way to go, Ron! See ya…wouldn’t wanna be ya.
NemoParticularis on January 10, 2008 at 10:29 PM
Fred is definitely trying to help McCain. After McCain was attacked as “part of the problem”, as part of Congress, Thompson declined to echo the attack McCain, talked about his own past work in Congress, and concluded by saying “so it is possible to be in Congress and get some good, positive changes made.”
That’s when I realized he is working on McCain’s behalf… which is unfortunate.
DaveS on January 10, 2008 at 10:29 PM
Fred! kinda muffed his chance on immigration.
davidk on January 10, 2008 at 10:29 PM
Wow. Huckabee’s “no bridges fell in Arkansas” line was really offensive.
Slublog on January 10, 2008 at 10:31 PM
Dude. If he does that, I’ll break out the champagne.

It is the end of the beginning.
Buckle up, buckaroo. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride – but well worth it.

macblanegirl on January 10, 2008 at 10:33 PM
I’m not accusing him of being a stalking horse in intent but in fact. If he wants to win, he has to beat McCain too. What has he said tonight to do that?

He didn’t attack McCain. In fact, he stopped himself once in mid McCain attack and moved his attack to Huck. He is doing it deliberately.
